I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo that has problems with the front brakes since i bought it. the vehicle has 30,725 miles on it and i have had the brakes replaced 3 times. at around 12,000 miles, the car began to vibrate, shake and pull to the left whenever i decelerated. i brought it back to the dealer and they resurfaced the brake rotors. at 30,000 miles the same things began to ocurr, except that the pulling effect was more pronounced, where i actualy had to turn the wheel to the right as i came to a stop. after reading complaints from fellow jeep owners (model year 1999-2004) who have had the same or worse experience, i had aftermarket rotors put on my vehicle by a non-jeep mechanic. i believe that the manufacturer is using oem rotors that are made out of inferior materials. in addition, i am reasonably sure that a class action suit has already been brought against jeep by the mason law firm regarding this exact problem.

I started having had brake problems with the vechicle after about 5000 miles. the dealer corrected the problem but it has returned - only more extreme. i was recently driving at highway speeds and attempted to stop and almost lost contol because of the front end shimmy due to rotor warpage. the front end shimmy is not as extreme at lower speeds. i contacted the dealer and was told that the warranty has expired.i have only 20,000 miles on the vechicle.

2000 grand cherokee front brake rotors warping/failing due to manufacture defect. just daily usage - brakes have been serviced once before, and are now going in for repair again. jeep internal tsb's tsb 05-003-02b - front brake pulsation during light to moderate brake application describes this onoing issue- the vibration is so bad right now that loss of vehicle control is possibility. next service to remedy problem is july 14,2005

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. in early december i was driving the vehicle when my engine light illuminated. i immediately called my mechanic, who happens to work for midas. he told me to bring it in right away. because i live closer to midas than any jeep dealer, and because of the service i have received in the past from jeep/chrysler, i took it to my mechanic. he advised me i had a blown head gasket. i received an estimate from him and he also advised me that the dealership would be considerably more expensive, i allowed him to repair the vehicle. after the repairs were complete, i talked to my mechanic and he advised me to contact chrysler/jeep and ask for reimbursement. here in lies the complaint. when i contacted the dealership, bob dance jeep in oralndo, i was told there was nothing they could do to help because it was my fault i drove the vehicle hot. i explained the reasons i took it to my mechanic as opposed to the dealer and i was told so sorry. i then try to contact the warranty people for the vehicle. i was told i only had a 3year 36,000 mile warranty and that i wasn't able to do anything about it. the vehicle had 49,000 miles at the time of repair. i asked if i would be allowed to purchase an extended warranty and was rudely told no. this is only one example of the customer service i have received since purchasing this vehicle in july 2000. i have also replaced the transmission, two bateries, repaired the window which did not work and had the rotors cut three time. when i spoke to chrysler headquarters, i was not surprised to receive the same response. i was told because the work was done by an independent garage, midas, i was not entitled to any type of reimbursement, period. i dont trust jeep/chrysler. i don't want them working on my vehicle. someone please help me!!

Experienced vehicle vibration when applying brakes. the dealer told me it was not under warrenty and it had to do with driver's braking habits, but this is our second grand cherokee and never experienced this problem before. i had the rotors (two front) turned, but it is doing it again after 5 months. i took it in again, and they tell me the rotors (two front) need to be turned again. from all the complaints i see and hear about, it seems there is a problem with these vehicles.

Vehicle vibrates excessively when brakes are applied from 40 to 70 mph. rotors have been replaced at 5800,12500,&19900 miles. dealers in fl. and nc have serviced vehicle under warranty, stating rotors are prematurely warped and therefore defective. now at 30000 miles and vibrating again.

All 1999-2002 grand cherokee wj models built through may 10, 2002 came equipped with brake calipers made by teves. they are black in color with an open-sided bracket design. due to poor caliper centering, the teves calipers caused the rotors to warp, a problem that has plagued grand cherokees. at the very end of the 2002 model year, jeep changed to fully-closed style calipers designed by akebono. to address the warped rotor problem jeep issued a tsb, #05-003-02. we believe it should be a full recall do to the major wheel shake to the point of the driver almost loosing control of the suv do to this vibration. jeep has long known about this issue & was sued in a class action law suit which they settled the problem is excessive rotor thickness variation generated by poor caliper centering. this causes steering wheel shake. grand cherokee brakes up through may 10th 2002 were designed by teves. same brakes used on bmw & ford expedition but the grand cherokee was the first to use a twin piston caliper design. chrysler wanted twin pistons because of the weight of the vehicle. the caliper spring causes the inboard pad to drag. it takes a lot of heat (cherry red) to warp rotors, so the main cause of rotor variation is not heat but uneven wear.

