When headlights are on and you step on brakes all rear lights go out. i have now been cited for this twice and warned 3 times. i have had this issue adressed with 2 local mechanics who thought they fixed but yet again this is broken. i am giving all my hard working money in fees for this issue.

I have had ongoing problems with my brake and tail lights. i have replaced the housing, sockets and bulbs. the bulbs overheat and melt the plastic which causes the lights to malfunction. the tail lights will work sometimes but the brake lights may not work when the tail lights are lit. there have been times when the tail lights don't work and the brake lights do even though they are the same bulb. i have seen other jeeps on the road with the same problem and have seen multiple complaints on internet. i've contacted jeep and they claim to have no knowledge of the problem. *tr

Tl- the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the brake light bulb would overheat the housing and melted the area where the circuit board was located. the failure recurred intermittently on both the passenger and driver sides. the dealer advised the contact that the housing was causing the failure and did not provide a remedy besides replacing the housing, which the contact stated was done twice prior to the recent failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance. the current mileage was 198,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 120,000. kmj

Rear taillights stop working, contacts deteriorate and burn. this is a serious problem because taillights will go out without warning to driver and can cause an accident or the driver to be ticketed by law enforcement for faulty equipment released by jeep. taillights have to be replaced

In 2007, my rear tail lights stopped working. they would not work if the head lights were turned on. however if the head lights were off the rear tail lights were working. there is no warning light that informs you of this failure and so it was not until i was stopped by the police that i was even aware of the problem. i got the rear lights replaced, not knowing then that this was a common problem. however, now three years later, the lights have failed again. same exact problem. no warning lights, it just so happened a family member saw that my lights were out. the replacement parts are expensive and obviously this is a common problem known by jeep/chrysler.

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee.. i have the same as all other 2000 jgc owners are having. been using coolant every few weeks needs to be topped off.. fan was replace due to recall. had to replace fan control under headlight. last year was overheating. replaced water pump/ thermostat. overheating again. just replaced thermostat today. did not fix the problem. transmission has been shifting hard for the past year and a half. i replaced parts in transmission as suggested by dealer. but it did not fix problem..replaced radiator around may of 09 still having cooling problems. i replaced so many sensors that have failed that i cant remember them all. i still have 1 more year of payments on this vehicle.. its hard to make payments when i have been buying so many parts to try to keep this car running. bad door seals, they are too small (short or shrinking) it lets water come in back passenger area. always smells musty inside.. black mold in the rainy season. taillight brake light on one only works part time. replaced 3 door latches. including one on rear hatch. *tr

Rear brake lights continue to fail within 12-20 months time even after the entire tail light is replaced. this has occurred for both rear tail lights in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. we're having to replace both of them every 12-20 months now. the tail light circuit area is known to be a jeep defective, as i now discovered. *tr

The vehicle brake lights keep going out. one goes out, then eventually the other one goes out. we have changed both light assembly and bulbs; they last for a while then, eventually goes out again. this problem is compounded by the inconvenience of being pulled over for the problem multiple times and not to mention a huge safety factor. the expense to replace the light components/and or repair has been in the thousands of dollars over time. the last time we had it in for a repair they changed the harness assembly and the repair shop said that this is a very common problem with jeeps of this era. *tr

Have owned vehicle for 4 years now. have had problems with the heat not working 3 times now and still have problems (spent over $1,000.00 in this alone) the wires connecting to the blow box get to hot and melt the plug & blow box. when it first starts you can wiggle the wires and it will work for a short period of time. ultimately you must replace the plug & blow box. last week i was pulled over getting off the express way and a guy stopped me and told me i had no tail lights or brake lights. again this was another electrical problem. this was very dangerous as i could have been in a serious accident. the tail gate sticks and will not open. *tr
01/09/2005800001
Both tail light assemblies stopped working and was cited by a police officer. replacement was ~$500. rear lift gate lock actuator is broken, so cannot open lift gate. right rear door lock will not allow opening from inside. shift sensor/solenoid has gone bad twice leading to problems with shifting from gears (revs really high before shifting). rotors are constantly becoming warped and brakes have to be readjusted. left blinker no longer works and to fix it, the dealership told me they have to replace this entire engine block for about $800. power window lock no longer works. other than that, car runs great :). *tr

