 At high and low speeds, and when stopped without any warning my 1996 grand cherokee will die and immediately steering is lost. this is totally frightening and life-threatening. the car will start immediately to get out of roadways. i've spent days researching this situation on-line and it is outrageous that there is no recall, there are years of complaints about this situation . i called jeep today at 1-877-426-5337 and was told the phone number of a jeep dealer, along with sincere apologies that there is no recall for this problem. the solution may be that 2 screws associated with the pcm are too long. people have spent thousands and thousands of dollars fixing everything on these jeeps but nothing has worked. i respectfully demand to know why there is no recall, this is a public safety issue!!!!! thank you for your prompt reply. lives depend on it. this is a life-endangering situation - mine and others. there needs to be a recall now.

 Ralphs jeep claims chrysler has not yet manufactered the secondary detent system to fix the recall.after contacting daimler chrysler they claim they have no recall listed for this problem.this recall is listed on your website nhtsa campaign id # 02v053000.on 3/19/02 the transmission on this vehicle had to be replaced by cottman transmission (508-995-3858),medal shavings were found in the transmission pan which is according to my mechanic, caused by shifter lever problems.*ak

 Consumer states as she was driving out of her dirveway, she stopped put the vehicle into park and got out of the vehicle to retrieve an object from the ground, when consumer left the vehicle she noticed that the vehicle started to roll back, instantly consumer attempted to jump back into the vehicle and secure it, in which she was unsuccessful and the vehicle proceeded to roll backwards, crashing into a neighbors house causing extensive damage to the house,garage and parked vehicles, consumer was also injured while attempting to stop the vehicle.*jb

 I put the vehicle in park, stepped out of the car, turned around and glanced at the car, and saw that it was rolling backwards down the street. i ran to jump into the car, landed chest first on the driver seat, with my legs dangling out the door. i saw that the vehicle was in reverse, rather than park, as i had left it. i threw the car into park. it kept rolling, picking up speed and forcing my body to begin slipping out the door. i reached for the foot brake, couldn't reach it, and fell out the door. the vehicle's wheels rolled 12 inches from my head. i jumped up and watched the vehicle crash into a neighbor's garage and stop. i don't know the dollar cost damage to the garage. *ak

 The transmission was rebuilt in jan.2001. on may 4th, 2001 i took vechile to amocco transmission to get a diagnostic of the transmission. was told there was a problem, since my vechicle was still under warranty, was told to take back to dealer. jerry's linclon-jeep dealer had my vechilce for two weeks and said nothing was wrong with the transmission, i gave them amocco's diagnotic report. on 5/20/01 i was driving on rt 81 south -va, when i put my jeep in to 4 wheel drive, it started to burn, called 911 and told to get out of vechicle. the jeep then proceeded to catch on fire. the woddstock,va fir department put out fire. it was towed to the woodstock garage(jeep dealer). it is estimated to have about $7500 worth of damage. i was told by my insurance company it might be totaled.. *ak

 The transmission problem may have existed when we purchased car. but being that it was new to us, we did not know the difference between a good or bad transmission. i did at first say something to the dealership about the transmission, but they said it was fine that this is how it normally is. but the same issue that i have felt since day number one of our purchase is exactly what is wrong with it today. i have also found out from several different transmission specialists that chrylser jeeps have an inherent problem with their transmissions. they all fail for the same exact reasons. it is apparently an inherent defect in the transmission.*ak

 This vehicle has cost us over $3,000 in the first 1 year and half we have owned it. i have never owned a vehicle with this little of mileage and had everything go up. we feel this auto is a total lemon and people should be made aware of the problems of this particular vehicle. we have never towed anything nor had it on anything other surface other than a paved road. i'm not sure what if anything you can do for us, but letting the nhtsa know about this vehicle is some reassurance. what really upsets me is that we bought this vehicle from a supposed reputable dealer. thank you for your time. i'd appreciate any information you can provide me on this particular vehicle as far as any other owner complaints etc. thank you for your time and attention to this matter. no safety defect listed within summary. *ak

