Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.

At speeds above 50 mph, when the brakes are applied, the steering starts to shake violently and the brakes are slow to work. i reported this problem to the dealer. they look at the problem and found that the front and rear brakes (rotors) were warped. they tried to grind the original ones. that did not help the problem at all. now they are going to try and replace the front and rear rotors. i hope this works. i paid almost $30,000 for this vehicle and i feel ripped off. not to mention all the time i have to take off work to go to the dealer to fix these problmes.

I drive a jeep grand cherokee with 68,000 miles and just had the brakes fixed again for the 6th time. my dealer keeps telling me the parts are inferior and i can expect to replace the brakes after 6-7000 miles. i feel this is excessive and jeep should be able to develope a material that will help the brakes last longer. other makes of cars never have the problem that jeep does. i also feel this could be very dangerous since not every one can afford to replace the brakes every 7,000 miles. i can see by the internet that there are thousands of complaints, can't you do something before this is a fire, property damage or crash?

Vehicle feels like it's riding while the parking brake (?) is engaged, at times only, not always. there just seems to be a sort of resistance noticed. it's been going on for about a year now and, although i've been telling my husband of it during this entire time, he just noticed the other day that, while en-route to a nearby location, upon arrival, the rear passenger-side tire area was smoking a bit. he said it was coming from the brake pads (?), and he got a cup of water and poured it on the area, to which it produced a bit more smoke, of course. now i'm certain of the resistance and i'm concerned that the brakes will wear down prematurely and won't be working when i desperately need them and have my children in the vehicle with me, which is always.

99 jeep grand cherokee purchased 4/2003. front brakes shudders at road/highway speeds of 40-65mph. acquired tis/tsb from sd school district automotive shop. tis/tsb requires replacement of akebono front calipers from teves. after replacement the problem didnt cease. did some analyzing myself, found that rear brake pads were cracked. replaced the whole rear brake components and the problem ceased until after rear brake pads passed 60% of thickness, problem arises again. my own conclusion lies to design of rear brake pad material to be insufficient for the weight of vehicle.

I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited. multiple times the left front brake caliper freezes (seizes) onto the rotor causing the vehicle to violently shake and pull to the left, warping the rotor and damaging the brake pads. i have replaced the rotors and brake pads but after a short period of time it happens again. it seems to be triggered by using the brakes frequently, for example when braking going down hills. while i have not had a fire the brakes were glowing red on one occasion. i believe this to be an extremely dangerous defect that must be corrected as my research indicates that many, if not all owners of this year (as well as other years) make and model experience this problem.

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited w/42,000 miles. yes . not a typo . 42,000, orignal owner & scared to death to drive this suv. i have alot of the already problems, that have been reported. had to pay many, w/my own cash. this suv schould have came in 1 color lemon yellow. it is an accident watng to happen. the recent problem is now i have no a/c-heat or defroster. ths is due, to failure of the automatic temp control to work. i t started 1st by intermittently working, till now not working at all, this is just 1 more, to the list , of many other problems. i don't think that it is an coincidence that all my issue have happenned, almost exactly, in the order, of all the other complaints. i can't undestand how a company can get away w/this. this new problem can cost up to $2000, if it is, like previous reported problems, happens to be the blend doors. as a handicapped driver i drive less than 4,000 miles a year. this is the only auto i drive, thus the many, many probs have yet to raise thier head. i have read almost all complaints(too many to read) this suv schould be a total recall, i have never heard more complaints & problems, in my life, for any automobile. this suv schould be studied & reseached, on how not to build an automobile. just read the many complaints here & on the internet. we are not making this stuff up. i don't know how they stayed in business as long as they did. we, the taxpayers, bailed them out. who is bailing out all the owners, of this death-trap? if that is not absurd enuff, many problems could have been repaired, by jeep & still can. what is the purpose, of nhsta, if not to intervene? you have all the complaints. hundreds of them. you have them posted, yet, we taxpayers/owners safety, has been at risk ever since this suv was driven out of the showroom. how did you not make a recall on the rotor/brakes issue which was reported at 3,000 miles? i am so frustrated. is braking problems not a safety issue? please, help us! *tr

This is my sixth replacement of the rotors and chrysler has informed me that they will not be responsible for the defective parts continuing to fail. the dealer states that approximately 1,000 customers have had replacement rotors installed and more than 20% continue to return because of pulsation and brake problems. i believe that there should be a recall after countless thousands of customers like myself have had to endure not only unsafe driving as a result of this problem, but inconveniences, additional out of pocket costs, time wasted and the hassles of dealing with the manufacture. this problem will not go away unless nhtsa does something. thank you for your attention to this important issue. *nlm

I purchased a new 1999 jeep grand cherokee in may 1999. after 11,000 miles this vehicle began shuddering when braking at speeds above 35 mph. i took the car back to the dealer and the front rotors and pads were replaced under the warranty. at 27,000 miles (nov. 2002) the problem returned . this time the warranty has expired. the dealer said they would provide the parts at no charge but i would have to pay for the labor to replace the rotors. the dealer assured me that this would be the long term solution to the brake/shudder problem. yesterday, seven months and 5,000 miles later it took the car back in for the same braking problem. this time, i have to pay for the labor to have the calipers replaced and warped rotors. i am finding that this brake problem with jeep grand cherokees is not isolated to my car. the dealer acknowledges that there are problems with the brakes for this year and model. chrysler/jeep should be forced to recall the 1999 grand cherokees and permanently fix this flawed braking system. *jb

