Nhtsa has conducted extensive analysis of the data regarding fuel tank integrity for the model year (my) 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokee (jgc). as a result of that work, the agency has decided to upgrade its safety defect investigation to an engineering analysis and to expand the scope of vehicles included in the investigation. nhtsa's assessment of the data collected during this investigation indicates that rear-impact-related tank failures and vehicle fires are more prevalent in the jgc than in the non-jeep peer vehicles. in addition, the agency's analysis of its fars data for the peer vehicles and three jeep models shows a higher incidence of rear-impact, fatal fire crashes for the jeep products.pe10-031 had focused on the fuel tank system integrity of the jgc vehicles during rear-end collisions and impacts.the fuel tank is located at the rear of the vehicle, between the bumper and axle, and is manufactured from a plastic material (hdpe).three peer vehicles (across the same my range as the jgc) were identified for comparative assessment: the chevrolet blazer, ford explorer, and toyota 4runner.odi has collected and assessed a significant volume of data for the jgc and three peer vehicles under the defect petition (dp) 09-005 and pe10-031, much of which was either provided by the petitioner or by the subject and peer manufacturers in response to odi's information request letters.nhtsa has also utilized its fars database.fatal crash data was collected for the jgc and its three peers, along with data for two other jeep vehicles, the cherokee and liberty, which were also manufactured with rear mounted fuel tanks and assessed by odi as jeep peer vehicles.based on the agency's current analysis, odi is upgrading its investigation to determine whether the subject vehicles contain a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety.the subject vehicles for ea12-005 will be my 1993-2004 jgc, my 1993-2001 cherokee, and my 2002-2007 liberty; the estimated production volumes for these vehicles is approximately 5.1 million, although attrition is a factor for the older vehicles.please note that the counts shown in the above failure report summary are for the jgc only (values shown in the total column are unique).data for the other jeep models and possibly other peer models will be collected during the investigation.the odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers:506249, 549376, 734783, 869217, 10009553, 10335943, 10351589, 10351980, 10357528.

In a letter dated october 2, 2009, the center for auto safety (cas) petitioned nhtsa to open a defect investigation and recall model year 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokees.cas alleged that the subject vehicles have defective fuel tank storage systems that present a fire hazard in crashes. cas alleged that the plastic fuel tank's placement behind the rear axle and below the rear bumper, and the lack of adequate shielding, make it more vulnerable to rupture or leakage from a rear-impact by another vehicle (including damage from other components located on the grand cherokee), or in the case of rollover crashes, from other external objects.cas also alleged that the fuel filler neck tears off in crashes.in its petition, cas cites data from nhtsa's fatality analysis reporting system (fars) showing 172 fatal fire crashes with 254 fatalities involving the subject vehicles from calendar years 1992 through 2008.cas stated that there have been at least 44 crashes with 64 total fatalities (subject and non-subject vehicles) where fire was entered as the most harmful event (mhe) in the fars database.in response to the cas petition, odi conducted a preliminary examination of available data.fars data showed 2,988 occupants of the subject vehicles have died in crashes since 1992.of those, 55 died in 44 crashes where fire was listed as the most harmful event.identifying crashes most likely associated with the alleged defect as described by cas (defined as the subject vehicle being struck at the 5, 6 or 7 o'clock positions) isolated 10 crashes with 13 occupant fatalities.odi also reviewed the vehicle owner questionnaires (voq) database and identified 12 reports alleging a) a post-crash fuel tank leak and/or b) a post-crash fire potentially related to a fuel tank leak.of the 12 reports, 10 involved fires ( two involved fuel leaks only) with 9 alleged injuries and 1 alleged fatality.the existence of these post-crash fires does not, by itself, establish a defect trend. further review and investigation into these incidents is needed to determine the existence of any relationship between the alleged defect and each fire or leak.it should be noted that odi also conducted a preliminary review of the early warning reporting (ewr) data that did not find the subject vehicles to be over-represented for post-crash fires.odi has granted the petition to further investigate the conditions associated with post-crash fires in these vehicles.

