Nhtsa has conducted extensive analysis of the data regarding fuel tank integrity for the model year (my) 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokee (jgc). as a result of that work, the agency has decided to upgrade its safety defect investigation to an engineering analysis and to expand the scope of vehicles included in the investigation. nhtsa's assessment of the data collected during this investigation indicates that rear-impact-related tank failures and vehicle fires are more prevalent in the jgc than in the non-jeep peer vehicles. in addition, the agency's analysis of its fars data for the peer vehicles and three jeep models shows a higher incidence of rear-impact, fatal fire crashes for the jeep products.pe10-031 had focused on the fuel tank system integrity of the jgc vehicles during rear-end collisions and impacts.the fuel tank is located at the rear of the vehicle, between the bumper and axle, and is manufactured from a plastic material (hdpe).three peer vehicles (across the same my range as the jgc) were identified for comparative assessment: the chevrolet blazer, ford explorer, and toyota 4runner.odi has collected and assessed a significant volume of data for the jgc and three peer vehicles under the defect petition (dp) 09-005 and pe10-031, much of which was either provided by the petitioner or by the subject and peer manufacturers in response to odi's information request letters.nhtsa has also utilized its fars database.fatal crash data was collected for the jgc and its three peers, along with data for two other jeep vehicles, the cherokee and liberty, which were also manufactured with rear mounted fuel tanks and assessed by odi as jeep peer vehicles.based on the agency's current analysis, odi is upgrading its investigation to determine whether the subject vehicles contain a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety.the subject vehicles for ea12-005 will be my 1993-2004 jgc, my 1993-2001 cherokee, and my 2002-2007 liberty; the estimated production volumes for these vehicles is approximately 5.1 million, although attrition is a factor for the older vehicles.please note that the counts shown in the above failure report summary are for the jgc only (values shown in the total column are unique).data for the other jeep models and possibly other peer models will be collected during the investigation.the odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers:506249, 549376, 734783, 869217, 10009553, 10335943, 10351589, 10351980, 10357528.

In a letter dated october 2, 2009, the center for auto safety (cas) petitioned nhtsa to open a defect investigation and recall model year 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokees.cas alleged that the subject vehicles have defective fuel tank storage systems that present a fire hazard in crashes. cas alleged that the plastic fuel tank's placement behind the rear axle and below the rear bumper, and the lack of adequate shielding, make it more vulnerable to rupture or leakage from a rear-impact by another vehicle (including damage from other components located on the grand cherokee), or in the case of rollover crashes, from other external objects.cas also alleged that the fuel filler neck tears off in crashes.in its petition, cas cites data from nhtsa's fatality analysis reporting system (fars) showing 172 fatal fire crashes with 254 fatalities involving the subject vehicles from calendar years 1992 through 2008.cas stated that there have been at least 44 crashes with 64 total fatalities (subject and non-subject vehicles) where fire was entered as the most harmful event (mhe) in the fars database.in response to the cas petition, odi made a preliminary examination of available data.fars data showed 2,988 occupants of the subject vehicles have died in crashes since 1992.of those, 55 died in 44 crashes where fire was listed as the most harmful event.identifying crashes most likely associated with the alleged defect as described by cas (defined as the subject vehicle being struck at the 5, 6 or 7 o'clock positions) isolated 10 crashes with 13 occupant fatalities.odi also reviewed the vehicle owner questionnaires (voq) database and identified 12 reports alleging a) a post-crash fuel tank leak and/or b) a post-crash fire potentially related to a fuel tank leak.of the 12 reports, 10 involved fires (two involved fuel leaks only) with 9 alleged injuries and 1 alleged fatality.the existence of these post-crash fires does not, by itself, establish a defect trend.further review and investigation into these incidents is needed to determine the existence of any relationship between the alleged defect and each fire or leak.it should be noted that odi also conducted a preliminary review of the early warning reporting (ewr) data that did not find the subject vehicles to be over-represented for post-crash fires.odi's initial review neither supports nor excludes the possibility that a defect exists in the subject vehicles.however, odi has always taken the position that vehicle fires pose a significant safety risk.accordingly, odi has granted the petition to further investigate the conditions associated with post-crash fires in these vehicles.

I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee that stalls. hot or cold, night or day, idling at a light or going 75mph down the interstate. i have had the fuel pump replaced, the fuel system cleaned, the o2 sendor replaces, the water pump replaced, the crank sensor replaced, the map sensor replaced, and the ignition coil replaced (i do still have the old ignition coil). it's in the shop now, and after doing some online research, i have found hundreds of people having the same problem, most of them being charged an outrageous amount of money by jeep dealers who, ultimately, do not fix the problem. i would not be so concerned, but like many jeep owners, i have small children. the problem started almost a year ago, happens daily, and if it should happen on a busy road or highway when i am going 60+mph, i am concerned about my safety and that of my kids.