In april of 2002 i purchased a used 1999 jeep grand cherokee from a local dealer because it had only 14000 miles on it. i have had to replace the brake rotors and pads due to vibration 2 times. at 46000 miles i put new tires on this to quiet a noise problem. now at 65000 miles the noise is extreme coming from drive train. i was told today there is a defect in the ring/pinion gear assemblies used on the 99/00 model year jeeps. but there has yet to be a recall regarding this condition. i am very disappointed in the durability of the product, as it should have lasted far longer than 65000 miles, especially for the amount paid for it! hopefully chrysler will take responsibility for poor engineering and design quality. but i doubt it. the roaring and howling noise is so loud that you can not hear others talking at road speed, and i am greatly concerned about the safety of the vehicle, but due to the great cost of it, i cannot trade it or afford to repair it because i am on disability!!!!!!!!!! *nlm

A severe shaking of the vehicle when brakes are applied. this has been going on for about 5 months, and is getting worse. was told by a dealer dick hannah in washington, chrysler would not pay for any problems though chrysler has a substantial amount of complaints against them. i found a local company to fix the problem for about $200 less than the dealer. i am still very pissed-off about the customer service of chrysler. with this many complaints why are they so unwilling to pay for, what sounds to me, like an engineering mistake in the design of the brakes. i will never buy a chrysler product again. *jb

The dealer recommended the front brake rotors, pads, and calipers on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee be replaced at a cost of $400. this is due to a service bulletin issued by chrysler in early 2002. although chrysler recommends this kit for 1999 jeep grand cherokees, it will only cover the cost of this change for vehicles currently under warranty. the dealer told me the original caliper design was a two piston arrangement that applied uneven pressure to the rotor through the brake pads resulting in uneven wear on the rotors. the new caliper is a four piston design that applies pressure in a more evenly distributed fashion. an inadequate design of the front brake caliper that results in uneven wear is a safety issue the cost of which should be covered by chrysler for all vehicles containing this problem. i was advised by chrylser that if a recall is issued in the future i would be reimbursed. *nlm

While traveling down a mountain road, gaining speed, put car into 2nd gear in order to slow down and not over-use the brakes...car suddenly bolted back and brakes locked up and became unresponsive. i steered out of hitting the median , (it was a windy mountain road), but hit the back of a tractor trailor.. i was then hit from behind by another tractor-trailor and projected fowared. i was able to manuever over to shoulder of road. placed car's transmission in park..but it continued to move foward !!! i had minor aches and pains, car sustained at least $9500 worth of collission damage. told repair to check brakes and transmission...they said everything ok.. i did not do anything unusual in this driving experience. i am extremely fearful of the vehicle. it is still in shop waiting for final estimate. i want to make sure the frame and brakes and transmission are ok before i consider using vehicle again. my confidence is lost. can jeep respond and let me know why this happened...will they buy-back ? it is on extended warranty til january 2003 or 43,000 miles. i just purchased in january of 2002. i now realize many jeeps have many problems.*ak

The brakes pulsate dramatically whe applying brakes steadily above 50mph. this started at 23,000 miles, reported at 30,000 miles-no work done, reported again at 32,000 miles, refaced both front rotors-warped. reported same pulsating at over 50 mph 37,748 miles-refaced both front rotors. in checking your web site there are dozens of complaints along these same lines, abnormal vibrations/ pulsating from brakes when braking over 50mph. this condition is either faulty materials and/or bad engineering. if not corrected by mfg. serious accidents will result which could have been avoided. chrysler is aware of these complaints and knows that this repeated problem is not within the normal, acceptable range of performance, but they try to deny they have a serious problem which needs correcting.*ak

I contacted nhtsa last week. update: i received a technical service bullitin #05-01-00 rev a dated 14 april 00. under discussion the bullitin states, a new brake pad repair kit has been released which contains an adhesive backing. this will provide for a more positive release of the brake pad when the brake pedal is released. this, in turn will move the pad away from the rotor, resulting in less friction and wear, which resulted from the pad resting on the rotor when brakes were not applied. the bullitin goes into the repair and then goes into the policy. the policy is reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty remember, i had the brakes and rotors changed in jan 2000. nine months later i need to repair them again but i have to pay for the repairs. reading this bulletin makes it obvious that chryselor knows that they are at fault but are placing the cost to the customer. totally unfair! this could be a safety issue. if you read the bulletin it states that the jeep will vibrate at the steering wheel and seat. this could cause a person to panic at a high rate of speed. please put me on the list of comlainers about this problem and let me know what chryslers position is with this problem. chrysler does not want to give me any explanation except sorry if you feel this way. thank you! sfc dudzik. *ak

