My 2000 jeep grand cherokee with 90,000 miles has had problems with defrosting and heating for the past year. when it is cold or rainy the windshield will not clear not matter what settings i use. i get snow and ice accumulating on my foggy windshield and i am forced to pull over in dangers conditions and scrap my windows. recently my heat has stopped working on the drivers side and i looked for information online and found numerous forums with thousands of people having the same problems with their jeep grand cherokees. people have complained for years to the dealership and daimler chrysler only to be told it was a comfort issue not a safety issue. it is s serious safety issue and i feel this needs to be looked into before someone does get hurt or worse. they are aware of the problem and the dealerships are willing to charge thousands of dollars to 'fix' problems but it should be recalled because they never fix the problem and customers are taking unnecessary risks to drive their suv's (sports utility vehicles, ironically) without heat, defrost and/or cooling. please take this complaint seriously and look and see how many other similar complaints you have gotten on the same issues with these cars. i can not afford to buy a new car and i do not want to out myself and my family as well as others at risk because one company is not responsible enough to fix such a blatant safety issue. thank you

2000 jeep grand cherokee larado, 105,000 miles. jeep door locking actuators have been replaced 3 times on one door, and it just went again. in addition to another door actuator having to be replaced as well. according to the internet forums for jeeps, this is a known issue and there are literally thousands of complaints for this same issue on the same make and model of jeep.

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited with 151,400 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a blend air door is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems. *tr

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the heating works fine on the driver's side of the vehicle, but only cold air blows from the vents on the passenger side. my internet review suggests that it won't be long before i lose heat on the driver's side. this is apparently a very common problem with jeep grand cherokees ... and chrysler knows it. the fix is very expensive ... blend air door actuator, or something like that. this will become a safety hazard when i am unable to defrost the windshield. chrysler should recall and fix! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the heat/defrost function failed in the vehicle. during the winter, the contact must remain cold in the vehicle and the windows become foggy instead of defrosting. the vehicle has been to the dealer twice and they stated that there was possibly a condenser leak in the heater, which caused the control lever for the heating unit to deteriorate. the contact stated that the repair was too expensive. he has found several complaints regarding this failure with the same model; therefore, he believes that the manufacturer should issue a recall. a relay shorted out due to a failure with the heating mechanism and the entire vehicle filled with smoke. there were no injuries. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 90,000.

Failure of blend doors in heater/defogger of vehicle. jeep has known about these cheap parts for some time. the repair costs over $1000 because it is labor intensive, the complete dash panel has to be removed to access where the blend doors are located. the part costs are only about $150 at most! with the failure comes no warm/hot air from the heater, consequently no defrosting of the windshield.........a severe visibility problem!! jeep/chrysler should be picking up all, or at least most of the cost of this repair. the original parts were cheaply made and are subject to wear out within only a few years. i recently had to pay for this repair myself. i could not do without the defroster during winter months. i had to pay for it out of my own pocket. i would like to see jeep/chrysler refund some of that cost to me, it would only be fair. do a search on the internet, and you will see the numbers of these same failures for several jeep year models. *tr

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower i have a 2000 jeep that the defogger does not work properly, and from what i have learned, chrysler has known about this problem for some time and has failed to act on the problem as far as a recall! this is a dangerous issue with most jeeps. this failure occurs everyday due to the fact the blend doors are broken as part of faulty manufacturing. i can't even defrost the windshield due to this problem. i don't mind fixing the problem, but when i learn that chrysler knew of this problem long ago, i think they need to bear some of the burden. thank you. *tr

Automatic climate control system acts erratically. regardless of what settings are used, hot air will blow out one side while cold blows out the other. sometimes which side is cold or hot will switch. i am filing this with the nhtsa because this is a major safety hazard. because my automatic climate control doesn't work correctly, i have no windshield defroster. we have been receiving a lot of rain lately and the temperatures have been dropping. my windshield keeps getting foggy and i can't clear it. i have to pull over and wipe it off with a towel just to have it fog up again a few minutes later while i'm trying to drive. in the winter, the windshield will freeze over and it is very difficult to keep clear visibility. i can deal with being uncomfortable, but no defroster is a major problem. i have taken the vehicle into a dealership and have been told the cost of repair will be at least $1200. after researching online, it appears this is a very common problem. my fathers 99' jeep grand cherokee had the same problem. jeep has identified a design flaw and has replacement parts, but they will not fix the problem under warranty unless the vehicle is still in warranty. this is a major design flaw and a major safety issue. jeep didn't have a fix for this until the jeep was well out of warranty. i put today's date as the incident date, but this has been happening for the past year. it is considerably worse now and the vehicle will be unsafe to drive this winter. *tr

Only cold air blows from the right side vents on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. this began the end of this past winter. this problem affects the heat vents and the defrost vent, therefore causes a safety hazard, as the right side windshield ices up. from my searches, this appears to be a big problem, effecting many jeep owners. my mechanic at the dealership, said it would be about a grand to fix. he also did not even ask me if i wanted to get it fix, almost like it was too time consuming and did not want me to get it fixed. so, therefore i have not had it fixed yet. *tr

