Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles, if a driver has not placed the shifter lever fully into the park position and leaves the vehicle running, the vehicle may unexpectedly move rearward after seeming to be stable.

Corrective SummaryDealers will install a secondary detent system to the floor shifter assembly. daimlerchrysler sent interim notices to owners concerning this problem on march 22, 2002. owner notification began september 23, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

 Tl*the contact owns a 1997 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 45 mph on normal road conditions, the engine stalled intermittently. the vehicle restarted after several attempts and the engine and brake warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the indicators remained lit until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic eight times, but the failure could not be duplicated. recently, the dealer replaced the core wires, spark plugs, hoses, caps, and rotor distributor. the vehicle was also repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 02v053000 (power train:automatic transmission;lever and linkage:floor shift). the failure mileage was 90,000 and current mileage was 103,000.

 1. came out of gear when in park and crashed sustaining 5000.00 dollars in damage. had received a letter from daimler-chrysler in 2002,however it was not dated stating the car could do this. no recalls were present at the time. they denied any problem when car crashed. called an attorney who was a relative that told without a doubt (100%) the car would do this. he then called me back and stated he could not represent me because he represented daimler-chrysler. he was hired by chrysler after he bought a viper from them that was a lemon and he shoved it you know where and won. they realized what an outstanding attorney he was then hired him. talk about family ethics. they finally installed the secondary detent system in 12/2008. i was told it was repaired. 2 the car is stalling at high speeds,during u turns, while at stop signs. it to dangerous to drive. jeep keeps telling me they can not find anything on diagnostics. i was out of town 250 miles from home and they want me to drive an unsafe vehicle back to the. they have been rude,evasive and blaming me. after 500.00 there diagnostics showed nothing. it has been to 5 other mechanics and know one has been able to diagnose the problem. i now have a 1997 grand cherokee limited that is loaded that is dangerous and worth nothing. 3 if they insist on arbitration and a chance to fix it you will lose. it is worth your money to hire a lemon law attorney from the very beginning. *tr

 Took jeep to dealer on jan 22 07 for abs light check. was notified my dealer that there was a recall on my car for secondary detent system recall bo2. dealer serviced detent recall malfunction. when i picked up the car the automatic shift lever would not go down to 1st and 2nd gear, it was being blocked by an internal obstacle under the shift council. took car in next day around 11:30 am and service writer wanted to keep car overnight. set appointment with him to bring it in next day jan 24 07. dealer advised me that my shifting bezel was broken and needed to be replaced for $95.00. i advised dealer that shifter worked fine when i brought it in and that they needed to fix whatever it is that they broke. dealer replied that it was broke before i brought it in and working on the council caused things to shift and thus caused the obstacle. i arrived at the dealer and they said that if i had not brought in my car that it would still be working fine., dealer agreed with me but wants $95.00 to fix it.,.i declined the offer. took car home and removed shifting council to find that red shift marker was no longer centered around the shift lever and a rubber washer was no longer centered around the shifter. pulling the shifter back towards drive caused the shifter to be stuck at drive because the red shift marker bezel would not allow shifter to go any further and thus blocked shifter from going from 1st or 2nd gears. while driving the car in this condition the shifter would pop into neutral when a road bump was hit and thus i would loose power, thus an unsafe driving condition. upon picking my car up on jan 22 07 around 5 pm i was not advised that my shifter was not working properly or that i was driving off in a vehicle that now had an unsafe driving condition. *jb

 I am complaining about the lack of service for my jeep cherokee. there is are a couple of recalls for this vehicle. one is the b02 and the other is the 879. i have made arrangements to have them fixed at the smithtown and bayshore dealerships and each appointment has been cancelled. i cannot take the car to a mechanic because the car rolls out of gear when it is in park (b02 recall). so the work that has to be done hasn't been taken care of because mechanics will not bring the car into the shop. as a matter of fact the one time someone allowed it into the shop it rolled out of gear and almost ran the mechanics over. lets just say we are not on good terms because of this. parts are worn out. but until this roll out of park issue is taken care of no one will see the car. again i made several appointments to see chrysler dealer but they keep canceling my appointments. i want to be paid for the parts that are wearing out and cannot be fixed due to no mechanic will see the car. and i want the dealerships in smithtown and bayshore reported for canceling appointments that were made in advance. *jb

 When you step on the gas it takes 5-10 seconds for the transmission to kick in. then it bucks into gear. when sitting idle, the transmission feels like it will stall. our mechanic told us that the transmission is failing and needed to be replaced. at this time, our grand cherokee is dead. we can not believe this is the second grand cherokee we have owned and the transmission had failed. we got rid of our '95 grand cherokee because the transmission kept hesitating, the dealer could never seem to find anything wrong, of course. we knew this car was a lemon and got the dealer to get us into a brand new grand cherokee (1997). now 5 1/2 years later this car's transmission has failed. jeep needs to step up to the plate and get these cars fixed! *la