My car has major problems and i can't afford to fix, then i find the problem that i have is due to the automaker's problem because the car is on recalls for the problems i am having. i received no notices on any recall, and when i got on the web-site to check for recalls there are as many as 10 major problems with my car and jeep. some could cause me to crash or even explode while driving. where are my recall notices? *tr
11/24/2008800001
I was on my way home from work and followed by a police officer. he pulled me over to give me a citation for an equipment violation. it appears whenever i hit my brakes my driverside taillight went out instead of illuminating further. i had once been told of this before but everytime i checked they worked (always with my lights off). and i have replaced the bulb a few times. i have now done some testing and it appears the housing is faulty. my mom has an 04 liberty with the same problems as well as my sister in laws 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo. this obviously is a faulty design and needs to be corrected by the manufacturer. i should not have to pay both my ticket and the cost to fix the issue, when it's an issue of faulty manufactured equipment. *tr

Passenger side brake light constantly fails on 2000 model jeep grand cherokee. the part has been service between 5 and 10 times and continues to fail less than 24 hours later. the failure is only noticeable when the head lights are on and the brakes are activated. i have been pulled over by the police twice for this but was able to avoid a ticket by showing the numerous repair receipts and explaining the situation. on one of the occurrences, all rear lighting completely failed except for hazard lights (which i had to use for safety). i don't know if it was related to the original problem since my service provider can't diagnose the problem. the sockets have been replaced numerous times as well as the bulbs. *tr

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited and this is the second that i have worked on and i have noticed that the license plate lights wiring harness seem to melt on the bulbs and i think over time this could become a big risk over time. the harness is very hard to replace and i don't think many people would notice cause of the location. i have been burned by the hot rubber type plastic. this is the third time i have had to replace the lights over the years and every time it just gets worst. once on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo the light hosing was burned. *tr

Brake light issues-when the headlights are on, the brake lights go out from the research i have been doing, the manufacturer is well aware that there is a very widespread problem with these lights. this should be a recall issue, not go to the dealer and pay the ridiculous rates for repair. *tr

Within 2 weeks both rear brake/tail lights stopped working. after checking all fuses and bulbs the it was found to be a faulty ground contact within the light housing due to poor design. the dealership replaced both fixtures at my expense since there has not been a recall. after it happened a second time 2 weeks later i searched the internet finding a repair message board www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_33943_11.html that assisted me in identifying the problem and fixing it permanently. at the end is the procedure identified on the website.feeling that this is a safety issue (driving and fire hazard) i am reporting it to assist others to fix the situation and making dodge/jeep liable for repairs. 1remove the tail light assembly. most of you know how to remove the light assembly if you've changed bulbs, so i won't cover that. 2disconnect the wiring harness by sliding the red locking clip to the side in order to press the side of the male connector and pull apart. 3. once you've got the tail assembly away from the vehicle and on a bench, remove the light socket for the tail/brake light. you will see 3 silver contact points inside the black plastic ring. 2 are grouped together and there is one that is opposite of the 2. the one by itself is the ground; the other two are the contacts for the tail light and brake light. the problem lies with the ground connector. 4 clean all contacts with a q-tip and some sort of contact cleaner. 5. you should notice that the ground contact is depressed into the plastic and the plastic itself is slightly warped down. i was able to use a small pair of needle nose pliers that have a 45 degree angle to press up on the contact from underneath using the opposite lip of the hole as leverage (very carefully).once it had moved up a bit, i was able to wedge a mini-flathead screwdriver in between the metal contact and the plastic to force the contact up even further. once it looked even with the rest, gently reinsert the connector and test. *tr

My driver side tail light will not work when the lights are on at night. it works fine when i press my brake if the lights are not on. i have replaced all bulbs and this still does not correct the problem. now the other side of my vehicle is doing the same thing. i have noticed other jeeps while driving that are having the same problem. *tr

