| Odi opened ea02-029 to determine whether a safety-related defect trend existed in the my 1997 jeep grand cherokee hood latch assemblies.during ea02-029, there was no specific failure mechanism identified that could differentiate the my 1997 vehicles from other vehicles containing this same hood latch assembly or could account for their higher complaint rate.as a result, odi expanded the scope of this investigation to include all grand cherokee vehicles equipped with the subject hood latch assemblies.in performing ea02-029, it was determined that some of the secondary hood latches in the subject vehicles may exhibit increased operating frictional resistance; however, since none of the primary hood latches showed any evidence of mechanical or operational deficiency and the complaint rate of hood fly-ups measured over an extended exposure time was low, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time. | ||||||

| I purchased this 1997, jeep grand cherokee from broadway volkswagen on auto row in oakland ca. at the time the odometer read 48,080k. two weeks ago the car stopped running while i was driving it. i had to have it towed to albera bros. jeep/chrysler dealership where i?ve taken the vehicle since i purchased it. i also purchased a warranty, for $1500 at the time that i purchase the vehicle, which was contained in the contract of the automobile installment payments. the warranty was to cover all repair that is cover for 72 months or 100k miles. i contacted the warranty company, warentech, who's headquarters are in texas and was advised that they would have to send someone out to look at the car. someone did come out look at the car and took pictures. after a few days i contacted warentech and was advised that they would have to review the information and would get back to me. after several more days i contacted warentech again. i was advised that they needed me fax them my maintenance records verifying that i had maintained the vehicle. i faxed warentech copies of all recent maintenance records. after two or three more days, i once again contacted warentech and was advised that i needed to send more maintenance records and if i didn't have anymore they would deny coverage for repair to the vehicle. i faxed over a total of 13 more records of maintenance verifying that oil changes as well as other maintenance records. that was two days ago and i?ve not heard anything from warentech since. i have already paid $125 dollars to have the car towed to the dealership and have paid another $140 for a rental car to get to and from work. i am very afraid that warentech is going to refuse to pay for the repairs they've already had almost 2-weeks and nothing has been done. i pay $546 a month car not via payroll deduction and have never missed a payment this for two years and i still owe over$18k for the car. i don't know what to do. | |||

| I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee and the paint is just popping off the top as well as some spots on the hood. also the bumpers and other trim on the vehicle has this white chalky residue on it and nothing will make it go away. is there any recalls for this type damage or will you file this complaint so there will be a recall. i also had to have the ac evaporator replaced at my expense. where do i go to get my reimbursement since i now know this was a recall? *ak | |||

| Dt: the contact stated that twice the driver's door had to be put back on. it had a defect in the body frame. the first time was in 4-04, the second time it was in 4-05. currently, abs brake system malfunctioned. a month ago, all of the pads on front and rear were replaced. three days ago, the abs light came on and would not go off. the contact took vehicle a service dealer, and they told him the control unit module and the hydraulic pump motor needed to be replaced at a cost of $2,300.00. *ak | |||

| When driving at any speed vehicle wouldn't shift properly from first to second gear, and was shifting very hard. lock on the driver's side door isn't locking properly. also, water pump was replaced/ driver's side window motor went out, and there was a leakage in the sun roof which caused water to leak into vehicle on driver's side. | |||

| I read in the paper you were investigating hoods opening on 1997 jeep grand cherokees. my jeep hood came open while i was driving down i-65 in alabama approximately at the date listed in the questionaire. that date is an estimate. i was driving at about 65 mph when the hood popped up, partially obscuring my vision. i was near an exit, so i managed to safely get off the road and stop and re-latch the hood. at the time i thought i must have not closed it properly after checking the oil, but now that i know there is an investigation underway i thought it was wise to report this incident anyway. i can not confirm or deny that i improperly closed the hood before this incident i just don't remember. dt | |||
