Odi opened ea02-029 to determine whether a safety-related defect trend existed in the my 1997 jeep grand cherokee hood latch assemblies.during ea02-029, there was no specific failure mechanism identified that could differentiate the my 1997 vehicles from other vehicles containing this same hood latch assembly or could account for their higher complaint rate.as a result, odi expanded the scope of this investigation to include all grand cherokee vehicles equipped with the subject hood latch assemblies.in performing ea02-029, it was determined that some of the secondary hood latches in the subject vehicles may exhibit increased operating frictional resistance; however, since none of the primary hood latches showed any evidence of mechanical or operational deficiency and the complaint rate of hood fly-ups measured over an extended exposure time was low, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time.

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 jeep grand cherokee. when the contact attempted to open the door, the front driver's side door handle fell off of the vehicle. the failure prevented him from exiting the vehicle from the passenger compartment. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the entire door panel at the cost of over $160. secondly, the technician stated that the component failed because it was made out of pot metal. the vin and mileages were unknown.

The consumer experienced a hood latch problem. *yh driving down hwy 64 at 65 mph when hood flew open. driver was able to pull vehicle to side of road. diamlerchrysler investigator came out and said latches had corroded due to owner lack of maintenence. maintenence manual has a small note in the middle of the manual regarding lubrication of the latches, but this task is not part of scheduled maintenence tasks nor does manual describe what to use to lubricate latches. also owner purchased vehicle used in january 2001. previous owner was in nj or md. entire hood and primary and secondary latches had to be replaced. front fender had minor damage. cat 10/28/03
