Defect SummaryNapa and carter replacement fuel pumps manufactured by otd, inc., and distributed by federal mogal, may have an improperly installed check valve. the part numbers of these pumps are p74697m and p74708m. they were manufactured between july 15 and 27, 2002. they are for use as aftermarket replacement parts only on model year (my)1995 and 1996 jeep grand cherokee vehicles. this recall does not involve the daimlerchrysler corporation or any of its products.
Consequence SummaryThe pressure in the fuel system may exceed the limits of the fuel system components, possibly creating a fuel leak and risk of fire.
Corrective SummaryIf you purchased an aftermarket replacement fuel pump for your my 1995 or 1996 jeep grand cherokee after july 15, 2002, and are not sure whether the fuel pump is one of thoses involved in this recall, you should contact federal mogal at 1-800-560-1400 to make arrangements to have your vehicle inspected and repaired if necessary free of charge.

 A relatively minor traffic accident occurred on may 18, 2002. coming down the exit ramp of the interstate, proceeded through on the green light, about 35 mph. at the intersection my jeep impacted with the other car in a glancing blow. the other car coming from left to right. my left front corner against their right front side. before the car came to rest, an engine fire erupted my 1998 jeep grand cherokee. the fire completely consumed the engine compartment; all wiring, hoses and some metal parts melted. the fire appeared to erupt on the drivers side of the engine. . the first responder, local pd, efforts to extinguish the fire were futile. the fire quickly began to enter passenger compartment. the fire dept responded and extinguished. car is totaled. fire should not have happened.*ak .

 While exiting an off ramp consumer began to smell smoke. another vehicle pulled up beside the consumer informing him that the jeep was on fire. the owner pulled the jeep over, and the consumer discovered fire under the rear of the jeep. the fire deptartment was summoned, and the fire was extinguished. the jeep was taken to an independent service station, who informed the consumer that the differential plug was missing, and the leaky fluid caused the fire. *ak

 This report documents 2 fuel pump failures within a one year period of time. dealer has indicated numerous fuel pump failures with jeep; manufacturer is not acknowledging product defect issue even though they can not keep the parts in stock or make available through 3rd party providers to keep up with the number of failures. i am requesting the nhtsa to review the number of consumer complaints and request a product recall and reimburesment of expenses occurred to fix this evergrowing and potentially dangerous product failure in the jeep product line. dt

 Replaced fuel pump on 2/27/03 after i purchased the jeep used on 2/26/03. replaced fuel pump again on 3/37/03 (broke down in another state). took jeep in for transmission failure on 4/3/03. sat in shop for 30 days while warranty company decided what to do with it. replaced transmission. jeep dies in traffic on 5/5/03. called shop got runaround. called warranty company and took to another shop. told it was fuel pump again (warranty company didn't pay the last 550.00 to replace fuel pump) and also the gas tank is deteriorating, warranty company will not cover due to high fuel pump replacement. also told it could be crank sensor in 4.0l engines. not happy to pay 9000.00 for a vehicle that has only been driven 3 weeks out of 3 months. still fighting with warranty company. *nlm

 I have had 4 rebuilt fuel pumps replaced on my 95 jeep grand cherokee since noember 4,2002 and they keep failing. there is nothing wrong with my car other than the fuel pump. the mechanic has checked the tank. i have now found out that the dealer selling the pump to the station may not cover the warranty. it sounds like this should be a recall but the dealer only wants to send me a new pump. the dealer is northeast auto outlet, grant & academy road in phila.,pa.

