'scraping' noise in front end when turning. unable to find cause, southview chevrolet said it was 'normal' in all jeeps. after searching the web, i found a discussion page for jeeps. after much research, i was told the fluid in the front axle was not full. i went to another jeep dealers, explained the problem and showed them the report. it was resolved and there were no futher issues with the axle. southview chev. is now defunct after the owner cheated clients out of millions of dollars. several more issues with my 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland are to follow... *tr

2002 jeep grand cherokee. steering wheel began making strange sounds. steering gear and associated parts were replaced. shortly after, strange sounds returned, the steering began to become completely unassisted at low speeds for a brief second. the problem causes quite a scare and causes temporary loss of control. this is associated with low speed idle. damage is imminent without repair. this problem is well documented among jeep chat rooms. second well documented problem among jeep owners. faulty power window units that fail without warning and cause window to be stuck up or down. this causes driver to be forced to drive with open non responding windows in a variety of weather conditions, obvious safety and health hazard. third chronic hazard well known to jeep owners as well as jeep. the blend doors on a/c consistently fail right after warranty period. this causes a failure of the defroster and obvious danger, as well as drivers are forced to drive with constant unheated airflow until costly repair. jeep is well aware of these problems but refuses to acknowledge a consistent problem and offer correction for all affected vehicles. *nm

Dt: the consumer stated that there was a nhtsa engineering analysis ea05020 concerning the engine and engine cooling fan. the consumer's vehicle manifested the same problems as indicated in this analysis. the fan of the motor exploded, resulting in extensive damage to the radiator. the vehicle was towed to a dealership, where it is currently being repaired for this problem. *ak (11/23/05) the steering was noisy and would grind on high idle, the vehicle would shake when braking due to the front disc pads wearing low and the front rotors and the pinion seal leaked. *sc

The steering column vibrates when turning the wheels (usually at lower speeds). took it to the dealer 3 times, first time they replaced the hoses, second time replaced the steering column, and the third time they stated this was a problem with a piece of metal in the column that vibrates due to a small gap within the steering column. i was told this would be a few months, however, 6 months have now passed and i still have the problem. one side note, it seems to do it less in colder weather! *nlm

I noticed power steering fluid leaking from my car. the pump was replaced and fluid continues to leak. when i had my mechanic ask chrysler about it, the rep said that there is a defect in the actual hose which causes fluid to leak. in my opinion if chrysler knows about this, and a possible loss of fluid while driving, why don't they fix it. *nm

When turning right, and only right, there is a rubbing or squealing noise coming from the steering column. it occurs after the car has been running and only when slowly turning the wheel. daimler chrysler is aware of the problem and has a hydraulic kit set up to fix it. the dealership will repair the problem but the consumer must pay for it. *nm
STEERING - HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST - PUMP
08/17/20066910/05/2003
After reading almost all complaints with other 2002 jeep grand cherokees, i have to put in my two cents worth. i can relate to almost every complaint that there is. i just had both my front left and right window regulators replaced a month and a half apart, one just today at $327.00 with my employee discount. (i work for a car dealership) last month, i have had almost $500.00 worth of repairs for my power steering pump problems. i have had my brake rotors turned and resurfaced and am in need of doing it again. then on the other hand, i have experienced problems with my dual control panel not working correctly which i have not have repaired yet because i don't have the money for that one and didn't know at the time that it was a problem. then when my jeep was under warranty i have had the air conditioner compressor replaced, new battery(for hard or no starting), amongst other repairs that i can't think of at the moment. i have also been experiencing hard starts with my truck and also the transmission not engaging or jumping (accelerating) while switching gears that the jeep dealer has not been able to recognize as a problem. i feel that those new chrysler commercials are not up to par as american and german engineering. those germans know how to build vehicles in the first place and help repair them as the problem seem necessary. *nm

Power steering pump has failed for the 4th time in last year. have now learned this is a known problem by chrysler and is due to poor design that has the power steering pump driving an auxiliary cooling fan. results in loss of power steering and extremely reduced drivable. *tr

This is my 4th jeep. here is a little background on this issue. i purchased a 2002 jeep grand cherokee, the overland edition. the dealership pushed buying a used certified jeep vehicle! they mentioned the extended warranty that would take care of any issues that the jeep had during the last years of my ownership. i went in the dealership looking to purchase a new vehicle but they told me all the added benefits / value from buying from the used jeep facility! the warranty: as mentioned i purchased the warranty sold by jeep at the local dealership. the service agreement that was sold by the dealership went bankrupt! gary miller chrysler jeep isuzu located in erie, pa sold this to me. my 1st issue was when i decided to take the vehicle in because of a vibration while driving. i was made aware that the company was bankrupt when tying to call and find out what information will be needed when i go to the local jeep dealership in kansas city. furthermore i mentioned to the jeep dealership that pushed the contract that i am wiling to purchase the best contract to make sure i do not have an issue with my new vehicle in the future. the constant issues: i have now taken in my jeep for 6 visits! i have only included some of the payments (see the additional paperwork) but you can see a trend here. this jeep had been nothing but a problem since i purchased the vehicle! i am now stuck replacing the steering pump for the 2nd time! i have to pay for the replacement and live without a vehicle. i am out several thousand dollars and still have to take this vehicle (that jeep pushed on me) to the service shop about every 6 months. i just started driving my vehicle from the last service repair (i am getting very familiar to the local jeep dealerships) and still the item is not fixed and my jeep is leaking oil all over our company driveway. this vehicle is a lemon and the company that made the vehicle sold me a bankrupt contract. *nm

When turning left, and left only, i hear a squealing sound in my 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the noise does not occur initially, but only after the engine has been running for a little while. it sounds a lot like a belt squeal. i took it to the dealer 3 times, and they always say there is nothing wrong, but i know that not all jeeps make this noise. even slightly turning the wheel will cause the noise. the dealer suggested a power steering hose, but then said that wasn't the problem. no changes have been made. squeal gets louder the longer the engine runs.*ak

While driving at 65 mph engine failed. as a result, power steering and brakes malfunctioned. *ak took vehicle to mechanic but they couldn't find anything wrong. two hundred miles later, the same thing, nothing was found. at 6133 miles it happened again. consumer took vehicle to another mechanic. three different mechanics and no one could find anything. problem still exist. *ph

Our vehicle has a growling noise in the steering system. this occurs occasionally when turning the wheels to the right, whether driving forward or backwards. dealer 1 took the car for a day an reported that parts would have to be ordered. they would call when parts arrived. after several fruitless attempt to determine if parts had arrived, car was taken to dealer 2 whose service manager immediately recognized the symptoms and replaced the power steering hoses and valves. on the second visit, nothing was corrected as dealer 2 checked the steering wheel area valves and bearings. dealer 2 said that jeep engineers are aware of the problem and expect to have a fix in a month or two. first purchased in june 2002 and noticed within one week. noise continues to be present. is there a steering and control issue looming on the horizon?. *jb
