The driver's side power seat bracket had broken in two, tipping the seat to the right, making me over-steer very quickly to the right which i had to compensate for in order to avoid running off the road into the ditch. i have since read online that this is a common problem of metal fatigue from under strength rails. *tr

After just less than 30k miles, both front seat elements started to get overly hot, then stopped working. took into dealer, found short in bottom element. vehicle was stilll under warranty, i had also bought an extended warranty. everything for that eight way powered seat was covered but the heater element. was told it would be an $800 per seat fix. i declined to have it fixed. now i find out that there is a recall for this exact issue, but that it does not cover my vin number according to both the dealer and daimlerchrysler. it just doesn't make any sense how they can get away with this after reading all the blogs from people with this same issue and the same response from chrysler. sure could use some help getting them to stand behind their product.

While driving, i stepped on my brake, i heard a loud bang and found myself first jammed into the steering wheel/dash area, and then, once my vehicle was stopped, i was in the rear seat area. upon further investigation, i found that the rear seat brackets on my front (drivers) seat were broken through; the metal that the seat bracket is made of was broken at both rear corners, and the front bolts were pulled-through. the thin metal the bracket is made of had a couple of cracks, and overall, the seat is almost useless when it comes to driving the car in a safe manner. fortunately, when my seat broke i was not going so fast as to not be involved in an accident! if i had been on the freeway, i believe i would not be here today writing this complaint. there are no reasonable local sources to replace the bracket;(the jeep dealers want to sell a new seat for approx. 700.00, unless you want to pay $300.00+ for another seat from a wrecking yard, which will also have the same thin metal bracket). i am attempting to get it welded, but i have already been informed that this will be a temporary repair at best; the metal the bracket is made of is far too thin to handle the weight of a person using the seat for a long period of time, and will break again). help! *tr

Recently my front driver seat on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland started to rock back and forth and felt very loose. i looked under the seat and found that the very thin metal that had been connected to the seat frame/rail had fractured and one bolt had actually bored through the metal hole opening between the two assemblies.
03/14/2011213000
Front driver's seat seemed wobbely, looked under seat and bracket that holds seat to the rails is broken on front left and right side. you can now lean back and front of seat lifts up. very dangerous. if there was a crash, you could easily end up in the back seat of the car. i have looked and found many complaints about this situation with the jeeps, 1 site had over 2600 complaints in a 2 year period. i took off the side of the seat and added 2 nylon straps to hold seat down to rail. i have read many places where people have this welded back together and it breaks again. metal is very thin, not built to take strain of any kind.

The heated seat on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland overheated and burned my legs. i now leave the heated seat turned off. i took the car to the jeep dealer and they stated it needs a new seat heater assembly and will cost $800.00. i cannot afford to pay that much so i did not have it replaced. i saw a recall notice on the nhtsa web site and discussed this with the jeep dealer. the jeep dealer stated that my jeep is not covered in the recall.
06/15/2006100000
The support frame for the drivers side seat failed at approximately 100,000 miles. it causes the car seat to shift as there are only 3 support points instead of 4. i had a mechanic attempt to fix it but that only lasted until 150,000 miles. a moderate to high impact accident may cause the entire seat to come loose thereby nullifying any safety effect a seat belt may have to save my life.

This evening, while making a left turn in my 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo, the metal base structure of the driver's seat sheered off in the right front position. this has resulted in the seat being secured to the vehicle by only the other three positions, and the seat wobbles back and forth. the vehicle is now unsafe to drive. in a collision, the failure of this seat is assured.

Took my 2002 jeep grand cherokee into dealership to fix a window. when i picked it up they had changed some part that was a recall on my heated seats. the heated seats then burned out a module and the dealership said that it was not their problem and that it would cost $200.00 per seat to fix. i couldn't believe it. obviously i now have seats that only heat on high.