My wife and i purchased a 2000 jeep grand cherokee from the dealership. about two years ago the 4.0 liter 6 cylinder engine started using coolant and causing the coolant light to alarm. the oil pressure would drop to 0 and sound the check gauges alarm. we took the car to the mechanic shop for costly repairs and troubleshooting. they replaced the water pump, couldn't find any leaks, and replaced the oil pump and rear main seal. they checked the bearing clearances and found them within tolerance. the car is still using one to two pints of coolant every three days and the oil continues to drop to 0 after warm-up. we replace the 4 wheel disc brakes and rotors every two years. the hood gas shocks won't hold the hood up and the shocks cost $150 a pair form the dealer and only last one year. we to have electric door locks that screech and don't lock the doors as well as rear light problems that work off and on. the emissions are much higher than normal on our recent smog test. this is an indication that the #3 and 4 cylinder is using the mysterious antifreeze loss. as a retired mechanical engineer i also believe the oil problem to be related. my wife has the grand cherokee and i purchased a tj wrangler new in 2000. i'm concerned this vehicle will develop the same problems having the same engine. we have invested over $50 thousand in these two cars. we need your help to help us offset this burden. *tr

Both tail light assemblies stopped working and was cited by a police officer. replacement was ~$500. rear lift gate lock actuator is broken, so cannot open lift gate. right rear door lock will not allow opening from inside. shift sensor/solenoid has gone bad twice leading to problems with shifting from gears (revs really high before shifting). rotors are constantly becoming warped and brakes have to be readjusted. left blinker no longer works and to fix it, the dealership told me they have to replace this entire engine block for about $800. power window lock no longer works. other than that, car runs great :). *tr

My local jeep dealer advises that my 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo with 19,000 miles has bad brakes, bad rotors, bad calipers, loose belts (goodyear tires) and is unsafe to drive. he says that is why when i attempt to brake if i am going over 40 mph that the front vibrates or if i attempt to drive at 55 mph the entire car vibrates to the point that i feel a loss of control. i have been surfing the internet and it appears these problems are notorious with other 2000 jeep grand cherokee owners. *jb

Dt: consumer had to replace five individual brakes in five years. first was the front brakes and rotors, then it was the front brakes and rotors again about seven months later. then almost a year later, had them replaced again. a year after that had the rear brakes and rotors done. finally had the front brakes and rotors again. the mechanic told consumer that the rotors were warped, and that they could barely get them off of the car.*ak when i first noticed this, the brakes started to seem like they were not as effective as they should be. then, about a week later, the car will start to vibrate as i press the brake pedal, and the vibration starts in the brake pedal, and continue to vibrate until the whole car is shaking. it took a long time for the vehicle to crank. the dealer replaced the fuel pump o-ring and shims. *nm
05/16/20052500005/01/2002
When applying brakes at speeds of around 30 mph or more the vehicle's front end shims violently. the vehicle shakes as the front wheels are seen oscillations from right to left, which results in a lost of steering. the dealer attributes this to warped rotors. while warped rotors may cause a braking issue they should not cause oscillations in the front wheels. replacing the rotors and pads might temporarily improve the performance it will not correct the underlying problem or design flaw that causes the oscillations in the steering of the front wheels

Brakes keep failing. shortly after purchasing the car in 1999 i returned to the dealer complaining about heavy brake pulsation at 30mph. they told me they fixed it but it continued doing it. i kept going back over and over again. the last time i went back was 3 weeks ago, and they again changed the brakes with newly designed brakes which supposedly would have fixed the problem. the dealer said they wouldn't cover the back brakes b/c they had no complaints about it and that i didn't need to change them. i drove away but the car still pulsates heavily as soon as i brake if i am driving over 20mph. furthermore my car's engine broke down completely after 32000 miles or approximately 7 months ago. they told me the engine failed b/c i didn't change the oil for 10,000 miles. the mechanics report stated that there was water in the fuel, but they still told me it was my fault for not changing the oil. i was out of warranty b/c more than 36 months had gone by from the date of purchase. chrysler agreed to substitute the engine and i had to pay $800. i don't understand how a new car, driven for such little mileage (now only 35,000 miles after almost 4 years) can have all these mechanical problems. i believe the breaks are faulty and am not sure how to further deal with the problem. the car dealer keeps telling me it's perfectly safe to drive.*ak