 When left in park, with the engine running, this 1997 jeep grand cherokee has on multiple occasions (perhaps six or eight times) slipped out of park and moved both forward and backward on it's own. on several occasions there was no driver in the car when it began moving. in the latest episode, in may of 2001, my wife was knocked to the ground as she attempted to reenter the car which she had left in park. the jeep moved backward until coming to rest on a hedge and a cable tv box on the street next to our home. the damages were about $200. my wife was bruised, but not seriously injured. what should we do? is there a recall? will this be reported to jeep?*ak

 At 07:45am husband parked vehicle, placed drive selector in park', engaged emergency brakes, left engine idling. wife, jo, entered vehicle. as she was engaging safety belt the car suddenly accelerated to a very high rpm and , simultaneously, jumped into reverse gear. the jeep struck a parked sedan and apparently the im[pact switched the gear into forward. wife was unable to control and the jeep struck a house . husband opened door and turned off engine w/ ignition key. engine stopped.. emergency brakes remained engaged throughout. police report confirms not the driver's fault.investigation by insurance adjuster/repair shop ongoing.*ak

 I have been taking my jeep back to the dealer since about 7000 miles with a hesitation problem. they said they checked engine, transmission, and other items with no sucess in locating the problem. now, a few months ago i started having problems with it wanting to just take off like a bullet, as soon as you barly get it into reverse. i explained to crystler, that now ,i wonder if the whole time they couldn't find the problem if it was my transmission. at 55000 miles i understand things start going wrong, but not the transmission. i felt that if it needed repair they should pay for it, or at least waiver the labor. so i took it to a transmission specialist, he replied if you were my wife you wouldn't even drive it any further, it's that bad so now it still sits in the garage gitting fixed ,1 1/2 weeks as of today ,and i still don't have it back. the specilist told me the whole transmission would need rebuilt, due to burnt out clutches in 1 st gear, and reverse, and burnt out tourque converter. with a grand total of $2326.70. then i saw the issue on cnn about the jeep grand cherokee, and i really felt that applied to our jeep. please help. the dealership kept telling me alot of crazy things, like you must not be excellerating properly and with the reverse, everyone has to keep there foot on the break when putting it in reverse well i never had a vehicle that would just shoot off like a rocket in reverse. thank you lise greathouse. *ak

 I was driving my vehicle home from my son's school...there were no passengers in the car. i pulled into my flat driveway and stopped at the end of it to retrieve my mail from my mailbox. after the vehicle was completely stopped, i put the transmission into park; released my foot from the brake pedal; took off my seatbelt; opened the door; and got out. everything seemed normal at this point. however, after taking about five steps away from the vehicle towards my mailbox, the vehicle slipped out of park into reverse and started driving backwards....all by itself. afraid that the vehicle would run into another car, or a house, or worse, my instinct told me to try and stop it. i ran towards the front of the vehicle as it was moving backward and tried to get in (in order to put the brake on). in my effort to do so, however, the door of the moving vehicle knocked me down onto the street and completely ran over my left leg, breaking my femur bone in two places. as i was unable to move, screaming in severe pain, the vehicle continued backing up on its own onto my front lawn, through a ditch, over a cable t.v. box, through an empty field, finally stopping when it tried to go across a rather deep ditch. the motor, however, continued to run.

 When driving at any speed vehicle wouldn't shift properly from first to second gear, and was shifting very hard. lock on the driver's side door isn't locking properly. also, water pump was replaced/ driver's side window motor went out, and there was a leakage in the sun roof which caused water to leak into vehicle on driver's side.

 Problem seemed to be with the shift linkage to the transmission. keys would also not come out of the car because i could not get it in park. after putting significant pressure on the shifter, vehicle did go into park and then was ok. i did call a local dealer who seemed to be familiar with the problem and recommended the heavy pressure fix.*ak

 The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer to have recall 02v-053 performed for the shifter lever, after the installation was completed, the consumer noticed the shifter was stiff but left the dealer anyway. the consumer stated that she couldn't drive the vehicle like this. the consumer called jeep eagle and was told that maybe it needed further adjustment. the consumer had gone back to the service department who had performed the recall, and was told that everything was correct. the consumer was given the option to remove the recall and return the vehicle to its original condition. (the consumer couldn't imagine using two hands to shift, so she opted for the change) the consumer picked up the vehicle later and then noticed that it is now loose compared to its original condition. the consumer(s) were told that what they perceived as loose was completely functional and okay to drive. the consumer(s) have had a number of concerns with the stiff shifting related to the recall. *scc *jb

