| Vehicle entirely stalls without warning at idle or very low speeds. jerks and flashes check engine light for one second occasionally while driving at normal road speeds. happens multiple times a day under no specific conditions (cold, hot, wet, dry, etc.) intermittent problem so codes cannot be detected. first occurrence was in heavy mid day city traffic in the middle of a turn. could not be restarted from park for 10 minutes, blocked entire intersection and entrance to plaza. was almost hit by oncoming vehicles multiple times. has the potential to be extremely dangerous if this happens in traffic as it has before. bought used. appears to have had pcm, air filter, plugs and wires replaced. stalling issue is obviously extremely prevalent amongst this vehicle and must be addressed by the responsible companies before someone is killed, likely before more people are killed. | |||

| While driving the 1998 jeep grand cherokee laredo, the vehicle's drive train seems to be binding. while attempting to turn, the vehicle practically comes to a halt. taken to chrysler dealer numerous times, 1st time entire rear differential, axles and all were replaced (no charge-they claim there was a recall? i never found this recall) vehicle was fine for a few months afterwards but then has acted similarly ever since, dealer claims they don't have time to look at my vehicle. while in a parking lot w/vehicle 's engine running, i decided to shift transfer case from hi to lo (all time 4wd) and noticed that the shifter does not indicate hi but does indicate lo. found it hard to find neutral too, then lights indicated lo when shifter was still allegedly in hi? not sure but believe it may be a linkage adjustment issue. it may not be completely locked in position. also noticed that when the engine was shut off, the vehicle moved slightly, sort of like trying to find a gear. same problem as it's been for the previous 6 yrs! *nm | |||

| I own a 1998 jeep grand cherokee laredo. it was in park when it suddenly went into reverse on its own. it knocked myself over and dragged me with my hand slammed in the door. it finally came to a stop when it hit a traffic signal causing massive damage to the vehicle. i found out after the crash that there was a recall that i was never informed of for the faulty shifter. i also learned that there have been many incidents like mine. i called the dealership where i purchased it and they said that they couldn't do anything and that i should call daimler-chrysler. i called daimler and they refused to get me a rent-a-car and only said that a person would be out to look at my vehicle. i want my medical bills paid and my jeep fixed. i don't believe that is too much to ask. help me get some justice and stop these incidents before more people are injured and killed. *jb | |||

| Heard a noise coming from the rear of the car took it into the shop and was told that it was the rear differential, and i was also informed that my transmission was slipping in 1st & 2nd gear. i had the differential repaired and the transmission serviced. we got snow this year where you would need the 4 wheel drive, well being i never had the need to use the 4 wheel drive mode i was surprised to find out that mine didn't work. took it into the shop and was told that the transfer casing and transmission need to be replaced. so i took it to the dealer i bought the jeep from. i let them repair my transfer casing and was told because i didn't have the exact same tires on the vehicle that is what caused the transfer casing to fail. the tires were the same size on the front and rear just different brands. they told me that i didn't have a problem with the transmission. i then picked the jeep up and the roaring sound came back so i took it to the dealer to see what they thought the noise was i was told at that time that my front differential was bad and needed to be repaired and that the rear differential was also bad, but being i had that work done at a independent shop i had to take it back to them to fix the rear and then took the jeep back to the dealer to have them do the work on the front. i am in the process of taking the jeep back to the dealership because my jeep is now pulling to the right. i was able to drive my jeep for a week. i really have not had my jeep since january i really think that daimler chrysler knows there is a problem with the 1998 jeep grand cherokee and i hope that something will be done about. *jb | |||

| 1. fuel injector failed causing the engine to misfire and operate on only 5 out of 6 cylinders. 2. in the same cylinder (#6) rod broke, causing engine to blow and need replacement at only 42,000 miles. 3. power steering pump almost fell off the vehicle. (most likely due to improper installation after engine rebuild). 4. brakes constantly squeak or make grinding noise when pressure is applied. when temperatures are below 50 degrees, a high pitched whinning noise is heard from underneath the vehicle. can only be heard when traveling under 45 mph - due to road noise masking the sound. (multiple dealers have not been able to determine what the problem is nor be able to fix it, so constantly whines). 5. fuel gauge fluctuates when 3/4 full (drops to empty and fuel light turns on, then returns to normal reading. will continue to do this until tank is 1/4 full). told this is a problem with the fuel sensor. 6. transmission is occasionally rough (jerky shifting between 1st and 2nd gears).*jb | |||