I have experienced chronic problems with the front rotors on my car. i have felt pulsation while breaking at regular 6 month intervals and have had to repeatedly bring the car in for service to remedy this problem. specifically, the rotors have been resurfaced every 6000 miles and replaced every 12000 miles. this happened at 12,000, 18,000, 24,000, 30,000 and now at 36,000 when the dealer suggests that i replace the front and rear brakes and rotors. initially i recieved some assistance from the dealer with the rotors resurfaced twice and replaced once at their expense, but now they are claiming no further responsibility and have even suggested that this may be my driving that is causing the problem. seeing how many similar complaints there are on the internet, i highly doubt this possibility. additionally my conversation with two technicians at the boardwalk auto center in redwood city, california and technicians at connell in oakland, california, i am led to believe that this is a known problem with some of the 1999-2000+ grand cherokees. i must say that i am very disappointed that a new car of this caliber should have any such problems. also, i am increasingly concerned about safety as i know how crucial brakes are for safe driving. i fear that i will continue to experience this problem, on average, every 6,000 miles; i find that to be an unacceptable situation. is there anything you can do to advocate for me and the hundreds of others in a similar situation? thank you.*ak

There is a defect in the brakes for the 1999 jeep. a very large percentage of the jeep problems on your web site relate to this speciifc problem. the dealer and manufacturer are ignoring my complaints. every 10,000 miles or so the jeep will wobble severely when brakes are applied because of premature warping of brakes/rotors/drums and discs. the descriptions of others on your web site are identical to this. *ak

I purchased the vehicle in oct 2000 with 28000 miles. we have approximatly 29500 miles on it now. when driving a freeway speeds the steering wheel will vibrate quite severly. traveling down hill will make this problem more pronounced, eg. more vibration. i called the dealer and was informed that this is not covered by warrenty. i replaced the front discs myself and found that the front discs had allready been cut to the wear limit stated on the discs. less material left on discs warpage a lot sooner. it appears that many other owners of this vehicle have had to repalace disc for the same problem. in conclusion vibrating steering wheels take your attention off the road and pose a dangerous situation when it happens. i am sure you will find a mountain of brake dsics attesting to this problem. hopefully no accident damaged people.*ak

1999 jeep grand cherokee chronic brake system problem the front wheels pulsate and the steering shimmies when the brakes are applied at highway speeds. safety is a major concern since the problem becomes more pronounced under urgent braking conditions. jeep service has made six (6) attempts to fix the problem without success. history:the jeep service department has made six (6) unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem only to have it reappear approximated 5,000 miles after each service attempt. the warranty period for the brake system has now expired and in spite of the six failed attempts the jeep service area manager has suggested that he can no longer continue to pay the cost of these service calls and it will become my responsibility. i have rejected his last service recommendation that would require me to pay for new brake pads and installation labor, while jeep service would replace the defective rotors at no charge. there has been no reassurance that this would resolve the problem. problem diagnosis: the cause of the pulsating problem has been attributed to a condition that is causing the brake rotors to over-heat and then warp. the six (6) attempts to correct the problem have entailed four (4) front wheels rotor resurfacing experiments, one (1) front wheels rotor replacement and one (1) recommendation this week to replace the rotors again. the service representative has suggested that the vehicle driver is misapplying the brakes and causing the problem. (this is pure speculation and an unsubstantiated accusation) my position is that a jeep brake system design or product failure exists that has not yet been identified and at this time there is no known solution to the problem. resolution:my first preference is that jeep fix the problem and allow me to enjoy the vehicle i selected to purchase almost two years ago. an alternative would be for jeep to continue making the necessary repairs to the brake system until they solve the problem. *ak

On three occasions, i have had very noticable vibration of the steering wheel, when braking at highway speeds(50-60mph). the 1st time was 30aug2000. the correction made was to cut the front brake rotors. the 2nd time was 12dec2000, at 36,242mi. the correction made was to resurface the front brake rotors. the 3rd time i had to have service was 16mar2001 at 41,560mi. the correction made was to have the front brake rotors resurfaced. the service reps. have told me, several times, that this is a common occurance. the cause, as best i can remember, is the size of the brake rotors versus (i believe) the brake shoes. i have talked to one other person, who stated stated his wife grand cherokee, has the same problem. so far there has been no recall, on this problem. so far, other than the steering wheel vibrating(at high speeds) when braking, i have not had it cause further problems. i hope that it does not, but wanted to contact your agency, to see what, if anything can be done, to remedy the problem. thankyou for your assistance.

Repated brake failures: front brake rotors continue to warp and fail every 5000 to 12000 miles. dealership continues to replace rotors, but fails to discover the cause of the problem. brakes are the number one safety component on a vehicle, and this vehicle is not safe. the most recent failure has caused the anti-lock brake system to fail. during emergency stops the front brakes lock and vehicle begins to skid. after four failures, this vehicle does not conform to the applicable express warranties, and the manufacturer has had a reasonable number of attempts to repair. daimler-chrysler should either replace the vehicle or reimburse me for the purchase price of the vehicle less the amount attributable to use prior to the first discovery of the nonconformity at 12,335 miles.*ak

I have done some limited research and have found that daimar-chrysler has isued a technical service bulletin for this problem. i feel this is a major safety problem since it involves the brakes and the rotors are warping for no apparent reason. if the metal in the rotors cannot handle the heat and warp, what effect does this have on the molecular structure of the rotor? will it break apart next time? their fix for the problem is to turn or grind the rotors. sure fixes problem for a period of time. this is second time in about 10,000 miles. thanks!