My 2000 jeep grand cherokee is having problems like many other people. the low coolant light constantly comes on and i have to add coolant weekly, although there is no visible leak. mechanics have told me they cannot find the problem until this past week when a mechanic told me the coolant was leaking into my engine and mixing with my oil. the mechanic estimated i will need a completely new engine within a few months since the coolant-oil mixture has been running through my engine for some time now. the mechanic stated that the engine will stop running in the very near future. my rear left brake and tail light goes out when i step on the brakes. i have had several issues with the rotors and finally had the mechanic replace them with a different kind. *tr

I purchased a 2000 jeep grand cherokee in 2005 from a used car dealer in albuquerque. at that time no recalls or repairs of any safety related defects were revealed to me. i received a recall in novenber 2006 for cooling fan that i had already had done . daimler/chrysler reimbursed me for some of the repairs done. on 4-17-07 i was north bound on unser approaching ladera, traffic was stopped at the red light. i was traveling the speed limit which was posted at 35 mph. i pressed on the brake pedal to begin slowing down and nothing happened. i then slammed my foot down on the pedal it went to the floor and i rear ended a large pickup at the intersection. the air bags did not deploy, and i did not think the seat belt engaged untill i hit the steering wheel with my sternum. my injuries were minor, and i elt the injuries of the person i hit were also minor. the reason i believed thiswas so because i was knocked unconsicience. after some advice from an attourney i checked online for any safty related recalls on the vehicle. i was not surprised to find many. recall # 200002004 was a seat belt recall, recall # 20060313 was a brake system recall, and recall # 19991202 was a air bag recall. there were many more i am sure you were aware off. my concern was for anybody else thatwas driving one of these vehicles with their families in the car. if my wife or daughter had been in the vehicle with me i am sure their injuries would have been more severe. please look into this vehicle, it was not safe. *ak

2000 jeep grand cherokee vin 1j4gw58n1yc310169 at approximately. 15,000 miles: front brake rotors warped resulting in a severe shimmy/jerking of the front tires which resulted in pulling the car off the road. dealer said tough luck, expense included rotor repair and damaged front tires. now at 40.000 miles problem appears to be returning. based on previous recalls, talking to dealers, brake repair shops and reading many similar complaints on the internet as well as our local school van traveling with students having a wreck because of rotor failure, it is more than obvious that there is a known serious problem with inferior/unsafe brake rotors. like most americans, i have been exposed to stories of how the auto manufactures are knowingly willing to trade a few hundred lives to avoid the expense of recalls and building cars with safe components. it doesn't take a real bright person to know that when the steering and braking system on a car fails while traveling at normal speeds and in my case on treacherous mountain roads that serious accidents may and will result. my goal is to have this problem addressed by daimler chrysler and industry-wide before, not after, the body counts start adding up. i have been in contact with daimler chrysler and was basically told where to stick my concerns and complaint. any assistance will be appreciated by me and i suspect by other potential victims. sincerely, gary shaw. *nlm

Regarding the brakes: after repeated (3 times) complaints about the brake pedal going all the way to the floor (when driven under stop and go commuter-type traffic) and each time there was no trouble found i finally (on 7/29/2000) drove into the dealership with the pedal all the way down to the floor. a mechanic was called and said there was definitely a problem and they summized it must be the master cylinder. with respect to the engine: after repeated complaints (at least 3 times) of oil leaking from under the engine and having it dismissed as 1) sloppy oil change, excess oil from left on engine block, 2) faulty oil filter, 3) rear main engine seal (rear main was replaced) and continuing to have oil leaks, on 7/29/2000, i brought it in and the dealership says the engine is porous and the entire engine needs replacement. i was advised to not take the vehicle due to the brake issue. the vehicle is at the dealership awaiting arrival of a new engine and replacement and also installation of the master cylinder. with respect to the differential whine, i have been told twice it is normal and nothing will be done.. *ak

