Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket airtex electric fuel pumps installed for use as replacement equipment for certain 1997-2004 jeep wrangler; 1997-2001 jeep cherokee; 1997-2004 jeep grand cherokee; and 2000-2003 dodge dakota vehicles. the plastic electrical grommet connectors at the top of the fuel pump module are not compatible with automotive fuels and may degrade causing a potential leak path for fuel.

 I have been getting the run around form customer service at chrysler. i have a jeep grand cherokee,and was planning on buying another. but>>> comments: --------- my 2000 jeep grand cherokee with a 4l engine stalls when turning left if the fuel level in the tank is below 1/4. the vin number is; 1j4g248s8yc343973 this is very dangerous, and could cause a serious accident if i am not able to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. last week i had the local dealer check the vehicle. they said if it were the sensing unit in the gas tank, it would be covered under a recall. they said it was the fuel pump itself, not the sensor, and therefore, i would have to pay around $1000.00 to have the fuel pump replaced. there is nothing wrong with the pump, there is something wrong with the pickup device whenthe tank level drops below 1/4, and this happens over a period of time. i have checked several web sites and found quite a number of people complaining about the same situation. i called chrysler today at 1-800-992-1997 and was told i would have to speak with customer service at 1-800-853-1403. when i called this number i spoke to a representitive and i explained what the problem was and i was told the vehicle was too old for them to do anything about it. i asked to speak to his superior, and was denied a name. when i asked for a name, she asked is anything else i can help you with and told me thanks for calling. this is not an anomaly with my 2000 jeep grand cherokee, according to the sites i visited, this occurs from 95 and on intothe 2000 (s) jeep. the jeep died on my on a busy highway at 1/4 tank and i could not get out of the was of traffic in speeds of 70+mph. i thought i was going to die getting my vehicle to the shoulder of the road. this defect can cause death.

 After having a fuel pump replaced for slow starting, our 2000 jeep grand cherokee began suddenly accellerating for no reason or pattern (but mostly at startup). we took the auto to the local jeep delership in brigham --- where it is now. we told them we were concerned about saftey because of the news coverage of a similar jeep unexpectadly accellerating, jumping a curb and hitting 3 people in slc. in looking at the internet, we found several simlar saftey complaints and that jeep(chrysler/demler) has determined there is not enough of a pattern to address the issue. i can easily see how this problem could have severe and dire results and should be investigated

 Tie rods, wheel bearings, ball joints, fan clutch, shorted engine compartment wiring harness, fuel pump assembly all gone wrong from time of purchase; january 2000/brand new to sept. 2006...some pd. under warranty others after 2004 not; even though the defects usually do not happen to a jeep grand cherokee/fully loaded. the last straw was the ball joints; we asked if some form of recall should of been done and then asked for a reimbursement because my wife's' 2004 jeep liberty limited had a recall on it's ball joints/lower ones so after having mine replaced last friday 9/15/2006 we asked about the grand cherokee and it's ball joints; we also updated on all the defects we've had to correct and wondered if it wasn't a expensive lemon...$35,000.00 is what i paid. we called chrysler main customer service and was only told were sorry, the age of the jeep and past warranty...what does that have to do with all the past defects since 2000 and the fact we tried their customer service in 2002 and got no where again. no matter the age of the vehicle...safety is safety. and if ball joints go bad for no reason and have to be replaced then, it should go as a safety concern for all their vehicles. *jb

 Dt: consumer had to replace five individual brakes in five years. first was the front brakes and rotors, then it was the front brakes and rotors again about seven months later. then almost a year later, had them replaced again. a year after that had the rear brakes and rotors done. finally had the front brakes and rotors again. the mechanic told consumer that the rotors were warped, and that they could barely get them off of the car.*ak when i first noticed this, the brakes started to seem like they were not as effective as they should be. then, about a week later, the car will start to vibrate as i press the brake pedal, and the vibration starts in the brake pedal, and continue to vibrate until the whole car is shaking. it took a long time for the vehicle to crank. the dealer replaced the fuel pump o-ring and shims. *nm