Initial problem was diagnosed as excessive runout on front rotors and was repaired under warranty by turning the rotors with an on the car lathe. the same symptoms began to reoccur at approx. 22000 miles. lightly at first, and now very severe shaking happens between 50 and 60 mph when brakes are applied. it is currently being reapaired, but i'm told not under warranty. the advisor says it is caused by improper torquing of wheel bolts. of all the vehicles i've owned, i have never had this type of problem before. i beleive these parts are defective and should be recalled. brakes should not have to be repaired every 12000 miles.

I had a pulsation/roughness when braking. the front rotors were found to have two to four 1/2 to 1 inch cracks coming from the center hub holes. if these cracks went undetected, it would of caused a serious accident. the dealership and daimlerchrysler are stating the reason why i'm having the problems is because of my first brake job, done only about 10,000 miles ago. they said that non-mopar pads (wagner) were used. my mechanic checked the pads, which are still like new, and found nothing wrong. i have had 5 cherokees to date and my mechanic has always used wagner and has had no problems. in doing research on 1999 jgc rotors, there have been many complaints on these rotors. even in pass years they have had recalls for rotors on jgc. there was a recall for rotors on 96-98 jgc, vehicles made 7/95-10/98. my 1999 jgc was manufactured in 11/98, which is only one month different from the recall. couid these be the same rotors? it has been even noted on tsb with 1999 jeeps that there have been brake/rotor problems. i think there should be a recall on these rotors because of the safety issue and the many noted complaints that have been received. i think they are using inferior metal for these rotors. *ak

Rotors need replaced again. they say its my driving habits. rotors should not have to be replaced at 12,000 mile incriments at owners expense. there has to be a problem with the way the vehicle was built. i have owned other cars and never replaced my rotors. the rotors were replaced in january 2000 at 12,500 mile. the dealership in michigan replaced at no cost to me. now that i am in oklahoma, it is doing the same thing and eddie cordes dealership said i am the cause for the need of replacement. i do not think rotors should need replacement in only nine months from previouse replacement. chrysler corporation told me to have them look at it again but most likley i will have to pay for them because brake and rotor warranties are only good for 12,000 mile or 1 year from purchase. please investigate!

Dt*: the contact stated while braking at any speed, the steering wheel shakes. the dealership replaced the rotors four times, but this has not fixed the problem. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop that determined the calipers need to be replaced. when shaking occurs the vehicle seems to have less stopping power. a driver unaccustomed to wheel shaking when braking could lose control of the vehicle. contact has already replaced six sets of rotors. there seems to be inherent flaw in the original brake design. the contact felt the dealer did his best to try to correct the problem. *ak

I purchased this jeep used with around 25k miles on it. after bout 1 year of driving my rotors started to vibrate when brake applied. after a couple days of this my drivers side brake caliper locked up while my family and i were out for a ride. i pulled over to see my rotor glowing red, i left the vehicle parked there over night replaced rotor, pads, and a new caliper. within 2 months same thing occurred with the passenger side, so i fixed that side. since the original problem i've replaced both rotors 3 times and pads 4 times in less than 8 months. dealer says there is nothing wrong with brake system, i disagree. after researching this on the internet i see that a lot of owners have the exact same problem. i can not see how a manufacturer can get away with these kind of problems. i know that if the company i work for had built and sold faulty products we would be sued and out of business. why is this company allowed to get away with these obvious malfunctions of one of the key components in safety on a car, the brakes. thanks for any and all help. *jb

Continued problem with significant front brakes pulsation during light to moderate braking. at times, steering wheel vibrates violently. learned of how common the problem was from this web site within a year after purchasing vehicle new in 1998. kept hoping for jeep to step up and accept responsibility. nursed original parts to 68k miles waiting for jeep to come up with better solution than frequent replacment of rotors. finally, in 2002, new service bulletin called for replacing calipers with new design. new caliper and rotors installed nov 2002, 20k miles later, problem returned. spoke to local service managers, no solution. spoke with jeep corporate hq, no solution.*ak