Our grand cherokee developed a severely pulsating brake pedal at 7,000 miles of non off road use, city driving, the selling dealer replaced the front rotors. this occurred again about 15,000 miles later, again with very gentle vehicle usage. the manufacturer claims the vehicle is outside of warranty period at 2 years, and brakes are not warrantied. we maintain there is a design deffect in this system allowing premature front rotor warpage leading to severe pedal and vehicle pulsation on brake applications at higher speeds. we have the assurance of a multitude of other jeep owners that we are not alone in our problem with this brake system. we have spent considerable time discussing this design deffect with daimlerchrysler, but they have obviously shifted their obligation to possible litigation, but not to insitute the required recall and component correction. can a brake system that suddenly alters from correct function, to one that causes the vehicle to shudder in an aggressive manner and cause the operators foot to shake severely after such an extremely short duty cycle be deemed normal? we are careful drivers, and can now avoid injury and property damage by repairing the problem, others might not be so lucky. forgive the length of this reply, the wilkinsons. *ak

First noticed vibration when stopping due to warped front brake rotors before 10000 miles. had serviced at dealer at 13373 miles per dailmer-chrysler tsb (rotors turned down, new improved brake pads). problem reoccurred and was taken back to the dealer at 29899 miles. dealer admits there is a design problem, but dailmer-chrysler will not, and hence will not cover the repair under warranty nor provide a more durable fix. complained to daimler-chrysler's customer service line and was extremely displeased at their complete failure to correct the defect. reviews of various internet discussion groups reveals this is not an isolated incident but a widespread problem with many similar (or even much worse) reports with daimler-chrysler again denying all responsibility. the brakes are clearly underdesigned for the application and pose a potential hazard due to increased braking distances caused by the warped rotors. after-market rotors apparently will correct the problem, but this cost should be incurred by daimler-chrysler. *ak

It is obvious this problem with severely defective brake rotors is a major safety defect. i feel that if the proper safety organization were to investigate this thoroughly by testing braking distance, brake handling, and how abs brake system is affected it would be found to be a significant safety hazard in all the vehicles involved. i would not be surprised if some accidents could have all ready been avoided if this issue was resolved. this is a much more wide spread problem than may be realized as my brother-inlaw had the same problem with his 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo, but he just had them replace both front rotors, at his cost. i'm sure jeep is not writing to the nhtsa every time they replace these defective rotors, do they?

At approc 8000 miles, pulating of brakes was noticed. when coming to a gradual stop. at approximately 10,000 car vibrated when braking at various speeds. i spoke to the huffines service rep on may 15, 2001 while the car was in for a warranty repair , at 15000 miles, after it had lost all power. (distributer problem). he explained to me that the rotors, thru fast cooling, tended to warp with all the weight of the vehicle and it was nothing to worry about from a safety standpoint and it was typical of many cars (even his ford did it, he said). again, in june , 2001, i took it into the dealer i bought it from , eldorado, to have a whining noise ,. the whining noise together with the worsening vibration when braking concerned me and took it into the dealer where purchased. they found nothing and assured me that the vibraton was typiucal and nothing to worry about, .he suggested that it was probably related to the way in which i manage the brakes when stopping. since , the vibration has gotten so bad that it is difficult to stay in my lane stoping and it is very scary. i now have 26,000 miles and after researching and going to a n independent mechanic, i discover that it is apparently a manufactuers problem with the equipment and in order to fix, i must buy new rotors and pads, probasbly for front and back. i have also learned that two other friends who have a 1999's have had to have theirs replaced at very low mileage. one of them is on their third set, as are many listed on the nt web site. brakes should last much longer and with such a dangerous problem, you should be concerned. while there is a service bulletin out on the problem i learned from the sales customer seervice rep at the dealer there is not yet any recall and according to the rep it is a typical problem. she in fact had her replace at 14,000 miles the first time and three times since.. this is a manufacturer problem and it would seem from a liability perspective the manufactuer would want to fix .*ak

