Failure causes windshield to fog up and driver cannot see roadway. all ac and heater functions fail. this is the 5th failure after reepeated repairs. the vehicle is unsafe to drive.

The defroster blows cold air randomly while driving in the winter. causes the windshield to fog, then freeze while driving. this is a very common issue and easy fix, but requires removing the entire dashboard assembly. to replace a $5 piece of plastic. this is a common issue and a safety problem and should be covered by the dealer.

2002 jeep grand cherokee limited. may 2010 front passenger side window fell down while driving. march 2011 back driver side window fell down while driving with my 4 year old daughter on that side. went to dealer said it would cost $800 to fix both windows. the way it sounds this is happening alot. it needs to be recalled. had to drive 30 minutes in 20 degree weather home with daughter in car. something things to happen asap. to much money to be spending ever 6 months to a year.

Same common problem that has occurred on thousands of chrysler/jeep grand cherokee's. the blend door actuators that regulate hot and cold air fail so that heat stops working entirely. this also means the defrost stops working which is a major safety hazard when driving in wet and cold climates like the winter months in washington state. i recently drove over one of our mountain passes and could not see anything because it was snowing and i could not defrost the windshield. the repair costs $1600 at a chrysler dealership.

I don't understand how the nhtsa can ingnore the problem with the hvac blend door assembly unit on the wj jeeps. how can having no heat and no defroster not be a safety issue. i live in maine and can not afford the estimated $1200 repair to fix this widely known defect. try driving in 15 degree whether with snow on the roads and no defroster. guess what happens? your breath causes the windows to fog hence to the point on no visibility. i slid offthe road after hitting a snow bank on the side because i could not see and was trying to scrape the quarter inch on frost on my window off. this is ridiculous chrysler needs to do something.

The heater on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee only works approx. 25% of the time. the person i purchased it from said it only happened to her every so often, but that it had gotten worse. since i've owned it, it has continued to get progressively worse. i'm concerned as winter is approaching and i'll need to see out the windshield and will need a heat defroster for it living here in nebraska. this is a long known problem and i'm shocked that chrysler has not recalled this problem as it poses major safety implications. i've worked on cars for 15 years and have never heard of a heater going bad. as any mechanic out there, heaters don't go bad unless the whole heater core is bad, in which case i'd have a floor full of anti-freeze, which i do not have. my jeep has not lost an ounce of fluid and runs at perfect operating temperature. it's an obvious electrical problem that jeep should be held accountable for! there are numerous posts on numerous forms with hoards of people having the same problem that jeep is charging $1500 to fix. talk about a scam!!! *tr

In the fall of 2008, my son and my wife exited the front of the vehicle and closed their doors. within a second or two, both of them heard a bang but saw nothing wrong, as they were both at the front of the vehicle and unable to see their side windows. after returning to the vehicle, my son noticed his window was not up as he had left it. he was unable to raise the window normally so a cold trip home followed. a quick investigation revealed a failed window regulator. since i was not going to pay someone a ridiculous amount to replace the part, i did it myself after finding a window regulator at a local parts store. since the vehicle was not operating when the failure of the window regulator occurred, safety was not an issue relative to operation. however, since the failure was undetected at the time, or if it had happened after walking away from the vehicle, there was obviously a safety issue relative to an unsecured vehicle. the vehicle was open to anyone or anything wanting to enter it. it also created a potential for further damage from inclement weather. in august 2009, the driver side window regulator failed. the driver and front passenger side windows had been lowered to help cool the inside prior to driving. when the windows were raised, only the front passenger window responded. the driver side window would not raise. the vehicle was driven home where i replaced the window regulator. the same part failed in both instances. this part is obviously insufficient for its purpose. a failure of the window regulator and subsequent dropping window could easily cause enough distraction to initiate a moving incident. whoever owns the jeep trademark these days needs to fix this problem and issue a recall before there is an accident, a driver returns to a ransacked vehicle or worse, there is a car jacking by an unknown and uninvited passenger. *tr

While driving home last year i rolled my driver side window up and heard a loud bang. i at first thought that someone had hit my vehicle with a large rock but then the window dropped down into the door. when i got home, i went online and found quite a few complaints about the window regulators failing in chrysler grand cherokees and the fact that chrysler is aware of the issue but refuses to cover the repair. i also found that these problems could have been prevented if they'd just used a 25 cent piece of metal instead of the plastic piece they used. because i could not afford the $400 + it would cost to have this repaired, i found the instructions online and bought the replacement regulator and replaced it myself. however, all the complaints i read about say that all the windows will fail at some point. i have neither the time or even the money to get them all replaced. i think this is something that chrysler should address. had i been on the interstate when this happened, it quite possible that the bang of the piece failing would have been enough to cause me distraction and lead to an accident. *tr

My window regulators keep failing one at a time in my 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the first time it happened on a major highway and there was a loud bang in which i thought i hit something. then my window fell in the door providing me no protection on i-95. most recently, in june 2009, my passenger window failed during a major electrical storm (evening of june 11, 2009 in wilmington, de) leaving myself and car soaked with no protection. *tr

