Daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (06v199) of certain jeep grand cherokee vehicles to replace the engine's electric motor driven cooling fan. the 182,875 vehicles included in the recall are model year (my) 2002 equipped with 4.0 liter (six cylinder) engines manufactured from february 4, 2002 through june 17, 2002; and my 2000 equipped with either the 4.0 liter (six cylinder) or the 4.7 liter (eight cylinder) engine manufactured from january 31, 2000 through june 12, 2000.dcc noted that their analysis of failed parts showed evidence of brittle fracture of the fan blade.dcc further stated, poor bonding between the resin material and the glass fibers was observed, which may be attributed to the injection molding process. since the root cause of fan failure could not be conclusively identified dcc decided the recall scope would be determined by the build date range of the complaint vehicles.there were 48 reports for my 2000, and 196 for my 2002.odi will continue to monitor this issue for reports on vehicles outside of the recall scope.

My wife and i purchased a 2000 jeep grand cherokee from the dealership. about two years ago the 4.0 liter 6 cylinder engine started using coolant and causing the coolant light to alarm. the oil pressure would drop to 0 and sound the check gauges alarm. we took the car to the mechanic shop for costly repairs and troubleshooting. they replaced the water pump, couldn't find any leaks, and replaced the oil pump and rear main seal. they checked the bearing clearances and found them within tolerance. the car is still using one to two pints of coolant every three days and the oil continues to drop to 0 after warm-up. we replace the 4 wheel disc brakes and rotors every two years. the hood gas shocks won't hold the hood up and the shocks cost $150 a pair form the dealer and only last one year. we to have electric door locks that screech and don't lock the doors as well as rear light problems that work off and on. the emissions are much higher than normal on our recent smog test. this is an indication that the #3 and 4 cylinder is using the mysterious antifreeze loss. as a retired mechanical engineer i also believe the oil problem to be related. my wife has the grand cherokee and i purchased a tj wrangler new in 2000. i'm concerned this vehicle will develop the same problems having the same engine. we have invested over $50 thousand in these two cars. we need your help to help us offset this burden. *tr

I have a 2000 grand cherokee jeep limited that i purchased new. it was fairly ok until 2003 at about 60k miles. that's when the radiator starting leaking. it was replaced in 2003 and annually thereafter (5 replacements) with the last one in march 2007. additionally, i have had several water pumps plus replacing the heater core. the dealer says they can't find the cause for the radiators to continue to breakdown every year with less than 10k and under 12 months each time. i believe the jeep has an inherent flaw in the cooling system design. chrysler continues to ignore the problem and will not pay for any future radiators which almost assuredly will breakdown again in the near future. *jb

Driving with my daughters to the beach when suddenly my steering wheel froze as i was along a winding road. towed truck to a mechanic who diagnosed that the gear box was broken at that point he repaired the gear box. approximately 1 week later the same exact thing except that the truck caught fire, again towed the truck back to mechanic who replaced the gear box. i thought i was going to die when i experienced my steering wheel freeze and the fire was extinguished quickly so minimal damage was suffered. in 1 year that i own this vehicle the radiator has also needed to be repaired, the locks on my driver door stopped working, the fan in the cooling system has stopped working, i have been told that the muffler was improperly installed. i never expected so many faults or so much money spent in repairs on a so called certified used vehicle. *nm

I bought this vehicle less than 4 months ago and it began leaking antifreeze within the first month. i brought it to crest lincoln where i bought it for an oil change and asked them to look at why the antifreeze was leaking. they informed me that due to the car being 3 weeks over the warranty, if something was indeed wrong they could not help me unless i paid out of pocket charges. i then brought the car to a repair shop and they told me that it could be the thermostat. this did not solve the problem even though the car was not over heating. the problem: the car is still leaking in more than one place. today it was a continual leak. i called the dealer and i called chrysler and they will not repair the vehicle at their own cost. the engine is possibly cracked but they will charge me $400 to do the diagnostic and i will not only have to pay out of pocket for that but also the total cost of the repair until i can settle this with chrysler or the dealer. this price was estimated around $6000.00. the car is only 3 years old with less than 36,000 miles on it.

