Nhtsa has conducted extensive analysis of the data regarding fuel tank integrity for the model year (my) 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokee (jgc). as a result of that work, the agency has decided to upgrade its safety defect investigation to an engineering analysis and to expand the scope of vehicles included in the investigation. nhtsa's assessment of the data collected during this investigation indicates that rear-impact-related tank failures and vehicle fires are more prevalent in the jgc than in the non-jeep peer vehicles. in addition, the agency's analysis of its fars data for the peer vehicles and three jeep models shows a higher incidence of rear-impact, fatal fire crashes for the jeep products.pe10-031 had focused on the fuel tank system integrity of the jgc vehicles during rear-end collisions and impacts.the fuel tank is located at the rear of the vehicle, between the bumper and axle, and is manufactured from a plastic material (hdpe).three peer vehicles (across the same my range as the jgc) were identified for comparative assessment: the chevrolet blazer, ford explorer, and toyota 4runner.odi has collected and assessed a significant volume of data for the jgc and three peer vehicles under the defect petition (dp) 09-005 and pe10-031, much of which was either provided by the petitioner or by the subject and peer manufacturers in response to odi's information request letters.nhtsa has also utilized its fars database.fatal crash data was collected for the jgc and its three peers, along with data for two other jeep vehicles, the cherokee and liberty, which were also manufactured with rear mounted fuel tanks and assessed by odi as jeep peer vehicles.based on the agency's current analysis, odi is upgrading its investigation to determine whether the subject vehicles contain a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety.the subject vehicles for ea12-005 will be my 1993-2004 jgc, my 1993-2001 cherokee, and my 2002-2007 liberty; the estimated production volumes for these vehicles is approximately 5.1 million, although attrition is a factor for the older vehicles.please note that the counts shown in the above failure report summary are for the jgc only (values shown in the total column are unique).data for the other jeep models and possibly other peer models will be collected during the investigation.the odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers:506249, 549376, 734783, 869217, 10009553, 10335943, 10351589, 10351980, 10357528.

In a letter dated october 2, 2009, the center for auto safety (cas) petitioned nhtsa to open a defect investigation and recall model year 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokees.cas alleged that the subject vehicles have defective fuel tank storage systems that present a fire hazard in crashes. cas alleged that the plastic fuel tank's placement behind the rear axle and below the rear bumper, and the lack of adequate shielding, make it more vulnerable to rupture or leakage from a rear-impact by another vehicle (including damage from other components located on the grand cherokee), or in the case of rollover crashes, from other external objects.cas also alleged that the fuel filler neck tears off in crashes.in its petition, cas cites data from nhtsa's fatality analysis reporting system (fars) showing 172 fatal fire crashes with 254 fatalities involving the subject vehicles from calendar years 1992 through 2008.cas stated that there have been at least 44 crashes with 64 total fatalities (subject and non-subject vehicles) where fire was entered as the most harmful event (mhe) in the fars database.in response to the cas petition, odi made a preliminary examination of available data.fars data showed 2,988 occupants of the subject vehicles have died in crashes since 1992.of those, 55 died in 44 crashes where fire was listed as the most harmful event.identifying crashes most likely associated with the alleged defect as described by cas (defined as the subject vehicle being struck at the 5, 6 or 7 o'clock positions) isolated 10 crashes with 13 occupant fatalities.odi also reviewed the vehicle owner questionnaires (voq) database and identified 12 reports alleging a) a post-crash fuel tank leak and/or b) a post-crash fire potentially related to a fuel tank leak.of the 12 reports, 10 involved fires (two involved fuel leaks only) with 9 alleged injuries and 1 alleged fatality.the existence of these post-crash fires does not, by itself, establish a defect trend.further review and investigation into these incidents is needed to determine the existence of any relationship between the alleged defect and each fire or leak.it should be noted that odi also conducted a preliminary review of the early warning reporting (ewr) data that did not find the subject vehicles to be over-represented for post-crash fires.odi's initial review neither supports nor excludes the possibility that a defect exists in the subject vehicles.however, odi has always taken the position that vehicle fires pose a significant safety risk.accordingly, odi has granted the petition to further investigate the conditions associated with post-crash fires in these vehicles.

This is a commonly known defect with these jeeps which has never been adequately addressed by the nhtsa. someone is going to get killed if the manufacturer is not held responsible. infamous stalling problem. whether going 10 mph or 70 mph, vehicle will stall with no warning. generally will re-start after turning off ignition, but not always immediately. on my jeep, i have replaced the computer module, crankshaft position sensor, fuel pump, fuel filters, maf sensor, distributor cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires. i have had the computer module wiring harness reworked. still stalls, and i have been forced to park the jeep for safety reasons.