| 1998 jeep grand cherokee - placed into park vehicle was still running, driver exited the vehicle, cleared the door, walked 10-15 feet away, vehicle put itself into reverse and took off across populated parking lot with 3 year old infant strapped into safety carseat. the driver ran to catch up to the jeep to stop it from killing someone, (or daughter). the driver grabbed the inside of the opened jeep door with left hand, and steering wheel with right hand to gain entry and stop the vehicle. the driver lost her balance and fell back out. the driver was crushed when the front left wheel proceeded over her right foot, ankle, up her leg, knee, thigh, pelvis, abdomen, chest, and off her right shoulder (missing her neck and head by inches). the jeep proceeded (with daughter) to slam into a handicapped sign and parked dodge intrepid. the ambulance rushed the driver to the hospital and treated her for multiple injuries. there are tread marks on the driver's clothing showing the exact path that the 4000 lb. jeep took as it proceeded over her body. the infant was examined and found to be all right (only because of being in a safety carseat). chrysler has a responsibility to inform the public of this manufacturers' defect! we will not stop until chrysler does the right thing. all manufacturers have a responsibility to provide safe products and recall defects that could potentially injure the general public! on this site, there are more than 200+ instances of the same type for 1998 jeep grand cherokees alone. the l.a. times has an article (published on 12/23/01, page a35) that explains an ongoing investigation and class-action lawsuit in progress. we (as consumers) need to back one another up as chrysler does not have our best interest at heart!! if this has happened to you or one of your loved ones, please feel free to call us at 614.834.0444. do not disregard this message as i have owned 6 new jeeps. never again. *ak | |||

| With 34180 miles on jeep the transmission had to be replaced. i requested a buy-back from chrysler. there was an arbitration hearing with national center for dispute settlement. at this time i found out that the rear-end had been replaced before i purchased the vehicle. we were denigned a buy-back but was assured that chrysler would stand behind the repairs for 12/12. at 44839 miles the transmission had to be replace again with chrysler saying they would only pay for the parts and me the labor. now with 50000 miles the jeep still does not shift correctly. i have had other smaller problems besides this such as brake-line burstin and power steering pulley breaking and at this time the ac is not working. i have had 4 jepps before this one and never had any problems with them. *ak | |||

| All of the problems identified in my complaints are covered by chrysler extended warranty. but i strongly feel jeep is building an inferior and unsafe product which can cause serious accidents. the most notables were the (2) auto transmissions failure at freeway speed. the transmissions had to be replaced and the replacement unit was installed with a defective pump which also went out. the most recent incident is with the engine and all electrical system shuts off at freeway speed with no warning. the explaination given was a weak battery and loose battery cable. all other incidents are due to sub-standard jeep oem parts. i wish my complaint will force jeep to investigate why a jeep grand cherokee 5.9 limited, their flagship, would failed time after time at such a young mileage. thank you.*ak | |||

| We purchased a 1998 jeep grand cherokee in october 2000. in spring of 2001, i was in my garage and i turned the vehicle on while our garage door was half way up. the vehicle jumped into reverse without me even touching the shifter. our car was damaged because the bottom of the garage door clipped the top of the vehicle denting and scratching it(the vehicle was damaged, the garage door suprisingly was fine). the jeep was taken in to be repaired at an autobody shop, and i had to pay over 500 dollars. i then learned that there was a recall for that vehicle, the car has a tendency to slip into reverse suddenly. i called jeep grand cherokee right when i learned of the recall, i faxed them all the necessary information (this was january 2003) and they examined the vehicle. i have not heard anything from them as they will not pay for the damage. also, the vehicle did not get the recall part to fix the problem. i am very upset as we are very lucky that no one was behind the vehicle when it jumped into reverse. let me know if there is any help that you can give us in this matter. thanks again ,james emperor jempero@comcast.ent. *ak | |||