I purchased this 1997, jeep grand cherokee from broadway volkswagen on auto row in oakland ca. at the time the odometer read 48,080k. two weeks ago the car stopped running while i was driving it. i had to have it towed to albera bros. jeep/chrysler dealership where i?ve taken the vehicle since i purchased it. i also purchased a warranty, for $1500 at the time that i purchase the vehicle, which was contained in the contract of the automobile installment payments. the warranty was to cover all repair that is cover for 72 months or 100k miles. i contacted the warranty company, warentech, who's headquarters are in texas and was advised that they would have to send someone out to look at the car. someone did come out look at the car and took pictures. after a few days i contacted warentech and was advised that they would have to review the information and would get back to me. after several more days i contacted warentech again. i was advised that they needed me fax them my maintenance records verifying that i had maintained the vehicle. i faxed warentech copies of all recent maintenance records. after two or three more days, i once again contacted warentech and was advised that i needed to send more maintenance records and if i didn't have anymore they would deny coverage for repair to the vehicle. i faxed over a total of 13 more records of maintenance verifying that oil changes as well as other maintenance records. that was two days ago and i?ve not heard anything from warentech since. i have already paid $125 dollars to have the car towed to the dealership and have paid another $140 for a rental car to get to and from work. i am very afraid that warentech is going to refuse to pay for the repairs they've already had almost 2-weeks and nothing has been done. i pay $546 a month car not via payroll deduction and have never missed a payment this for two years and i still owe over$18k for the car. i don't know what to do.

I own a 1997 jeep grand cherokee with a 6 cylinder engine. whenever the gas tank is 1/4 full or below, the engine stalls out completely when i make a left turn. it appears that because the gasoline in the tank is pushed to the right, the fuel intake is either blocked or is unable to access the fuel. it appears to me to be a design defect because i have talked to other owners who have the same problem. this is extremely dangerous. this vehicle (and,i believe, all in its class) have power steering, power brakes, etc. to lose power in the middle of a turn when the vehicle is in motion is to lose control. i have not had an accident. i am terribly afraid that i will. *ak

We have a used 1997 jeep grand cherokee, which we have only owned it for about 5-6 months and we are having problems with the fuel system/pump. we notice a recall on 1997-2004 jeep grand cherokee in jan/feb 2006 on the problem that we are having with the vehicle, but when we contact the chrysler corp. we were told that our particular vehicle wasn't part of the recall. on the page that i receive the info on the recall thru nhtsa.gov, it didn't specify which one, it just states 1997-2004, jeep grand cherokee and jeep wrangler, so we need to make sure that chrysler is not trying to take advantage of the situation and not repair the vehicle. how is it that our vehicle is having the same problem as the ones that is under the recall. i spoke with two representatives at chrysler and i was told that the vehicle that we owned had a fuel pump replaced in 2000 and i'm not sure if that's true, because the recall wasn't until last year. *jb

The problems with the fuel pump and fuel tank sending unit started several months after the vehicle was purchased. the vehicle would stall and/or jerk on the highway as though it was running out of gas. we thought that we must have just purchased some bad gas (water in the gas tank) so we really did not think there was a real problem. also, the distance til empty (dte) digital gauge has always fluctuated up and down with its readings. the problem was especially noted when the vehicle contained 1/4 or less tank of gas. through research, we found that a fuel tank sending unit recall (#755) was issued for 1997 jeep grand cherokee built through june 1, 1997. our vehicle was built july 1997. our vehicle, and probably many more 1997 vehicles, should have been included in the recall. at this point, we have no recourse adsent of a recall on our vin number. *ak

Vehicle experienced total failure at 65 mph. i was told this was due to a corroding fuel tank, caused by additives used by gas manufacturers. apparently the corroding tank pieces/slivers/shards/etc. clog the fuel filter/fuel pump and does not allow fuel to reach the engine. chrysler has since changed the construction of their tank to account for this problem. however, i had to wait in excess of 2 weeks for a tank because of a (quote form the dealer) national backorder on fuel tanks. upon further investigation, i have found this to be a widespread problem (it's what's causing the backorder, as best as i can determine). the warranty company i have extended coverage through (wynns), told me that they are so familiar with it that they have instituted a procedure to deny any claim arising to chrysler tanks since it is a problem stemming from the chrysler design. my real problem arises from the fact that while this issue is so far reaching to cause a national backorder on chrysler tanks, getting chrysler as a corporation to admit the problem is impossible (of course) although the local jeep dealer is aware of it. if it is a known problem, i as a consumer should have received some notice about potentially corrosive tanks, or perhaps there should be a recall on this item. the fuel tank failure causes a complete stoppage of the vehicle, as i learned travelling 65 mph on rte. 81s in pennsylvania with my 7 month pregnant wife and 1.5 year old son in the car. i thankfully was able to get the car to the side of the road, but it was inoperable thereafter. i have since had the tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, and o2 sensor replaced at a cost of $1023. while i would like to see chrysler halp me out with a portion of this since it is the tank design/construction that caused the failure, i ultimately would like to see them alert their customers about the potential of the vehicle shutting down. *ak

The gas guage does not report more fuel as described in the other recall, but the guage pointer suddenly, at any speed, drops to empty and the guage chimes a warning. this happens when parked, when driving, when idling, when you first start the engine and when you've been driving for hours. it happens repeatedly - the pointer will flop from empty to the proper level up to 30 times within 2 minutes (not an exaggeration). sometimes, it does not go back to the proper level - i have filled the tank completely, watched it go to e, then driven 25 miles home with the pointer on e the whole time. my husband has a 1998 jeep gr cherokee and it does the same thing.*ak