Every time i fill up my 96 jeep grand cherokee laredo at a gas station i need to pump it in slowly and manually. the nozzle, if set on high or low immediately clicks off. if it does not shut off, it spews fuel out of the filler. this has been an ongoing problem for the past 2 years. this happens regardless of how much fuel is in the tank before i start the filling process. pumping the fuel myself is getting old. i live in nj where the customer is technically not allowed to do this as our stations are full service and this must be done by an attendant. fortunately, i go to the same station and they are used to me doing it myself. otherwise the attendant has to babysit the nozzle and pump it in slower than the slow setting. i have tried other brand gas stations and still have the overflow problem.

My vehicle stalls when it is hot outside. i have had the coil replaced then i had the catalytic converter replaced and o2 sensor and it still stalled on start up. i took it to the dealership and it stalled and they told me it was my fuel pump. i spent 965 on a fuel pump i didn't need because it is still stalling and they have no clue why. i seen this problem on mean forums. i think the dealer should be aware of this problem and should know how to fix them not make someone spend a thousand dollars on a might.

I understand that earlier model years have a recall or something similar becasue of a coating used on the inside of the gas tank that gets eaten away over time by an additive in the gas that is used in the north. this lining then clogs the pump and filter causing failure. the cost of parts and labor endied up being over 800 dollars. if this is a known problem why isn't it taken care of? mr

Just over a year ago, my 1996 jeep grand cherokee laredo encountered a defective fuel pump. as i was in the process of procuring a replacement pump, a friend told me to check for recalls/tsb's on it as he had experienced many fuel pump problems with these. there were, i believe two tsb's involving my vehicle so i called chrysler. they told me to take the vehicle to the dealership to determine if the problem was the pump. i told her i had already done that. she told me that they had to determine it and if it was the pump, chrysler would cover the repair. i had it towed to chrysler ($65) and they indeed found it was a defective fuel pump and replaced it and i was charged over $600 for the repair. after the fact, chrysler declined to pay for what they promised. i had found a replacement pump that i was prepared to install myself for $163 and had chrysler been honest and declined to cover the repair, i would have accomplished it myself for $163 and been able to go on vacation to the outer banks instead of paying almost $700 and having to cancel my vacation. i have contacted , emailed, etc many people at chrysler to no avail. i have since learned that when you deal with chrysler, you better get it in writing! please help if you can!. *nm

On december 12, 2003, for the second time in three years, the fuel pump on our jeep failed. in discussing the failure with two different mechanics and then with our local jeep dealer, i was advised that jeep had determined that the gas tank for this vehicle is subject to corrosion whereby minute particles float in the tank and can travel into the fuel pump (the filter that jeep puts in these cars is not designed to trap these small particles) causing the fuel pump to freeze. i was advised by the jeep dealership that a tsb was issued in 1997 regarding this failure (i believe it is tsb 140697). i note that there are at least 42 reports of similar problems on your website. this is a safety problem that jeep has refused to acknowledge or take any responsibility for.*ak

According to my mechanic, chrysler is aware of the problem with the fuel pump in the 1996 and 1997 models grand cherokee. i am very disturbed that knowing this problem exits, the company still charges over $600 for the part. currently, i am a first year medical student. on all 3 occasions that the car would not start, i had major exams to get to. not only does this jeopardize my academic career, but also disrupts my focus and concentration overall. for these reasons, i plan to get rid of this vehicle and have lost any faith i had previously in owning an american-made vehicle.*ak

The fuel pump failed because the fuel tank liner was beginning to come apart and parts of the liner were clogging the fuel pump causing it to fail. could this liner/fuel bladder failure possibly result in serious fire or injury/death because of failure?

Engine did not run due to fuel tank coating coming off. this coating is there to provide added assurance that there be no fuel leak (and a fire) if the plastic wall of the tank leaks (on its own or after a crash). thus there is a fire safety hazard.*ak the manufacturer and dealer will not replace the tank (even after 3 recurances of the engne running problem, due to the coating coming off the tank wall and clogging the fuel filter and - in 1 case - even the fuel pump). they, instead, flush the tank (removing even more coating) and re-instal it. i am now using a tank with probably very little fire-protection coating. i feel this is a huge safety problem.