Three of four power window regulators have failed suddenly and without notice, all within a year of each other with the most recent being last week. each time it occurs, there is a popping sound followed by the window dropping into the door. i have so far been fortunate to only have this happen when driving at speeds <30mph and without my child or dog being in the vehicle; however, there's still that 4th window with the same faulty plastic component that has been failing. i replaced the first window regulator at full cost at the dealership when it happened last year. when the second one went out, i didn't fix it because of the cost and the fact that it was a rear window. after the third one failed, i got suspicious. the service manager at the local dealership has stated that he has seen this issue on numerous occasions mostly with the liberty model, but on the grand cherokee as well. it is obvious that chrysler is aware of the issue; however, each agent i spoke with on their help line tried to downplay the issue like it was a freak occurrence and that there was no reason for a recall. based on the research i'm now seeing online and the comments from the service manager, i know this is not the case. *tr

My 2002 jeep cherokee started blowing heat only on the drivers side and cold air on the passenger side. the windows were constantly fogging up making driving only possible by lowering the windows to reduce fogging. now, i have no heat and the mechanic says it is my blower doors and that this happens to alot of jeeps. we had to abandon the vehicle during a snow / freezing rain even last week and then couldn't drive it for the next several days due to freezing conditions. i have replaced the heater core due to fogging windows 2 years ago and the ac had to be charged constantly to stay cool. this is dangerous to drive and you freeze during cold times. i always have to make sure precip in not expected whenever we drive this vehicle during winter months. jeep owners need help with this...! now my passenger window wont go up either. *tr

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited with 84,400 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a blend air door is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems. *tr

Today while driving my 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland, the heater stopped sending warm air to the driverside defroster and heat outlets (has dual zone controls). i suspected it was a problem with the flow doors which control the amount of warm air to enter the passenger cabin. upon researching the problem on the internet, it appears this is an identified defect affecting many jeep grand cherokee owners. the problem is apparently not correctable without replacing the flow doors and door actuators. i called the local dealership and they acknowledge it is a known problem and have received a technical service bulletin on the issue. estimated repair cost is $1100 plus. my opinion is that since it is a known manufacturing defect, it should be covered through a recall and at no expense to the owner. also the fix provided by chrysler dealership is known to fail prematurely after short period of operation. *tr

Prior to the problem the vehicle performed as designed and then suddenly a snap noise came from the dash area and then the windows fogged while i was driving. the failure was a plastic component of the climate control vent system and the consequences are no heating of the drivers compartment and compromised comfort & visibility while driving. the only solution that the jeep dealer offers is to replace the badly designed expensive parts with equally inferior expensive oem replacement parts which are inevitably going to break again. diagnostic / repair quote $1600.00 i sought advice / info regarding my problem and discovered on my own a company in texas which makes a reliable / permanent solution for the jeep grand cherokee poorly designed dual control vent & recirc systems. i bought an after mkt repair kit from a texas co. heatertreater.com for $225. the superior designed parts are impervious to breakage like the oem jeep components and will not repeat this trouble in my vehicle like the original parts. please review heatertreater.com as useful info as to how jeep engineers should have built it and to see demonstration of the problem. my old parts are available for you to review. *tr

My 2002 grand cherokee suddenly has no heat. the defroster works randomly and sometimes shuts down only blowing cold, outside air causing the window to fog up with no warning. after researching this issue online there are thousands of complaints about this, the dealer fix is to take off the dash ($1000+ in labor) to fix a $20 part. there are parts available online to do the fix yourself for $100. seems to me that not only does jeep know there is a factory default with their jeeps, they rip people off by charging exorbitant amounts of $$ to fix something simple. i searched through your database and there are pages and pages of complaints for the same issue. at this point i am going to fix it myself because i cant go through the winter without heat, but im sure as heck not going to take it to the dealer and get charged $2500. and im definitely never buying another gm car again. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at an unknown speed, the seat frame spontaneously failed and allowed the seat to suddenly retract backwards. the failure increased the risk of a crash. the dealer stated that the entire seat frame needed to be replaced at the cost of over $400. he is in the process of having the seats repaired. secondly, the power windows worked intermittently. the dealer replaced the window regulators. thirdly, he noticed that fluid from the heater coil leaked into the front passenger side of the vehicle. the manufacturer would not assume any responsibility for the repair because the vehicle exceeded the warranty. the failure and current mileages were 94,000.

2002 jeep grand cherokee. blower controller connector is overheating and melting connector and now not working. replacement with new connector is possible from dealer with morpar repair kit #05102406aa . however... this does not fix the problem as it will happen again and again. this is due to strain on the blower motor drawing high amps because the common problem with this jeep is with the ac blend doors which was the first problem for me....as with many jeep cherokee owners. it costs over $1000 to fix a simple problem with the blend door because the entire dash has to be removed! so, the blend doors are a common problem with an expensive fix, and if you don't fix it, the blower motor and controller will overheat, leaving you with no air control to remove moisture in damp weather. the controller could overheat, possibly cause a fire, or if the controller and blower don't work, you have no way of clearing foggy windows....bad thing! very frustrated as this should be part of a major recall. why should so many jeep owners have to pay for a simple, yet expensive fix? *tr

