The door locks on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee are not functioning. all of them make a loud quack noise when i try to unlock or lock the car with the remote entry or from the door. the rear hatch can no longer be opened and both passenger doors have to be unlocked manually. the driver doors have to be locked manually. i have been researching this issue and found hundreds of online blogs about this problem. i contacted my jeep dealership and the refuse to do anything about it. does someone have to be injured or worse in order for jeep to step up and fix their wrong doing? i am hoping you can do something about this issue. thank you

Door lock fails and screeches. drivers side rear passenger door will not open from the outside. it can only be opened by manually releasing the lock from the inside. if we were to be in an accident the passenger in that seat could not be rescued. this is a common problem - i have research this on the internet and there are thousands of complaints about this. i believe jeep should be responsible for replacing these defective locks.

My wife and i purchased a 2000 jeep grand cherokee from the dealership. about two years ago the 4.0 liter 6 cylinder engine started using coolant and causing the coolant light to alarm. the oil pressure would drop to 0 and sound the check gauges alarm. we took the car to the mechanic shop for costly repairs and troubleshooting. they replaced the water pump, couldn't find any leaks, and replaced the oil pump and rear main seal. they checked the bearing clearances and found them within tolerance. the car is still using one to two pints of coolant every three days and the oil continues to drop to 0 after warm-up. we replace the 4 wheel disc brakes and rotors every two years. the hood gas shocks won't hold the hood up and the shocks cost $150 a pair form the dealer and only last one year. we to have electric door locks that screech and don't lock the doors as well as rear light problems that work off and on. the emissions are much higher than normal on our recent smog test. this is an indication that the #3 and 4 cylinder is using the mysterious antifreeze loss. as a retired mechanical engineer i also believe the oil problem to be related. my wife has the grand cherokee and i purchased a tj wrangler new in 2000. i'm concerned this vehicle will develop the same problems having the same engine. we have invested over $50 thousand in these two cars. we need your help to help us offset this burden. *tr

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee.. i have the same as all other 2000 jgc owners are having. been using coolant every few weeks needs to be topped off.. fan was replace due to recall. had to replace fan control under headlight. last year was overheating. replaced water pump/ thermostat. overheating again. just replaced thermostat today. did not fix the problem. transmission has been shifting hard for the past year and a half. i replaced parts in transmission as suggested by dealer. but it did not fix problem..replaced radiator around may of 09 still having cooling problems. i replaced so many sensors that have failed that i cant remember them all. i still have 1 more year of payments on this vehicle.. its hard to make payments when i have been buying so many parts to try to keep this car running. bad door seals, they are too small (short or shrinking) it lets water come in back passenger area. always smells musty inside.. black mold in the rainy season. taillight brake light on one only works part time. replaced 3 door latches. including one on rear hatch. *tr

2000 jeep grand cherokee door actuator. my rear passenger door actuator has broken and the safety problem is that the door will not open at all. a search on the internet reveals that this is a recurring problem with this year and jeep model. jeep is aware of the problem as the actuator is not covered under the warranty. *tr

Have owned vehicle for 4 years now. have had problems with the heat not working 3 times now and still have problems (spent over $1,000.00 in this alone) the wires connecting to the blow box get to hot and melt the plug & blow box. when it first starts you can wiggle the wires and it will work for a short period of time. ultimately you must replace the plug & blow box. last week i was pulled over getting off the express way and a guy stopped me and told me i had no tail lights or brake lights. again this was another electrical problem. this was very dangerous as i could have been in a serious accident. the tail gate sticks and will not open. *tr

Both tail light assemblies stopped working and was cited by a police officer. replacement was ~$500. rear lift gate lock actuator is broken, so cannot open lift gate. right rear door lock will not allow opening from inside. shift sensor/solenoid has gone bad twice leading to problems with shifting from gears (revs really high before shifting). rotors are constantly becoming warped and brakes have to be readjusted. left blinker no longer works and to fix it, the dealership told me they have to replace this entire engine block for about $800. power window lock no longer works. other than that, car runs great :). *tr

