Hvac doesn't change temperature. blender doors are broken. found out it's a common problem in 99-04 jeep grand cherokees and they've updated the parts to replace. problem is, labor costs around $1500 to fix the hvac. there should be a recall for this as i can't drive in the winter without heat, won't be able to see while driving without a defroster!!!

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited w/42,000 miles. yes . not a typo . 42,000, orignal owner & scared to death to drive this suv. i have alot of the already problems, that have been reported. had to pay many, w/my own cash. this suv schould have came in 1 color lemon yellow. it is an accident watng to happen. the recent problem is now i have no a/c-heat or defroster. ths is due, to failure of the automatic temp control to work. i t started 1st by intermittently working, till now not working at all, this is just 1 more, to the list , of many other problems. i don't think that it is an coincidence that all my issue have happenned, almost exactly, in the order, of all the other complaints. i can't undestand how a company can get away w/this. this new problem can cost up to $2000, if it is, like previous reported problems, happens to be the blend doors. as a handicapped driver i drive less than 4,000 miles a year. this is the only auto i drive, thus the many, many probs have yet to raise thier head. i have read almost all complaints(too many to read) this suv schould be a total recall, i have never heard more complaints & problems, in my life, for any automobile. this suv schould be studied & reseached, on how not to build an automobile. just read the many complaints here & on the internet. we are not making this stuff up. i don't know how they stayed in business as long as they did. we, the taxpayers, bailed them out. who is bailing out all the owners, of this death-trap? if that is not absurd enuff, many problems could have been repaired, by jeep & still can. what is the purpose, of nhsta, if not to intervene? you have all the complaints. hundreds of them. you have them posted, yet, we taxpayers/owners safety, has been at risk ever since this suv was driven out of the showroom. how did you not make a recall on the rotor/brakes issue which was reported at 3,000 miles? i am so frustrated. is braking problems not a safety issue? please, help us! *tr

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee and i noticed that my a/c blows mildly cold air. i recharged it thinking that it needed freon but that wasn't the case. this winter i noticed that my heat was not as hot as it should be. new england winters can get into the single digits and the lack of heat can make it almost impossible to defrost the windshield, making visibility very poor. after doing research on the web, i found out that my problem is all too common with jeep cherokee owners. it seems that jeeps have faulty blend doors made of cheap plastic and they almost all break. the repair requires removal of most of the dashboard and can lead to estimates leading anywhere between $1,000-$1,800. daimler chrysler is aware of the problem with the faulty devices and fails to accept the responsibility and post a recall on this issue. *tr

I noticed that my air flow through the a/c and heater was not working - no air flow. it seems permanent - no air flow. i can hear the fan, but no flow of air - no matter what setting (defrost, floor, front side). what is worse, when my windshield fogs up, i have no visibility due to no windshield blower flow. i have not fixed it since it seems to be a widespread problem inherent with the jeep design, and i believe jeep should fix it. *tr

1999 jeep grand cherokee has cold air blowing out on the drivers side and dash board but has hot air blowing out on passenger floor side. i cannot defrost my windshield and this has caused me to pullover while driving du to loss of visibility. i performed various test and found that when testing the azc the fault codes i get are 47 = left temperature door not responding and 54 = left temperature door travel too large. after reviewing several sites and talking with a few mechanics it seems to be that the blend doors are broken. i cannot believe how many failures about this i have read and there is no resolution. this is something that is a safety hazard especially here in the northeast. i am also a firefighter and in the middle of the night when i am called to a fire, accident with someone trapped, or some other emergency, i expect my vehicle to work properly and at the least provide heat to defrost for visibility. i cannot understand why this has not been addressed and why it is not considered a serious failure. in these times of poor economy you would expect corporations to treat loyal jeep owners with consideration and address their issues. i would like an answer as to why this has not been addressed and what is required to repair it. i am also sick to hear that dealers are charging over $1000 to fix a design flaw. i would hope you consider this an important issue because i consider my defroster important when i respond to rescue someone out of a burning building or cut them out of a tangled vehicle. time and life is of the essence to save and i don

I have a 99 grand cherokee and all of a sudden one day last march. the passenger side air started to blow out cold air and the driver side was blowing out cold. the temperature was both on 80. now this winter. you can not get the heat to switch from the front vents to the floor or defrost. *tr