My 1999 jeep grand chrerokee has a significant brake system problem requiring turning of the rotors at approximately 9,000 miles and replacement of the brakes and rotors at approximately 19,000, 36,000, and 51,000 miles(approximate mileages based on memory but i can provide detailed service records if needed) each time replacement was required to eliminate a severe vibration (which felt like i was driving over rough railroad tracks) when the brake pedal was depressed. all installments prior to the one at 51,000 miles have been at the jeep dealer. each time, when i questioned why such frequent replacement was needed, i was told it's a wear and tear item. the most recent rotor change (at 51,000 miles) was performed by an experienced person at an independent garage. he told me that the problem appears to him to be a design flaw resulting in misalignment of the brake calipers, rotors and brake pads such that one of the two brake pistons brakes is striking its target slightly off-center. continuous misalignment of the brake pistons appears to be causing the rotors and brake pads to wear unevenly resulting in development of the vibration. so replacing the rotors and brake pads fixed the problem for now but is only a temporary solution. with new rotors and brake pads, the vehicle is braking fine but i anticipate that by 60,000 - 65,000 miles the problem will occur again. you have several tsb's on your website reporting vibrations when the brake pedal on this model vehicle is depressed but none of the tsb's elaborate on the cause of the problem. i have contacted chrysler directly multiple times and keep getting put off with it's a wear and tear item. now that i have been alerted to the possiblity that there appears to be a brake design flaw i think that they are just ignoring a problem that should probably be a recall. i am not aware of any safety issues. thank you for looking into this problem.*ak

Defect in rotors/calipers on 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo. braking at 40 miles & above car shimmied.rrotors changed under warranty three times within first 2years. adams jeep, west street, annapolis, md would no longer cover under warranty. they denied there was a defect. chryser rep said it was my driving and washed their hands of me. my neighbor had same problem and he said a friend of his who works for a jeep dealership in maryland told him there is a defect but it is not the rotors, it's the calipers that sit on top of the rotors that was warping them. he gave me his paper work and it showed a special package chryser had put together to take care of the problem (i can send you the paper work). i faxed to adams jeep, enclosing my neighbor's paperwork and told them i knew now of the defect. i demanded they fix my car with this pecial package. they called fifteen minutes later and said ms gingell, when would you like to come in and we will take care of this for you at no charge! i have another friend with same car/year who has same trouble and adams jeep has refused to fix the problem for free. her daughter also has the same type of jeep and she is also having the same problem. i went onto the website of www.edmunds.com and there are many people complaining their rotors. i am a year down the road now from supposedly having problem fixed and rotors are again starting to shimmy. i am going to take it back into adams jeep of annapolis. *ak

I bought a 5-star certifed low mileage 1999 jeep grand cherokee from russwood motors. lincoln, ne. brake pulsation was noted on test drive, and dealer agreed to correct before delivery. again after a short time and very few miles, the puslation reappeared. russwood again agreed to correct this. later this pulsation came back, worse. i had the brakes serviced at another location. later, last winter the pulsation became progressivley worse. in south texsas for the winter, we elected to wait till we returned to nebraska so russwood could permanently correct the problem. russwood advised the repair was covered by jeep service bulletin 05-003-02-rev.b (and prior), my warranty had just expired, and the repair would be at my expense, amounting to about $600. i telephoned the jeep customer serivice line and got a terse reply that jeep would not assume any responsibility nor expense for the service bulletin repair. i emailed the jeep customer service and got another terse reply reporting my problem had already been addressed and they would file my commnication. jeep will perform this repair if i have to call in ralph nader. jeep by their bulletin acknowledges a known safety problem and an original design deficiency. application of brakes at highway speeds results in a wild shimmying and dodging. it must be corrected. *ak

Faulty brake rotors have been a systemic problem on this vehicle. the symptom is severe pulsation which worsens over time causing the vehicle to lurch and/or be unstable while braking. rotors were turned or replaced at 10000 miles, 18000 miles, 31000 miles, and 35000 miles. at 36k miles, my warranty ran out and jeep would not fix this any longer at no cost. i incurred an expense of $351.90 at 52k miles and another $544.76 at 69k miles. the final repair was a full brake replacement with new designed parts (routers and calipers) and appeared to fix the problem. at 80000 miles, the problem is back somewhat and is worsening over time. continuing to pay for repairs of a systemic problem with routers warping due to high heat should not be the reponsibilty of the consumer. *ak

A 1999 jeep grand cherokee with 28000 miles developed a grinding noise in the right front wheel. upon inspection at a local service station it was found that all four rotors on the vehicle were cracked.i contacted chrysler customer assistance to inform them of the problem and a dangerous situation and was informed that since the warranty was only 12,000miles , that there was nothing they would do. i feel that this is a very dangerous situation and that the rotors were probably defective from the manufacturer.

I have a 99 jeep grand cherokee. i currently have 34,000 miles on the car and have taken the car to dealer 3 times for excessive vibration when i use the brakes. i was told the rotors had to be turned when i brought it in the first time (19,000 miles). i just brought the car back in today for the same problem and was told by the dealer that chrysler came out with a service bulletin on the rotors, but would have to be replaced at my expense. this is bs. i'm a mechanic in the air force and this is a big time safety issue. if left uncorrected this may eventually cause break failure. ts

Brake rotors are warped, causing severe shimmy on braking. i thought it was peculiar that the service advisor said they would charge me to inspect if he reported this problem. i will not pay for something that should be a warranty issue. the brake rotor problem with the grand cherokee is widely publicized. i think the reason the dealer charges to inspect this is to discourage as many people as possible from reporting this widespread problem.*ak