 The vehicle was parked in front of an office building, engine running and gear shift in park. the driver got out to drop off an envelope at the office and as she entered the building the transmission shifted from park to reverse. the vehicle rolled, under power, backward into two other vehicles damaging all three vehicles. the parking brake had not been applied because the driver expected the park position of the shifter to be adequate to keep the car from moving. daimler/chrysler was contacted and they had an investigator look at the vehicle. he concluded that the parking pawl, transmission linkage and all associated parts are operating properly. their decision was, that because the recommendations in the vehicle manual weren't followed, they had no obligation in the matter. the driveway where the vehicle was parked had enough slope that the vehicle would have rolled freely if it had not been placed in park. although there is evidence that similar incidents have occurred, ( i.e. consumer complaints in the nhtsa database) daimler/chrysler has not notified us that thiscould be a possible problem. *ak

 I first reported this back in october 1997. i had left my jeep grand cherokee in park with the engine running in front of a convenience store. i went inside for approximately 1 minute and upon exiting saw my jeep moving in reverse out of the parking lot headed for a 4 lane highway. i ran after my car to stop it and upon opening the driver's side door was hit by it and thrown head first into the pavement. the car then crossed 2 lanes of traffic and hit a vehicle stopped at a stop light. damage was done to both vehicles. i had a large hemotoma on my head and extensive neck bruising and a herniated disc in my neck. jeep was contacted and they sent an engineer to look at the car but couldn't find anything wrong with it. allstate sent an engineer as well. this was a leased vehicle and is probably being driven by someone else as i type this. i find it amusing that 4 years later - this is all coming out when i was probably one of the first to have this happen to them.*ak

 I was at a chevron gas station about to pump gas. my grand jeep cherokee was parked on a flat surface and in the park position. my sister was confined by her seat belt in the front passenger seat when i got out and walked around the driver's side to begin pumping gas, leaving the driver's side door open. as i was about to pull the gas lever the car started rolling backwards towards me at what appeared to be quite a rapid speed especially given that i had left it in park. miraculously, the car was stopped from hitting oncoming traffic on westwood blvd. by the open driver's door which almost pulled off upon impact with one of the gas pumps and probably averted a really horrendous collision. i have spent time researching this particular incident and have concluded that there is a very serious defect in the transmission interlock systems of grand jeep cherokees. i have found many other grand jeep cherokees reporting that same, or similar, incidents some of which have resulted in deaths. i have written numerous letters to daimler/chrylser setting forth the particulars of the accident in which i was involved, but they have turned a deaf ear. i am personally so terrified of getting back in my car that i chose to lease another car (while broke and unemployed and paying the lease om the grand jeep cheroke), rather than risk life and limb by driving that car again -- something i refuse to do. i ask you please to take this matter very seriously and do a thorough investigation into serious defect that i believe exists in chysler's jeep cherokee's transmission interlock system*ak

 The front ring and pinion gears/bearings in front differential have been replaced thrice. the axle assembly has been replaced twice and an updated yoke and drive shaft also was installed. the latest failure occurred approximately 1200 miles after a new axle assembly was installed on june 20, 2000 in west bend, wisconsin. i was returning from wisconsin to californai when latest failure occurred. the current failure is similar to the previous 6 - excessive gear/bearing noise. i've contacted chrysler customer care and a file has been established. i've contacted my current local dealer (peoples chrysler) and requested a meeting with the district manager re: this issue of continuing front differential failures. i have not been contacted by district manager and i fear that i'm being stonewalled.

 Vehicle is all wheel drive full time. has low mileage and been regularly maintained by authorized dealers. at 65,000 miles the car began emitting high pitched sounds originally thought to be from new tires(4 put on car). it was later determined after several thousands miles that at a minimum the bearings in the front differential were bad and at least one authorized dealer has claimed that they the rear are bad as well. both differentials simultaneously. obvious concern for several reasons: 1)the car is all wheel drive full time. extensive damage to the differentials at high speed or while towing as a result of bearings and gears being damaged. 2) all dealers claim this is a regularly occuring problem in the jeep cherokee of that year as well as others 3)it has been suggested that the problems will occur in the same timeframes throughout the life of the car in spite of regular authorized and scheduled maintenance as has occured on this vehicle since it was purchased. in lieu of safety concerns is also the suggestion that it will cost 5-10% of the car's purchase price every 65,000 miles to repair this same problem. *ak

 Engine speed continues after gas pedal is released at speeds between 35 and 60mph. speed continues unless driver shifts to neutral. engine speed increases to 2500rpm while in neutral and remains at 2500rpm until car is braked to less than 20mph. this failure to decelerate occurs every time the vehicle is operated over 35mph. the brake repair and differential replacement occurred before taking delivery of the used vehicle. maybe the brake and differential failure are related to the failure to delerate without the use of the braking system. naperville jeep and koller dodge both recognized the issue and replaced the throttle motor and throttle body but the failure to decelerate continues. chrysler's star hotline says this failure to decelerate is normal. i have test driven other 1997 5.2l jeeps with trailer packages and those vehicles decelerated normally, in a manner similar to all of my other 45 years of driving experiences. the jeep dealer claimed that mass produced vehicles normally have this variablility in behavior. they even suggested the deceleration problem was my fault because i bought the car.