Bought 2000 jeep grand cherokee new. now has 57000 miles on it. two main problems now exist: 1. i had to have brakes replaced after 25000 miles. they now need replaced again. extreme vehicle shaking and vibration thru the steering wheel. appears to be common prob experienced by many based on the volume of complaints i am seeing. dealer will not assist. chrysler rep will not assist. 2. experienced low oil pressure reading. took car in for analysis and they tell me engine needs replaced. gunk buildup in engine they say is cause of problem. oil has been changed regularly. i cannot prove record of all oil changes, but it has been changed at reputable service centers. engine $5600. chrysler district unwilling to assist. i am frustrated at their lack of communication, attitudes, and lack of quality in this vehicle. they try to make you feel like a common criminal and are unwilling to stand behind their product. this vehicle cost about $35,000 and it is far from being worth the value.*ak

I purchased my 2000 jeep grand cherokee in 1999. i have been in and out of the dealer service for repeat major problems. my tire squeaked loudly while driving and after a year of not finding the problem, and fixing what they thought was the problem the left front wheel bearing was replaced and solved that problem. during the problem with the squeak they informed me that the transfer case had a problem and the solution was to drain and refill the 4wd transfer case fluid, i had them complete the service. also during my cargo door would not open neither would the window, they replaced the latch lift. the next problem was that i was noticing smoke coming from underneath my hood. i brought that to their attention and they notice a fluid leak and had to replace my cylinder head gasket. the smoke was still there after that effort and now my transmission has went out. i need an overhaul transmission that will cost $1800.00 because now it's out of warranty. when i called the dealership they made it seem as if i did not take care of my vehicle. when my jeep needs servicing i always went to the dealership (5 star) so they can help me take care of my investment. any needed repair that was requested i had done. my jeep only has 57,000 miles on it. the crysler company has most definitely lost a customer.*ak

The radiator fan blades on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee fractured and separated while the motor was running. this is consistent with nhtsa campaign id number: 06v199000 and corresponding daimlerchrysler recall no. f25, however, this recall was only for vehicles built from january 31, 2000 through june 12, 2000. my jeep was constructed in december of 1999 so my fan is not included in this recall. i'd like clarification on why model year 2000 jeep grand cherokee's that were built in december of 1999 are not included in the recall even thought the engineering and construction of the recalled item and corresponding fracture and separation of the radiator fan are the same. *tr

Jeep 2000 grand cherokee laredo inline 6cyl i recently experienced low coolant and oil pressure problems. i had the water pump replaced, the oil sensor switch replaced, and the oil pump replaced. the repairs were done individually in that order. i am still experiencing low coolant although the car does not seem to overheat. i recently had a pressure test and there were no leaks. when the car is started in the morning i have the proper oil pressure. as soon as the car warms up the oil pressure fluctuates and eventually activates the alert indicator (bell sound). the engine sounds fine and there are no performance problems. i brought the car back to the service station that did the repairs. the mechanic suggested that i use a heavier oil for the pressure problem. i will let you know the results. this may be the last attempt before an engine overhaul. jeep should have a recall for these problems. *tr

Engine overheating sporadically starting about 3 yrs. ago. we replaced water pump per dealer but did not solve problem. dealer said to replace hidden temperature relay - we did that. in meantime engine over heated cracking cylinder head between #3&4 cylinder causing hardships. we still now have the loss of coolant problem and loss of oil pressure ongoing. needing oil pump change. ongoing problems with all of this same problem oil pressure drops off & on to zero. coolant still leaks into engine. *tr

My car has major problems and i can't afford to fix, then i find the problem that i have is due to the automaker's problem because the car is on recalls for the problems i am having. i received no notices on any recall, and when i got on the web-site to check for recalls there are as many as 10 major problems with my car and jeep. some could cause me to crash or even explode while driving. where are my recall notices? *tr