My drivers seat has broken off of my car offering no support in the event of an accident. the bracket that holds the seat onto the car broke at the base where the bolts hold it onto the car. if just sitting in the seat breaks it how well will this hold up in the event of an accident? getting into an accident at a highway speed could totally break the seat off of the car and offer no help in the event of a crash. in my opinion the seat should never break off of the car. the seat and the seatbelt are the only things offering me support in the event of an accident. i have had older cars before this one with more miles that have never had this problem. *tr

2002 jeep grand cherokee overland 10 way heated power memory seat . the original seat heater element burnt up in winter of 2006 . the mechanic who fixed the car said that there was a noticeable burn marks on the leather underside of the seat cushion. the replacement unit burnt again in 2008. i then decided against paying for the repair again. now chrysler has recalled over a 100000 jeeps for seat problem under recall j17. i am told by chrysler my 2002 is not involved in the recall. i feel if it is not, it should be. apparently they have a problem also since the original repair was only 100 dollars and when it happened the second time it was over 300 dollars. *tr

My son's 2002 jeep grand cherokee driver's seat started wobbling and then completely broke loose from the frame. he is 240 lbs and was just driving normally. over time ... the wobbling gradually got worse. the seat completely broke loose as he was accelerating after waiting for a stop light. i removed the seat to see what was wrong and saw that both brackets that are welded to the front rod that runs parallel with the front of the drivers seat were cracked and the front bolt on the door side of the drivers seat ripped right through the flimsy metal bracket on the base of the seat. this structural defect is life threatening. he almost fell backwards into the back seat. had there been other cars coming at this intersection, he would not have been able to react. i checked the internet and saw that this seat/structural defect on jeeps goes back to 1999. how can the nhtsa and jeep/chrysler ignore this problem for years? this should be a safety recall. jeep should be held responsible for fixing this problem now. given all the blogs related to this issue ... they sure won't win in court. *tr

Approximately mid january, the driver's side heated seat cushion overheated and caught fire. luckily turning off the switch extinguished the fire. however it left a couple of inch long burn mark in the leather seat cover. we had been noticing hot spots in the heating element, and my wife had placed a fleece hood on the seat to sit on. this also received some melting but saved her from any burns. discussion with family and friends lead to the discovery of a recall involving jeep heated seats. i contacted my local dealership and was informed that my vehicle did not fall under the recall guidelines. recall was for '03 & '04 models, i have a '02. i asked if they would cover the repairs anyway as the problem was the same, they declined. i then contacted chrysler/jeep by phone. i received the same response from a representative and the supervisor. when i asked about an appeals process they said i had just been through it by talking to the supervisor. my understanding of the '03/'04 recall is that both driver and passenger seats and seat back heating elements would be replaced due to potential failure. i am concerned that just fixing the broken part would leave the possibility of this occurring on the other seat also. i have not replaced this as yet. we are just not using the heated seats. i am in the process of checking on various replacement options and prices such as factory parts, replacement with aftermarket parts, etc. i wonder what options are available besides paying for this repair myself? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at an unknown speed, the seat frame spontaneously failed and allowed the seat to suddenly retract backwards. the failure increased the risk of a crash. the dealer stated that the entire seat frame needed to be replaced at the cost of over $400. he is in the process of having the seats repaired. secondly, the power windows worked intermittently. the dealer replaced the window regulators. thirdly, he noticed that fluid from the heater coil leaked into the front passenger side of the vehicle. the manufacturer would not assume any responsibility for the repair because the vehicle exceeded the warranty. the failure and current mileages were 94,000.

The seat heater in my '02 jeep grand cherkoo overland stopped working. i peeled back the leather covering to discover a wire connecting 2 heating elements had shorted out where it is pinched by a spring tension rod and significantly burnt the seat cushion and melted part of the leather. *tr

On january 3, 2007, minutes after turning on the passenger side heated seat, it got extremely hot and was unable to be sat on, it produced smoke, and a burning smell was observed. i believe this could have been a fire had it not been turned off quickly. my son was in the passenger seat and he raised his butt from the seat screaming about the heat. i immediately turned the heater off, pulled over, he jumped out of the vehicle, and we waited for some time for the seat to cool down before proceeding onward to school. i am afraid to allow anyone to sit in that seat until it is properly repaired. *jb

Engine light came on my jeep i took it to the dealership and they informed me the light is from a malfunction with the gas cap seal. also the heater and a/c don't work and i had them look into it they said the main device inside the dash was malfunctioning and want to charge me over $850. also my seat heaters don;t work anymore and again they said the heating pad failed. they refuse to repair the malfunctioning parts stating it's not cover in the warranty that ended 1 and a 1/2 month ago

Purchased november 2001, had two recalls for fuel system within two months, dealer told me there was previous recall fixed before i purchased. engine safety warning light has come on and stayed on several days on seven (7) separate occasions. dealer claims not to worry cannot figure out why. plus seat heater went out and had to be replaced, interior heater stopped working except defrost. i believe they are all related and is why the engine safety warning light keeps coming on. also to note--vehicle sways back and forth over small bumps, like riding a small boat in rough water. *nlm
