 I have read the recent news on the investigation into the grand cherokee gas tanks. both my wife and i own them. i have a 2001 and she has a 2002. i am very concerned over this as we both use these cars to take our daughter places. i worry about their safety. i recently changed the fuel filter on hers and until that time didn't even realise that the fuel tank is where it is or that it is made of plastic. it's apparent to me that they pose a serious risk, especially since one of the bolts on the rear sway bar is less than a quarter inch from the tank and could very easily puncture it in even a minor rear end crash. this is something you cannot ignore. there is obviously a reason they moved the tank after 2004. you have millions of ticking time bombs driving around. this could pose danger to the occupants of the vehicle that rear ends a jeep and to any by standers that try to assist in an accident situation. with the way the spare tire compartment is designed, there are a few holes that are covered with sealant that could act as a passage way for the flames, the sealant in both of our cars is old and brittle so it would offer very little resistance to anything.

 I am experiencing a major problem with my vehicle, 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland (manufacture date 10/01). nhtsa campaign number 01v374000 clearly affects my vehicle, as i am experiencing the exact problem associated with that recall and fall within the specific dates of vehicles affected, however, daimler/chrysler refuses to honor the recall, claiming my vehicle is unaffected. if i fill the vehicle completely (until automatic shutoff), all the fuel in the filler neck leaks to the ground. if i fill the vehicle less than full (not up to the filler neck) no leakage occurs. it is clearly the uel inlet check valve and my vehicle is clearly affected. not only is this a safety issue (fire, or worse) which is the main concern, but also a waste of fuel (and expense) and is damaging to the environment. in speaking with the representative at daimler/chrysler, they flatly refuse to honor the existing recall, claiming it is a warranty item, however, because the vehicle is out of warranty, i am responsible. *nm

 While driving at approximately 70mph on expressway, fuel line became detatched causing engine to fail. fuel line failed without warning and was not a result of any mechanical damage. failure of fuel line resulted in a large fuel spill underneath vehicle which had been driven for past 15 hours on a trip from florida to illinois. we had a concern that fuel spill could have ignited from heated components of the vehicle's undercarriage. dt

 Consumer received a recall notice in the mail regarding a fuel tank blocker bracket. consumer has taken the vehicle to the local dealership to have the recall work repaired. the work was not performed because consumer has an after market trailer hitch on the vehicle which prevents them from being able to install the bracket. the choices given to consumer was to either have the hitch removed or to live with the problem. *jg

 I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo, manufactured 8-2001. in november 2004, the car began to have a hard start to it. the longer the car sat, the longer it took to start it. sometimes the cranking went on for about 10 seconds. it would do this for 2-3 weeks and then stop for 2-3 weeks and then repeat the cycle. the check engine light came on and the mesage was 341: meaning camshaft sensor malfunction. it is involved in relaying power to the engine and, if it failed, could result in loss of power while in motion. i spent $220 to have it fixed. however, the hard start still continued. i went to a jeep dealership where they told me, without a doubt, that it was the fuel pump. i asked them how in 3 minutes they could know that. they told me that there has been a really high failure rate of the fuel pump model which was installed in my car. they told me that it has been a persistent problem in grand cherokees in years 1999-2003. i asked why they had not issued a recall or investigatioin and the service assistant told me that the cost to replace these fuel pumps would be exhorbitant if done across a mass scale. however, he was more than happy to give me a $550 bill to have the fuel pump replaced. i had no choice but to pay it because, at some point, it would fail altogether resulting in an inoperable vehicle. my complaint is this: if they are aware of a serious fuel system failure that is widespread and they refuse to publicly acknowledge this fuel system failure, is there something that nhtsa can do? i also want to report this fuel system failure in this complaint.*ak

 Whenever the consumer attempted to fuel the vehicle fuel spilled onto the ground. there were recalls on the fuel filler neck and the canister assembly. the recalls have been repaired, but the problem still persists. dealer explained that they were obligated to make the repairs once, then consumer has to pay for any other repairs. *ak

 Fuel emission control canister ticks and sounds like a lifter tick - gas mileage is 11.3 miles to the gallon. strong gas odors can be smelled inside the truck once the gas tank level reaches the 1/2 way mark. dealership apologizes but says there's nothing they can do. the truck is 3 months old and has 4400 miles on it. help i love my jeep