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo that has multiple problems that many people have. they are not coincidental. i have the mysterious coolant loss that requires me to fill my jeep with coolant every three days. several mechanics have not found in leaks. however in hopes of fixing the problem, i had my water pump replaced, two days later....my low coolant indicator pops up. then my oil pressure is ridiculous going from zero to max and then making my check gauges light come on. had the oil pressure sensor replaced because it was supposedly leaking....still having my oil pressure gauge go crazy. my a/c has ceased working as well and now the passenger rear door lock doesn't want to cooperate. i am very upset to the fact that hundreds of people are having the same problems with the 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. this vehicle must be recalled! this is a link to a forum of hundreds of people having the same issues. http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_78839_2.html. *tr

My 2000 jeep cherokee's electric fan broke and cut into the radiator. i did a search for recalls and there is a recall for this fan, but here is the real problem: the coolant fan relay switch module fails and the fan doesn't properly cool the engine, then the poorly designed head cracks between the #3 and #4 head and all the coolant seeps into the cylinder area where the coolant is burned. then without proper cooling, it destroys the engine. (recall to replace bad heads). *tr

Just disgusted with the number of repairs i have needed to make to this vehicle. in the last six years the following repairs have been done: brakes replaced 3 times and need to be done again door window motor cooling fan, radiator evaporator coils hood lifters-hood will not stay up drivers door clunks starter compressor leaking axle seals and now i have a cracked head on the engine. the jeep just failed out of the blue. glad i was close to home. this vehicle is a lemon. buy american again--most likely not. are our american vehicles being built with inferior parts? or are they programmed to be obsolete within a few years? *nm

The original fan on our 2000 jeep grand cherokee explode on us while on the road, broke into many pieces and damaged the shroud. we bought an after market fan to fix the problem. end of june 2006 we took it to allen samuels chrysler jeep dealer to have it permanently fixed since it acted like there was still a problem. we paid almost $1000. right before thanksgiving we got a recall notice in the mail from chrysler on the fan being recalled and for the people that already had the problem fixed to send in the original receipt for reimbursement. so we did mail it all in and we got a phone call from chrysler denying the claim since hans at allen samuels chrysler jeep told them the problem was caused by the after market fan. so i called hans to ask him why he told chrysler it was caused by the after market fan if we originally came in with the blown up original fan and a broken shroud and thermostat. he said in their system it states that they replaced the after market fan because it was not blowing enough air. well that is wrong, but unfortunately hans was not willing to be helpful and take care of the matter. he also told me he spoke with my husband when we brought the car in and told him we have to have a new radiator to keep the car from over heating and he was there when the technician told my husband the same thing. the problem is, i was there too and that is not what they told us. about the after market fan, it was replaced because the original fan exploded, if that would not have happened we would have never needed an after market fan and we would not be in this situation, but chrysler and hans don't see it that way. i believe if there is a recall on a part and we already had it happen to us and we paid out of pocket we should get our money back. we also had a steel bracket on the driver seat brake and chrysler does not see it as a safety hazard therefore they will not replace it. *jb

Tie rods, wheel bearings, ball joints, fan clutch, shorted engine compartment wiring harness, fuel pump assembly all gone wrong from time of purchase; january 2000/brand new to sept. 2006...some pd. under warranty others after 2004 not; even though the defects usually do not happen to a jeep grand cherokee/fully loaded. the last straw was the ball joints; we asked if some form of recall should of been done and then asked for a reimbursement because my wife's' 2004 jeep liberty limited had a recall on it's ball joints/lower ones so after having mine replaced last friday 9/15/2006 we asked about the grand cherokee and it's ball joints; we also updated on all the defects we've had to correct and wondered if it wasn't a expensive lemon...$35,000.00 is what i paid. we called chrysler main customer service and was only told were sorry, the age of the jeep and past warranty...what does that have to do with all the past defects since 2000 and the fact we tried their customer service in 2002 and got no where again. no matter the age of the vehicle...safety is safety. and if ball joints go bad for no reason and have to be replaced then, it should go as a safety concern for all their vehicles. *jb

On june 10, 2006 my jeep grand cherokee laredo 2000 was being driven when there was a loud pop under the hood. upon inspection the fan and shattered and put holes in the radiator, hoses, shroud, and other places on the car. my husband did all the repairs and i still have all the old parts. after we had replaced the fan, radiator and hoses we found out about the recall in the local paper. upon calling daimler chrysler i was told that my vehicle was not included in the recall and that because i had not taken my jeep to a dealer for repair i would not be able to get reimbursed for these expenses. *nm