2000 jeep grand cherokee heat not working - a common complaint of many jeep owners seeking to file a class-action lawsuit against daimler chrysler jeep. $900 + is beyond absurd to pay to fix this common problem that jeep should have recalled and fixed for free. *tr

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo that has multiple problems that many people have. they are not coincidental. i have the mysterious coolant loss that requires me to fill my jeep with coolant every three days. several mechanics have not found in leaks. however in hopes of fixing the problem, i had my water pump replaced, two days later....my low coolant indicator pops up. then my oil pressure is ridiculous going from zero to max and then making my check gauges light come on. had the oil pressure sensor replaced because it was supposedly leaking....still having my oil pressure gauge go crazy. my a/c has ceased working as well and now the passenger rear door lock doesn't want to cooperate. i am very upset to the fact that hundreds of people are having the same problems with the 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. this vehicle must be recalled! this is a link to a forum of hundreds of people having the same issues. http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_78839_2.html. *tr

I bought a 2000 jeep grand cherokee that had a quacking noise when locking and unlocking in the rear hatch. it finally just quit quacking but along with the silence the mechanism no longer works. now you can't get in the back hatch. i went online to see how to correct this problem only to find out that it's a common occurrence with this model. i feel like this should be a safety recall as there is no way to get in the vehicle should the front or side doors become disabled, say in an accident. there is no way to manually unlock this hatch so you have to rely on this expensive mechanism to do the job. from my research it looks like this has to be replaced several times in the life of the vehicle. *tr

Tl*- the contact stated that the 2000 jeep grand cherokee had a number of problems. the vehicle had problems with the brake rotors since 2005. he had to replace the rotors on 2 occasions since he purchased the vehicle in 2003. the contact had been informed that he needed to have the rotors replaced again. also, the contact has been having problems with the driver's side door locks. when hitting the unlock remote control to unlock the doors the vehicle did not unlock. on some occasions while in the vehicle and trying to unlock the doors from inside the doors did not unlock. a number of times he's had to get out the vehicle from the passenger side door. in addition, tail lights are malfunctioed. the socket that held the bulbs did not work properly. he stated that his brake lights and his reverse lights have failed. he had to glue the plastic sockets together, and on the last time he needed repairs for the socket, he had to rig them up to work. finally the contact had to replace the brake and back up lights. the failure mileage was 80,000, and the current mileage was 100,000. *ak

Safety issue: power door locks inoperable. 2000 jeep grand cherokee. on three (3) seperate occassions, we have had to have three (3) seperate electronic locking systems replaced on three (3) seperate doors/hatches on this vehicle. in all three incidents, the actuator has failed to either lock and/or unlock each individually effected door. on one occassion, we were unable to exit the driver's door at all, thus having to climb over to the passenger's front door to exit. when we contact the manufactuer - each time - they tell us that these are normal wear items. after scanning your sight, i find a total of twenty-one such related complaints for jeep grand cherokees (not all year 2000 models) and four specifically related, year 2000 complaints. to describe the failure: the locking mechanism simply fails to engage and/or disengage and makes a higher pitched, longer than usual, whining sound - as if an electrical motor has failed. the cost of each repair has been equal to or exceeded $150.00 per incident. the following listed incident date (online submission field required) refers only to the latest/most current date of repair. all services for such repairs - each incident - were obtained at capitol grage, a jeep/chrysler dealer, in willimantic, connecicut. the vehicle was originally purchased at a now defunct, jeep dealership in mansfield, connecticut, named champagne jeep/cheverolet.