We own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. it just started blowing cold air only out of the drivers side vents and hot air out of the passengers side vents. we understand it is a blend door malfunction which is widespread among 1998-2004 jeep grand cherokee owners. we called our local jeep dealer and they estimated it would cost between $800 and $2000 to fix as they would have to pull the entire dash out of the car. this is simply unacceptable for an owner to have to pay all of this money to repair a manufacturing deficit in the original design. about every jeep owner we know has faced this problem. we feel you should demand that jeep recalls all of the jeeps and fix them at their expense. *tr

2000 jeep grand cherokee blender door, which is located in the heater/ air conditioner box. upon looking up this problem, and asking other jeep owners, this seems to be a very common and large problem, as well as costly ($800- $1200) to repair. how could there not possibly be a recall on something as expensive as this to fix. especially when it happens to all of these vehicles in the years between 1999-2004? the electronic dual air control was developed with parts not built to with stand the job it is required to do. *tr

The blower motor on my jeep grand cherokee limited failed due to a problem with doors in the heating/cooling system. the repair will cost $ 900 - 1,200.00 to repair. there was heat. there was cooling. there was no blowing to send that air into the vehicle compartment. defrosting of windows was slow.the condensation evaporated only after the air moved itself. i can only switch to defrost, a minimal assist in the process. my husbandwas unwilling to drive or be a passenger in this vehicle due to the danger caused by the defrosting problem (we have a home in mn and i will be moving there soon) or during the extremes of temperature during winter and summer. there was a website with a long list of people with the same claim. *ak

I am writing to express my frustration and anger regarding my 2000 grand cherokee. since this past october, i have experienced a myriad of problems which include the following: 1. a broken ventilation deflector which prevents any air from coming through the ventilation. i spent nearly $100.00 to find out that it is a $37.00 part with $500.00 in labor just to install it. i have children in the car, and the summer heat of 100+ degrees is in my mind, dangerous. 2. all of the passenger doors cannot be opened either manually or remotely from the outside or inside. i received an estimate to replace the lock actuators at a staggering cost of $500.00 per lock! the doors cant be opened from the outside or from the inside without systematically unlocking the doors with the remote, then reaching in from the drivers seat to manually unlock them from the inside. it doesnt take a genius to see that this is a huge safety issue if i happen to get in an accident and the passengers (children) are unable to get out of the vehicle. the jeep mechanic said this is a common occurrence with jeeps for quite a while. 3. the driver side mirror broke when my wife was adjusting the angle of the mirror. there is now no tension to hold the mirror in place. all of these problems began 8 months ago and i am more than a little angry about it, especially when none of these items are covered past the 3 year warranty. all tolled, i am looking at spending somewhere in the range of $3000.00 to fix these problems. right now i am extremely unsatisfied customer, and expect some healthy measure of cooperation from jeep.*ak

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower i have a 2000 jeep that the defogger does not work properly, and from what i have learned, chrysler has known about this problem for some time and has failed to act on the problem as far as a recall! this is a dangerous issue with most jeeps. this failure occurs everyday due to the fact the blend doors are broken as part of faulty manufacturing. i can't even defrost the windshield due to this problem. i don't mind fixing the problem, but when i learn that chrysler knew of this problem long ago, i think they need to bear some of the burden. thank you. *tr

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee that i purchased in 2003 with only 27k on it and a factory warranty i also purchased a extended bumper to bumper warranty from the jeep dealer when i bought the vehicle at about 75k the vehicle lost all heat on the passenger side it only blows cold air i took the vehicle back to the dealer ship to have it looked at they told me it could of been one of two things either the heater control unit or the blend doors but almost always it is the blend doors, they then told me that it was not covered due to the warranty expired a few months before and that it would cost me over $1000 dollars to fix i have been driving the vehicle all this time with no heat because i can not afford to fix it and it is a major safety hazard as all winter long my car will not defrost, i can only see out a little space in the window when the temp drops to freezing, if i knew back then that this issue is affecting almost every jeep owner out there not a select few i would of acted sooner but as i cant stand it anymore i did some research and found many sites that have hundreds even thousands of people affected by the faulty parts installed by the chrysler corp this type of issue is not supposed to happen when you spend 30+k on a vehicle. *tr

My ac fan had been cutting on and off randomly in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. i thought at first it may be a bad climate control control panel. a few days later, i smelled electrical burning smell in my car and the fan would not come on at all. today i removed the blower fan, thinking it was bad, but it turns out the blower is fine, the blower control module relay and wiring harness had melted in the dashboard above where the passengers feet would rest. i have taken pictures and will be glad to send them upon request, but i think jeep/chrysler should have to replace this due to the potential fire threat and lack of safety (since the fuse did not blow). i attempted to replace the part through an automotive parts company, but the blower control module will need to be purchased straight from chrysler corp. please call me or email me with any follow up questions you may have. once again, i will also send pictures upon request. thanks!

*ak

The in-dash heater/ac blend door is malfunctioning causing air flow not to be properly diverted between lower dash vents, dashboard vents and defroster vents. this is creating an unsafe condition whereby the windshield will not clear in rainstorms and will not stay defrosted in winter driving. a search on the internet and along with discussions with a local dealer working with jeeps for many years has led me to understand that this is a long-known and very common defect with jeep grand cherokees. prices to replace this blend door have ranged from $1000 to $1500 due to the fact that this is a very labor intensive replacement. i contact chrysler assistance and they suggested that i contact you to identify this safety concern so that perhaps a technical service bulletin (tsb) could be issued and chrysler would address the defective blend door for consumers experiencing this safety issue.