 Purchased vehicle from mccune chrysler-plymouth-jeep as a previosly owned vehicle that just finished a lease. on 02/08/2000, while driving home from bowling, the transmission would not upshift causing the engine rpms to climb to 4-5,000 rpm's (continued home, 7 miles). wife next day 02/09/2000, took kids to school and on the freeway to her mom's house ( a distance of only 5 miles), transmission failed to stay engaged, she crept home at about 5-15 mph. this transmission was serviced every 12-18,000 miles. the last service done was at 70,150 miles, (atf+3, filter&gasket)failure happened at 77,740 miles, i was stunned! i called mccune and asked if there was a recall and if there was anything that they can do, i was given an estimate of $2,200+, and was told there was no recall. i took the jeep down to a local transmission shop (coronas transmission) and was told that the transmission was burnt up. went to get a second opinion at aamco, given estimate of $1800+. i was so disappointed that a top-of-the-line jeep grand cherokee limited 4x4 failed to perform at such a low mileage. in my disheartened state, on 02/11/2000 i traded my pride and joy (took a heavy loss) for a ford expedition xlt. as much as i loved my jeep's styling, performance and luxury, i will never buy another. *ak

(3) 4wd transfer case very hard to get into full time 4wd. also, very hard to get out of any 4wd mode (back to 2wd). indicator shows 2wd mode when truck still in 4-wd, requires violent reversing to get out of 4wd.  Problem... driving down the road or stopped at light or in the middle of a turn or on expressway... it would shut off without warning, sometime it would restart immediately, sometimes not!!!... extremely dangerous situations developed, which i was lucky!!! 1996 jeep grand cherokee, 4.0 , 6 cyl.... spent 6 months doing repairs/ replacement parts and many ,many dollars spent tracking down part after part. using diagnostics machine to determine faulty part... problem was the power control module ( pcm or ecu same part) was defective and either was misreading codes or giving out bad codes to parts (like to the crank shaft position sensor or the coil, or the 01 or 02 ox sensors or it goes on and on and on). not sure how it works but you get my drift. since signing up with cnet.com, have found many people across america with the same issue on jeep with different years (1994/2000) and models. to search... look up jeep stalls or jeep fixed and you will see other topics and forums around that topic and you will also see where the manufacture doesn't know how to address the problem either. another possible recall issue is the screws that hold the pcm might be too long and are grounding out the unit after paint wears off on firewall... important to read all articles and different forums!!! ... is a must lastly... instead of replacing pcm's, is it possible to have the pcm re flashed under recall??? i'm stretching, but maybe electrical power storms and rain is causing parts to defect??? lastly... jeep parts consists of module power units that work or don't work but the pcm reads the codes and adjusts the workable of the motor... another issue is that there are several issues that will shut down the motor besides the fore mentioned parts... ie... asd relay, the security system, door locks, steering column, the electronic key, the back windshield wiper... *tr

 Vehicle has excessive and violant vibrations at 65-70 mph, loud roaring noise. two chrysler 5 star dealership has serviced vehicle on numerous occasions including a factory zone rep analysis. currently the vehicle has been serviced with a new gear shift differential, transfer case and drive shaft, 4 new tires and shocks with no improvements resulting in $3000 in service cost. no resolution.... vehicle is extremely dangerous with extreme violant shaking. chrysler is contending that the vehicle has high mileage and is not under manufacture warranty and is not liable. i have researched other similar conditions with the same consumer complaints. many were accident related. *ak

 I have experienced two incidents in the past three months involving my placing the vehicle into park and having the vehicle move in reverse while idling. there is also a frequent locking of the shift mechanism after sitting for periods. the shifter becomes locked in the park position and i must use force to remove the shifter from the park position. this produces the sound of breaking plastic although i notice no other adverse affects to the shifting. i had thought on both occassions when the car went into reverse on its own that i had merely misplaced the shifter, but now i think not. please keep me informed as to any possible manufacturer adjustment or recall of the problem.*ak

