EA02029 | CHRYSLER GROUP LLC | 10/16/2002 | 02/10/2004 | HOOD LATCH FAILURE
Odi opened ea02-029 to determine whether a safety-related defect trend existed in the my 1997 jeep grand cherokee hood latch assemblies.during ea02-029, there was no specific failure mechanism identified that could differentiate the my 1997 vehicles from other vehicles containing this same hood latch assembly or could account for their higher complaint rate.as a result, odi expanded the scope of this investigation to include all grand cherokee vehicles equipped with the subject hood latch assemblies.in performing ea02-029, it was determined that some of the secondary hood latches in the subject vehicles may exhibit increased operating frictional resistance; however, since none of the primary hood latches showed any evidence of mechanical or operational deficiency and the complaint rate of hood fly-ups measured over an extended exposure time was low, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time.

While driving, heard constant noise. took vehicle to dealer for service who stated that exhaust manifold needed to be replaced.*ak the exhaust manifold cracks gradually and is noticeable when the vehicle is cold. any air leak in the firewall allows exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle. *yh

The glass sun roof of our 1998 jeep grand cherokee totally detached (blew off) while my wife and 4 year old grandson were driving on an idaho hiway at a speed of about 55 mph. fortunately there was no traffic directly behind the vehicle. upon calling our local jeep dealer we were told that they had never heard of such an occurrance and were of absolutely no help.

Dealer sold vehicle with leaking rear seals, defective differential. noticed bumping and whining noise less than 8 hours after purchase. sun roof leaked causing the headliner to detach from roof of vehicle. repaired once-said drain tubes were routed properly. second time replaced roof-said seals did not match. rear differential replaced. but did not address leakage around transfer case, seals etc in dec 98. now it's in the shop again! gas gauge fluctuates to empty when idling. transmission slips. driver seat automatiically reclines and heater does not work consistently.

On the evening of december 1, 1998, i had my 1998 grand cherokee in park with the door open while i was getting my mail from a bank of mailboxes. while i was out of the car, it started to roll backwards, even though it was sitting on level ground. the open door hit the bank of mailboxes and i was able to get into the car to stop it. i reported this to the insurance company since i needed to have the drivers door replaced. the car was in park, and after i got in to stop it from rolling backwards, it was still in park. i never reported this to jeep because no one believed me and it has not happened since then. the jeep was leased, and i turned it in on june 27, 2001 to gene's chrysler in fairbanks, alaska. however, after reading about this happening to other jeeps in the la times, i wanted to file my complaint also.*ak

Driver side door hinge bolts are brittle and broke resulting in the hinge separating from the body frame. owner took photos of broken bolt in hingle assembly and has broken part to show a poor cast of the bolt. owner drilled out and replaced one bolt until taken to dealer. dealer does not believe this is a serious issue and wishes to charge for replacement. however, the failure of both bolts of one hinge allowed the door to be unsafe for vehicle operation. what would have happened if this occured during movement of the vehicle? my question is could this be a result of a bad batch of bolts and has this occured to another vehicle?