| On 9/20/01 at 12:15am i was proceeding north bound on i-95 and pulled off to the side of the road at mile marker 71.7 after hearing a noise under the jeep. i put the vehicle in park with and left the engine running. i was on a flat surface, aprrox. 15 feet off the right shoulder of the road. i exited the vehicle and took 1 or 2 steps toward the rear when the drivers door hit me, throwing me toward the seat, where i became wedged between the door frame and floor below the seat, the vehicle was in reverse. i was drug approx. 20-30 feet before i became dislodged from the vehicle. the vehicle continued in reverse. i was able to get up and run after the vehicle and re-enter the jeep and apply the brake. while the vehicle was in reverse it ran over a 2 1/2 metal pole with a reflector on it. the jeep sustained front and rear bumper damage and both needed to be replaced. the injuries i sustained 1. major bruising to my to my chest, breasts and both arms. 2. laceration to my right elbow. 3. major abrasion (road rash) to my lower abdomen. 4. abrasions to both knees. i contacted daimler chrysler and on 11/1/01 an investigator by the name of john tedder came to evaluate the vehicle. on 10/14/01 i received a letter from daimler chrysler, which stated that after they reviewed the inspection report they were unable to duplicate my concerns about the vehicle. their inspection revealed that the accelerator pedal, throttle cable, return springs and all associated parts were operating properly. it also noted that the parking pawl and brake inter-lock systems were also operating. therefore, they decline any responsiblity associated with the incident. can nhtsa please keep me informed if possible to any investigative reports you may have? | |||

| Vehicle was left running and in park. 45 seconds to one minute after being parked, it rolled backwards out of the parking spot, across a narrow roadway and hit a wall. the reverse lights did not come on. i witnessed the event (fortunately nobody was injured - although very, very close). however, i pursued the issue without success. i was able to recreate the problem with the transmission. the dealership said there was nothing wrong with the shifter even though they agreed that it was visibly showing park but was in fact, engaged in reverse. i suspected that they were familiar with the problem before i brought the car to them. i sold the car shortly thereafter as a result of the incident. i am submitting this complain just in case my incident can help with the current investigation. there was obviously a defect in the shifter. i knew others would have the same issue and sooner or later something would come of it for chrysler. i documented the entire event, however, currently have not been able to find my documentation (this took place over 2 years ago. yet, i am still looking). i hope i can help with the investigation, i am very knowledgeable about automobiles, there was definitely a defect in the design of the shifter console i am absolutely certain of it. *ak | |||

| I had taken my 1998 jeep grand cherokee into a very dependable and honest repair shop in san antonio tx for an issue and while they test drove the vehicle they noted a noise from the rear of the vehicle. of course, i assumed this was rode noise and didn't think anything of it. they informed me that it was a common issue with that model of vehicle. this was during the week of june 2004. the main problem is that i purchased the vehicle july 4, 2001 in austin tx and i thought i purchased a 3 year extended service plan. which should have covered it. what i found out is that i purchased a plan that extended the original cars coverage for 3 years. i ended up purchasing a contract for a period i did not own the car. the plan expired on june 10, 2004. this was very misleading by the car dealership i bought the car from and the chrysler warranty company when i called about it during june while the car was in the repair shop. the warranty company would not cover the cost of the repair approximately $2,000 because they had previous claims on the vehicle. i feel this repair should have been covered because i purchased a three year extended warranty plan on july 4, 2001 which to me should have ended july 4, 2004 and the rear axle is a common issue with this model of vehicle. had i known the road noise was really a problem coming into existence or had i paid closer attention to the warranty information when i received it this could all have been avoided. if this is not an issue you can offer any advice or assistance on please let me know. the incident date below is an approximation. i do not have the repair order in front of me with the exact dates. your website was brought to my attention today and i wanted to get the details to you as soon as possible. if you can assist with any of the warranty work with chrysler i can provide exact dates and policy information as necessary. thank you. *ak | |||

| Sole owner of 1998 jeep grand cherokee 2wd with less than 39,000 to date. vehicle has been treated with care and it has received regular maintenance service from local jeep dealerships, excluding a few oil changes. rear carrier, pinion and axle bearings replaced at 32,339 miles (07-08-03) due to significant whining noise in rear of vehicle, within a month after driving from california to north carolina. noise returns in september 2004. at 38,620 miles on 09-28-04, same local dealership advises that bearings are bad again and has offered goodwill warranty repair. although dealership is paying for 2nd repair, i am concerned because the vehicle needed a bearing job after so few miles and then needs another 6,000 miles later. i'm concerned that there is something more serious wrong with the driveline, which is causing the bearing problem, and could result in a serious failure. the vehicle received a routine service of the rear differential at the local dealership in california on 01-18-02 at 24,643 miles. could this have started the problem? the vehicle has had other repairs (a/c condenser coil, power seat assembly, starter, fuel pump, brake master cylinder, ), some which seem somewhat unreasonable, but this one seems extremely unreasonable. *ak | |||

