I have no heat in this vehicle. i replace a part and detached the glove compartment permanently so that i can turn a knob to get heat, at least, on the driver side. there is zero heat on the passenger side, but i engage the c button and the passenger side gets recirculated air on that side, (not warm, but at least not freezing cold). sometimes turning the knob engages the heat, sometimes not. i have discovered that this is a defect in manufacturing for 2003 jeep grand cherokee limited vehicles, along with prior years. however, to my knowledge, there has been no recall. i purchased this vehicle pre-owned, with 80k miles on it. my question is if this is a defect in manufacturing, why should i have to pay hundreds of dollars to repair it. it seems that the dealership should absorb the cost of this repair and not the consumer. additionally, why hasn't this problem been listed as a recall? *tr

Jeep grand cherokee 2003 defect in blend door design, broken, no heat, no defrost, is a safety issue, unable to drive vehicle safely in cold weather because no heat to defrost windshield.

Total loss of heat on the passenger side. now the drivers side has no heat either. i live in canada and we need the heat to work or the vehicle is totally useless if you can't see out the windshield! jeep dealers are aware of the problem, but won't fix it by recall. they expect you to pay anywhere from 800-1500 for them to fix it and a loss of your jeep for at least 3 days. this is nuts!

The heater in my 2003 jeep grand cherokee overland has failed due to a known defect in the temperature blender door that prevents heat from getting redirected onto the windshield to defrost the glass. chrysler has to my knowledge not issued a voluntary recall to fix this problem. this is a serious safety issue here in montana where we need to be able to see in winter weather. i was nearly in an accident this morning with my 6-year old son in the car due to the windshield freezing up and my not being able clear the glass. please, please, please issue a recall notice to force chrysler to fix this known problem. i am sure there are many other jeep owners who have filed similar complaints. this is a safety issue just as important as the seat-heater recall for the same model. thank you. bill haynes *tr

April of 2006 i purchased my 2003 jeep grand cherokee overland. about 2weeks after i purchased the vehicle, i noticed that the heater was not working properly. i took the vehicle back to the dealer where they informed me that the blend doors where broken or not working properly and it would cost approximately $1000 to fix and would not be covered under the extended warranty i purchased. i had to go through the various levels of management until they finally agreed to repair the vehicle. just over 1 year later in august of 2007, i noticed that the ability to direct air to specific vents, stopped working, now the air just blows into the dash. i have gone back to the dealer, where they told me that the problem is the recirculate door, which was suppose to be changed when the blend doors where replaced, according to their technical service bulletin, which was not done when the blend doors where replaced. the cost to do the repair would be approximately $1000 because they have to go through the same process as when the blend doors where replaced, except this time they will replace the recirculate doors. i really didn't realize the safety issue these components posed, until i drove in a snow climate. it was impossible to defrost the windshield. i literally had to reach forward wipe the windshield every couple of minutes while driving in order to see. it was extremely unsafe. these failed components are not considered luxury features, such as ac, it's considered a safety feature. there is an unusually high level of complaints of people experiencing the very same problem with their jeep grand cherokees, and chrysler has yet to address the problem. defrosters are a safety feature. in cold climates you cannot operate the vehicle safely without them. when is the manufacturer held responsible for faulty parts that pose a safety risk? does something have to happen? does someone have to get injured, possibly worse? the dealerships are capitalizing the consumers are hurting. *tr

While driving my 2003 jeep grand cherokee, in cold conditions, i found that the ac/heater output was insufficient to keep the windshield defrosted and defogged, resulting in extremely unsafe driving conditions. the fan works, but no air comes out. i researched the problem and found that it is due to a blend-door defect, common to that model/year jeep. the vehicle has approx. 72,000 miles on it. i can't safely drive the vehicle in cold conditions until this is fixed. this repair is estimated to be between $900 -$1200. if this is such a widespread problem with this vehicle, i find it difficult to understand why there isn't a recall by deimler-chrysler to repair this. how many deaths will it take before this gets the true attention it deserves? *tr

The air control system in the 2003 jeep grand cherokee is faulty and fails. they already have a fix for this known faulty system but the repair does not fix the solution, it only delays it till it breaks again. some aftermarket companies are making lots of money off of people who are trying to fix the problem permanently. the company should make the permanent repair a recall as the system can fail at an inopportune time and can lead to accidents when the windshield can fog up and the defroster will not work. the system can also fail such that the parts can fall into the fan motor and cause it to overheat possibly causing a fire. these vehicles are frequently used by families because of their size and steps should be taken to fix this problem once and for all. *tr