 My fuel pump failed, costing me $600 for a new pump + $300 to flush the gas tank. i was told by the repair shop (hoselton jeep, fairport, ny) that these failures are an epidemic in 95/96 jeeps. evidently faulty manufacturer of the fuel system causes fuel tank problems that result in fuel pump failure. my small dealer says he has to fix 200-300 of these each year. if you multiply that by the number of jeep dealers/shops that repair jeeps, the number nationwide must be in the tens of thousands or more. daimler/chrysler/jeep refuses to admit there is a problem, but this seems to be a clear manufacturing defect if there ever was one.*jb

 When my jeep wouldn't start, i had it towed to my local dealer (norco jeep,pottstown,pa). the fuel pump had drawn sediment from the tank, and both had to be replaced, the tank was on backorder till 1/15. i rented a car to get to work. i called 1/14 to check, and the backorder was now till 1/31. i contacted other dealers. one told me he replaces dozens of tanks per winter, and another said the tank had been on backorder since 9/2001. i contacted jeep by e-mail (ref# 9538888). they asked to contact me by phone. i agreed. robert weaver had his parts dept locate a suitable tank and contacted my svc manager. he was unable to locate a tank in this area, so i put him in touch with jeep in michigan, who put him in touch with a parts outlet there, which shipped a tank that proved to be unsuitable. the svc manager contacted the tank supplier, and the new delivery date had been pushed back to 2/8, and there were over 135 fuel tanks on order for this model!! there is apparently a design flaw that does not allow for a filter to be placed between the tank and the pump, thereby allowing sediment to foul the pump. eventually, the dealer discovered a suitable way to clean my tank (which could have been done the day my jeep was towed). since the fuel pump has a 12-mo 12,000 mi warranty, i decided to cut my losses and have them perform the procedure. to the best of my knowledge, the fuel tank has never been delivered. there were 3 other jeeps at my dealer awaiting tanks when mine was towed in. i have driven over 3 million miles in my life, mostly in chrysler products, and i have never had to replace a fuel tank that didn't have a hole in it. i still own a 1968 plymouth gtx with over 300,000 miles that has never had the tank replaced. there is obviously a flaw in the design, and i should not have to pay $1530.00 and miss time from work (1.5 days) due to a poor design. i finally got my car back 1/24-20 days after it was towed. this flaw should be a recall, and i should be reimbursed.*ak

 Fuel pump failure,towed to my local mechanic(not dealer).a new pump was installed and when the mechanic got it from the dealership,they said to look for algae in the tank.they did so,and there was none!i picked up the jeep and drove 40 miles only to have it stop running again.after having it towed back in again,only to find out another fuel pump had failed.the mechanic called the dealership to tell them of the second failure and to get a replacement;they told him to replace the tank along with the fuel pump because the tanks have been deteriorating and causing the fuel pump failures.the replacement tank from jeep has been redesigned and carries a new part number,thus recognizing a defect! they also admitted to changing 6 other tanks for that reason just last month!(with fuel pumps).this flaw is obvious to the dealers and they aren't going to be calling you to initiate a recall i wouldn't think;so maybe some investigation is necessary just to verify the obvious.i'm $1300.00 in the hole for an obvious manufacturers flaw.please notify me of the what has to be recall(reimbursemet). thank you

 Recently the fuel pump failed resulting in the vehicle to shuting down immediately. the owner is told that the entire fuel tank needs to be replaced due to mold growing inside the tank and getting into the fuel pump. please describe details.*jb

 The plastic fuel tank of the 1995 jeep grand cherokee was discribed to me as deterioratingby the dealership service department today. this deterioration has caused the fuel pump to fail a number of times, with some occuring in traffic. three fuel pumps have been replaced in the last 12 months before the underlying deterioration of gas tank was discovered. the tank deterioration is causing the fuel pump failures. i have found numerous instances on the world wide web of other jeep owners complaining of the same problem. many have yet to discover that the fuel tank and not the pump is the root of the problem. if this tank is deteriorating, is it still safe in a rear end collision. have there been instances of stalled jeeps involved in accidents? has chrysler acknowledged the problem?

 Two fuel pumps have failed. consumer's independent mechanic stated that fuel tank was not compatible with gas. fuel tank material inside is crumbling causing the pump to clog up. *ak dealer stated that tank is a common failure and must be replaced, consumer feels the fuel tank is made from recycled materials which are not chemically resistant to gasoline causing the tank's interior to disintegrate. *tt