| 1998 jeep grand cherokee, complaint #1 filed in may, 2003 for same defective failure part-power train: driveline: constant velocity joint. august 22, 2003 same brand new $700.00 drive shaft cracked and broke for second time, 2 days short of 3 months same (new) part has broken again. this jeep was purchased on 5/7/03 and has now become a serious matter. a brand new drive shaft installed not even 3 months old had gone out again. we have owned this jeep since 5/7/03 and have replaced front brake pads, front driver's side rotor, 2 oil changes, spark plugs, lube, rear & front differential fluid and changed oil in the transer case, on top of ordering a brand new drive shaft that broke the first time 2 weeks after driving it off the used car lot. now, 8/22/03 the new drive shaft has broken again, problems with the cv boot. the jeep has not been taken off road. it is driven to and from work, approximately 50-60 miles per week. less than 3,000 miles since the new drive shaft was installed, it has broken once again. apparently this problem is common, yet the manufacturer refuses to recall the defect. it is not in our interest or financial stability to keep this automobile, yet we hate to see the next buyer to endure such hardship and costs obtained with the ownership of it either. we have no choice but to trade it in once the part is replaced a second time, this has been a nuisance and a very stressful situation that we find ourselves in regarding ownership of this vehicle. it's a crime that a dealer can sell such an item to unknowing consumers. we've learned that it is best to buy new and it a deal seems to good to be true. in this fact, it truly was. | |||

| The flexible rubber boots which seal the front cv joints have already developed cracks after only 38000 miles. the cracks result in sand and debris collecting in the drive shafts of the front wheel drive. the left side has developed the most severe damage, but a dealer repair shop has indicated that the right side has also developed some damage. my main concern here is not just the potential safety issue but also the inevitable reoccurring cost. i have been quoted a minimum of $350.00 to repair the boots. the dealership which i have taken my jeep to highly recommends that both, the front boots and axle assemblies be replaced, which would be a minimum cost of $425.00. the previous owner had purchased the vehicle brand new. when i purchased it from him, i met with him at his place of business and talked with him and several of his employees. everyone, including the owner himself, emphaticaly stated that he (the owner) in no way has misused ther vehicle or has ever taken it off the road. i thouroghly discussed the history of the vehicle with the original owner and i had concluded that there was no abuse or neglect. the vehicle had been meticulously maintained. i myself also had not even used the vehicle on anything but a paved road. therefore, if this occurs so easily after only 38000 miles or perhaps even sooner, from casual driving, then it is not feasable for me to even keep the vehicle, or anyone else for that matter. i would like to know if chrysler has a fix for this problem; because, there is no doubt that others are having similar problems. thank you, gerald ezell.*ak | |||

| Heard a noise coming from the rear of the car took it into the shop and was told that it was the rear differential, and i was also informed that my transmission was slipping in 1st & 2nd gear. i had the differential repaired and the transmission serviced. we got snow this year where you would need the 4 wheel drive, well being i never had the need to use the 4 wheel drive mode i was surprised to find out that mine didn't work. took it into the shop and was told that the transfer casing and transmission need to be replaced. so i took it to the dealer i bought the jeep from. i let them repair my transfer casing and was told because i didn't have the exact same tires on the vehicle that is what caused the transfer casing to fail. the tires were the same size on the front and rear just different brands. they told me that i didn't have a problem with the transmission. i then picked the jeep up and the roaring sound came back so i took it to the dealer to see what they thought the noise was i was told at that time that my front differential was bad and needed to be repaired and that the rear differential was also bad, but being i had that work done at a independent shop i had to take it back to them to fix the rear and then took the jeep back to the dealer to have them do the work on the front. i am in the process of taking the jeep back to the dealership because my jeep is now pulling to the right. i was able to drive my jeep for a week. i really have not had my jeep since january i really think that daimler chrysler knows there is a problem with the 1998 jeep grand cherokee and i hope that something will be done about. *jb | |||

| All of the problems identified in my complaints are covered by chrysler extended warranty. but i strongly feel jeep is building an inferior and unsafe product which can cause serious accidents. the most notables were the (2) auto transmissions failure at freeway speed. the transmissions had to be replaced and the replacement unit was installed with a defective pump which also went out. the most recent incident is with the engine and all electrical system shuts off at freeway speed with no warning. the explaination given was a weak battery and loose battery cable. all other incidents are due to sub-standard jeep oem parts. i wish my complaint will force jeep to investigate why a jeep grand cherokee 5.9 limited, their flagship, would failed time after time at such a young mileage. thank you.*ak | |||