I own a 1998 jeep grand cherokee. i just read about an investigation regarding a possible safely issue with the gas tank on these cars in the event of a rear end collision. this might be a factor and if not should be addressed. there is a heat shield that is about a square foot in size mounted in front of the fuel tank that is bolted to the floor board of the car. it is held on with two steel screws with washers. since steel and alumininum will react when place together the holes through the aluminum become oversized and the shields drop off. it is there for a reason and thusly should be replaced. jeep no longer has a replacement part because i guess the problem is so prevalent that they have run out of stock and elect not to make more of them. there has to be very large number of these cars still on the road missing this shield. jeep should be forced to make more of them so the problem can be fixed. it should be redesigned as well so it will not be prone to falling off in the future.

While making a left hand turn in heavy traffic jeep stalled almost causing accident. this happened at 38,000 miles and continues at 100540 miles, if less than half a tank of fuel it will stall and also the dash cluster will read incorrectly. this failure could cause someone to be injured or death as it happens at ransom. user reports that keeping fuel tank full cuts down on the shutoffs to one or two a year. *tr

Fuel sending unit failed. as a result: the check engine light will not go off, therefore i can not pass emissions test in my state. i am also constantly running out of gas. the sending unit is necessary for correct gauge readings. this has happened at the worst time for me as a single mother suffering from job losses in the state of goergia. the estimates to repair the fuel system has averaged 700.00 dollars i am also filing a complaint about the transmission that slips too. the transmission will not go into 2nd or 3rd gear with out a lot of extra effort. there are times i have to take back roads and access roads just because i was nearly hit several times trying to access the express way. suv's are horrendous in gas mileage but a suv with a slipping transmission is burning even more gas! i am still trying to pay for the car and can not afford the repairs. i wish i would have bought an import. i have met quite a few jeep owners who have experienced the same problems.*jb

My 1998 jeep grand cherokee ran out of gas although the gauge clearly showed nearly a half tank of fuel. the car stalled going approx. 40mph but i was able to wrestle it safely off the road. after many hours the police came and ordered a flat bed tow truck. i towed the vehicle to the nearest chrysler dealership which was fullerton ford/jeep in bridgewater n.j. on rt 22. what troubled me so much was not that a part was bad but that the service mgr. knew what the problem was without taking the car off the flat-bed or looking at it! he told me to have the tow-truck driver to tow it to the gas station and it would start , for me to make an appointment and they would replace the fuel sending unit. which they did. ( the car did start when i put gas in it ) chrysler claims that their is no recall on my year and that the technician is just very good at what he does. no one can tell what causes a moving car to stall and not re-start from 100 ft away unless there is a problem specific to that vehicle. i understand the '97 did have a recall. did they ever stop using the same part or did they use up what they had left? and then change. chrysler won't even pay my towing charge for which i am suing.please check into this. they are arrogant and rude at chrysler and this is a potentially deadly problem. they know this is wrong and are doing nothing. thank you for your anticipated help. *ak

On three separate occasions the fuel gauge read that there was 1/4 tank gas left, yet the vehicle sputtered to a stop because it was completely out of gas. the last time this happened, i was on a major interstate, 5 miles from the next gas station. the warning signal on the dash was never activated and i was given no reason to believe that i was running dangerously low on fuel. as well, the trip computer read that i had at least 80 miles to go before i would be out of fuel. i contacted my local jeep dealership(galloway motors) to inquire if there were any recalls regarding fuel gauge failures, but was told that there were none and i would be expected to pay for any repairs. *ak

Approx. 6 months ago, gasoline leaked from tank to garage floor. fumes entered home. we were awake and quickly moved vehicle and ventilated home, before fumes reached burning fireplace. dealer replaced a plug and promised it would never happen again. 7/2/2000 gasoline leaked in garage while family was sleeping. fumes contaminated entire home. wife taken to hospital for exposure. dealer now states the plastic tank misformed but will not advise why. service manager, steve, states he has seen this happen before, but refused to install a metal tank. we have advised that we do not want the truck back and fear for our family's safety. vehicle is currently at dealer. in 1998, this vehicle shut down in the middle of a highway due to the same problem other consumers mentioned on your complaint page. the dealer is also performing the brake recall work. i feel this plastic gas tank is extremely dangerous, since it misformed and leaked on it's own. if the dealer makes us bring the truck back home and finish the lease, we are afraid to operate the vehicle or put it in our garage. please help.

