Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.
NotesThis recall only pertains to aftermarket napa, raybestos, ac delco, aimco, carquest, and bendix brake hydraulic master cylinders and has no relation to any original equipment installed on daimlerchrysler or ford vehicles.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger and multi-purpose vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the states of connecticut, illinois, indiana, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, or wisconsin, and the district of columbia. the front disc brake rotors can experience severe corrosion if operated for an extensive period in the salt belt. if the rotors are not replaced, the corrosion can eventually compromise the structural integrity of the stamped steel center hub section of the rotor.
Consequence SummaryThe reduced strength can allow the cast iron wear surface to separate from the hub, reducing the brake effectiveness of the vehicle.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace these rotors with rotors that are coated with a corrosion protection.
NotesOwner notification began june 5, 2000. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

I purchased a certified pre-owned 1997 jeep grand cherokee from lansdale chrysler jeep in october of 2002. within 1 week, the abs light came on and i took it back to the dealer. they explained to me that the abs unit had failed and would have to be replaced at a cost of over $1,000 dollars. i submitted a hand written complaint to them that the car was certified and nothing should fail within a week. the abs was replaced without charge to me. three years later the abs unit has failed again! estimate charge for repair is $1,200 dollars. my research on the internet shows this to be a common problem from 1993-1998 grand cherokee's. the following website: autos.msn.com cites this as a common problem for the abs unit to fail. the dealer told me the abs unit was out of warranty. how does a $1,000 part fail twice?!? *jb

The vehicle was experiencing sudden throttling when traveling at about 35 mph. consumer was informed that this was dangerous by a mechanic, but the cause was undetermined.*ak when turning the air conditioner or heater it makes the engine throttle up and stay at accelerated speed. when the consumer takes his foot of the gas pedal the vehicle slows down until you turn on the heat or air. the consumer stated that when you start from a stopped position with the fan on, after you attained the speed you want and take your foot off the acceleratorthe speed and rpm will stay the same and will not slow down until the brakes are applied. the consumer stated that he had to turn the fan off at a complete stop in neutral to get the vehicle to function properly. under heavy braking the brakes had a bad pulsation which caused the abs light to come on. radio and speakers needed to be replaced. *tc

The abs light began coming on several months ago. the light always went out and we contacted the dealer and asked them to look at it since it continued to go on. the dealer said it was the abs pump, which cost us $1500. i don't feel it is appropriate for the abs system to go out at less than 50000 miles. after reading the problems that other people have had with this i think it should be looked into since it is a major safety factor that does affect the brakes. the dealer told us the regular brakes should work it the abs fails. this is not the case as several other people have attested. chrysler was contacted and they refuse to take any fault for the defective parts. we picked up the car and of course the abs light is again going on. now they say that they have to change the abs module for another $700. this is ridiculous. please look into this as i feel chrysler has been negligent in what is obviously a mechanical flaw in their vehicles that they should address with a recall. i have lost all confidence in jeep and this is my 5th one!!!*ak

Took jeep to dealer on jan 22 07 for abs light check. was notified my dealer that there was a recall on my car for secondary detent system recall bo2. dealer serviced detent recall malfunction. when i picked up the car the automatic shift lever would not go down to 1st and 2nd gear, it was being blocked by an internal obstacle under the shift council. took car in next day around 11:30 am and service writer wanted to keep car overnight. set appointment with him to bring it in next day jan 24 07. dealer advised me that my shifting bezel was broken and needed to be replaced for $95.00. i advised dealer that shifter worked fine when i brought it in and that they needed to fix whatever it is that they broke. dealer replied that it was broke before i brought it in and working on the council caused things to shift and thus caused the obstacle. i arrived at the dealer and they said that if i had not brought in my car that it would still be working fine., dealer agreed with me but wants $95.00 to fix it.,.i declined the offer. took car home and removed shifting council to find that red shift marker was no longer centered around the shift lever and a rubber washer was no longer centered around the shifter. pulling the shifter back towards drive caused the shifter to be stuck at drive because the red shift marker bezel would not allow shifter to go any further and thus blocked shifter from going from 1st or 2nd gears. while driving the car in this condition the shifter would pop into neutral when a road bump was hit and thus i would loose power, thus an unsafe driving condition. upon picking my car up on jan 22 07 around 5 pm i was not advised that my shifter was not working properly or that i was driving off in a vehicle that now had an unsafe driving condition. *jb

I had to have the brakes and rotors replaced before 12,000 miles, under warranty. the rotors flat spotted again at 16,635 miles, so the dealer suggested to have them turned, both front and rear @ $225.16. they also told me that this is a very common thing to have done. i had to return to the dealer to have new brakes and rotors for the front and rear again on 3/22/01 with only 24366 miles, which was a cost of $662.17 to me. they again said that this is a very common thing to have to do. i also called the customer service at chrysler and the district rep. would not give me any assistance for the cost of the repairs. so i requested that my complaint be filed with the regional customer relations mgr. which was on 3/22/01 and i still have not received a reply. i recently read a report concerning chronic problem vehicles in which chrysler had to buy back. unless i am very stupid having to have my brakes and rotors replaced every 6,000 to 8,000 miles falls into the chronic problem list. i paid $30,000.00 for a vehicle which i thought would last me for at least 10 -15 years. apparently they do not make vehicles to last that long any more. i have not been notified of a recall and when i talked with customer service at chrysler i was told that there had not been a recall on my vehicle. i do not feel safe driving it any more. i espically will not allow any passengers. i am also afraid of having total brake failure and have a serious accident. i hope that i can get something done about this problem which i feel can have serious damages if i have total brake failure which i've been told can happen.*ak