2002 grand cherokee dual climate control lost heat in both zones. *ts the consumer stated the problem was due to the weak blend and recirculation doors in the hvac system. the doors are turned by a motor attached to the bottom of the door at the end of a hinge shaft. the motor stops turning when there is enough physical resistance from the door stopping against its housing. this puts stress on the shaft/door junction and over time strips the shaft so that it spins almost independently of the door. the motor then experiences little resistance and keeps turning. *jb

I am paying for a 2002 jeep grand cherokee that i purchased used in 12-06. i have had a problem with the heater 6 months after i purchased it used, which the dealer would not repair. i called chrysler and no one returned my call until this month. i received a recall about the fan blades and took it into the shop. prior to the shop appointment the check engine light came on, i asked the service tech to check why the heater was not working and why the check engine light was on. he called me to tell me that the recall part was on back order and that the blend motor and doors on the heater were broken and that the leak detection pump had gone out, which would prevent me from getting it inspected. he also told me that the heater plugs were melted and it needed a wiring harness replacement. the dash gets very hot which has melted the plugs but no heat is blowing into the vehicle. this could cause a fire inside the vehicle. also the leak detection pump is an emissions problem and per federallaw has to be operating in order to pass inspection. i spoke with chrysler and asked them to repair the vehicle and they laughed at me, telling me this vehicle had been out of warranty for 4.5 years. (it was out when i purchased it.)and if it were still under warranty then they would fix it. i also asked why if the recall had been out since 2006 then why was i just now getting it, and the part was on back order which tells me that i have been driving an unsafe vehicle.he also told me that the heater being broken was not a safety issue, it is due to not having heat to defrost windows and plugs melting could cause a fire. i have checked the web and there are so many web sites that talk about these problems with the jeeps that go back to 1998- 2005. please help me i am out of work due the medical problems and i have a very tight budget. i have contacted the n.c. attorney generals office, consumer affairs, chrysler, nat. assoc. consumer affairs. at this point nothing has been done.-sharon *tr

In the fall of 2007, the heat on the passenger side of 2002 jeep grand cherokee stopped working. i did some online research and this problem was so common that i easily found plenty of people with the exact same problem that were able to self-diagnose the problem using the jeeps internal computer to output the system faults. using the same method to enter the azc self-diagnostic mode, the climate control display output the system fault codes 52-54-56. since most of the consumers i've run into with this problem get that exact code, or have had the same problem diagnosed by a jeep dealership service department, i already know that it will cost anywhere from $1000+ to be repaired, the majority of it being labor as the entire instrument panel assembly has to be removed. to address this problem, daimler-chrysler released tsb 2400104 - new hvac sub-assembly replaces blend or recirc door components. each new sub-assembly consists of several individual components. the new sub-assemblies improve component reliability. it is recommended that the respective sub-assembly be installed if a blend air door(s), a recirculation door, a door link, or a sub-assembly housing requires replacement. these new parts cost less than $200 according to the bulletin, but i find it hard to believe that daimler-chrysler expects their customers to pick up the tab on a design flaw. especially a design flaw that is so labor intensive that even though the parts are less than $200, the final bill will be more than $1,000. a job so consuming that it wouldn't be wise to have it serviced by anything but a jeep service technician. not to mention some repair shops wont even take on the job due to the time and possible accountability of such a project. this is a major safety issue; not only because you lose the ability to defrost but of the effects extreme cold can have on a body too. the nhtsb needs to address this with daimler chrylser. *tr

This is in regards to the blend door issue on jeep grand cherokee models that have the dual climate control. the fact that this issue is imminent in nearly every one of these vehicles is disturbing enough in itself, but what is downright unacceptable is that the average cost to repair ranges from 1000.00-1300.00!! this issue is so prevalent that 3 different jeep site forums have had so many jeep owners bring this up that it has become a posted issue. i have recently purchased a 2002 model and, knock on wood, have not experienced this issue. i believe it actually may have already been taken care of, but in the event that i am wrong, i can only hope and pray that dc/jeep has stepped up and done what is right, and, at the very least, as a recall/tsb, covers a large portion of this repair. *tr

Brought my 02 jeep grand cherokee in november 2007 had problems with the heat mode blowing cold out the passenger side vents. to stop this and make the passenger side feel the heat i had to tape up the vents on the passenger side. well summer of 2008 began so i remove the tape from the vents. with the ac on the air flow was weak the as was recharged the driver side blew cold, but passenger side was weak. around august turn on the ac nothing but a very weak airflow from both sides. the possible villains blend air doors and the air recirculation door. cost from dealer to repair 1,000.00 to 1,200.00 the winter of 2008/ 2009 is approaching no heat and *no defrost. could get dangerous. pleas help!!!!!!!! *tr

The heat on the passenger side of the jeep is blowing cold air in winter, even when it is set to maximum heat. the dealer told me that there is a service bulletin on the blend door and they want over $700 dollars to fix it. my question is if they know there is a problem with it from design how come they don't fix it for free and why should i pay for it when they knew they sold me a bad design. also now the ac is blowing hot air and they are telling me it is the same problem with the blend doors. this is a safety issue since in the winter i can not defrost the front windshield and have to pull over to clean the ice and fog build up from inside the window. *tr