I own a 99 jeep grand cherokee limited, and as i have come to find out my problem is all too common. in the middle of a freezing nebraska winter the heat stopped working! not only is did my heater core go out, the apparently the blend door is also not functioning correctly. the combination of problems is likely to cost well over a thousand dollars to fix! after researching and finding out how common this problem is . . .i've decided i'll never buy a jeep again! the of people this is happening to is unacceptable and something needs to happen otherwise i would advice every jeep owner to get rid of their car before 75,00 miles. the problem can become dangerous because the defrost/defog function is completely gone when this happens, reducing or eliminating visibility. *tr

Heat and air worked fine. in october on a cold night i decided to use my heat and it blew cold air! this happens everytime i go to use my heat. it doesn't matter which vent it is blowing from the heat comes out cold. has not fixed yet due to repair costs equaling over $1000.00 and i cannot afford that at the time. guess i will just have to drive around in -8 temperatures with ice on the inside of my windshield..thanks jeep *tr

I have had an issue with the heating and cooling unit on the dual zone control in the past, about 4,500 miles ago, and took it into the dealership to have them fix the problem. i took it into get repaired because it was not fogging or defrosting my vehicles windshield and i was unable to see during the winter when i was driving up to colorado and had to stop every few minutes to wipe off the condensation. this was a terrifying event since it was snowing on the highway i was traveling on and there were vehicles trying to control their own vehicles which i could not see. at one point when i needed to pull the vehicle over and wipe off the condensation and unfreeze the windshield wipers from the windshield i was unable to see the railing and hit it, thankfully i was only going about 5 mph but i still banged up my bumper a little but at least i didn't die. this is an issue that is obviously due to the poor design of the vehicle since it has now gone out again in less than 5,000 miles. i cannot believe that daimler chrysler has not recalled the parts that cause this problem and are waiting for someone to die from this design before they will do the right thing and recall. it costs more than $800 to repair the first time and i cannot afford to fix this issue just so that i can see the cars that are on the road and the lines to stay in my lane. please help! *tr

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited's heater control unit has become faulty. the heat does not work on any setting, and outside cold air comes into the cabin with zero control. this is making visibility very poor due to lack of defrosting the front windshield. i brought it to the dealer, and they informed me that it was due to a poor design from the factory. they told me that it was going to cost $1,766.00 plus tax to repair this problem. i feel that there should be a recall issued to fix this problem seeing it becomes a safety risk due to poor visibility. *tr

Blend doors on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee failed, making it impossible to see in most weather (instant fogged windshield w/no way to defog) and blowing cold air instead of hot. this cost over $1000 to fix, as removal and replacement of the doors is very time-consuming (whole dash must be removed). *tr

I ran into what i thought was a simple heating problem with my 1999 grand cherokee. one day while driving down the road, my car simply stopped blowing hot air. after going to the dealership and spending nearly $600 to have some sort of solenoid replaced, i realize after pulling out of the lot that only my passenger side will blow hot air. i called the dealership back, and they told me that it was a problem with the blend doors, and will likely cost between $1,000 and $1,500 to fix. the repair requires a complete disassembly of the dash and steering column (around 10-12 hours for a full repair, according to the shop). i began to look around online to see what else could be done. to my surprise, nearly every jeep message board was flooded with posts about this exact problem. the engineering of the part virtually ensures that it will fail; the calibration phase (every 20 or so start-ups) forces the plastic part to its limits and eventually breaks. every dealership or auto repair shop that i contacted said that virtually every 1999 and newer grand cherokee has, or will have, this problem. the issue isn't paying for car repair; every car has problems that we as consumers will need pay to get fixed. the problem is that the engineering of this part causes it to fail, and now i'm stuck not being able to defrost my windshield in the winter, or now in springtime when it rains. there is no doubt in my mind that this has already, or will cause in the future, accidents from people not being able to see. many people, including myself, would rather drive down the road while wiping the windshield with a rag... than pay $1,500 to get it fixed. for many people, spending that $1,500 isn't even an option. *tr

The heating / cooling system in my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited stopped working. now it currently only blows hot air from one vent (driver's side, mid-level). every other vent in the vehicle blows only cold air. the air conditioning system does not work whatsoever. neither of the temperature control switches work (for passenger / driver side). i have read on the internet that this seems to be quite a problem for this model jeep. i have gotten quotes to repair the problem and it will cost over $1000. i have done nothing since it is quite expensive and will leave me without my vehicle for some time. the heating / cooling system never works at all. *tr