Recently was told, by another motorist who followed me to my driveway, that my brake lights were not working. after checking the usual defects (fuses, bulbs, relays) and not finding any problems i went online and was shocked to find multiple postings related to brake light failures on jeep grand cherokees (mine is a 2000) i was also shocked that despite repeated postings on this problem ,dating back several years, that there is no safety recall for this problem. there is an obvious flaw in the manufacturing of these vehicles that cause brake lights to fail, lights that alert drivers behind you that you are in the process of slowing/stopping. this is not a safety issue? are they waiting for a tragedy to occur before they do something? the fact that people are resorting to homemade remedies rather than pay the excessive cost of replacing a deficient assembly should be troubling. i won't even get into my left turn signal randomly working, also mentioned on the message boards. jeep can consider itself lucky that i was notified of the problem by another motorist, rather than as a result of my vehicle being rear-ended by a driver unaware that i was slowing. my 1 year old daughter would appreciate any help you could offer in addressing this issue. thank you. *tr

Driver's side turn signal and brake light go out when brakes are applied. turn signal works when brake is not applied. brake light typically works when turn signal is not on. have replaced light bulbs on several occasions. obviously not the problem...and after reading some of the complaints i see that this is common and is not related to the bulbs at all so i will stop wasting my money on bulbs! *tr

Taillight grounding issues. with headlights on and pressing the brake, the taillight will go out. there is a major defect with the taillight socket/ground connector in the taillight. i've been pulled over twice for the taillight being out, and in near wrecks because of this faulty piece of hardware. there should be a recall on the taillights to fix the bulb socket/ground issue. *tr

To whom it may concern, i am writing to you about a two serious safety issues with my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. first, the door locks are all starting to fail. without warning they fail to operate and you can not unlock them. this is a serious safety issue if a rescue worker can not get into my vehicle to rescue my children. second the rear brake lights continue to fail intermediately. this could cause a grave accident killing me or my children in my vehicle. i have talk to twenty to thirty jeep owners of this same model and approximate year and they all have the same problems. you have to go to this web site; p://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_33943_4.html . this site lists over 700 complaints, most of them with the door locks and brake light. these parts are obviously defective to have such a nationwide outcry. please investigate these problems and chrysler recall all affected vehicles. thank you for your attention. *ak

Failure of brakes lights, tail lights when checked were due to over heated power strips in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. could cause fire and now have to replace both strips at 200$ each plus 150$ labor-this is all from poor design the light bulbs plug into a black power strip that actually heats up from the bulbs melting the power strip-causing lights to not work-bulbs still work when tested, but due to melting of the black strip the connection doesn't work. dealer does nothing but charge us to fix. consumer paying for bad design, not over usage or any other problem. *jb

I would like to report a defect in 1999- 2001 jeep grand cherokee rear brake lights. 90% of all of the stated models will have failure of the brake lights due to a design flaw in the contact and locking mechanism that keeps the bulb locked in place. i have replaced the bulb and the rear light assembly only to have the same thing happen again. when the headlights are on and the brakes are applied the rear brake light or lights will fail to light up because the defective locking mechanism won't allow the electrical current to make to that particular bulb. this causes an increase risk of these suv's being hit from behind because the lights are not working properly. i have seen numerous other models with the same problem and it is almost laughable. but on a serious note when driving on dark and hilly roads making sure the brake lights are working effectively could save someone from being hurt. *nm

Left brake light on jeep grand cherokee defective... nature of defect: taillights remain operable until foot brake is depressed. when brake is depressed, the left brake light turns off only allowing the right brake light to illuminate. upon release of the foot brake, the tail lights return to operation. attempts to repair this defect have been unsuccessful by me and firestone. i have noticed over twenty other models similar to mine with this same defect.*ak

My 2000 grand jeep cherokee larado has a problem with the electrial system. all the dash lites are on and the speedometer dosnt work. it has been at a jeep dealershjp for almost a month. they cant figure out whats wrong with it. they first replaced a computer modular and i picked it up and the next day i still had the same problems. i took it back and they replaced the samething and told me it was fixed and it happened again after paying out 980.00. i took it back a third time and the company told them to change the ground wires and that didnt fix the problem. they are out of ideas. the right tale lite keeps going out also. so they just put a new one in. this will not fix the problem as we have changed lite bulb several times. the rear windows will no longer work also. they said they changed the fuse and fixed the problem but it wasnt fixed. this could lead to a ticket for not going the speed limit or accident from speeding, also a rear end crash as the tail lite goes off when you apply the brakes.