| Vibration, roaring & rear end noise five weeks after purchasing vehicle. drive shaft was replaced at 4941 miles. the problem reappeared and the axle assembly was replaced at 13947 miles. rear assembly replaced again two months later at 16387 miles. rear end / scraping noise and roaring reappeared. metal found inside rear differential pan and side berring race damaged. the entire rear end unit was replaced at 28844 miles. prior to the jeep being repaired on the previous dates indicated, it was also brought in for similar type problems on 11/12/99 at 25775 miles and 1/24/00 at 28323 miles but was not repaired. the last time it was repaired on 2/9/00, the jeep was at the dealership for three days and they said there was nothing wrong. however, after demanding that the rear end be checked, they found metal inside the rear differential pan and that the side berring race was damaged. *ak | |||

| Dealer sold vehicle with leaking rear seals, defective differential. noticed bumping and whining noise less than 8 hours after purchase. sun roof leaked causing the headliner to detach from roof of vehicle. repaired once-said drain tubes were routed properly. second time replaced roof-said seals did not match. rear differential replaced. but did not address leakage around transfer case, seals etc in dec 98. now it's in the shop again! gas gauge fluctuates to empty when idling. transmission slips. driver seat automatiically reclines and heater does not work consistently. | |||

| Front differential initially rebuilt by dealer, at same time rear differential was replaced.. subsequently front differential failed and was replaced in total, including axle housing. while traveling 200 miles from home at 65 mph in passing zone car died losing all power. able to make breakdown lane through traffic, waited 1.5 hrs. for chrylser provided tow to nearest dealer. closed at 8:45 p.m. on friday. tow truck took us to hotel and returned our disabled car to dealership. they were only open for sales on saturday, so we needed to rent a car to get to relatives house for sat. night till someone from home could come up and tow our disabled car back to ny on sunday, where it was left at local dealer. dealer said coil wire was routed to close to exhaust manifold causing it to overheat and short to manifold, causing loss of power. | |||

| Howling noise when traveling between 50 to 70 mph. have had vehicle into the dealership 9 times for same problem. the grand cherokee is a quadra-trac. the dealership and the chrysler rep. (bob horne) have told us that chrylser is aware of this problem and cannot repair the problem, that we have to live with it or purchase a select-trac or 2-wheel drive the next time. that was their solution for fixing our vehicle. if chrysler is aware that the problem exists, why are they not letting the consumer know at the time of purchase and investigating the problem to find a solution. we didn't pay almost 30,000.00 to listen to a howling noise in the rear-end for 4 years, and to be told to turn the radio up louder.....please help. *ak | |||

| I recently found out that the viscous coupler in my 1998 jeep grand cherokee needs replacing. this part when defective does not allow the vehicle to make safe turns. the turning radius at slower speeds is absolutely awful and i have had several near misses while trying to manuver the vehicle that suddenly drives as if it we in 4wd low gear. i have heard that this is a common problem from others who own jeeps and postings on the web. i have been aware of the tight turning radius for quite a while but was not aware anything was wrong. the vehicle has been in for tune ups and oil changes and nothing has been mentioned to me until just now. | |||

| Heard a noise coming from the rear of the car took it into the shop and was told that it was the rear differential, and i was also informed that my transmission was slipping in 1st & 2nd gear. i had the differential repaired and the transmission serviced. we got snow this year where you would need the 4 wheel drive, well being i never had the need to use the 4 wheel drive mode i was surprised to find out that mine didn't work. took it into the shop and was told that the transfer casing and transmission need to be replaced. so i took it to the dealer i bought the jeep from. i let them repair my transfer casing and was told because i didn't have the exact same tires on the vehicle that is what caused the transfer casing to fail. the tires were the same size on the front and rear just different brands. they told me that i didn't have a problem with the transmission. i then picked the jeep up and the roaring sound came back so i took it to the dealer to see what they thought the noise was i was told at that time that my front differential was bad and needed to be repaired and that the rear differential was also bad, but being i had that work done at a independent shop i had to take it back to them to fix the rear and then took the jeep back to the dealer to have them do the work on the front. i am in the process of taking the jeep back to the dealership because my jeep is now pulling to the right. i was able to drive my jeep for a week. i really have not had my jeep since january i really think that daimler chrysler knows there is a problem with the 1998 jeep grand cherokee and i hope that something will be done about. *jb | |||