There is a defect in the brake pads/rotors. the front brake pads/rotors have been replaced two times, mileage 11,467 and 18,466. the second replacement the service department put on a new updated pad that was supposed to solve the problem. not quite. presently the car is in the service department getting all 4 rotors grinded down. i am currently fighting for warranty coverage. i have been through the arbitration process; i was told it hadn't been serviced enough times for this problem. daimlerchrysler is well aware of this problem, where's the recall for this major safety defect???*ak

Please help me i bough a new car from these dealer and i am having problems with the front end. i bought these car in july of 2000 and the brake pads/rotors have been replace 3 times already the first time was on december 2000, the second time was on june 2001 and the third time now was november 2001. the third time i had to pay because my car was over the 12,000 thousand mile warranty. we spoke to the general manager of the dealer and we got no help, he refer us to the manager of the service departmment who was no help either, i just send a letter to the company in michigan because we really think is not fair, we being given the run around by everyone, we believe that our car has a brake/rotors factory defect but we don't really know how to go about getting help. besides the last time i took the car to get the rotors replaced the dealer reported to me that something was leaking from the front vehicle and that the inner diferential axles needed to be seals, is these normal on a new car we are mainly concern about the brake/pads rotors and because we have children we do not know if these could be a safety issue. thank you so much for your help. sincerely, the lorenzi family. *ak

Vehicle had excessive vibration in steering column when brakes were applied. dealer replaced warped front rotors and brake pads. now 4,000 miles later vibration is beginning to happen again, will be taking to dealer for fix but most likely at my expense since 12month 12,000 mile warranty is up. after reading all inputs from grand cherokee owners i believe this problem must be a known manufacturer defect or design problem and jeep should provide a fix at no additional cost to the consumer.

Puchased vehicle 6/30/2000. on 11/30/2000 with only 8,541 miles, the dealer did a warranty replacement of front rotors and brake pads, which was necessary to correct heavy vibration when braking. vehicle is used 95% in town. seven month later, on 6/01/2001, same problem. dealer resurfaced front and back rotors and charged us an $80.00 (deductable) fee, with the balance paid by daimler chrysler as gooodwill. six months later, 12/14/2001 (15,314 miles) we asked the dealer to replace the rotors since the last fix, only 6 months ago did not last. they told us we would have to pay another $200 to replace the front rotors. we were told by pat the service technician that they now had a permanent fix to this wide spread problem. we did not have time to take it in and on 12/20/2001, while driving on snow packed roads the vehicle was unusually difficult to stop. it felt like the warped rotors impacted the anti-lock brake system to the point of fooling it self into releasing the brakes and alternately locking them up. i can't get more then 7-8 thousand mile out of a set of brakes on this vehicle! my 3 other vehicles have brakes that last over 35,000 miles each! i'm upset over the cost but now i'm extremely concerned about the safety of this vehicle. diamler chrysler doesn't want to stand behind their product.

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4wd. i had begun to notice a shudder when braking and took the vehicle to my local repair shop (midas). they advised me that i would need new rotors, pads, and calipers on at least the front brakes. they also told me that this is a recurring problem with jeeps and that a technical service bulletin had been given to them referring them to this problem. what i don't understand is; if this is a problem that jeep knows about and the braking system that is safety related, then how can it not be a recall. the mechanic told me the calipers have a problem of 'sticking', causing uneven rotor wear and shoe failure. i bought the vehicle used less than a year ago, and now have no real recourse to get the problem fixed. *jb

I purchased my 2000 jeep grand cherokee in 2002. chryser purchased it back from the original owner due to a brake issue. the dealer assured me the problem was resolved. within six months the vehicle began to shake violently upon braking. the dealer resurfaced the rotors and it was okay for a few thousand miles, then began the severe shaking again. chrysler and the dealership have refused to provide a solution. we have since replaced the rotors by an independent mechanic and the problem has re-occured. i have since read numerous complaints on the internet about a bad design that continues to warp the rotors.