I am the owner of a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. on thursday august 10, 2006, my electric motor driven cooling fan exploded, causing damage to my shroud and puncturing two holes in my radiator. this has done significant damage to my car. it is undriveable until all of these components are replaced. i contacted daimler chrysler's 800 number and was told that there was not a recall on this part. i called my local jeep dealer and was told the same. i have pulled up letters from the director of vehicle compliance and safety affairs from daimler chrysler stating there will be a recall to replace all cooling fans, and equipment. i am very upset over how i was treated at dce over this matter. there was no assistance given other than, to call back later on if i received a letter. these parts are very expensive, and i feel that if there is a recall,....... then this matter should be taken care of, and not done so out of my pocket. *nm

Cooling fan relay module failure in 2000 jeep grand cherokee this relay is a persistent source of failure in this vehicle. in 90k miles i am on my 3rd and the dealer parts and service know this problem with great familiarity. it appears this component has inadequate cooling properties. either it is undersized for the loader requires a larger heat sink to better dissipate heat. what make its a bigger problem is the location under the battery tray requires significant disassembly to access replacement. do i have any recourse with the manufacturer? *jb

Driving down the freeway and it felt like i ran over something. my wife noticed black pieces hitting the pavement behind us. drove the rest of the way home and when i pulled in the driveway i saw steam coming from under my hood. i let it cool and found out that the cooling fan was in multiple pieces. one piece was jammed between the radiator shroud and the radiator. i also noticed that my radiator was leaking from two spots where it looked like the fan parts hit the radiator. looked on the internet and found nhtsa campaign id number : 06v199000. called jeep corp office and they didn't know of the recall and would not offer to fix since i had 86k miles. said i could be reimbursed if my jeep s/n was included in the recall and that i would receive a post card. the jeep dealer was out of my budget to repair so i bought a new fan assembly and a new radiator and replaced it my self. i was just lucky because i was on vacation and planned to do a tune up on the jeep the next day. *jb

We purchased a new $41,000. 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited. after one season the heat on the passenger side failed to produce any heat, only cold air. we were traveling to michigan when we discovered this problem. my wife was not happy traveling with a blanket over her entire body for our 2500 miles trip. the dealer fixed the problem the first year. however, the following year, the same thing happened again. there has been many attempts to fix the problem each year since 2002. they were trying to fix the problem with ut taking the dashboard apart, it would cost them too much to do that., we kept taking the vehicle back to the dealership(for the same problem 10 times. i have a history report of all maintenance & repairs. from the winter of 2002 up until this winter 2005 we have had the same chronic problem with the heat. its was always on the passenger's side. the dealer finally said the problem was the mixing doors of the heating system, and it will cost $800 to fix. we had been charged a $100 deductible each time the dealer said it was fixed. now that they have put us off all this time, our 5 year extended warranty has expired. we didn't need heat in october, so we didn't know there was the problem again this year. we only use the heat four to five months of the year. when winter comes around we expect a $40,000 car to have heat. i am 52 years old, owned many cars, and never had any problems with the heating system like i do with this car. how can some mechanisms break in that short of time, year after year unless its a produce defect or the dealer does not know how the fix the problem properly? the sales person said he has seen other grand cherokees with similar problems. *ak

I recently became aware of a serious defect in the cooling fan of my jeep grand cherokee. on 11/11/05, i was driving approximately 30 mph when i unexpectedly heard a loud explosion. i immediately pulled over and noticed a significant amount of fluid draining from my car. upon further inspection under the hood, i discovered the cooling fan had exploded into many pieces, which subsequently damaged my radiator causing the leak of coolant. this was a sudden malfunction without any sort of warning, which could potentially have serious consequences such as severe injury and even death. fortunately, i was able to pull off the road without incidence. while researching online, i discovered that not only is this a common problem, but that chrysler is fully aware of this flaw in their vehicle but has yet to issue a recall. i request a reimbursement from chrysler for all damage sustained to my vehicle due to this malfunction. i also believe it is imperative that this defect be investigated and a recall to be issued. safety is of the utmost importance and this is negligence on the part of chrysler. *jb

