Tl*the contact owns a 1993 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the steering suddenly failed in her vehicle while driving away from her residence. the bolt that connects the entire gear box exploded. the vehicle was inspected by a mechanic and the contact was informed that an entirely new gear box and a new steering column were needed. the dealer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 93v210000 (steering:wheel and handle bar), although the failures were identical. the dealer would not assist. the vehicle will be repaired at the contact's expense. the failure and current mileages were 131,000.

After driving 125 miles to a sales location, i pulled off of i-85 to make a few cell calls before my meeting. i sat in the car with it idling in a shopping center parking lot making my calls. after about 10 minutes i put the jeep in drive and started rolling through the parking lot. i turned the steering wheel left/right with no response. the front wheels did not respond to the steering wheel at all. had it towed to my mechanic. the 3 bolts holding the steering box to the frame had sheared. two of three bolt tops were still in the steering box, one had dropped out. the three broken studs were still in the frame with the blue thread locker still in place. no warning, no wandering steering, no pop, no nothing. no service had ever been performed on the steering box. rolled in off i-85 where i was doing 70 mph to this parking lot and that was it. had i waited to get off at the next exit, well, i probably would not be writing this now. *tr

Steering gear mounting failure; while driving at 30mpg complete loss of steering occured. one of the 3 mounting bolts had sheered off, another bolt was in place but the bolt tab had broken from the steering gear, and the third bolt was still connected to the steering gear. this vechicle has 141k miles and is not abused or used for off road driving. there was no corrosion on bolts or steering gear. failure of this part at highway speeds could be fatal

While backing out of parking space with steering wheel turned to right, a very loud noise was heard and steering lost. a 4 bolt with threads sheared off was located on ground under vehicle. a repair shop reported that the entire steering box had separated from the vehicle frame. of the three steering box attach bolts, one was still holding a portion of a mounting ear that had previously cracked and separated from the steering box; one had sheared at the threads and was missing; and the third had sheared at the threads and located on the ground. this loss of steering at highway speeds could have resulted in fatal crash.
Steering would make noises whenever turning. it would not return to original position afterwards. took to several mechanics. was informed by first mechanic it was suspension, and not safe to drive. another mechanic informed consumer it was gear box causing noise. also, driver's door came apart at seams, holding it together with a rope. *ak

Power steering leaked at return line fitting on reservoir, fitting on reservoir broken off due to excessive heat that builds up in engine compartment. i have had to replace other plastic components in the engine compartment which have become brittle from seven years of exposure to heat build up within engine compartment. this failure could have caused engine fire, steering fluid was spraying onto exshaust manifold, feel very lucky that i did not have a fire.

Viscous coupling was replaced at 47,000 - 94,000 and now needing replacement at 116,00 miles. this item causes vehicle to have hard steering and even stopping vehicle when turning sharply and slow. making turns now involve backing up unnecessarily and doing 3 point turns instead or simple turning. a very dangerous situation and costly repairing this failure that was unique to 93 vehicles and corrected the next year. unfortunally, 1993 owners are left to fare for themselves.*ak
Steering column has rotated which caused cruise control to be on top instead of on side. contacted the manufacturer, and was informed there were no recalls or technical service bulletins. there should be no problem with steering. *ak