Problem 1)the front brake rotors had to be turned @ 14,000 miles and again around 22,000 miles. they are vibrating with each braking again @ 39,000 miles. i have been driving for 25 years and have never had a problem like this before. autopark tried to make it appear that someone was riding the brakes. autopark told us they were not covered under warranty @ 22,000 miles although we could not find anything in our warranty book stating that. the autopark mechanic had to go to his shop warranty manual on page 300 and something to find the small print. again, it is not in our warranty information. we believe there is a defect from the factory. problem 2) i had been smelling gasoline inside the vehicle for a couple of months and the vehicle is slow to start most of the time. the vehicle would not start and stay running on june 3, 2002. upon the 2nd attempt to start the vehicle, i smelled gas, turned the vehicle off, and gas poured out of the vehicle onto the ground. this is a very dangerous, potentially deadly problem. i had to have the car towed because the gas continued to leak from underneath the car. the jeep continues to be slow to start w/39,000 miles on it and i am concerned that the problem with the fuel line coming off is more serious than autopark relayed. if i had been anywhere other than my own garage and someone threw down a lit cigarette or a match, i would not be here to send this email to you today.*ak

This vehicle has had four repeated instances of warped front brake rotors within only 24,000 miles, a condition which may pose a safety risk. in doing some research, i have learned that this problem apparently exists on many jeep grand cherokees, including model years prior to, and after 1999. i have been informed that in an attempt to alleviate this problem on future model years, the 2003 grand cherokees will be introduced with an entirely new braking system. when the rotors begin to warp, the first noticeable sign is a slight pulsing while the brakes are applied at highway speeds. over time, the rotors become more seriously warped and the problem then is even more obvious. what was pulsing becomes more of a complete vehicle shaking that eminates from the steering column. with further deterioration of the rotors, the vehicle actually shakes significantly while the brakes are applied at highway speeds.*ak

I have ongoing problems with the front brake rotors warping. when applying the brakes, the front end begins to shake/shimmy as does the steering wheel.the first time i took my vehicle in for this was on 7/14/99 with 6,492 miles. the dealer was familiar with the problem because other vehicles were serviced for the same thing. the fix was to turn the rotors to bring them back to spec. the problem occured again and on 2/24/00 with 12,325 miles i returned to the dealer. they again turned the rotors. the third time was on 12/6/00 with 20,848 miles. since the rotors were turned the two previous times, the rotors had to be replaced. after the rotors were replaced with only 2,847 miles on the new rotors, (vehicle miles was 23,695) the problem was back. this time, i took the vehicle to a different dealer on 3/22/01,(lamarque dodge, 4848 veterans blvd., metairie, la 70006, 504/779-4200. i gave them the history on the brake rotor problem. there fix was also to turn the rotors and replace the brake pads per tsb 05-01-00. the fifth time the problem occured was on 1/10/02 with 34,419 miles. i took the vehicle back to lamarque dodge and they again turned the rotors. it is now the sixth time the problem is occuring. as of this date (5/31/02) the vehicle has 37,489 miles. this is only 3,070 miles since the rotors were turned. i am sure this time, once again, the rotors will need to be replaced. the nhtsa website has numerous complaints on this problem, as do other websites. i do not know what it takes for a recall, but i think it is time that something is done. daimlerchrylser has a serious safety issue here. i hope some action is taken soon.*ak

The front brake rotors on this vehicle have warped four times. the first occurred july 1999 at 6125 miles, the rotors were turned on the vehicle at this time. the second instance occurred october 2000. the front rotors and pads were replaced at this time. the third occurence came at 32,460 miles in august 2001. the front rotors were turned at this time. the brakes began to chatter again at around 38,000 miles and are getting progressivly worse. there has to be something wrong with either the design of this braking system, or the material used in the manufacture of the brake rotors. four times in 39,000 miles seems to be a high incidence for a vehicle used only for commuting. the dealer was very good about taking care of the first three incidences under warranty. i doubt if this will continue now that the warranty has run out, and the extended warranty does not cover brakes.*ak

In march of 2001, i noticed that there was a severe shaking when i applied the brakes at between 45-55 mph. not being one to take chances, i took my jeep in to have it checked. they said that the rotors needed resurfacing. this was done at a cost of over $200. about 2 months later, the same thing happened. this time i took it to a dealership, thinking that they might do a better job of fixing the problem. they again resurfaced the rotors for $300+. this lasted for about 4 months until november, when the same thing happened. this time it happened while my wife was driving and nearly caused an accident on the freeway as she was unaware of how the brakes would react. this time they said all my brakes - front and back were shot and i had them replaced at a cost of $600+. at no time did chrysler ever mention there might be something wrong. i ended up turning the vehicle back in 4 months early because i did not want to go through that again and i had no confidence that it wouldn't. i thought i jsut had bad luck until i started researching this on the web and found numerous complaints about this amongst other things that had gone wrong with my jeep. this was the most serious of those problems both safety-wise and monetarily-wise.*ak

At 8000 miles, brakes were pulsating badly. dealer turned rotors as a courtesy without addressing the underlying problem. now, at 19000 miles, i am having to replace all four brakes in their entirety; rotors, calipers, pistons, etc. local brake shop says chrysler uses plastic sleeves in their pistons instead of metal. this causes overheating and warping of piston which results in warping of rotors. this repair will be approximately $1000.00. local brake shop says this is a design flaw on chrysler's part. would appreciate investigation of this problem. not only is it expensive, but my brakes were shot....emergency stopping very much in question. thank you. *ak