 Jeep grand cherokee fuel pump failure. it is difficult to start. often you have to turn the key on and off 3-5 times before you attempt to crank over the engine. this will build enough pressure in the tank to get it started. the other method you must use is to turn the engine over for 5-10 seconds, and it will never start doing this the first time, but then when you let off the key for 5 seconds, and start again, it will finally crank the engine over. this gets old, and is very difficult to explain when selling the vehicle. to top it off, the fuel pump is in the tank making it very labor intensive to fix. my ase certified mechanic says he has fixed several with this problem, and it is a wonder why this has never been recalled. *ak

 Very hard to start. have to give it a little gas to start. rarely starts on first try. dealer is replacing fuel pump/fuel tank o-ring. fuel tank has to be drained to replace o-ring. o-ring is a $15 dollar part. total bill to replace is $188.90 including tax and labor...ouch!! obviously fuel system is sucking air as a result of faulty o-ring. vehicle only has 38,000 miles. *jb

 This vehicle has been to the dealer 3 times for fuel leaking from the top of the tank after filling it up at the gas station. fuel pump was replaced as well as tank. condition goes away and then returns again 9-12 months after repair. obdviously parts are failing for the same reason. car will lose approx.3 gallons after leaving gas station driving down the road. someone is going to end up dead if they dont correct this. vehicle is out of warranty, but problem is related to the same recall. i cant afford the parts and labor to repair it, leaving me no choice but to drive it.

 Hard starting... fuel pump replaced and problem corrected.. had to pump the gas pedal lightly then turn the key to get the beast started.. and i mean a beast !.. rough idleing engine, noisey diesel like sound from this poorly designed and engineered hunk of metal.. a true embarrsement fro the chrysler engineers.. i must say one thing..they are consistent in designing a good looking vehicle.. but beauty is only skin deep.. for this vehicle is a consumers nightmare.. stay away from these trucks. *ak

 Tl*the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. the contact stated that the vehicle accelerates by itself and makes a strange noise in the transmission box. the vehicle has been in and out of the shop since the date of purchase, with repair costs exceeding $4,000. the dealer stated that even though there are recalls, her vin is not included. the dealer changed her fuel injector system, which caused her to be involved in a crash and also receive speeding tickets. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle shut off on the freeway and almost caused another vehicle to run over her. the contact stated that it takes approximately fifteen minutes to start the vehicle. she took it back to the dealer after the most recent failure and they stated that she would need another fuel pump. she called daimler chrysler who stated that she needed to take her vehicle back to the dealer. chrysler stated that they would replace the parts of her vehicle at no cost. when she took her vehicle back to the dealer, they stated that the representative from chrysler gave her the wrong information and that her vehicle was out of warranty. the contact stated that her vehicle has not been driven since due to the previous crash and failures. the dealer and the contact have all of the repair documentation. a police report was filed for the speeding tickets. the current mileage is 99,000 and failure mileage was 30,000.

 Bought used 2000 jeep grand cherokee from jeep dealer in october 2002. i also purchased an extended warranty from jeep. auguest 2003 the oil pressure gauge dropped. stopped jeep checked oil, all looked fine, restarted, gauge went back to normal. asked dealer about it, no problem they said. on a trip 300 miles from home, oil pressure gauge dropped again, did the same, gauge came back, but dropped again. took to service station who couldn't help. had it towed to dealer. they said gunk build up in the engine, need to repleace at a cost of $9,000. i couldn't prove oil changes ever 3,000 miles (they were done at home), i explained i had only had the jeep one year, too bad. extended warrenty won't help. i had engine replace by a friend with a used engine. july 2004, radiator had to be replaced. i called jeep to ask if they would cover the radiator, they said no, because i couldn't prove i had the radiator flushed at 50,000 miles. i told them i didn't even own the jeep then, but they said too bad.*ak someone needs to get jeep to own up to the problem.