My 2000 jeep grand cherokee has experienced braking failures on as a result of front rotor defects. on two occasions the front rotors were repaired by a jeep dealer. in the first instance, the rotors were excessively warped causing severe front end vibration that produced loss of steering and braking. in the second instance, and 15000 miles later, the condition reoccurred. in this second case, the dealer found the rotors to be warped again and replaced both the rotors and the calipers. although the dealer placed the blame on the driver, i have heard other year 2000 jeep grand cherokee owners complain of identical rotor failures. in both cases, the dealer service agent acknowledged the problem but would not take responsibility although offering a discounted repair cost.*ak

I have a 2000 jeep gc laredo, and along with many, many other people i have numerous problems. the warped rotors are very dangerous when you have to use your brakes, especially when you have children in the car as i do, also the taillight/brake light issue, that has gotten me pulled over more than once, even though i put a new bulb in it every time. the door lock actuator that is very annoying not to mention my transmission has a shifting problem that i can't do anything about and now my radiator fan will not work so my car will overheat if i am stopped for too long. *jb

Brake pulsation and heavy vibration during normal braking. this is due to defective brake componets i.e. warping of rotors caused by heat friction from inferior metal and or manufacturing process. the class action suit filed against daimler/chrysler only covers vehicles that were under the standard warranty period. although d/c isn't admitting guilt, the proposed settlement will cover only those vehicles that qualify under their rules. the attorneys for the settlement class did not litigate a claim or even contest the rights of the class members who were not covered by the warranty when the failures occurred. all of the class members who had this problem need to be compensated for these repairs. your agency needs to take action and review all of the data and evidence that proves this is a serious issue, and either have a recall or ask d/c to repair all of the defective vehicles, before these parts totally fail and cause death or injury! *jb

2000 jeep grand cherokee since purchase, vibrates when brakes applied at highway speeds, is also causing uneven feathering/wear on front tires. i gave up on bigelow motors, belleville, nj ever helping me from the start, as they continued to deny that there was a problem. i was advised that chrysler knows the caliper warp in this model of cherokee and both the calipers and rotors will need to be replaced. there is no recall on this as yet but there certainly should be. i have been reading other complaints on this model of jeep and the manufacturer has had repeated brake problems which go unaddressed and cost owners a lot of money to fix or get to the problems. chrysler obviously is not responding deliberately. someone needs to investigate the brake problems with jeep grand cherokee and find out why they can not be fixed once and for all. the consumer is not being informed of the potential brake problems and thus can not make and informed decision when purchasing a new vehicle . in the end money out of consumers pockets and no protection from fraud by the manufacturer. i have had the brakes repaired almost a dozen times at a cost of almost $450 for each repair!!! this is an outrage, so please help. i need some guidance. *jb

I have a 2000 jeep with recurring problems with what i am told are the brake rotors. they apparently keep warping, causing moderate to severe shimmying when braking at higher speeds and pulsating when braking at lower speeds. at 10,531 miles i brought the car in. they resurfaced the rotars which they claim the manufacturer claimed would fix the problem. then at 26,579 miles i was back at the dealer. they told me the manufacturer had a different solution. they replaced the rotors, brakes and calipers. i was skeptical that they were replacing a defective part with the same defective part. i told them i had a 1995 grand cherekee that had over 100 thousand miles and never had any problem with rotars so why didn't the manufacturer just use the 1995 part but, again, i was assured the new rotars were different and defect free. now i have 49,000 miles on the car and it is again at the dealer for the same problem. the dealer and manufacterer say they will not make any further repairs.the service manager told me i had three options. one, they would replace the rotars for $240.00. two,do nothing because the manufacturer assures me that the problem does not effect safety or maintenance for any other parts on the vehicle.(which by the way i find to be a ludicrous statement and a callous disregard for the safety of their own consumers let alone others on the road since the car becomes very hard to control when the front end is shaking violently) and third, i could buy the part from a non-dealer at after market prices and get rotars made of a different and presumably stronger material. none of these options were appealing since experience with two jeeps prior to this one dictated that this was not normal wear and tear, had nothing to do with my driving, and was clearly a defective part. *ak

