Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.
NotesThis recall only pertains to aftermarket napa, raybestos, ac delco, aimco, carquest, and bendix brake hydraulic master cylinders and has no relation to any original equipment installed on daimlerchrysler or ford vehicles.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger and multi-purpose vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the states of connecticut, illinois, indiana, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, or wisconsin, and the district of columbia. the front disc brake rotors can experience severe corrosion if operated for an extensive period in the salt belt. if the rotors are not replaced, the corrosion can eventually compromise the structural integrity of the stamped steel center hub section of the rotor.
Consequence SummaryThe reduced strength can allow the cast iron wear surface to separate from the hub, reducing the brake effectiveness of the vehicle.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace these rotors with rotors that are coated with a corrosion protection.
NotesOwner notification began december 20, 1999. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

When the car doesn't start in drive i have to switch gears to neutral. inorder to switch gears i have to step on the brake. once the car is in drive and i release my foot off of the brake, there has been 4 times when the car just shot forward. my first reaction is to step on the brakes. there has been no injuries invloved, just severe nervousness. i don't know if there is really anything wrong, so nothing has been checked. i just stay prepared to slam on the brakes. i'm knew to jeeps and i thought this is what jeeps do until i read the article on sudden acceleration which prompted me to fill out this form.*ak

Rusted, defective disc rotors compromised the brake's performance in an emergency situation. in heavy traffic, on a two lane road, there was an accident ahead, drivers slammed on their brakes, but my son was unable to stop quickly enough and hit the '84 volvo ahead of him. my son was cited for following too closely, although he does not think he was following too closely. vehicular damage appeared very minor, but the other driver is claiming that his '84 volvo is totaled. the impact was at very low speed. my son received no injuries, and his airbag did not deploy. the other driver complained of a headache and backache, saw his doctor, was treated with naprosyn (alleve), and is fine. we had received no information from chrysler about the recall on the front brake rotors. we found out about the recall the next day (1/21/2000) when it was announced on cnn. i called chrysler and had the recall performed. (our jeep was affected because it had been housed in ohio prior to 8/99 when we bought it). the receipt from the dealer for the recall work says the rotors were defective. after the new rotors were installed we noticed a very signigicant difference in stopping ability. i reported this to chrysler, requested that a test of stopping time/ability with the old rotors and with the new rotors be done, but chrysler refused. if we had been informed of the recall, we could have had the rotors replaced and avoided the accident. i understand that rotors are a wear item, but obviously, rust causes metal to wear and thin more quickly. we believe the rusted rotors adversely affected the ability of the brakes to stop our jeep quickly enough in an emergency situation. *ak