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited and it is equipped with dual climate control. i've noticed a funny noise coming from the bottom of the dash it almost sounds like a twisting or a clapping noise. just recently i needed to turn on my heater because it was really cold out and for some reason although the temp was set all the way too high it was still blowing cold air from the driver side. however, the passenger side still worked fine. i bought this vehicle used and i know it will cost way more than i can ever afford for this repair. i have investigated this issue and understand that the problem is imminent to jeep owners. i understand that the company feels it is not a safety issue but a luxury. however it is for most of us that own a suv it is because we need to transport our families comfortably. for that is what they advertise. i have a new born child and i think it is ridicules i can not transport her in my jeep because it is to cold for her and she would be at risk of getting pneumonia, because the chrysler corporation has failed to take care of their customers. please help us in making the company fix their inadequate climate control problem and live up to their expectations. *tr

I purchased my 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited 2 years ago, and 6 months ago, the passenger side blend door actuator died as well as broke the blend door itself upon inspection. this is a problem as it takes removal of the entire dashboard, draining and refilling the ac system and draining and refilling the antifreeze. i spent greater than 10 hours working on the problem. this is not just an isolated incident as there are entire websites set up to help fix the problem (http://www.wjjeeps.com/hvac_sub_assembly.htm). there are numerous message boards relating this problem, and even a company who sells a metal replacement to the plastic part. *tr

Events leading up to failure: normal usage of vehicle cabin comfort and safety controls (air conditioning/demister) systems. failure: cabin air conditioning system now does not regulate temperature. the system cannot be made to use hot or cold air on demand. in investigating this failure, it has come to my attention that 99% of all other owners of this vehicle report experiencing a failure of the 'temperature blend control doors' within the 'a/c blend assembly'. consequences: the vehicle demister is unable to clear the front windshield of mist/fogging (effectively, depending on outside temperature). corrections: no corrections have been performed due to cost prohibitive expense to do so. the local dealerships quote a price of around $1800.00 to repair the failure, while obtaining parts and performing self-repair will cost upwards of $300.00 plus time spent. *tr

I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland that had approximately 46,000 miles at the time of incident. it was a previously owned vehicle and about 6 months after purchase, i turned on the heater and there was nothing but cold air blowing. when i went to the dealer to get it fixed, they said it could be a simple computer problem, or a major mechanical problem, where the vents get stuck. it ended up being the major one, and they said it was common for this to happen on this model jeep. they installed new blend doors and actuator motors, which cost me about $1,200. it is so costly because they have to remove the entire dash to reach the problem. the labor was $776.04 and the parts were $389.47 after it was returned, about a month later, my car wouldn't start up, because the dealer did not fully connect a wire harness back together, so it vibrated loose and wouldn't allow the keys to start the ignition. this is a safety feature of the vehicle, where the keys have to be programmed to work in the ignition. it made it so it didn't read my previously programmed working keys. i ended up being stranded about 10 miles from the dealer. thanks to aaa, they came and picked the car up, and then took it to the dealer, which they fixed that for free, on account of it being their fault. *nm

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited with 51,474 miles. i purchased this as a used car on nov 30, 2006 from a reputable (?) dealer. to my mistake, we did not check out the heat. we do live in south west fla. upon needing heat to take the dew off my windshield i found i have none. my windshield and side windows do not clear on mornings that heat would help in that situation. it is extremely dangerous as you would expect. no heat comes from anywhere. the dealer checked it out and said it was a blend air door problem and would not be covered under a used auto purchase since we declined the extended warranty. (we took it back on dec. 12,2006 to be checked out at dealer) the dealer said it was a common problem that costs a lot of money, usually over $1000 to replace. i then asked my own mechanic his opinion and he said he will not touch the repair because of the time, labor, and money involved in doing this when he thinks it is a dealer issue. if you do an internet search for blend air door problems you will find this a common problem for 2000-2004 jeeps. *jb

Several months ago i lost heat on the passengers side in my 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited 4x4 sport utility 4dr. i had been trying to save up some money to go have this fixed, and had been searching all over the internet looking on jeep' websites even, trying to figure out what was wrong with my jeep. then on friday, november 10, 2006, the driver side heat quit working during a snow storm. i left work about 5:00 pm and it was snowing and starting to freeze. the windows werent getting foggy or anything they where just icing up it got to the point where i could only see out of a little spot right where the fan blew on the window. i went 35 mph on a 65 mph speed zone because oncoming traffic would temporarily blind me. i don't live in florida, i live in montana. what are people around here suppose to do when this happens to them. stop on the side of the road to scrape the ice of their windows, as another vehicle plows over them, due to the icy road conditions. in montana we have long commutes, some people drive from red lodge all the way to billings. it takes an hour and