The engine shuts down and the electrical system to start the car is shutdown while driving. i have had this happen to me numerous times and have not been able to find the resolution to it. it's a tremendous safety concern because it has happened to me while driving on several highways. the car attempts to turn over while trying to start it however none of the gauges are responding to the key in the ignition during turn over. i have read numerous forums with many people with the same problem. changes have been made to everything from sensor's to pcm ( main computer ) to resolve the problem. in my case the computer system isn't storing any codes with a problem. initially i changed the crank shaft position sensor because of the code but the problem continues to happen. to make matters worse because the entire system is shut down there is no power steering making it almost impossible to glide over to the shoulder.

*tr

Brakes keep failing. shortly after purchasing the car in 1999 i returned to the dealer complaining about heavy brake pulsation at 30mph. they told me they fixed it but it continued doing it. i kept going back over and over again. the last time i went back was 3 weeks ago, and they again changed the brakes with newly designed brakes which supposedly would have fixed the problem. the dealer said they wouldn't cover the back brakes b/c they had no complaints about it and that i didn't need to change them. i drove away but the car still pulsates heavily as soon as i brake if i am driving over 20mph. furthermore my car's engine broke down completely after 32000 miles or approximately 7 months ago. they told me the engine failed b/c i didn't change the oil for 10,000 miles. the mechanics report stated that there was water in the fuel, but they still told me it was my fault for not changing the oil. i was out of warranty b/c more than 36 months had gone by from the date of purchase. chrysler agreed to substitute the engine and i had to pay $800. i don't understand how a new car, driven for such little mileage (now only 35,000 miles after almost 4 years) can have all these mechanical problems. i believe the breaks are faulty and am not sure how to further deal with the problem. the car dealer keeps telling me it's perfectly safe to drive.*ak

I was driving at about 40-45mph, and suddenly the steering got incredibly stiff. the vehicle had stalled. i managed to pull off to the side of the road and tried to turn it back on. it cranked, but wouldn't turn over. i called jeep, and had it towed back to the dealership. they told us it was the gear on the cam speed sensor. the mechanic showed us what he said was the cam sensor. several of the teeth on the gear were shorn off. we asked to keep the bad part, and they said that was not allowed. i'm afraid the same thing will happen while i am driving on the highway. *ak

This jeep has numerous problems and has been to the dealership for service 4 time and they have failed to repair even 1 of our complaints. all complaints other than the pull to the right have been dismissed with the explanation of can not duplicate. they have tried to repair the pull to the right but it only got worse. we were told by a repair tech. that it needed a new part to correct the pulling to the right but chrysler has failed to install this needed part. we have requested a repurchase of the jeep under the lemon law but chrysler denied our request stating that the pull to the right is due to road crown and if you hold the steering wheel with a strong to medium grip you don't notice the pull to the right! we have this in writing from the arbitrator that chrysler hired. the dealership and chrysler attempted to conceal some service repair forms that had the loose rear hatch problem and the pull to the right. chrysler stated in letters to the attorney general that we had never brought the rear hatch alarm to the attention of the dealership which was disproved at arbitration but we still never received a copy of the repair sheet even though the dealership has it and provided a copy to the arbitrator. we have parked this jeep due to the increasing severity of problems. we think this jeep is dangerous due to it's numerous defects. we refuse to let anyone ride in the back for months due to the rear hatch (which the district manager for chrysler found was loose at the arbitration hearing by pushing on the bumper and hatch. *ak

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. my wife was picking up my kids, when the car began to shake and then overheated. i took my car the mechanic, who told me that the radiator fan was defective and had to be replaced. he told me that this was a common problem with the grand cherokee. i looked at your website, and discovered that there was a recall on this part, but only for certain vin numbers. i paid $735 dollars to replace the defective part, and chrysler/jeep said they will not reimburse me because of my vin number. they told me to contact the nhtsa to find out why my jeep wasn't covered, since they had no other information for me. i know that the grand cherokee from 1999 to 2004 has the same exact parts and body and i don't understand why my jeep isn't covered under the recall when this is a known problem. *tr