Since i've had this vehicle the rotors have been replaced twice, resurfaced twice, and the dealer can still not fix the problem. the warping of the rotors sends a pulsation through the steering system causing the steering wheel to shimmy left and right. the car only has 32,000 miles. i do not ride the brakes, in fact i sold my last car with 75k miles on the original rotors with a pad replacement at about 60k miles. the dealer and the factory will not tell me why the rotors continue to warp and they just keep replacing them, that is until now. they are now starting to charge me for the repair even though it is under the 36,000 mile warranty period. it's absurd, i checked your web site and there are numerous complaints about this defect. i can't imagine anything more unsafe than a defect which degrades braking and steering. i strongly recommend you get after them to find a permanent fix to this blatantly obvious safety defect. thanks. *ak

The front brake rotors have severly prematurely warped twice on this vehicle causing the severe handling problems while trying to come to a stop. i was out of town at the time of the first incident and put the vehicle in the shop myself. the front rotors were resurfaced to aleviate the problem. ten thousand miles later the same thing occurs again causing severe handling problems when braking. this time the vehicle was carried to the dealer for repairs. the dealer resurfaced the rotors again which seemed to have solved the problem for the time being. this seems to be a recurring and dangerous problem for this vehicle. the dealer will not replace the rotors, only resurface them. it appears that the dealer should replace the rotors, at his expense, with high quality rotors to aleviate the problem entirely. brake rotors can only be resurfaced a number of times to solve this problem. i have reviewed the information on your web site and you seem to have quite a few complaints about this same problem with other jeep owners. obviously, this is a defect of the manufacturer and should be a recall situation. thanks for your help with this matter and i will be looking forward to hearing from you. *ak

At about 7,000 miles on the jeep it started to have vibrations of the steering wheel and front end and pulling to the right when braking, especially in the 40-60 mph range and especially when going down hill. the dealer performed service at 10530 miles and stated that rotors were warped. he machined the rotors. the problem returned almost immediately. at 13734 miles service requested again as by this time the car actually just about jumped off the road with the vibrations which occurred and the pull to the right, when braking. report of dealer states, test drove vehicle and confirmed customers concern of brake pulsation. r7r all wheels and rotors. measured rotor runout and thickness variation is .001 on all rotors. runout on front is .010. runout onrears is .008. checked all four hubs for runout all four at less than .0015. replaced front and rear rotors. at a regular service appointment at 17347 miles (on 03/01/00) the service slip indicates that i reported that the brakes are starting to pulsate. in march of 2000 the vibration and pulling to the right was such a problem that i again returned the jeep to the dealer. this time i wrote a detailed letter of the problem, both for the dealer and with a request that that letter be sent on to jeep management as a complaint. i do not know if the dealer did that. in the letter (copy available) described the problem in detail. i also stated, the real issue is that i have never had a vehicle with such a defective braking system. it is not only unnerving and takes away from driving enjoyment, but it is clearly a safety problem. it has been of interest to me that all of your service professionals with whom i have dealt have indicated that this has beeen a commonly seen problem with the 1999 jeep grand cherokee. not only have your received service guidance from chrysler on this problem, but i have been led to believe that you anticipate some sort of better fix of the problem from the manufacturer.*ak

Front brakes shake violently when applied at speed between 40 and 60 mph. continue shaking until vehicle is below 40 mph or driver lets up on brakes. i've read through the complaints and see the same thing over and over. i first had the problem at 3,707 miles (1/29/99) and archer jeep in houston resurfaced the front rotors. it happened again at 10,427 miles (6/17/99) and they again resurfaced front rotors. when it happened the third time 16,750 miles (11/11/99) they replaced the front rotors. now, at 26,090 miles (5/17/00) the problem had returned again. this is obviously not a rotor problem and if it happens on a wet road, an accident will most certainly result. this is not a maintenance or dealer problem. the dealer has been most helpful. jeep/chrysler should be made to investigate and correct this dangerous problem. warranty expires in 10,000 miles and i will still have brakes that were never right. *ak

On my new 1999 jeep grand cherokee, the brake rotors have repeatedly warped, causing severe shaking of the steering wheel and car when the brakes are applied, which greatly decreases the safety and effectiveness of the car's braking. in the 14 months and 14,398 miles since i bought the car new, the defective brake rotors have been in for repair/service four times so far. the dealer informs me that the manufacturer (daimler-chrysler) states that the problem is widespread, that the problem is caused by heat build-up that is caused by the use of new sintered metal (non-asbestos) brake pads that (the dealer says) are now federally mandated on all new cars. furthermore, the manufacturer's position is that they will repair or replace the defective brakes for a short period of time on a new car, but after that (even while the car is under warranty) they will consider further repairs to be not the manufacturers' responsibility. this is outrageous. is it true that the problem of brake rotor warpage is now widespread among new cars which are mandated to use sintered-metal brake pads? i've learned via the internet that many, many owners of new jeep grand cherokees are experiencing the same brake defect problelm that my vehicle has. shouldn't your government agency order a recall of these defective brakes? *ak

