Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.
NotesThis recall only pertains to aftermarket napa, raybestos, ac delco, aimco, carquest, and bendix brake hydraulic master cylinders and has no relation to any original equipment installed on daimlerchrysler or ford vehicles.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger and multi-purpose vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the states of connecticut, illinois, indiana, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, or wisconsin, and the district of columbia. the front disc brake rotors can experience severe corrosion if operated for an extensive period in the salt belt. if the rotors are not replaced, the corrosion can eventually compromise the structural integrity of the stamped steel center hub section of the rotor.
Consequence SummaryThe reduced strength can allow the cast iron wear surface to separate from the hub, reducing the brake effectiveness of the vehicle.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace these rotors with rotors that are coated with a corrosion protection.
NotesOwner notification began june 5, 2000. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

I have a 96 grand cherokee ltd 4x4 with 115k miles. since it turned 65k miles i have replaced the brake pads and drums 3 times. i have water leaks in the seat belt wells, the passenger side window, and the belts are wet when it rains. today, water is pooling in the floor of the driver's side. water pours from just above the accelerator. must be from a/c?the rear door hatch has jammed in lock position. the electronic mileage/ fuel readout (on ceiling module) fluctuates wildly and is inaccurate. the catalytic converter went out at 64,975 miles. now have a crack in the exhaust manifold, quoted $1200 by dealer to repair. i have gone through stock 3 radios, tuner problems. massive a/c problems in past. i paid a non dealer to repair it, the repairs held for 30 days and same problem started again. then had dealer repair and it was a recall item so was covered after i'd paid for 2 prev repair jobs at $1100 total. the power steering pump went out at 90k miles. replaced so many other parts, i'd have to refer to the service records for more details. this list is only from memory. total cost over 3 yrs....around $4000! oh, and the rear hatch/door paint is faded and dull, totally different from the rest of the car. all black metal painted parts paint is coming off. has been for couple of years. also the roof rattle really loud at over 50mph. the power outlet came apart still attached to my phone cord one day. finally, the front end has some problem with the axle? and will cost approx $700 to repair. i thought i had a lemon until i talked with 3 other jeep owners, they've had similar problems. do we have any recourse with chrysler over these vehicles...i am considering involving an attny.

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 65 to 70 mph, the vehicle began shaking on the front end with extreme force. the brakes were warped and caused the failure. driving over a bump in the road caused the shaking to be more excessive. a mechanic replaced the front brakes and the failure recurred at 120,000. a firestone mechanic replaced the brakes on two occasions and they failed again at 150,000. the manufacturer stated the vehicle was not included in recalls 00v136000 or 06e022000. the purchase date is unavailable. the current mileage was 150,000 and the failure mileage was 90,000.
Consumer states that brake rotor separated from wheel causing extended stopping. please provide any additional information.

This vehicle has cost us over $3,000 in the first 1 year and half we have owned it. i have never owned a vehicle with this little of mileage and had everything go up. we feel this auto is a total lemon and people should be made aware of the problems of this particular vehicle. we have never towed anything nor had it on anything other surface other than a paved road. i'm not sure what if anything you can do for us, but letting the nhtsa know about this vehicle is some reassurance. what really upsets me is that we bought this vehicle from a supposed reputable dealer. thank you for your time. i'd appreciate any information you can provide me on this particular vehicle as far as any other owner complaints etc. thank you for your time and attention to this matter. no safety defect listed within summary. *ak

I sent a detailed letter to daimler chrysler after being refused by dealer. they only refunded my money for the cost of the front rotors. they would not reimburse me for the labor charges. i can't understand how they can do that when i had them replaced before the recall. that should show there is a problem. i wrote about all my problems with this lemon but i could not claim it was a lemon because i was leasing it at the time and in pa, a vehicle can only be declared a lemon when it is purchased, not leased. very dissatisfied with daimler/chrysler because they simply washed their hands of the entire problem. i have other problems to report, along with the receipts to prove they were investigated but nothing was ever done to correct the problems. please contact me to forward all receipts proving complaints before warranty expired. thank you

I sent a detailed letter to daimler chrysler after being refused by dealer. they only refunded my money for the cost of the front rotors. they would not reimburse me for the labor charges. i can't understand how they can do that when i had them replaced before the recall. that should show there is a problem. i wrote about all my problems with this lemon but i could not claim it was a lemon because i was leasing it at the time and in pa, a vehicle can only be declared a lemon when it is purchased, not leased. very dissatisfied with daimler/chrysler because they simply washed their hands of the entire problem. i have other problems to report, along with the receipts to prove they were investigated but nothing was ever done to correct the problems. please contact me to forward all receipts proving complaints before warranty expired. thank you

When applying brakes under regular braking conditions, no inclement weather, there is a lot of vibration and shaking. the rotors were turned at 30000 miles because they were repeatedly warping. currently, at 40,000 miles the condition is back. 8ak

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC - FOUNDATION COMPONENTS - DRUM

While traveling on slushy roads from snow, vehicle suddenly spun around and consumer states brakes were never applied, vehicle was taken into dealership because consumer stated it flet like the rear brakes were grabbing, but dealer could not duplicate the problem, however consumer experienced the same problem on a separate occasion, consumer then decided to install rear brake pads, consumer discovered that the inner pad on the passenger side had no pad left and the metal had damaged the rotor, it appeared that the caliper was still pushing against the rotor even when the service brakes were off, therefore it may not bring vehicle to a halt but can cause vehicle to spin around when traveling on snow or icy roads.*jb

*ak