Driving with my daughters to the beach when suddenly my steering wheel froze as i was along a winding road. towed truck to a mechanic who diagnosed that the gear box was broken at that point he repaired the gear box. approximately 1 week later the same exact thing except that the truck caught fire, again towed the truck back to mechanic who replaced the gear box. i thought i was going to die when i experienced my steering wheel freeze and the fire was extinguished quickly so minimal damage was suffered. in 1 year that i own this vehicle the radiator has also needed to be repaired, the locks on my driver door stopped working, the fan in the cooling system has stopped working, i have been told that the muffler was improperly installed. i never expected so many faults or so much money spent in repairs on a so called certified used vehicle. *nm

2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo - plastic headlight covers deteriorate and become cloudy causing a severe reduction in night time visibility. i took the car to a local chrysler dealer who said they had a special service @ $ 89.95 to restore headlights. service was not successful. i called chrysler for assistance and they said it was not a known service issue. the senior staff agent @ chrysler stated he could not help me. he stated that only recalls are known service issue and chrysler had no knowledge of this problem. i asked why would the dealer offer a specialized service to correct an unknown problem ? he indicated that there no special head lamp restoration services being offered by chrysler and it must be limited to my local dealer. he stated that unless there was a recall by nhtsa there was nothing he could do. i called local chrysler dealer and spoke with service manager and he advised me that this was a long standing problem and chrysler, plus everybody south of the mason dixon line was aware of headlight cover failure issue. *jb

Our 2000 jeep grand cherokee's headlights lens have discolored to the point where the light emitted has been seriously reduced. we have complained to the dealership for the past several years as the lens continue to discolor, and the dealerships response has been we can replaced the headlight assembly at my expense. the headlights started discoloring while the car was under warranty, but the dealership says the headlights are trim therefore not covered under the warranty. the plastic discoloration is a safety issue. as the discoloration progresses the lens restricts the light emissions and therefore the effectiveness. what can you do to help? *jb

EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TAIL LIGHTS

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the contact noticed a shortage that when he depressed the brake pedal with the headlights on, the tail lights shut off. the vehicle had not been taken to an authorized dealership and the contact had not called the manufacturer at the time of the complaint. the vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 130,000. the current mileage was approximately 180,000.

*tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the exterior, tailgate and brake light bulbs were inoperable and must be replaced frequently. the dealer stated that there were frequent tail light failures with this make and model jeep. on april 15, 2007 the tail gate bulb light assembly was replaced. however, itwas currently inoperable. the current and failure mileage were 163,000. *ak

Both tail light assemblies failed (brake lights do not work when the headlights are on). the failure was due to the ground connection of the brake lamps, which is part of the tail light assy. the assy is not strong enough to withstand the brake light bulbs when secured and cracks. this compromises the ground connection and the lights do not function correctly. must replace tail light assy. *nm

There hasn't been a accident in my vehicle but there is a known issue with the driver's side tail light on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. i have noticed all the ones around the same model the same problem exists. this is a problem that has gotten me pulled over once recently with no ticket issued. i had it looked at before it is not the bulb this seems to be a vehicle defect since as i said before it isn't just happening to mine. this could end up causing someone a bad wreck at night if the other light were to blow without you knowing. i have already contacted jeep they blew me off with no help. *jb

EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TURN SIGNAL
03/16/20091
Left turn signal only works on occasion and then will go out totally. the bulbs are ok. in checking jeep owner websites this is apparently a very large problem. i strongly feel that this is a safety issue as if the left turn signal fails the driver behind you does not know your intentions and may run in to you. currently, i have to pass up my turn when it fails and then find a safe place to turnaround and go back to my original turn point. with as many complaints as i have seen on the various websites i believe this is a strong safety issue and needs to be recalled and a permanent repair made. *tr
EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TURN SIGNAL - SWITCH
06/01/20051
Driver's side turn signal and brake light go out when brakes are applied. turn signal works when brake is not applied. brake light typically works when turn signal is not on. have replaced light bulbs on several occasions. obviously not the problem...and after reading some of the complaints i see that this is common and is not related to the bulbs at all so i will stop wasting my money on bulbs! *tr

Complaint regarding problems with 2000 jeep grand cherokee.*mr the vehicle left turn signal would not work. it was later determined that the multi-function switch shorted. the vehicle was repaired but the next day the problem recurred. the dealer then determined that there was an open circuit in the junction box which would cost $760,01 to repair. the consumer refused service hoping to find information on secret warranties. *nm