Complaint investigator, i purchased a used 2000 jeep cherokee laredo in august of 2002. at the time of purchase, the brakes were pulsing badly and the dealer turned the rotors. in less than 12 months and less than 10,000 miles the rotors are once again pulsing very badly. since i purchased this vehicle, i have learned that this model has brake issues. does chrysler corp. have a solution for this? i heard that chrysler will replace the brakes because the factory rotors are inadequate for the vehicle under some type of customer satisfaction effort but will only offer this of the customer complains vigoursly. any additional informatuion that you could supply would be of great assistance to me while i attempt to resolve this problem. fyi - i purchased an extended warranty when i purchased the vehicle but rotors are a normal wear item. i would agree with this statement if the factory rotors originally supplied on the vehicle were normal and the factory brakes were adequate for the vehicle. in my opinion, the factory supplied brakes should be covered under some type of defects in materials or workmanship. my research has uncovered that the rotors are too small for the weight of the vehicle. no one has died from this thank goodness but i believe that the consumers who have purchased these vehicles have been damaged and should have some type of recourse in this matter. sincerely, robert g. spinks

2000 jeep grand cherokee brake rotors continue to warp causing severe pulsation in steering wheel during braking, particularly at higher speeds. i believe the problem is due to a design flaw which began in the 1999 model and has not yet been corrected in new models. daimler-chrylser will not solve the problem, the local dealership in boise is keenly aware of the problem. first warping occurred on all 4 brake rotors under 4900 miles. front rotors have been replaced 3 times and resurfaced twice, back rotors resurfaced once and replaced once, all within 36000 miles. i am concerned that my family and others on the road are at risk if i am unable to stop and/or control the vehicle. *ak

I have had problems with the rotors on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. at 20,000 miles they warped and the service department resurfaced them. at 30,000 miles, i had to have them replaced. at 47,000 miles, again resurfaced and at around 60,000 miles, again i had to replace them. this is not new to me. this is my fourth jeep , and have had similar results on all of the jeeps that i have owned. this is not just my experience, i know of many people, whom i work with and friends, that have the same problems that i have had. i believe this is cause by a few different reasons for this and unfortunately, it all comes back to cost for the car manufactures. they are making their rotors thinner, and of poorer quality materials. this means that they can not get rid of heat properly and therefore for warp. *nlm

When brakes are applied, the vehicle and steering wheel vibrated. vibrations increased when attempting to stop quickly or from higher speeds. steering wheel shakes so hard now that it is difficult to control car. first started to notice problem just over 12,000 miles when warranty had expired. judging from other complaints as well as tsb bulletins, this is a common problem with jeeps. why isn't there a recall, or why doesn't chrysler replace rotors for free as this seems to be a design flaw? *jb

Continue to experience front brake rotor failure due to warpage. this has occurred every 6,000-8,000 miles. rotors and pads have been replaced 4 times with the calipers replaced the last time per tsb #0500302 dtd 5/02. they have now failed again even with the new calipers. the dealer has been great, however this is a design flaw with chrysler/jeep that needs a recall and a permanent fix. it is a safety issue as well as a time issue to have it fixed every 8,000 miles! chrysler refuses to provide an extedned warranty or any lasting solution to the problem. i think a class action law suit would be in order.

The nhtsb should make daimler/chrysler fix jeep grand cherokee brake rotor problems at no cost to the owner. our jgc had all four brake rotors replaced at 14000 mi. because of strong vibration when the brakes were applied. the vibration at highway speed was bad enough to make the vehicle difficult to keep in control. that time, d/c would not cover the problem because the warranty period for brakes ended at 12000 mi. the dealer replaced them at their expense. all four brake rotors must be replaced again at 27000 mi. because of the same vibration problem. neither d/c nor the dealer will cover the costs this time, although they both admit there is a chronic recurring problem with these brake rotors due to flawed engineering.*ak

On vacation traveling through new mexico at the posted speed limit of 75 mph on ih40, when the brakes were applied a violent shimmy or pulsation in the front end occured which was translated to the steering wheel making control of the vehicle questionable. chrysler road assistance was contacted and they recommended hatch motor co. in show low, arizona which was our destination. hatch removed and turned the front rotors which was not covered by either the original waranty or the extended waranty. the problem was improved but not completely eliminated. on the return trip to carrollton, texas, the problem continued to worsen. upon our return home, the vehicle was taken to the dealer, huffines, who turned the rotors a second time stating that this was normal and that all rotors needed turning at 30,000 miles. again, this work was not covered by either of the warantys. my previous vehicle was a 1995 land rover discovery and after more than 90,000 miles, the rotors had never been turned and the brakes were perfect. something is basically wrong with the original installation, design or quality of these rotors. they should not fail at such low milage and in such a dangerous fashion. please insist that chrysler do something about this problem before someone is killed or seriously injured. nlm