 While warming up jeep in garage on flat surface i proceded to exit vehicle to return to the house, upon closing the door the jeep began to roll backwards i attempted to open the door and return to the vehicle i was unable to enter the vehicle drug me out the garage the front driver's door was bent forward to the bumper by the side of the garage i was squished between the side of the garage and the jeep. upon leaqving the garage i continued to attempt to stop the vehicle by pressing the brake with my hands i was unable to do this imy feet slipped on the ice in the driveway and i fell beneth the vehicle. the left front wheel ran over my left leg at the calf. ithe vehicle continued to roll until it came to a stop in a pile of snow against a light pole on the opposite side of the streed. at that time the vehicle started to roll forward and was stopped by the snow. the driver's door could not be closed, the engine would not start due to hitting the light pole with the bumper the collesion device was activated. i was taken to the emergency room with damaged nerves and tissue luckily no broken bones. the vehicle was taken to the jeep dealer in anchorage alaska where they replaced some parts and fixed the door. no action was taken despite my attempts at that time to notify the manufacturer through the dealer of the defective system that allowed the jeep to slip into reverse.*ak

 My wife was going to work on 08/14/00. she warmed the jeep up, drove up to the porch, left the engine running and placed the jeep in park. while inside the house, she noticed the jeep suddenly lurched and started moving backwards( this was on a nonpaved flat surface). . she ran out the house to try and stop it, but too late. luckily, it drove through my pump house in the back yard. the wheels rolled over a 4 high cement base which lodged the wheels to a stop.. it had shoved out the door and side of a 10' x 10 ' shed covering my water pump. it put a dent in my rear hatch door top and busted the rear left turn signal. i did not report it to police because it was in my yard and it did not dawn on me the transmission may have jumped out of park. however, on approximately april 12,2001 i had placed it in park , with the engine running, when suddenly it jumped in reverse with me still sitting in the seat. i immediately braked and again placed the shifter into park. nothing happened again, so i just shrugged it off as one of those things. but the other day i was talking with another jeep owner who had the same thing happen. so, i would like to report this incident in case others have had the same problem. i do not leave my jeep running in park at any time now, i do not trust it. plus, with the warranty runout, i fiqured nothing would be done about it anyway and i would just go through a lot of expense checking it for nothing. but, i do believe there is some kind of intermittent problem with these transmissions.*ak

 Car went into reverse when parked park reversed into a tree down the driveway at about 10 mph. there was extensive damage to the rear end. then, two months later, i was parked in park in front of our farm gate, motor running, when i hopped out to get the mail from the box across the lane. as i started to leave the open door, the car started to move from the stopped position in reverse. i ran alongside and jumped back it and stomped on the brake. it was this time that i looked at the gear shift and noted that it had moved from the park position to a place just above the r for reverse but indeed was in reverse! my body shop person had informed me of another jeep owner who was pinned against his garage door when his jeep grand cherokee went from park into reverse. i can get him to get in touch with this organization. the dealers response to me was i propbably did not have it in gear properly and did i have the parking brake on? believe me when i say.....i sure put it on now and check it double but sure don't trust it enough to idle in park......although after driving for 35 years i have never had the problem with other cars or trucks! the fuel pump had evidently been a problem for them as the dealer said that there have been several failures but no recall the pump has to be replaced by factory part at $500 plus dollars with an additional $700.00 for labor to install and even then, we can't guarantee it but for 6 months! thanks to the la times for the article on the jeep reverse problem and i will bet you that there are more than a small' number of complaints regarding this issue.*ak

 Multiple rear axle problems, each diagnosed by owner prior to failure. (the dealer didn't want to admit there was a problem) this vehicle has averaged one new rear axle every year, including this year which i am waiting on parts. the engine's faulty mass airflow sensor quit operation while driving down the rocky mountains on some switchback roads. the engine abrubtly quit running, causing the vehicle to loose steering and braking control. only quick thinking by using the parking brake saved the four people in the vehicle from eminent death. the engine reluctantly restarted after a few seconds and we continued down the mountains. however, a few minutes later the engine died without warning for a second time and we were forced to hold the jeep on the mountainside with the parking brake engaged. i can't believe no one has died from this vehicle! this situation has occured on two separate trips, approximately one year apart, after reprogramming the engine management computer, and replacing the mass airflow sensor and remapping the engine management computer for a second time. for the first two years i owned this vehicle, it was in the shop over 36 times for warranty related repairs. what a piece of junk!( dot number: tire size: p225/65r16 )