Ac blend doors don't work causing my heat/ac to only work on have the car at a time. in the winter my defroster is only able to defrost half my windshield and the other side has ice cold air coming out the vent witch makes it unable to defrost and causes me to drive with half a defrosted windshield. so half the car gets heat the other half gets ac all winter long no matter what setting you put the system on, this will eventually cause a accident if not addressed. *tr

Blend actuator doors are stuck open on the passenger side. that's outside air coming in all the time through the defroster, dash vents, foot wells and the rear passenger side foot area. tough in the winter! had the problem while under warranty, but dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong. now, 2 years later, they say it's the blend doors and maybe the evaporator unit also. they quoted $1700. to pull the dash and repair. this is on our 1999 grand cherokee limited with now 117,000 miles. don't want to go through another winter with cold air coming in, and afraid the entire system will fail. with this economy, also don't have $1,700. to put into the truck either. i believe the dealership was aware of the problem first time around. after learning about the on-line chat rooms regarding jeeps , i see that about 20% of all grand cherokee limited and overland owners are having this problem. chrsyler should step up and fix this! *tr

I am an owner of a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited v8. i have encountered many problems with this vehicle but some have already been resolved under manufacturer's warranty. a couple problems still exist though. one main problem is that my vehicle occasionally stalls out on me at red lights. it idles very slow (@400 rpm) and this is usually when the vehicle fails on me. i'll lose power to the transmission, but all the electrical items will still work, such as the radio and heater. when the engine dies out, the check engine and airbag lights will display. this problem has been brought to the attention of two dealerships but has not yet been resolved. another problem i have is that i will feel a big clunk when i am accelerating, usually when i first start to drive off. the second type of clunk i feel is when i put the vehicle in reverse to drive. i will feel a big bang like somebody had hit me from behind. this will specifically happen during the shift from reverse to drive. the third problem i encounter happens when i have my heater on. i will have the control settings set @80's and the air conditioner will operate. i do not have the setting at defrost mode. it is in regular mode and when i want the heat, the ac plus the heat will trigger. i would greatly appreciate it if these problems were looked into. thank you. *ak

Since date of purchase wipers did not function, air conditioner intermittently fails to blow air for periods up to 30-60 seconds. can occur repeatedly, with only seconds in between. overhead computer system repeatedly sounds alarms that the lift gate is open when it is closed. rear defroster comes on at its own whim, and at times will not turn off unless key is turned off. transmission was replaced. on board panic system (integrated with the keyless entry system) goes off at will, sounding the horn and flashing lights. occurs almost continually when vehicle is locked. the body control module was replaced, numerous attempts at investigating the wiring, replacing connectors and sensors have still left us with the defects. the vehicle is well known in the community because it simply cannot be silenced. we have been told that numerous other 1999 and 2000 models of grand cherokees have had similar problems, especially with respect to the transmission which has caught fire when it failed during driving (as related by a jeep dealer service department) we were lucky my husband noticed a problem before it reached the point of no return. please contact if additional information is needed, will be happy to provide whatever it necessary to begin an investigation into the plague known as the grand cherokee. *ak

Visibility:defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower ... it was suggested that include the prior description but i'm in question. we have had this 1999 jeep grand cherokee in the family for years and the past year the passenger side blows strictly cold air (it has dual air controls) - my nephew owned the jeep prior to our purchasing it from him this past month. he said this has been this way for a while and not sure what to do. in researching the fix, it seems everyone has the same problem and it was suggested to report it to you in hopes that you can help with the fix as it is a costly one from jeep ($1000 - $1500) ... since everyone has this problem it has to be a jeep defect. hopefully you can help us out. *tr

All of the sudden there was no air blowing out of the inside vents, i took it to my mechanic who explained that the blower quit working and the left side heater quit working as well. my mechanic fixed the blower because it was easily accessible and charged me $200 to fix it but not the heater because he explained he will have to remove the whole front dash and will cost a labor a about $500. i contacted the jeep dealership who explained that services will not be covered under the warranty for this issue. i know a lot of jeep owners who have had these same problems. i am afraid chrysler did not equipped the vehicles with high quality blowers and or heaters. a recall on this issue from the manufacturer is needed! *tr