This is my 4th jeep. here is a little background on this issue. i purchased a 2002 jeep grand cherokee, the overland edition. the dealership pushed buying a used certified jeep vehicle! they mentioned the extended warranty that would take care of any issues that the jeep had during the last years of my ownership. i went in the dealership looking to purchase a new vehicle but they told me all the added benefits / value from buying from the used jeep facility! the warranty: as mentioned i purchased the warranty sold by jeep at the local dealership. the service agreement that was sold by the dealership went bankrupt! gary miller chrysler jeep isuzu located in erie, pa sold this to me. my 1st issue was when i decided to take the vehicle in because of a vibration while driving. i was made aware that the company was bankrupt when tying to call and find out what information will be needed when i go to the local jeep dealership in kansas city. furthermore i mentioned to the jeep dealership that pushed the contract that i am wiling to purchase the best contract to make sure i do not have an issue with my new vehicle in the future. the constant issues: i have now taken in my jeep for 6 visits! i have only included some of the payments (see the additional paperwork) but you can see a trend here. this jeep had been nothing but a problem since i purchased the vehicle! i am now stuck replacing the steering pump for the 2nd time! i have to pay for the replacement and live without a vehicle. i am out several thousand dollars and still have to take this vehicle (that jeep pushed on me) to the service shop about every 6 months. i just started driving my vehicle from the last service repair (i am getting very familiar to the local jeep dealerships) and still the item is not fixed and my jeep is leaking oil all over our company driveway. this vehicle is a lemon and the company that made the vehicle sold me a bankrupt contract. *nm

2002 grand cherokee limited has a known problem with the dual climate control system. a door in the system routinely breaks or strips as soon as the vehicle has passed the manufacturers warranty end date. one side(drivers) of the system works as advertised, however the passenger side will only blow extremely cold air. the cost to rectify this anomaly is around $800 at a jeep dealership. from reading several automotive repair forums on the internet, this problem is occurring in a very high number, probably percentage of vehicles. supposedly jeep is aware of the defective part used in the system and is not doing anything about it. at what point is an auto manufacturer required to issue a recall? is there anything consumers can do to force the maker of the vehicle to fix defective parts?. *jb

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland with 44,500 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. in addition to the fogging there is a leak of antifreeze, hazardous material, coming into the vehicle driver and passenger areas, due to defective heater core. to correct this problem, a blend air door is necessary and a new heater core at a cost of approximately $1,700 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limiteds/overlands with dual zone ventilation systems. *tr

Air blend doors located deep inside dashboard have failed on my car & thousands of others. this causes the drivers compartment to typically freeze during winter months. even though it is an admitted manufacturing defect, chrysler will not issue a recall because it is not deemed enough of a safety issue. since repairs are $1k or more, many people are putting off service or trying homemade remedies to fix the problem. thus going without the repair or trying to do it yourself you make the drivers compartment very unsafe. chrysler is making a huge profit off this repair and their service centers admit this.

*tr

My jeep grand cherokee has a bad ventilation system. this is a manufacturing defect which affects all jeep grand cherokee's manufactured with auto climate controls from 1999-2004. i have had to bring mine in for repair twice now, and it has once again failed. the levers in the ventilation ducts have plastic components which, over time, break down and crack causing cold-only or hot-only air to blow from the vents. this issue causes major fogging of the windshield at times depending upon how the levers get stuck, which is a serious and major safety concern- i have to pull over and wipe the windshield down so i can see. i lead a group comprised of over 1000 people who have formed expressly as a result of this matter; all of our vehicles are ailing, and rest assured, there are thousands more out there with this problem who probably aren't even aware our group united against daimler chrysler even exists. it would be in dc's best interest to issue a recall or settlement agreement before this turns into another class-action suit like they experienced with the 99-03 jeep grand cherokee brake rotor/caliper matter earlier in the year.

*tr

I can't believe after reading on the internet and reading the complaints on this site about this problem that nothing has been done! i own a 2002 jeep grand cherokeellimited with dual heat zone. i recently lost heat on the passenger side. now you ask how is this a safety issue? well when you have it on defrost you have heat on the driver's side and ice cold air blowing on the passenger side. (remember that when you have the defroster on the a/c pump circulates which causes very cold air to blow) now only part of your windshield is clearing up. i live in central pa where the weather is always changing. especially in the fall and spring. this temperature change can cause the windshield to fog up rather quickly especially when it's damp and there are warm bodies in the car. this can occur when your driving down the road at any time. i work for napa auto parts and travel in 3 states. i'm a former vehicle technician and know a lot of repair shops. i was blown away at how many of theses repair shop knew exactly what the problem was and said that this is very common. they also stated that it is very time consuming and very costly to repair. most dealership stock the parts to repair this. this alone should throw up a red flag! the blend doors were designed very cheaply and we the consumer have to pay for it. anyone can see the hazard here the question is, will somebody do something before there is a death? ( there may have already been some, but nobody will ever know if the person is dead!). now you know why this should be a recall. i can tell you that not many people are aware of this website. you would have a lot more complaints on this issue if they did. *tr

Visibility heating and cooling. passenger side air wont heat. drivers side works fine on dual climate control overland. passenger side will not. when i phone my local dealer here in yankton sd, the service rep actually completed my sentence when i was describing the problem. he indicates this is a repeating ongoing problem with the grand cherokee. he even described the impaired vision as a result of the very well known malfunction. he told my wife and i that unless there is a severe chance of personal injury jeep will not step up to the plate and take responsibility for this poor design flaw. also he indicated it may cost as much as $1500 to fix. he suggested i stuff plastic bags into the heat duct to stop the flow of cold air until i get it repaired. he commented that poor visibility will continue if not worsen by doing so. plain and simple, jeep needs to take accountability for their design flaw. the know the problem is theirs but continue to take advantage of their customers for their own doing. if i wanted this kind of treatment, i would of purchased a gm. the tacoma, great performer and service people who don't take you for an idiot.