 First differential failure happened on vacation trip after i installed two new tires. jeep started making high pitched whine & passengers & i could detect what smelled like hot fluids. stopped & noted liquid on engine, tires, and front differential. liquid was smoking! took to jeep dealer listed in this report & dealer rebuilt front differential. said all was ok. after 200 miles, front differential again failed and this time it was a major jolt! this time at 75 mph in heavy traffic! was able to maneuver thru traffic & get to side of road. front differential was red hot! & i was afraid of a fire. called jeep roadside assistance & they got me a tow. dealer where car was towed said front diff got so hot that it warped! also told me that the cause of failure was because i put new tires on front & not back. said difference in diameters on tires (new vs. worn) caused the quadra-trac drive to fail. later inquiry to damler-chrysler resulted in a verbal response that, if there is as much as 1/2 difference in circumference of tires on the quadra-trac units, a drive train failure can occur. note that jeep had a recall on this type of full-time 4 wheel drives, but explained that a fire could result if a smaller spare tire was used. jeep should have gone further and explained that failure and fire could result from having tires with different circumferences. jeep has a file on my complaint, but wil not discuss or answer any questions. they also refuse to accept any responsibitlty and the written response was, i have thoroughly reviewed your message and the entire file on this matter. your concerns are understandable. unfortunately there is nothing further that can be done to fully address these issues...... i now feel that jeep is well aware of the potential safety hazard associated with this situation and has down played it as much as possible by just issueing a recall for spare tire usage. the public should be advised!

 Vehicle vibration and load roaring noise reported 3 times to dealership. driveshaft was ordered but the parts were on back-order. we were told the vehicle was safe to drive, but the driveshaft vibration caused the transfer case to blow apart on the interstate at 70mph. this nearly cased the vehicle to go out of control. dealership then said the failure was due to vehicle abuse, but we had an independent mechanic and our auto insuance claims adjuster certify that the transfer case failure was due to the excessive vibration of the drive shaft. the bottom line: dealership knew we were driving an un-safe vehicle and tried to cover their error by accusing the customer of vehicle abuse. *ak

 Vehicle vibration and load roaring noise reported 3 times to dealership. driveshaft was ordered but the parts were on back-order. we were told the vehicle was safe to drive, but the driveshaft vibration caused the transfer case to blow apart on the interstate at 70mph. this nearly cased the vehicle to go out of control. dealership then said the failure was due to vehicle abuse, but we had an independent mechanic and our auto insuance claims adjuster certify that the transfer case failure was due to the excessive vibration of the drive shaft. the bottom line: dealership knew we were driving an un-safe vehicle and tried to cover their error by accusing the customer of vehicle abuse. *ak

 Vehicle has excessive and violant vibrations at 65-70 mph, loud roaring noise. two chrysler 5 star dealership has serviced vehicle on numerous occasions including a factory zone rep analysis. currently the vehicle has been serviced with a new gear shift differential, transfer case and drive shaft, 4 new tires and shocks with no improvements resulting in $3000 in service cost. no resolution.... vehicle is extremely dangerous with extreme violant shaking. chrysler is contending that the vehicle has high mileage and is not under manufacture warranty and is not liable. i have researched other similar conditions with the same consumer complaints. many were accident related. *ak

 When turning the wheel left or right there is a grinding noise toward the front underbody. taken to dealership 3 to 4 times for this problem. the last time, the dealership replaced the drivetrain, front axle and brakes. consumer still experiencing a minor problem. *ak

 Owner of 1996 jeep cherokee - problems with transfer case began in 1998-1999, at 50, 000 miles. transfer case has been replaced and rebuilt on 3 occasions. feb 25, 2003 took vehicle to dealership - same problem, need to replace transfer case again. have been advised that once our warranty expires, they will not warranty the transfer case replacement. will be happy to provide details and records of over 17 repairs to this vehicle. after second transfer case replacement contacted chrysler because we felt this was a defective part. each time it is replaced or repaired, the repair does not last. daimler chrysler representative refused to meet with us to review problems. *nlm

 1996 jeep grand cherokee has failure in transfer case. this is evidently a consistent problem with this vehicle. no evidence of recall. total cost to repair is approximately $1100. the vehicle would not shift out of 4 wheel drive.
