As i was pulling out of my driveway on the morning of tuesday, june 5 and heard a loud clicking sound coupled with a sticking in my steering wheel as i turned it to the right. as i continued to my drive, i noticed the clicking and sticking almost every time i turned the steering wheel to the right (even on slight motions like when parallel parking). i took the car to the mechanic for fear the steering would stick and i would ram into something or someone. he told me everything seemed fine on the outside (no signs of the typical wear and tear or any of the common leakage problems). however, he said this was a serious problem and the vehicle should not be driven. after careful inspection he found the interior of the gearbox cracked. when he looked up the parts he saw that the 2000 and 2001 steering gear had been recalled and instructed me to talk to my local jeep dealer (my local dealer is the figueroa location in downtown los angeles). when i spoke with them, they informed me my car was not under the recall parameters as it was manufactured in december 1999. however, i would like to note that this problem seems far more reaching than the small parameters of the dates of the recalls. the same part (#52088272ad) has caused the same hazardous and costly problem (sticking/binding/seizing) over a span of two years of jeeps, 2000 and 2001. this same part was used in jeeps in subsequent years as well.

My car has major problems and i can't afford to fix, then i find the problem that i have is due to the automaker's problem because the car is on recalls for the problems i am having. i received no notices on any recall, and when i got on the web-site to check for recalls there are as many as 10 major problems with my car and jeep. some could cause me to crash or even explode while driving. where are my recall notices? *tr

Driving with my daughters to the beach when suddenly my steering wheel froze as i was along a winding road. towed truck to a mechanic who diagnosed that the gear box was broken at that point he repaired the gear box. approximately 1 week later the same exact thing except that the truck caught fire, again towed the truck back to mechanic who replaced the gear box. i thought i was going to die when i experienced my steering wheel freeze and the fire was extinguished quickly so minimal damage was suffered. in 1 year that i own this vehicle the radiator has also needed to be repaired, the locks on my driver door stopped working, the fan in the cooling system has stopped working, i have been told that the muffler was improperly installed. i never expected so many faults or so much money spent in repairs on a so called certified used vehicle. *nm

Hello, i am the owner of a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo with the vin#: 1j4gw48nxyc108473. i am experiencing the following issues with my vehicle: the steering feels loose, feels like it is sticking and it seized once. i had the vehicle inspected by a dealership and was told that the steering gear box is defective and needs to be replaced. since i am very concerned about the safety of my family, we have discontinued driving the vehicle for now. after some research for the possible root cause of this problem i found the following recall notice: 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo nhtsa recall id number: 99v312000 recall date: nov 04, 1999 component: steering:gear box (other than rack and pinion) potential units affected: 1259 please review interestingly enough, my own vehicle was also built in august of 1999 (per sticker on vehicle). after talking to the dealership to see if my vehicle was included in the recall, i was only told that there are no open issues listed on my vehicle and they could not even tell me if my steering gear was replaced at the time of the previous owner. after calling chrysler corporate customer service, i was also told that there is no open recall on my vehicle and that there is nothing they could do for me. here is my request to you: please contact daimler chrysler to get some more information as to why my vehicle is not included in this recall even though it was built in exactly the same time frame as all the recalled vehicles. i would expect for dc to include my vehicle in this recall and remedy the defect in their component before anybody gets hurt. thank you very much for your help. best regards, klaus hofmockel

Summary: vehicle description: sport utility vehicles. some steering gear units were assembled with internal end-of-travel-stops that missed the heat treat process, resulting in soft internal travel stops. consequence: this could result in sticking, binding, or seizing of the steering gear there is already a recall on the 200o jeep grand cherokee for the steering box. i am having this problem as well. as a result i drove off the road last night going around a corner. i live in the mountains of colorado so i was lucky this was not in a bad spot. i was able to go onto the shoulder and stop. it did free itself after i revved the engine and turned the wheel. but none the less this could result in a crash. i have contacted jeep and they tell me i am not covered by their recall. i find this ludicrous. if they know of a issue they should take responsibility for it. especially one that could result in some either running head on into another vehicle, or driving off the road.

Whining noise upon turning the vehicle left or right at low speeds.. dealer in princeton ,nj says sir...thats normal operating noise.. wow, just like pleading the 5th.. no comment.. took it to another dealer(one where it was purchased from) they recognized the problem and said it was a common problem.. they replaced the gear box. sound is coming from the pressurized fluid within the steering gear box. it is a confirmed design flaw. congratulations chrysler.. you did it again..the new gear box is much quieter but aftera month..the noise is back but not as pronounced. lesson for today.. not all dealers are the same in their service ability.*ak

Experiencing what the dealership calls a honking noise in the steering wheel sometimes when making right turns. the dealership has tried to fix the problem twice now by putting two steering gear assemblies in and the problem still exists. now they think the tubing for the steering wheel fluid is the problem and that it needs to be re-designed. they think the tube is to small. could this problem possibly cause me any safety problems while driving? what should i do considering they are telling me that they have to re-design this tubing?

The first time this happened, i was moving my car out of the garage and as i backed out of my driveway, the steering wheel froze and i was unable to turn it at all. i had to shut of the car then turn it back on again. the scond time i was driving down the street and needed to turn my steering wheel to the left, and it froze up.i was unable to turn my steering wheel at all. i had to stop my vehicle in the middle of the road, put it in park and turn it off, then back on again to reset it. i looked up on the internet any recalls and i was given a technical service bulletin that there is a problem with the steering: gear box. however, the dealerships will not fix it for free. *ak

Tie rods, wheel bearings, ball joints, fan clutch, shorted engine compartment wiring harness, fuel pump assembly all gone wrong from time of purchase; january 2000/brand new to sept. 2006...some pd. under warranty others after 2004 not; even though the defects usually do not happen to a jeep grand cherokee/fully loaded. the last straw was the ball joints; we asked if some form of recall should of been done and then asked for a reimbursement because my wife's' 2004 jeep liberty limited had a recall on it's ball joints/lower ones so after having mine replaced last friday 9/15/2006 we asked about the grand cherokee and it's ball joints; we also updated on all the defects we've had to correct and wondered if it wasn't a expensive lemon...$35,000.00 is what i paid. we called chrysler main customer service and was only told were sorry, the age of the jeep and past warranty...what does that have to do with all the past defects since 2000 and the fact we tried their customer service in 2002 and got no where again. no matter the age of the vehicle...safety is safety. and if ball joints go bad for no reason and have to be replaced then, it should go as a safety concern for all their vehicles. *jb