While traveling down the highway at appox. 65 mph i began to apply the brakes, the entire vehicle and steering wheel shook violently. this came without warning, after a few gentle pushes on the brake in the next few miles the shudder was less violent. it now feels as if the rotors are warped, i had the rotors turned at 6500 miles and now it seems as they are warped again. in recent days i have been careful to note the vehicles behavior, it seems that after 5-6 stoplights or braking periods in quick succession that the next few stops are especially violent, and then a few stops later it goes away. the violent shaking is strong enough to cause problems at highway speeds, i am now confined to <45 mph until the vehicle is inspected next week. *ak

Brakes: front end shakes when braking, rotors turned by dealer, but problem continues - dangerous. differential/transfercase: loud clunking noise from rear, 'roaring' noise at speeds of 30-40mph and 65-75mph. engine: stalls(dies out) when idling in gear and when putting gear from park to reverse, delear doesn't know how to fix. vehicle lunges forward when coming to a stop, almost hit vehicle in front - dangerous. idles roughly, rpms go up and down at stops, stalls. steering: pulls to right, dealer says alignment is fine. noise from steering column when turning. ac: lots of water condensed inside of vehicle at passengers feet when ac on, dealer says normal.

Front brakes shutter, causing steering to wobble, almost uncontrollably. garage machined rotors but problem came back within 1500 miles. rotors are warping under mostly highway usage with very little traffic/city usage. makes stopping or slowing very difficult on highway or ramp.*ak

Repeated problems with ac/heat being erratic, will take vehicle in for 4th time. vehicle shuddered, fixed by changing fluid. weather seal fell off. brake shudder fixed by replacement of rotors, etc. engine stalled fixed, but the rev up and lurch at stop is not yet. setting another appointment with service. *ak

Front brake rotors are to thin, causing them to warp under heat. rotors have been replaced three times. *ak

I had a severe vibration if braking over 50mph. the dealer resurfaced but not replaced the front rotors. the problem improved but is not 100% resolved. i feel unsafe driving with resurfaced warped rotors that the dealer refused to replace because crysler will not authorize it. *ak

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo had a new differential install edat 15,000 miles; two new front rotors at 36,000 and should have been done way before this; back brake drum cracked at 36,000 miles; front rotors redone again at 42000 miles; and now the motor at 52,000 miles. we had not indication (noise, etc) of the motor going, i was traveling aroung 5-10 miles per hour turning into our road and it felt like something heavy dropped out of the vehicle, it sounded like metal going through a fan. a piece of the block fell out onto the road and the people at the local dealer said they had never seen any thing like it before. it was like a bomb went off inside the motor. my question -- should chyrsler be responsible for this motor, it will be in the range of $6,000. thank you.*ak

Chrysler extended the warranty to repair front brakes, but would admit no liability on the rear brakes. *ak

In the past year the front rotors have warped three times. the dealership advises me that the will continue to turn the rotors, but will not replace them. i experience the steering wheel shakes and soft braking under hard braking conditions and feel that this could lead to an accident i the future.

Brakes pulsate when applied at high speed, steering wheel shakes when brakes applied. repeated calls to jeep consumer relations results in their denial of a problem, other than wear and tear, and that the warrenty will expire and coverage of the brake components ending.

This vehicle exhibited strong brake pulsation when stopping. manufacturer refused replacement of rotors, and turned rotors while on hubs of vehicle. pulsation has now returned.

On 7/13/2005, my wife returned from work concerned that the brakes on her '99 jeep grand cherokee were not working properly. she said that they were not stopping the vehicle, and that the brake pedal had more travel than normal. she also said that there was a leak from the car onto the driveway. upon investigation, i determined that there was a hole in the rear brake line at a point where it was mounted onto the frame by a plastic clip. there was corrosion in the immediate vicinity of the clip, and the brake fluid was escaping through a hole in the corroded area. i have scheduled the vehicle for repair or replacement of the defective brake line. i notified the daimlerchrysler customer service department via email, and was informed that they would not repair nor replace the defective part without charge. the daimlerchrysler complaint reference number is 13791846.

Vehicle is a 1999 jeep grand cherokee with 61900 miles. one brake line failed as a result of corrosion at two points where it is clipped to the car's frame. brake pedal became soft and went almost to the floor. it would not pump up. *ak vehicle was taken to a firestone repair shop where the failed brake line was discovered. the line was replaced. i have the old line. this is a light use vehicle and if i had this failure, there are probably many others.

Had occasionally heard a sound outside the vehicle like a hose letting off air ... figured it was the compressor. today, i got in the vehicle and backed out of my garage and heard a steady flow of air that sometimes rose and fell in pitch. i determined that a flexible housing covering the linkage from the brake pedal to the master cylinder vacuum booster had burst open after what appears to be shearing from continual wear on the rubber boot itself. i do not know what this is caused by or how serious it is. i still have brakes, but under what conditions i do not know. the shearing of this rubber by the mechanism itself appears to be something that could be in common with any grand cherokee. please let me know what your find out. *jb
