EA02029 | CHRYSLER GROUP LLC | 10/16/2002 | 02/10/2004 | HOOD LATCH FAILURE
Odi opened ea02-029 to determine whether a safety-related defect trend existed in the my 1997 jeep grand cherokee hood latch assemblies.during ea02-029, there was no specific failure mechanism identified that could differentiate the my 1997 vehicles from other vehicles containing this same hood latch assembly or could account for their higher complaint rate.as a result, odi expanded the scope of this investigation to include all grand cherokee vehicles equipped with the subject hood latch assemblies.in performing ea02-029, it was determined that some of the secondary hood latches in the subject vehicles may exhibit increased operating frictional resistance; however, since none of the primary hood latches showed any evidence of mechanical or operational deficiency and the complaint rate of hood fly-ups measured over an extended exposure time was low, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time. |

When making right or left turns it is difficult to steer and the steering wheel becomes stiff. the front end made a noise as if the frame was cracked or broken. an independent shop replaced ball joints, upper and lower. but the problem still occurred. *ak there appeared to be a frame fracture in the frame member which caused the frame member to crack/snap when the steering wheel was turned. the consumer has spent 1500 dollars trying to correct the problem with no success. *sc *jb

Sun visor clips break 4 or more times per year, visors swing around during driving hitting driver and passenger in the face impairing drivers vision. these things break so much the dealer thinks it's funny. this is an unsafe situation and distracts drivers of these vehicles. every time the vehicle is exposed to temperatures below 20 degrees or above 100 degrees the part breaks. *ak

94 grand cherokee. this will be the forth time that i have replaced the fuel pump in my jeep. same behavior, stalls without notice while decelerating or letting off the accelerator. if not replaced right away it will not stay started when you first start it for the day. eventually it will not start at all. i also had to replace the driver side door hinge which came completely off the door. it was making popping noise when opening and shutting of the door. had it check on several occasions and was told that jeep had a problem with the doors. eventually the door fell off. i have never seen this before. i was shocked to find out that a door was $1600.00. my back door on driver side is popping as well. i guess i don't open and shut the back as much. but the body shop said it will eventually fall off. have there been any other concerns like these two. *jb

Driver side door had completely failed. i was unable to open and close the door safely. this occurred over time and with typical use, driving roughly 1000-12000/year. it occurred at roughly 92000. i have had the car it's whole lifetime and there has been nothing to exacerbate this problem, other than opening and closing the door. the passenger side door, as it wasn't used as much, was slowly getting to the same state but was still functional. repair cost $600 to reweld the door hinges.*ak

Door hinge was welded before by previous owner, so not positive that hinges are original - could be replacement or could be original that was welded. spoke to willie dowling at dowling brothers autobody repair specialists, 400 lake avenue, saint james, new york (631) 584-7300. he told me that he has repaired about 50 of these jeeps (with the hinge problem) over the years.*ak

My rear liftgate door hatch when opened fully will not stay up. it falls down all the time and if you are not aware of this it will hit you on your head. you have to hold it up. i have been in contact with chrysler and they claim this is not a warranty issue. the representative informed me it is my responsibility and my problem to repair it. this is a safety issue not a mechanical warranty problem. *nm