Front disc brake rotors fail after 4,000-6,000 miles on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. it is not an isolated problem; chrysler knows of it, dealers like mine replace them regularly, and as long as the new ones fail within the 12,000 mile warranty will continue to do so. but chrysler has no apparent intention of dealing with this problem in any other fashion. my car is unsafe due to brake pulsation once the rotors have failed; i tow a 2-horse trailer with it regularly, and the danger from the brakes is heightened with the added weight. i do not understand the failure of chrysler to deal with this as a safety issue. given the history of brake problems on previous years, this should also be of greater concern to nhtsa than it seems to be. the fix for previous brake problems (large recalls for earlier models) in newer models has introduced new problems. my jeep is unsafe to handle at speeds over 30 mph due to brake pulsation, front end wobbling, etc., whenever the problem has recurred. it is currently in the shop again for the same problem. *ak

Rotors are warping. all my friends with jeeps have had rotors fail within 20k miles. must be defective parts from manufacturer. vehicle shuddrers uncontrollably when braking hard. if the driver rarely brakes hard, he may not realize the extent of the problem until he forcefully applies the brakes. at that point, it is very easy to get into an accident. myself and three others have almost had accidents because of this. we got lucky, but there must be others who were not lucky. dealership claims there is no problem. search the internet, there are hundreds of postings about this problem! do something to make jeep recall and fix the problems before someone is killed. this is a car that families buy because it has a good safety record, but it has a serious defect.*ak

Specific problem pertains to front rotors. front rotors wear out every 4000 to 6000 miles or whenever they get hot, which causes servere pulsation when braking at speed over 45 mph. we are now looking at replacing rotors for the 3rd time in 18 months and less than 21,000 miles. dealer has extended warranty to 36,000 miles, however we want a long term solution to this problem. we have two friends who own the same car and they have the exact same problem. *ak

If i was traveling at a certain speed and i applied my brakes, my steering wheel began to vibrate. i didn't think anything of it. my jeep was less than six months old and there couldn't be any problems with it....yet. i blemed the road conditions and didn't think much about it. the vibrations got worse but the roads where the same. i took it in the direct auto plaza, in el centro ca. and they said it was my rotors, they were warped. they said that it was normal wear and tear and that warranty would not cover the fixing of the rotora. they where going to charge me 350.00. i am frustrated because if this is normal wear and tear i don't know if i could afford to be putting 350.00 additional money in to new vehicle every 12-15 thousand mile. i feel that the rotors are defective and should be replaced under warranty.*ak

I was traveling at 65 mph when i applied my brakes to negotiate a curve. the front end of the jeep began to shake violently and i was not able to stop in time. i went off of the road momentarily and i was able to regain control of the vehicle. upon mechanical inspection it was found that the rotors needed re-surfacing. the rotors were resurfaced and the problem was eliminated. the certified jeep mechanic who fized my vehicle stated that he has noticed an unusuall amount of jeep vehicles that need their rotors re-surfaced when having low mileage. i see that as a defect since i have owned many new cars and this is the first time that i have seen where rotors have to be re-ssurfaced so soon. my jeep is owned by my wife and it is our family vehicle which is driven within in normal limits. even my police car that i drive at work (which is driven hard) does not need it's rotors re-surfaced yet. i have also re-searched and found that other jeep owners are experiencing the same problems with rotors. i hope that you will look into this matter. in all my driving, i had never experienced such a tense moment when i tried to brake to negotitate that curve. i was doind 65 mph, however i had began to slow down for the curve and i could not due to, in my opinion, defective rotors. thank you.*ak

Brake line rusted thru, resulting in complete loss of brakes. line is rusted wherever a clip holds it to the chassis. other spots ready to rust through. mfg. refuses to pay for repair or consider the catastrophic safety issue this involves. claim it is due to elements.....whole line is not rusted through, only where clip holds it. car was driven normally, under same conditions others face, this could be a catastrophic failure causing death. certainly your brake line should not fail after 2.5 years with normal use. if the elements caused it, are the cars not supposed to be driven outside. could be a reaction between the clip and the line caused by salt, but there are a lot of people driving through salt in the winter. they may die.*ak

*ak
