Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.

The front brakes on the 2002 jeep grand cherokee (laredo) had a heating problem that was warping the brake rotor. jeep apparently issued a technical service bulletin to its authorized repair facilities indicating that the rotors, pads, and calipers were generating excessive heat because not enough gas was being vented off during braking. the tsb advised to replaced the rotors, pads, and calipers. when we contacted our local jeep dealer about some vibration in the drive train during braking, we were simply told that the brake pads needed to be replaced. further questions led us to the root of the problem, which was the topic of the tsb. jeep claimed it was not a problem, and they said as it was related to the brakes, it was no longer a warranty item. the owner of the dealership told me that they were seeing this problem on a lot of 2002's. i feel that they are not telling consumers what the problem is, they are just replacing the items, billing the consumer for the cost of the rotors, and calling it good. in my opinion, a properly manufactured system should not lead to brake rotor warping under normal operation of the vehicle. this jeep has 26,000 miles on it, and the pads show the amount of wear i would expect at this stage. when i questioned jeep corporate about the issue, they advised that since no recall has been issued, they see no need to cover the cost of the replacement. i believe that they are quietly replacing these brake calipers, pads, and rotors without telling the consumer, just so that no complaints are filed, and then, no recall. brakes are a crucial safety factor in a family vehicle, and my complaint is that jeep should stand behind their product better. this clearly is a manufacturing/design flaw, which they even recognize (thus, the tsb).*ak

Gas pedal depressed during braking when wearing boots or larger size shoes resulting in acceleration instead of braking. several times i have pressed on the brake only to have my right portion of the tread on my size 11 construction boot was also pressing gas pedal causing the truck to accelerate. gas pedal and brake pedal seem too close together. this is my third grand cherokee('93, '96, recent '02) and only this '02 seem to have this problem. this is probably the cause of others reporting accelerating symptoms.

Jeep gc 2002-had rotors, pads and calipers replaced at 12,660 miles because of violent shaking during braking on highways at speeds of over 40 mph, had to replace everything again at 23,989 miles and now at my own cost. manager stated that the rotors were blue and that someone has been riding on the brakes all the time and that is why they are worped (blue from high temperature). that is not the case, i do regular driving in the city and on highway. please investigate as i have found other jeep owners with the same problems all over the united states on the jeep internet forums.

The rotors in my grand cherokee have failed early on my 2002. i had to have them replaced--under 5000 miles--then at 22000 they failed again and this time they cut them down--now at 35000, i have to have them replaced. these are chrysler / mopar parts--this is a jeep--like a truck--so why is this a problem--not only i have had this problem--when speaking with fullerton, in somerville nj, i was told by the service manager that it has been a problem and even his wife's jeep did it--however since he replaced with a non chrysler/mopar part, he has not seen any continuing problems. i feel that these parts are defective and since this is the 3rd time of this happening, i am annoyed. i called the chrysler consumer line and i was told that if i had called before the vehicle was repaired, that maybe some of the cost could have been adjusted--this is after the fact- can anything be done?*ak

Driving my 2002 jeep grand cherokee on 4/15/2012, i approached a stop sign and proceeded to apply the brakes. as i applied the brake pedal, it functioned as normal for maybe 2-3 seconds. the brake pedal then lost it's pressure and dropped to the floorboard. i pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and opened the hood. no evidence of brake fluid was visually apparent at the master cylinder, though the fluid was approx. 1/2 low in the reservoir. looking under the vehicle at each wheel to see if brake fluid leakage was evident at any of the caliper(s), i noticed brake fluid leaking from the stainless steel brake line fastened along the frame rail on the driver's side of the vehicle. there was no evidence of corrosion or damage of any kind, the brake lines were still bright and shiney, the way stainless appears, and there was no evidence of rust or corrosion on the frame of the vehicle either. i cannot verify that the leak was indeed coming from the brake line, as the vehicle was not on a lift for a better visual inspection. i'm questioning if the brake system has been a problem with other jeep vehicles and if anything has been documented information concerning this issue.