I was stranded due to fuel pump failure. dealer said this is due to faulty manufacture of fuel tanks in 1996 jeep grand cherokees and i must replace fuel pump and tank. dealer will not cover my $1,200. expense plus towing costs. i have been without my car for 1 week so far...it is estimated to be another two weeks until the fuel tank arrives from back order. apparently it is on back order because the part has to be replaced for so many others. chrysler does not want to issue a recall because it is costly, but it is the right thing to do. a recall needs to be issued. faulty manufacture should be covered by the manufacturer. *ak

Fuel pump/gas tank/computer all need to be replaced as a result of deterioration of the gas tank lining. fuel pump overheated, causing computer to malfunction and eventually break. how many people does it take to lose a ton of money because of a defective product that could be dangerous while driving to issue a recall.

The plastic gas tank in the 1996 jeep cherokee appears to deform due to aging and plastic creep so that the seal around the fuel pump module leaks. often the leak is severe. my cherokee leaked several gallons when i attempted to fill the tank. replacement of gaskets, etc., does not repair the problem. i discovered that there have apparently been a large number of recent failures of this type, as replacement tanks are on long backorder. the leak is a fire hazard. *ak

Car went into reverse when parked park reversed into a tree down the driveway at about 10 mph. there was extensive damage to the rear end. then, two months later, i was parked in park in front of our farm gate, motor running, when i hopped out to get the mail from the box across the lane. as i started to leave the open door, the car started to move from the stopped position in reverse. i ran alongside and jumped back it and stomped on the brake. it was this time that i looked at the gear shift and noted that it had moved from the park position to a place just above the r for reverse but indeed was in reverse! my body shop person had informed me of another jeep owner who was pinned against his garage door when his jeep grand cherokee went from park into reverse. i can get him to get in touch with this organization. the dealers response to me was i propbably did not have it in gear properly and did i have the parking brake on? believe me when i say.....i sure put it on now and check it double but sure don't trust it enough to idle in park......although after driving for 35 years i have never had the problem with other cars or trucks! the fuel pump had evidently been a problem for them as the dealer said that there have been several failures but no recall the pump has to be replaced by factory part at $500 plus dollars with an additional $700.00 for labor to install and even then, we can't guarantee it but for 6 months! thanks to the la times for the article on the jeep reverse problem and i will bet you that there are more than a small' number of complaints regarding this issue.*ak

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee limited stalls intermittently for no apparent reason and without warning. normally the car will stall while idling either immediately upon starting or while sitting at an intersection. i have read online where many, many, many people are having the same problem which seems to be extremely difficult for a mechanic to diagnose. i have installed a new starter, distributor cap and wiring with no luck. many people are very annoyed about having to spend money on mechanics guesses and still not getting the problem solved. this stalling problem is obviously very dangerous, especially if it occurs while the vehicle is in motion as it would be very easy to get rear-ended. for this reason, i am afraid to drive my vehicle. *tr

I have a 96 grand cherokee ltd 4x4 with 115k miles. since it turned 65k miles i have replaced the brake pads and drums 3 times. i have water leaks in the seat belt wells, the passenger side window, and the belts are wet when it rains. today, water is pooling in the floor of the driver's side. water pours from just above the accelerator. must be from a/c?the rear door hatch has jammed in lock position. the electronic mileage/ fuel readout (on ceiling module) fluctuates wildly and is inaccurate. the catalytic converter went out at 64,975 miles. now have a crack in the exhaust manifold, quoted $1200 by dealer to repair. i have gone through stock 3 radios, tuner problems. massive a/c problems in past. i paid a non dealer to repair it, the repairs held for 30 days and same problem started again. then had dealer repair and it was a recall item so was covered after i'd paid for 2 prev repair jobs at $1100 total. the power steering pump went out at 90k miles. replaced so many other parts, i'd have to refer to the service records for more details. this list is only from memory. total cost over 3 yrs....around $4000! oh, and the rear hatch/door paint is faded and dull, totally different from the rest of the car. all black metal painted parts paint is coming off. has been for couple of years. also the roof rattle really loud at over 50mph. the power outlet came apart still attached to my phone cord one day. finally, the front end has some problem with the axle? and will cost approx $700 to repair. i thought i had a lemon until i talked with 3 other jeep owners, they've had similar problems. do we have any recourse with chrysler over these vehicles...i am considering involving an attny.

I have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4 which has had 5 fuel pump modules and one gas tank replaced since 08.10.2000. the vehicle is in need of another fuel pump module. the dealers have difficulty in replicating the condition. the fuel gauge is providing false readings; typically giving an empty tank reading when full, 3/4 full or 3/4 empty. i have heard the same complaint from numerous other grand cherokee owners. i would think the maker/dealer would have spotted a trend by now or is overlooking it because of the cost involved with finding a new vendor. all receipt copies of work performed concerning this matter are intact. *la