The blower control module is the electronic component responsible for adjusting the fan speed for the hvac on vehicles equipped with the automatic climate control. it is a well known problem that these units fail. it has failed on my vehicle. my own independent mechanic has replaced quite a few of them. the wiring harness and plug that supplies power is not heavy duty enough and it overheats and melts and could cause a fire. it can be further exaggerated if the blower collects debris and draws more current. once it fails the blower will no longer operate. this makes the defroster unavailable, which could create very unsafe driving conditions should the windows fog up. chrysler has a redesigned unit with a new harness so it is obviously a problem they are already aware of. i'm in the process of having the new parts installed and the old parts will be available. here's a write up of how to fix it yourself. http://www.wjjeeps.com/blower_motor.htm *jb

Two problems: 1. the blower motor resistor burnt out and the ac/head fan quit working. it was sparking when i managed to disconnect the wire. luckily, i was stopped and could reach it in time - had i been driving its very possible my vehicle would have burnt up. 2. no heat. entire last winter i was forced to drive 2 hours per day constantly wiping fog off my windshield. i was told by a 'mechanic' it was a clogged heater core so i had to put up with it because i did not have the money to fix it at the time. dangerous and cold, but i had no choice. now i am trying to get my vehicle repaired i start researching and find there are entire web sites devoted solely to these two problems. 1. blower motor resistor shorts out. to properly repair you have to replace the resistor and the dashboard wiring harness... very costly!! $600+ 2. no heat due to bad blend doors. $1200+ 3. both of these appear to affect jeeps 1999-2004 year models how can jeep continue to knowingly sale automobiles with 1 - a fire and safety hazard with the faulty resistor? 2 - a safety hazard with no heat due to faulty blend doors? google it... both of these are very well known problems with these vehicles and are not isolated incidents. please look at these two links provided. they just start to scratch the surface of how bad this problem really is. jeep should be responsible for repairing both of these problems as they are both safety issues and they knew about them prior to the sale, not to mention the cost of repairing these items places an unfair burden on the owner since fair trade would mandate these known and recurring defects should have been disclosed prior to sale. these are not rare or isolated incidents, they are known problems jeep failed to disclose or repair. http://www.wjjeeps.com/blower_motor.htm http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/jeep-grand-cherokee/tserat48371icob68/p6 *tr

This is concerning a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited edition, i am writing due to repeated problems with the defrost control inability to clear or keep clear the windshield. cold outside air blows from the defrost vents, and does not clear the windshield of frost or moisture, or causes moisture to re-freeze. this is caused by the failure of the blend doors in the heating system. this occurs while driving after allowing the vehicle to warm and the windshield to clear. this is a re-occurring problem, the dealers service manager says that all wj series jeep grand cherokees with the dual climate control will have this problem and will cost between $1200 and $1800 to repair and that the repair is not permanent, just a fix until the parts breaks again. at this time this has not been repaired at the advice of the service mgr of my jeep dealer, he recommended filing this complaint as he says there should be a recall on this issue. *jb

My vehicle has the exact same problem as another vehicle manufactured by the same company (daimler chrysler), that vehicle is a 2002 dodge ram, the nhtsa campaign id number is 03v078000. on my vehicle the connection for the blower motor controller is undersized, with heat from the electrical current the connector loosens and causes the blower motor to cut out, it also causes melting to the blower motor controller itself and the electrical connections. for the mentioned recall daimler chrysler installs a wiring harness overlay, the solution to my problem is the same, they make a wiring harness overlay, the problem however is that the heat from the electrical current damages the blower motor controllers housing and electrical connections, which means that this part needs to be replaced as well in order to correct the problem. the consequences to this failure is that the blower motor becomes inoperable and during times when the defrost is necessary such as cold weather, the blower motor can cut out and reduce visibility. if you read my complaint you'll see it's the exact same problem as the recall i've mentioned. i have researched and investigated this situation thoroughly and am sure it's the same. i only found out about the other recall because i was explaining the problem to my brother who owns a 2002 dodge ram and he told me it sounded exactly the same as his problem that was a recall, so you can see that it clearly is the same problem. *nm

