Defect SummaryGrease applied to the liftgate latch rubber bumpers to ease component assembly caused the bumper to swell, interfering with the movement of the liftgate latch pawl. this prevents the liftgate latching when closed and difficult to open when latched.
Consequence SummaryAn unlatched liftgate can open while the vehicle is inmotion, and could result in an occupant falling out.
Corrective SummaryReplace the liftgate assembly on affected vehicles.

Odi opened ea02-029 to determine whether a safety-related defect trend existed in the my 1997 jeep grand cherokee hood latch assemblies.during ea02-029, there was no specific failure mechanism identified that could differentiate the my 1997 vehicles from other vehicles containing this same hood latch assembly or could account for their higher complaint rate.as a result, odi expanded the scope of this investigation to include all grand cherokee vehicles equipped with the subject hood latch assemblies.in performing ea02-029, it was determined that some of the secondary hood latches in the subject vehicles may exhibit increased operating frictional resistance; however, since none of the primary hood latches showed any evidence of mechanical or operational deficiency and the complaint rate of hood fly-ups measured over an extended exposure time was low, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time.

When car drives over a bump or uneven pavement that whole front end of vehicle shakes along with steering column. it takes a few minutes for shaking to stop- braking makes it worse - must slow down to 30 mph. have taken vehicle 4 times to conrad's auto service - first they replaced stabilizer bar, car still shook. then replaced tires-still shook. third visit replaced shocks-still shook. fourth visit replaced brakes and car still shook. conrad's checked over entire front end and could not find anything- vehicle is very dangerous to drive on highway-because shaking makes driving uncontrollable. *ak *ts *jb

Driver's door fell off. no accident or other cause preceded door falling off. jeep dealer said the cause was a manufacturing defect and that as such, it was not covered by the extended warrantee at 70,000 miles. dealer declined to pay for repair, and declined to bill manufacturer for repair. manufacturer, contacted by owner, did not reply. owner paid approx. $800 to weld door hinge and door structure together. owner was, and is, dissatisfied. owner, typing this report, feels he is being remarkably civil.

Sheet-metal welds in driver's side door have separated, causing door to sag and close incompletely. dealer denies any manufacturer culpability as regards the problem, although numerous related complaints exist at nhtsa and a generous repair discount was offered.

Driver door must be replaced completly . the weld did not hold the shell and inner workings together, allowing the door to swing out of alignment and cause damage to door latch. the driver door broke while traveling at approx 40 miles per hour. driver held door together while driving home. the passenger door can be repaired by body shop by re welding the door together. the locks have not been permantly damaged. both are at the cost of the owner. manufacture will pay nothing. my concern now is the safety of the other two doors and their durability. also if this problem has been corrected by crystler for the future, and that the american manufacturer will not stand behind the product that apparently has a defect of some sort. *ak