*tr

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited. late winter, when i needed it the most, my heat began not working only on the driver's side of the vehicle. the passenger side had plenty of heat though. i took it to the dealer and after a $1100 repair bill to repair the blend doors inside the ac system (mostly labor), it was repaired. today, again, i have no heat and now no ac too. a diagnosis now says that i have a code for travel too large-this is the code for the blend doors again. after an internet search, i see that there are many, many others like me who are having the same issue. this is a safety concern as in the winter, there is no way to clear the windshield with the cold air. dailmer chrysler needs to do the right thing here and stop profiting from their own defects. this should be a recall to repair all affected vehicles. *tr

I have a 2002 grand cherokee overland. i realized my heater vents on the passenger side weren't working after the vehicle was beyond the 36,000 mile warranty. i believe the failure was long before 36,000 miles but it was too late for the problem to be covered by the warranty. i took it to a dealer who told me the vent-air door had failed. the cost to repair was quoted at being around $1300. i thought it strange that a failure of this type would occur especially in a vehicle with low mileage. i haven't got the vehicle repaired yet but it is certainly an aggravation in the winter. i talked to two people where i work who own grand cherokees and both their jeeps have the same problem. seems like an unusual coincidence. after checking on the internet it appears a lot of jeep owners are having the same heater-vent door problems. sounds like a design problem to me that jeep owners are paying the price for. *tr

On january 22, 2007, i heard a cracking noise under the dash as i started my jeep in the morning. later that morning it became apparent that it was not possible to get any heat in the cabin, nor was it possible to defrost the windshield. after trying various settings, all that can be achieved is to blow cold (ambient) air (currently 4f) out of the various vents/defroster. this does very, very little to remove frost from the windshield. additionally, the heater core has begun failing. this releases additional moisture into the cabin, causing even worse fogging (frosting this time of year). this combination of failures renders the defroster totally ineffective, and requires the dangerous act of wiping or scraping the inside of the window about every 5 minutes under normal winter conditions. i am informed that this condition is caused by the breakage of mix doors in the hvac system, a known defective weak part that is currently being replaced (at customer expense) on virtually all 1999-2004 grand cherokees with automatic climate controls. breakage of these parts can constitute a serious hazard, and should be a required recall by dc. i have had to undertake this repair myself - a huge task, as i do not have the $1800 to have the dealer repair it. *jb

Problem started right after i purchased my 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited in oct 2006. passenger side heat vents started blowing really cold air. took it to a mechanic..he said the blend doors were bad. it was not covered under warranty. well i got the dealership i bought the jeep from to pay for it which was around $900. well then in jan 2008 my heat started turning on and off by itself. finally yesterday 1/30/08 my heat just stopped working. i called my warranty provider..of course this is not covered. i called jeep dealership said it will cost $1200 to fix the everything. it is -24 degrees outside and my window keeps fogging up then freezing..a total safety issue. i do not have this type of money to fix it. i have called chrysler and i did not get anywhere with them. same voice recorded message. i have looked over and over to see if this problem with the heat was common and it is really common for 2002 jgc limited. someone needs to do something. this is totally uncalled for. *tr

My jeep 2000 grand cherokee suddenly will produce no heat, this is a safety concern since the windows will not defog and can create serious visibility problems. the heating system will only blow cold air, which can suddenly create condensation on the window and entirely obscure visibility. there were no events leading up to the failure, it just stopped working. upon a short bit of research, it seems to be a very common problem with jeep grand cherokee's from 2000-2004 and jeep will not acknowledge it as a manufacturing defect even though thousands upon thousands are having this same safety problem happen to them. *tr

The dual-zone climate control on the jeep grand cherokee overland stopped working. the 2 vents in the center of the dashboard respond to the climate control settings, and blow the appropriate temperature air. the remaining 3 vents in the dash, and 2 additional floor vents only blow air that is the temperature of the outside air. , in the summer time, 2 vents blow cold air, and the remaining 5 blow hot air. and in the winter, the opposite happens; 2 vents blow warm air, and the remaining 5 blow cold air. this was my second grand cherokee that has had this problem, and my brother's grand cherokee has also had this same exact problem. upon speaking with dealers, it seems like hundreds of trucks need to have this identical issue fixed. it was related to the blend doors, which ere part of the dual zone system. *ak

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited with 51,400 miles on it. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield, (2) fogging of front passenger windows, (3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently, (1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dash ventilation system. to correct this problem, a blend air door is necessary at a high cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to service department at jeep and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limited's with duel zone ventilation systems. *jb

My jeep seems to be in need of a heater core replacement which is expensive to fix from what i understand. i feel that this is a major safety issue because everytime we get in the car to drive, the windshield is completely fogged up, the defroster doesn't work, heater doesn't work, but the a/c does. i constantly have to fill up the antifreeze, and i cant help but wonder if the fumes being emitted from the windshield are hazardous to me and my family? it is so hard to see through the window at any time of the day because even when you wipe the fog off, it comes right back. i fear getting into an accident with my wife and kids in the car. we contacted worthington dodge of carlsbad, who referred us to daimler chrysler since we have the extended warranty through them. they told us that it is not a common problem, nor is it a safety issue, and they basically told us :oh well, we wont cover it, and get it fixed yourself. *nm