I have a 2000 jeep gc laredo, and along with many, many other people i have numerous problems. the warped rotors are very dangerous when you have to use your brakes, especially when you have children in the car as i do, also the taillight/brake light issue, that has gotten me pulled over more than once, even though i put a new bulb in it every time. the door lock actuator that is very annoying not to mention my transmission has a shifting problem that i can't do anything about and now my radiator fan will not work so my car will overheat if i am stopped for too long. *jb

Door lock actuator on both driver and passenger(front) side failed. unable to open with key alone. must press keyless entry and also turn key. actuator make grinding/quacking noise when keyless entry used. no repairs attempted as yet. dealer cost is approx $ 250 per door. front rotors wear excessively and quickly. results in violent and dangerous shaking of vehicle when braking from mid-range speeds (40-45 mph). have had rotors polished twice within 8 months. *jb

To whom it may concern, i am writing to you about a two serious safety issues with my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. first, the door locks are all starting to fail. without warning they fail to operate and you can not unlock them. this is a serious safety issue if a rescue worker can not get into my vehicle to rescue my children. second the rear brake lights continue to fail intermediately. this could cause a grave accident killing me or my children in my vehicle. i have talk to twenty to thirty jeep owners of this same model and approximate year and they all have the same problems. you have to go to this web site; p://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_33943_4.html . this site lists over 700 complaints, most of them with the door locks and brake light. these parts are obviously defective to have such a nationwide outcry. please investigate these problems and chrysler recall all affected vehicles. thank you for your attention. *ak

Blend doors on the 2000 jeep grand cherokee climate system were broken at the time of purchase, dealer would not warranty items, claiming it was an isolated problem and not an ongoing problem with grand cherokees, and quoted me $1200 to repair them ,and to expect them to go roughly every 2-3 years. it seeemed to me like a manufacturing issue and customer's should not be liable for covering it. apparently it affected 1999-2004 models, so it was a recent model. *ak

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. since july 2004, there has been problems with the power door lock solenoids, one after the other. as of this reporting, i have had to have all the power lock solenoids replaced, including the back hatch which was replaced the monday prior to this writing. the problems started with the rear door solenoids, left door first, then the right. problems were significant enough with the rear doors that they could not be opened from the outside after they failed - only from the inside by manually unlocking the door (the outside does not have a key slot). i have incurred almost $2,000 in repair costs over the last 30 months replacing the mechanisms. the same repair shop replaced all five units, and all five replacements are currently functioning. they furnished me this website to contact due to the trouble that i have seen.*ak

Driving with my daughters to the beach when suddenly my steering wheel froze as i was along a winding road. towed truck to a mechanic who diagnosed that the gear box was broken at that point he repaired the gear box. approximately 1 week later the same exact thing except that the truck caught fire, again towed the truck back to mechanic who replaced the gear box. i thought i was going to die when i experienced my steering wheel freeze and the fire was extinguished quickly so minimal damage was suffered. in 1 year that i own this vehicle the radiator has also needed to be repaired, the locks on my driver door stopped working, the fan in the cooling system has stopped working, i have been told that the muffler was improperly installed. i never expected so many faults or so much money spent in repairs on a so called certified used vehicle. *nm

Purchased the 2000 jeep grand cherokee in may 2003. i was filling up my car with gas when someone else asked if i ever had problems with my brakes. at that point i didn't. in april 2004, i was driving on the highway and noticed that the car would shake uncontrollably when applying the brakes. didn't shake as bad in city driving. i went to my local car repair shop and they told me the rotors were warped. paid to have the rotors spun. now it's a year later and the car is shaking uncontrollably on the highway. didn't think i was going to be able to stop from hitting the car in front of me. now i have done research on the internet and see that this is a known problem and that it is listed in the technical service bulletin from jeep in 2002. this is my family car! i too have had to replace the 2 of my door motors and 1 of my window motors. i can't believe that there are this many complaints and no one is forcing jeep to put a recall on the rotors.*ak

I have already replaced 3 door lock actuators on my jeep and on my way to replace an already replaced one (driver door) to make the total 4. after looking on your website it looks like this is a very common problem. the response i got from jeep is that my vehicle was out of warranty. this is very frustrating since i have had a multitude of problems from this vehicle. the date of incident is only my most recent. i hope that something gets done and jeep does not get away with faulty equipment in their vehicles.*ak