When applying the brakes, the brake pedal would pumped up and down and the steering wheel would shimmy up and down and to the left and right. the higher the speed the worse the problem. when i brought it to the dealership i insisted that the service manager take a ride with me. he only had to drive it a short distance before he knew exactly what the problem was. he said the rotors were warped. i asked if that was normal, especially with such low mileage. he told me that it was an ongoing problem that chrysler new about. when the rotors heated up they were not cooling down properly due to a defect which in turn causes the rotors to warp. he said they instructed to tell owners that the problem was due to wear and tear and that it was not covered by the warranty, therefore passing the expense on to the customer. he also told me that if the customer complained to chrysler, and only then, would chrysler fix the problem at no charge and would put the repairs under a good will warranty. the service manager said he would not put me through the trouble and automatically put it under the good will warranty. especially since i have had numerouse other problems with the jeep since the first day i drove it off the lot. i've had the check engine light come on 4 times. each time it was a different deffective part. i've also had electrical problems which caused the dome lights to flash on and off, all sorts of beeping noises and numerous other distractions in the interior. it's also left me stranded on the new jersey turnpike *ak

Prior to the accident i had noticed on a couple of occasions that when i tried to park at a slow speed, pressed the brake, the car continued to move forward. i took my foot off the brake and reapplied it, which stopped the forward movement. then i was able to park the car without incident. on the day of the accident (5/22/02), i noticed a car 40-50 yards in front of me half way into a right turn. i applied the brakes and the car slowed down and within 10-15 yards of the vehicle in front of me, i realized that the car was moving forward even though my foot was on the brake. in order to avoid hitting the other car flush from the rear, i swerved the jeep to the left and struch his left rear light a glancing blow. at that point i stopped the car by reapplying my foot to the brake. i was traveling approximately 5 mph. i took the car in to buerge chrysler jeep, the brakes system was examined by my service man who agreed with me that the brake pedal is very soft and went all the way to the floor. i asked him to see if the brake fluid was low. he said that chrysler would bring in an independant investigator. on wed. 5/29/02, i received a call from the investigator who said that his report would be submitted in 10 days. i was told that the special investigator said the car could be released to me and that, in fact, there were no problems that he could find. i asked the service manager to reexamine the car and drive with me, and he said that the biggest problem in these situations were a defect is intermittant and is not always obvious. one other incident occurred when i depressed the brake, it made an unusual wooshing sound which i had not heard before and the brake pedal depressed to the floor.*ak

Tl*- the contact received a safety recall notice about the fan in her 2002 jeep grand cherokee in november and called the dealer and they have not yet completed the repairs. the vehicle has been placed on a waiting list. also, there was a brake failure while driving over 40 mph. the steering wheel would vibrate so much that it felt as if it were about to come off. this incident happened over 300 times. the brakes were faulty since she bought the vehicle, but the dealer always told her that nothing was wrong, even though there was a safety bulletin in place. after the warranty expired the failure was diagnosed and the cost of the repair was $1500. the contact was charged for several front end alignments that never seem to alleviate the failure. also, there was recurring problem with the motor of the rear windows. the contact had one motor replaced at a cost of $300 and will need to replace the second motor. *ak

Need full brake replacement( calipers, rotors, pads) due to pulsing in the front end when brakes are applied moderately. many people are experiencing the same problems. have the same problem with my chrysler concorde and have complained to chrysler many times to no avail. they simply use low quality parts. will never buy chrysler again. *jb

While my daughter was driving our 2002 jeep grand cherokee on slippery roads she slid into an intersection and was hit by another vehicle. my daughter claimed she was going slowly and when the brakes were applied felt a shudder and the car did not stop. to check her story we took the car to a brake shop. they told us the brakes were defective. they could tell by the very uneven wear. 75% warn on 1 side of both front brakes. 25% wear on the other side . *ak

The vehicle has been in the shop, 3 times for grinning-growling noises from the front-end, rough ride and brake problems. the tires was balanced twice and one brake calipers was replaced on 14 oct. 2002.(several prior visits before for brake related noises and vibration in front floor-pan of vehicle) i was informed that jeep was coming out with a new power steering gear box to resolve the problems with the existing gear box. todate, this problem with the grinning-growling-howling noises still exist. no resolution with servicing dealer. dt