I would like someone to check into the type of product that chrysler (jeep) to be specific is using on their windows. i have a 2002/and 2003 jeep grand cherokee laredo at this time only one window is operable that being the passenger side, the other three windows have to be taped up, to stay up, the windows can not be fully secured which causes rain to enter the vehicle, and also dampness when sitting out overnight. this also occurs when driving at night, when i explained this problem to chrysler i was told this was not a safety issue i beg to differ trying to not have it raining on you when driving or coming in the other windows is a safety issue they explained that the vehicles were out of warranty i did not know there was a warranty on safety. the web site shows there are thousands of this particular model with the same problem a high power needs to step up and investigate the inferior products being used by this company chrysler wants to fall on deaf ears rather than back its product that is one reason that imports are a much more popular vehicle, though they also have some problems, but it seems that the foreign auto makers are willing to back their product they have pride in their selves unlike american mfgs. *tr

In may 2009 my passenger front window regulator went out. my local jeep dealership said that jeep makes cheap window regulator parts and this is a common problem with jeeps. yet they wanted to charge me $497.00 to fix problem. i went ahead and fixed it, because i couldn't drive around with a window rolled down everywhere i went. now 5 months later the passenger rear window has also broken, due to the same problem and the sunroof will also not close properly. i feel that if jeep admits to using cheap parts for their windows, then they should also fix them for free when they break so often. i cannot afford close to $500 per window every 6 months when they keep breaking. *tr

I own a 2002 jeep cherokee 4x4 quad drive ,i recently broke down had to be towed. the problem was cooling fan. due to the relay switch. this is just one of many electrical problems i have with this jeep the door lock motors failed the windows failed on both driver and passenger side doors the bk hatch failed. the cost for the relay pkg was 347.59 i have yet to replace passengerside window operator and driverside door locks as they are both well over 300.00 each. this seems to be a defect as i have heard the same complaints from people that own 2002 jeep cherokees. *tr

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo. in the spring of 2007, my driver's side window regulator broke (the window fell, would not roll up or down). i had it replaced. in october 2007, the same thing happened to my passenger side window. in may 2008, the same to my right rear passenger window, and in sept 2008, the same to my left rear passenger window. all windows have failed within one year of each other. the final straw was today when the rear drivers side window regulator failed again. i do not have the money to fix these, and believe that chrysler should issue a recall to repair the windows. i have received an estimate of $347 per window to repair the three windows. i can't afford this and expect jeep to correct the problems. *tr

I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. i have had to have 3 window regulators replaced. i only have one left, who knows when that will go, perhaps next year, because it seems one breaks per year. i have had each of these replaced at a chrysler dealer. chrysler is quite aware that this is a problem with it's vehicles, but is unwilling to do anything about it, because it is not a safety issue. this part with labor is $460 each time it needs to be replaced. chrysler is willing to keep draining the pockets of its consumers with no care to its loyal customers. there are 5 pages of complaints on automotive.com with the same issues. i want to file an official complaint. chrysler is unwilling to do anything to correct the problem, because the vehicle is no longer under warranty. i would like my money back. i think this car is a lemon!!!! i have put more money into this vehicle over the last two years then i have paid for the car. i hope you can help me retrieve some of my financial losses. *tr

While vehicle was parked, driver side window fell, and power window control failed to raise the window. it is now stuck in the half-open position, pending repair. my research shows that this is a common recurring problem among jeep owners, and that the repair is approx. $400 for each incident. given the hundreds of owner reports i have since discovered for this exact problem, chrysler should issue a recall to both improve the quality of the part(s) and remedy the problem. *tr

We have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee and since the first month that we purchased it nwe we have had problems with the window regulators breaking. we have now had four to break in the five years that we have had the vehicle. the first one that broke was repaired under warranty, but the other three have taken place since the beginning of august of this year. the first window regulator that we had to have repaired by the dealership cost $422. we have not had the other two windows fixed yet, because we are hoping that daimler chrysler will help us out with this. i have contacted the customer service center and they will not cover the malfunction due to the warranty expiring. i feel this is an eventual safety issue. when the cable snaps it sounds like a shot gun firing, which could cause the driver to react to the noise. more than anything, i find it to be a manufacturing defect that consumer nation wide are having to pay for. i have read hundreds of similar problems of jeep grand cherokee owners on car forum websites on the internet. *tr

I have owned my 2002 jeep grand cherokee for 2 years now. overall i have loved the car but two weeks ago on the way home the driver's window just dropped into the door. thinking that was odd and a rarity we continued home. later that evening the left passenger window did the exact same thing. i decided that this wasn't a rarity but some sort of defect and turned to the internet to find out what i should do about the problem. to my dismay i find that there are lots of people that have run into the exact same problem and that it is because of a piss poor design that jeep doesn't want to fix. even more to my dismay i find that not only does jeep not want to fix the issue that want to charge $450 per window to fix it. *jb