All of the windows in this jeep have stopped working over time. the first time was jan. 27, 2000 (shortly after purchase) rht front window stopped working and regulator was replaced. on april 28, 2000 the passenger front window stopped working and regulator replaced. on october 6, 2000 the passenger front door window stopped working again and the regulator was replaced again. on june 26, 2001 the driver front window and the passenger rear window stopped working and the regulators were replaced. finally on june 4, 2002 the drivers rear window has stopped working. this time the dealership says that the jeep is out of warranty and wants to charge to $217.00 to replace the regulator. the jeep was covered on the other previous instances. i feel that there is an ongoing problem with the windows in this vehicle. i am afraid that one day all of the windows will fail on it making it impossible to get out of this vehicle if i am in an accident or other incidence.*ak

What a lemon! we are averaging $2000/year in repairs. power windows that stop working, water pump breaks, brake rotors need replacing before brakes wear out, leaking differential, transmission, and now we're told by dealer service department we need a new transfer case. whoever designed/built/sold this vehicle doesn't have much pride in their workmanship.

I will be stopped at a light or in traffic when all of a sudden the rpm's will become very erratic. the needle will jump up and down from 700 to 200 to 0 etc. the vehicle has stalled on several occasions in the middle of traffic almost causing a rear end collision. the problem only happens when the car is in drive, with foot on the brake. been to dealership several times. they have connected a chrysler co-pilot to monitor and record problem. have recorded problem several times. currently waiting for a response. i do know of 3 other people with 1999 grand cherokees that have the same problem. since the vehicle does stall out in the middle of traffic, it does represent a safety issue. since this obviously is not exclusive to me, chrysler needs to fix the problem immediately, or take back the vehicle. again this is a brand new jeep. for the record, i have had other defects with this vehicle, although minor compared to this one. defects include rattles, window motor failures etc.

I bought two jeep grand cherokee vehicles in april of '99. in both vehicles, the window regulators have stopped working. i can't roll-down the windows, and the problem can't be fixed immediately, because the parts are on a national back-order list, so other jeep owners must be experiencing similar problems.

Our 99 jeep grand cherokee is 4 months old and is nothing but trouble; the transfer case was replaced, the car makes a grinding noise at highway speeds and the dealer thought the replacement of the transfer case would solve the problem. it didn't however. furthermore the gear oil had to be replaced because the car would buck and even stall sometimes when i would make tight turn. furthermore the transmission is sometimes clunking. our power window needs a new motor. the car keeps on pulling to the right and that still hasn't been fixed. we have been very disappointed and wish the lemon law would be a little bit more protective of consumers than car dealers and manufacturers. *ak

*tr

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited. it has the self diagnostic tool build into the dual zone temperature control. i used the diagnostic tool to evaluate the problems that i was having with my heating and cooling unit of the cabin and got numerous error codes. i have approximately 81,000 miles currently. the major issue that i am having is that i cannot get my unit to blow hot or cold air into the cabin although it will turn on. i took my vehicle into the local daimler chrysler dealership and they charged me a price for fixing this issue which at the time i thought was fair. this last dealership repair was about 3,000 miles ago. after the repair the vehicles heating and cooling unit operated properly until recently. now the system does not operate properly anymore and will turn on but will not blow out any air at all...ever. i have contacted the dealership to find out what the issue is and they stated that they have had a lot of vehicles that have this exact issues and need to replace the original equipment again. after looking online i found a forum on jeepsunlimited.com that has about 25 pages of people with the same complaint. at this time i am in agreement that this is an issue that is related to the original design from daimler chrysler company and needs to be either addressed as a recall or as a lawsuit from the public that has been sold these vehicles. this repair cost me over $800 last time i took it to the dealership and was not even something that could be fixed due to other errors on behalf of daimler chrysler's original design. i am incredibly frustrated and do not know what else to do since repairs of $1,000 every 3,000 miles is out of the question and i am simply driving around with out heat, snow falling, and a pregnant wife! if something happens i will sue. the original parts are not available for review. please contact me if there are any questions and i look forward to some type of resolution to this issue. thank you. *tr

The wiper blades stiffen and lose contact with the windshield, except at the ends, at temperatures below 30 f. the blades will not even clear water from the windshield. stopping and cleaning the blades only works for a few minutes. in order to see where you are going, you must look through the bottom of the windshield. i have been driving in identical winter conditions for over 20 years with subarus and my other jeep and have only experienced this type of problem under extreme conditions. i feel that this is a serious safety problem that jeep needs to address. the dealer says that nothing can be done unless they have a tsb. *mjs