1.)the door lock actuators on our 2000 jeep grand cherokee are all failing. there are plastic grinding noises that ultimately lead to complete automation failure. .)the consequences of this failure is that it is not possible to lock the vehicle doors, or unlock the effected doors. the consequences are also that the auto door locks are not operational. if the vehicle were in a crash the doors might either be locked closed, or the doors might fly open because they cannot be locked. the auto door lock feature that the grand cherokee has when the vehicle is moving would be rendered useless. 3.)the driver door actuator has been replaced with no help from daimler chrysler. the rear driver side has failed, the rear passenger is about to fail. they have not been replaced yet due to the high cost associated with this repair.*ak

I am writing to express my frustration and anger regarding my 2000 grand cherokee. since this past october, i have experienced a myriad of problems which include the following: 1. a broken ventilation deflector which prevents any air from coming through the ventilation. i spent nearly $100.00 to find out that it is a $37.00 part with $500.00 in labor just to install it. i have children in the car, and the summer heat of 100+ degrees is in my mind, dangerous. 2. all of the passenger doors cannot be opened either manually or remotely from the outside or inside. i received an estimate to replace the lock actuators at a staggering cost of $500.00 per lock! the doors cant be opened from the outside or from the inside without systematically unlocking the doors with the remote, then reaching in from the drivers seat to manually unlock them from the inside. it doesnt take a genius to see that this is a huge safety issue if i happen to get in an accident and the passengers (children) are unable to get out of the vehicle. the jeep mechanic said this is a common occurrence with jeeps for quite a while. 3. the driver side mirror broke when my wife was adjusting the angle of the mirror. there is now no tension to hold the mirror in place. all of these problems began 8 months ago and i am more than a little angry about it, especially when none of these items are covered past the 3 year warranty. all tolled, i am looking at spending somewhere in the range of $3000.00 to fix these problems. right now i am extremely unsatisfied customer, and expect some healthy measure of cooperation from jeep.*ak

On 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo, 3 different doors have failed and you can't open the doors until you replace something called a door actuator. of the 5 doors on the jeep, 3 have failed and 3 new actuators installed. 2 failed while on warranty (12/2002) and the third just failed, 12/2003. *la

I have taken my 2000 grand cherokee twice this year for replacement of the actuator and the door latch. this affected both doors on the passenger side of the vehicle and is now moving to the drivers side. the lock will make an awful sound while locking and unlocking. it will eventually freeze up and neither lock or unlock. each time covered under extended warranty although paid a deductible. the dealer will not replace all at once since they have not gone bad yet. thus far only 3 out of 5 doors are damaged. *la

Tie rods, wheel bearings, ball joints, fan clutch, shorted engine compartment wiring harness, fuel pump assembly all gone wrong from time of purchase; january 2000/brand new to sept. 2006...some pd. under warranty others after 2004 not; even though the defects usually do not happen to a jeep grand cherokee/fully loaded. the last straw was the ball joints; we asked if some form of recall should of been done and then asked for a reimbursement because my wife's' 2004 jeep liberty limited had a recall on it's ball joints/lower ones so after having mine replaced last friday 9/15/2006 we asked about the grand cherokee and it's ball joints; we also updated on all the defects we've had to correct and wondered if it wasn't a expensive lemon...$35,000.00 is what i paid. we called chrysler main customer service and was only told were sorry, the age of the jeep and past warranty...what does that have to do with all the past defects since 2000 and the fact we tried their customer service in 2002 and got no where again. no matter the age of the vehicle...safety is safety. and if ball joints go bad for no reason and have to be replaced then, it should go as a safety concern for all their vehicles. *jb

I am another frustrated 2000 jeep grand cherokee owner! my rear lift gate lock starting making a horrible grinding sound, and wouldn't unlock. after taking it to a local dealership, i learned that this was a common problem with grand cherokees, and would cost about $400 to fix. also, to expect the same problem from the other door locks. now several months later my driver side back seat door lock is doing the same thing. i'm surprised to find so many other grand cherokee owners on line with the same problem(mycarstats.com), yet the manufacturer doesn't feel this is worthy of a recall, and the problem isn't covered under warranty. jeep is aware of this problem and should recall it. *jb