Tl*- the contact received a safety recall notice about the fan in her 2002 jeep grand cherokee in november and called the dealer and they have not yet completed the repairs. the vehicle has been placed on a waiting list. also, there was a brake failure while driving over 40 mph. the steering wheel would vibrate so much that it felt as if it were about to come off. this incident happened over 300 times. the brakes were faulty since she bought the vehicle, but the dealer always told her that nothing was wrong, even though there was a safety bulletin in place. after the warranty expired the failure was diagnosed and the cost of the repair was $1500. the contact was charged for several front end alignments that never seem to alleviate the failure. also, there was recurring problem with the motor of the rear windows. the contact had one motor replaced at a cost of $300 and will need to replace the second motor. *ak

I see my first complaint about my 02 jeep grand cherokee overland. my second complaint didn't make it on the list. since then i've have 2 more window regulators go out. wrote letters to jeep and anyone i can think of. no responces!!! this is a very serious safety issue. we were out to dinner and the window right next to the infant car seat had fallen into the door and a very cold night it was. on our way home, the other window had fallen into the door. now there is no way to protect the baby in the back in the baby seat strapped in with two open windows blowing cold air at him. what if his car seat would have been stolen when we were in the restaurant??? how would have we got him home safely. what if it had been raining or snowing on him all the way home?? what if i was riding alone and had been car jacked?? what if was really inclement weather affecting the inside of my vehicle all that night and not knowing that the windows had fallen into the doors??? i really don't feel safe taking the baby in the affected vehicle with me any more. why did i pay so much money for the valued jeep i purchased when so much is going wrong with it. i only have 46000 miles on it now. chrysler really needs to stand up to it's faults with their vehicles and help pay for their customers that trust in them!!!!!!!!!! *nm

I bought my 2002 jeep grand cherokee new. since that time i have had to replace the regulator in the window mechanism three times. the front driver's side window went out while the vehicle was still under warranty. the front passenger side window went out after three years and the rear driver's side window went out six months later. in all cases when this happened the window falls down into the door and will not stay in the up position. the last time it happened was during a freezing rain storm with my 16-month old in the back seat. not being able to keep a window closed is a hazard in many ways. things can blow into the vehicle, things can blow out of the vehicle into the roadway, etc. when i mentioned to the dealer that replaced the most recent regulator that three of the same component going out was a little more than a coincidence, he agreed and said their shop had replaced quite a few of those lately. i have literally rolled down the back window less than 20 times ever since having the vehicle so i know it is not wear and tear. this is obviously a component defect. *nm

2002 jeep grand cherokee. steering wheel began making strange sounds. steering gear and associated parts were replaced. shortly after, strange sounds returned, the steering began to become completely unassisted at low speeds for a brief second. the problem causes quite a scare and causes temporary loss of control. this is associated with low speed idle. damage is imminent without repair. this problem is well documented among jeep chat rooms. second well documented problem among jeep owners. faulty power window units that fail without warning and cause window to be stuck up or down. this causes driver to be forced to drive with open non responding windows in a variety of weather conditions, obvious safety and health hazard. third chronic hazard well known to jeep owners as well as jeep. the blend doors on a/c consistently fail right after warranty period. this causes a failure of the defroster and obvious danger, as well as drivers are forced to drive with constant unheated airflow until costly repair. jeep is well aware of these problems but refuses to acknowledge a consistent problem and offer correction for all affected vehicles. *nm

After reading almost all complaints with other 2002 jeep grand cherokees, i have to put in my two cents worth. i can relate to almost every complaint that there is. i just had both my front left and right window regulators replaced a month and a half apart, one just today at $327.00 with my employee discount. (i work for a car dealership) last month, i have had almost $500.00 worth of repairs for my power steering pump problems. i have had my brake rotors turned and resurfaced and am in need of doing it again. then on the other hand, i have experienced problems with my dual control panel not working correctly which i have not have repaired yet because i don't have the money for that one and didn't know at the time that it was a problem. then when my jeep was under warranty i have had the air conditioner compressor replaced, new battery(for hard or no starting), amongst other repairs that i can't think of at the moment. i have also been experiencing hard starts with my truck and also the transmission not engaging or jumping (accelerating) while switching gears that the jeep dealer has not been able to recognize as a problem. i feel that those new chrysler commercials are not up to par as american and german engineering. those germans know how to build vehicles in the first place and help repair them as the problem seem necessary. *nm

I was driving on sr 70 when i felt my jeep slugging then i looked at the gauge and noticed that it was all the way to the boiling point. then i pulled over to the side of the road because i wasn't sure what had happened. called my dad he came and looked at my jeep and found that the fan had busted we had been able to put enough water in it to get it to wal-mart where we came to the conclusion that it had a hole in the radiator. there was pieces everywhere from the shroud. the next day had it towed to firkins in bradenton it was out of warranty so i ended up paying $1131.45 for this to be fixed. now ever since this has been fixed my check engine light comes on for awhile then goes off. this happened with the fan on 8/17/04 now both power windows in the back are not working just the other day my son got out of the jeep shut the door and down came the window neither of the back windows work had it checked out and it will cost me 300.00 per window for the bearings what is going to happen next the front ones. i thought when i bought this brand i was getting a good value but turns out all i have had is a nightmare. *nm