1998 jeep grand cherokee, 2wd, 4.0 liter inline 6, automatic transmission. user has replaced many engine electrical and ignition parts, as well as fuel pump assembly, some relays, and the jeep continues to stall in traffic, when turning corners, when backing up, has intermittent stalling when driving, and is posting various computer codes. i have already spent $700 on diagnostic and parts replacement, yet the problem persists. when driving the engine periodically cuts out and rpm's drop to zero. if this happens in heavy traffic or during an evasive maneuver someone could be killed. this is an ongoing and dangerous problem that my mechanic can not fix, and based on my research on the internet it is a widespread and perplexing design-related problem with this era jeep cherokees and grands. *tr

I purchased this vehicle with a 3 month/3000 mile warranty and since the purchase i am having problems with the gas gauge. for some reason the gauge will instantly drop to empty and then back to the correct level. i've had it to the dealership where i bought it 3 times and they can't find a problem because the gauge is reading normally. now that the vehicle is out of warranty i am stuck with the burden of a faulty fuel gauge and am wondering how to resolve this problem seeing that the dealership couldn't repair the problem. i also am concerned because i think this problem should of been resolved while it was under warranty. i,m sure as soon as i open my wallet at the dealership the problem will be resolved. i also know that previous year jeeps had this problem. *ak

I was driving north on rt. 684 with my gas gauge reading was 1/4 full. vehicle stalled in the third lane of the highway. i managed to pull over and avoid oncoming traffic. one hour later, a state trooper picked me up and drove me to a service station. he told me that my vehicle may have a faulty gas guage as he has picked up other drivers of jeep grand cherokees that have had the same thing happen to them. he said he thought that certain years of the vehicle had been recalled. he turned out to be right. once the vehicle was refueled, i had no problems starting up and driving home. the next week i took the jeep into pamby motors in ridgefield ct and they replaced under warranty the defective part. i was fortunate that the incident occurred when i was alone and not with my family or at a time when the traffic volume would have made it more difficult to avoid traffic. i would like to hear back from chrysler and the nhtsa about this problem, whether it is widespread and what chrysler intends to do about it. *ak

 1. fuel injector failed causing the engine to misfire and operate on only 5 out of 6 cylinders. 2. in the same cylinder (#6) rod broke, causing engine to blow and need replacement at only 42,000 miles. 3. power steering pump almost fell off the vehicle. (most likely due to improper installation after engine rebuild). 4. brakes constantly squeak or make grinding noise when pressure is applied. when temperatures are below 50 degrees, a high pitched whinning noise is heard from underneath the vehicle. can only be heard when traveling under 45 mph - due to road noise masking the sound. (multiple dealers have not been able to determine what the problem is nor be able to fix it, so constantly whines). 5. fuel gauge fluctuates when 3/4 full (drops to empty and fuel light turns on, then returns to normal reading. will continue to do this until tank is 1/4 full). told this is a problem with the fuel sensor. 6. transmission is occasionally rough (jerky shifting between 1st and 2nd gears).*jb

The fuel level sending unit in this 1998 jeep grand cherokee loredo is extremely unreliable and un-safe. there was a recall on this issue in the prior model year for this vehicle. if one was to contact jeep dealerships for replacement parts for the level sending unit , you in turn will receive the identical parts that were installed in the recalled 1997 model year. this would mean the 1997 card body, card body wiper, float arm retainer and the float arm assembly part numbers were reinstalled in the 1998 fuel moduals. revision levels on these engineered parts are doughtfull. the problem with this vehicle is you can fill the tank in full position (23 gal -two clicks) start it up and it may read empty , it may read half full or it may read full at any given moment. occasionaly when you shut the rear hatch door on this vehicle the vibration may case the fuel level unit to react inside the tank/module in a abnormal manner. i believe this is an unsafe and has caused this owner to run out of gas once on highway i95 in ny and once on a back road. chrysler customer support has been contacted and documented the issue on this vehicle but to no avail. please respond, thank you, ken dubrava. *ak