Car vibrates when brakes applied at highway speeds, is also causing uneven feathering/wear on front tires. i contacted murphy motor service dept and was advised that chrysler knows the caliper warp in this model of cherokee and both the calipers and rotors will need to be replaced. there is no recall on this as yet but parts are backed ordered country wide 6000 parts in all. this should be a recall and chrysler needs to get this part availabe now to avoid further damage or accidents due to this failure. i have been reading other complaints on this model of jeep and since 1995 they have had repeated brake problems which go unaddressed and costing owners a lot of money to fix or get to the problems. chrysler obviously is not responding delibertly. someone needs to investigate the brake problems with jeep grand cherokee over the past 7 years and find out why they can not be fixed once and for all. the consumer is not being informed of the potential brake problems and thus can not make and informed decision when purchasing a new vehicle . in the end money out of consumers pocekts and no protection from fraud by the manufacturer. dt

I am concerned that jeep has under engineered the brake system for this model of car. i have three colleagues in my office who have the same model and all of them have had to have rotors re-surfaced or replaced more than once. they warp repeatedly. i have read consumer groups forums on the internet and it is happening a lot. this is my first time to have all four rotors resurfaced as they were all warped. i have spoken to a jeep service person and they know of the problem. however, jeep washes its hands of the problem after one year or 12, 000 miles. this is a design fault of a vital safety component and needs to be addressed. *ak

After reading almost all complaints with other 2002 jeep grand cherokees, i have to put in my two cents worth. i can relate to almost every complaint that there is. i just had both my front left and right window regulators replaced a month and a half apart, one just today at $327.00 with my employee discount. (i work for a car dealership) last month, i have had almost $500.00 worth of repairs for my power steering pump problems. i have had my brake rotors turned and resurfaced and am in need of doing it again. then on the other hand, i have experienced problems with my dual control panel not working correctly which i have not have repaired yet because i don't have the money for that one and didn't know at the time that it was a problem. then when my jeep was under warranty i have had the air conditioner compressor replaced, new battery(for hard or no starting), amongst other repairs that i can't think of at the moment. i have also been experiencing hard starts with my truck and also the transmission not engaging or jumping (accelerating) while switching gears that the jeep dealer has not been able to recognize as a problem. i feel that those new chrysler commercials are not up to par as american and german engineering. those germans know how to build vehicles in the first place and help repair them as the problem seem necessary. *nm

We have had 3 front brake rotor incidents in 3 years with a caliper/rotor replacement @ 8,000 miles. front rotor resurfaced somewhere around 20,000 miles and replaced again at my own expense at 28000 miles. the problem was severe enough to frighten my wife (she is the primary driver of the 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo) because of severe steering wheel shake and brake pedal pulsation when the brakes are applied. most severe when entering the off ramp on the interstate. i kept the old rotors that the dealer installed at 8,000 miles. the dealer was not willing to replace the brake components the last time saying that they are wear items and i was past the 3 year warranty. obviously there is a heat problem with the brake components. most likely cause would be calipers failing to release or some type of restriction to the brake fluid returning to the master cylinder. i know of one other owner of a jeep grand cherokee with similar problems. *nm

Brakes have been replaced on jeep grand cherokee (2002) twice since purchase new. both times wear was uneven and symptoms were extreme shaking while braking. the dealer did not charge for the brake repairs, because he said they would bill daimler chrysler as they know there is a problem with the brakes. the third time the brakes began shaking i spoke with the dealer for repair. they informed me that the car manufacturer extended the brake warranty up to three years and 36000 miles because of the defect but would not be paying for replacements after that time. i am now expected to replace these horrible brakes on my own. i called the company and got no assistance. i am aware that a recall was placed on previous jeep brakes, and i am informing you of these facts so it could begin an investigation again. thank you. *jb

Jeep started shaking when brakes were applied. it was noticeable but not horrible. i live in colorado and went up into the mountains where brakes were applied more frequently. had a car load of girl scouts on a camping trip. when the brakes heated up, the car started shaking so violently when the brakes were applied that it was difficult to control the car. the girls were scared to death and the shaking caused me to actually pull over and put the girls out of the car to ride with other people in our group. i have never experienced anything like it in my life. i was in tears by the time we got to the camp site and all the way home it did the same thing. i never got the car over 30 mph in a 2 hour drive home. the car does not shake as violently if the brakes are not that hot, but it definitely shakes substantially. had the rotors repaired but the brake pads were fine. this is the second set of rotors i have put on in the past 18 months.*jb