2002 jeep grand cherokee limited v-8 4x4 with climate control. the hvac fan quit functioning. when i took the vehicle into the dealer i purchased it from, i was told, without them doing any teardown, that it was a common occurrence for the hvac wire harness and connector behind the dash to overheat and melt down. with the vehicle being out of warranty, the estimated repair cost in 2005 at over $1200 in labor plus the wiring harness and a set of 3 air doors, i could not then nor now afford repairs and have done without heat or cooling ever since. to eliminate the possibility of a fire from the damaged wiring, i removed the fuse, which i recall to be 40 amps. i strongly feel that possibility of a fire from the overheated wiring is just cause for a recall to replace the wiring harness and related parts damaged by the apparent short circuit caused by the overheating. i also suspect that the cruise control was damaged also as it hasn't functioned properly since. *tr

The heating/cooling system on my 2003 grand cherokee is an insult to the other qualities of this vehicle! the internal doors that direct air through the system is extremely cheaply made. mostly plastic-a very poor grade! the dealer says it will cost close to a $1000 to repair and he wouldn't guarantee it would not happen again. i think chrysler should be responsible for something this poorly made. it is no wonder they are in trouble and the government is giving them billions of dollars to make more inferior jeeps! i have not had the repairs made,i just don't have the money. so my wife has to ride to work in a luxury vehicle with no heater! there is no doubt this should be a recall!!!!! *tr updated 10/23/09 *cn

Good day, i'm filing a complaint with my 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the heat has stop working. first it was the passenger side that stopped working and now simply no heat comes out at all. after extensive web researching, i have found a shocking number of fellow jeep owners have the same problem, stemming back to 1990 models. apparently the blend actuators are defective and start to go out one side at a time, finishing with the main actuator failing causing no heat what so ever!! repair facilities all state the same thing: entire dash must be removed to replace two-three different actuators costing an owner in excess of close to $1000.00. this is not acceptable and extravagant!! from the number of complaints i see on a simple web search, i'm not the only one who feels this way! *tr

I recently purchased a 2003 jeep grand cherokee overland over the summer of 2008. i live in mn and it is rather cold here. around october the heat in my jeep when out, i took it into the shop and they told me it was the blend door that was causing the problems and its going to be $800 to fix it because removal of the dash is required and there is a lot of labor for a part that only costs $50. i have been doing my research and it seems this is a very common problem for jeep owners and it is actually quite common when you reach around 60,000-80,000 miles my car had 74,000. i go to college and don't have that kind of money to fix it right now and i live in a very cold state, im very upset with jeep right now if problems like this are happening to people something should be done about it. *tr

Loss of any and all heat. started with the failure of the blend door actuator, resulting in the loss of heat on the passenger side. blow cold air when setting is set at a high temperature. then the recirculator door that fell off the small hinge and dropped on top of the blower disrupting the flow of any air though the heating system. then the blower itself failed resulting in no air, hot or cold, being produced. currently no heat or defrost is being produced resulting in limited visibility while driving and no heat when outside temperature today is at 1 degree above zero and over a foot of snow. *tr

I own a 2003 jeep grand cherokee limited with 52,000 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a blend air door is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limited with duel zone ventilation systems. *jb

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower my heater is blowing cold air on driver's side/passenger takes a long time to blow heat. ac (air conditioning is also failing) receiving these codes: 52...........................ai (recirc) door travel too large 54...........................left temperature door travel too large the problem with the jeep grand cherokee limited is a design problem. the system uses a stepper motor that detects the extents of movement by hitting a resistance point at the open and close point. the system is designed with a small plastic pin on the door connection pin that breaks over time. when the pin breaks, the resistance point occurs when the door hits the extents of the open and close position. the door is not designed to handle this force and eventually the door itself actually breaks. please note we are currently in -3 celsius weather in mississauga, ontario, canada. i will be taking my 2003 jeep grand cherokee in for warranty service. if this is not covered under warranty i am looking at a bill to fix between $300-$1500 canadian. after going to dealership with warranty claim will call 1-800# and provide details from dealership visit. this can be considered a safety defect since could affect defrosting of windshield while driving. also very uncomfortable to drive with no heat (in winter) and no ac (in summer) please respond to my complaint asap. thank you i have read several posts on the internet that jeep from 1998-2004 all have the same problem. update: i have received service for jeep on january 21, 2008 i have put in a complaint on jan. 21/08 reference # 17140103 issue was blend door fault. the blender door on left side was melted. parts replaced: 05012743 housing 24-028-025 05134353 housing 24-028-025 total parts and labor $473.27 please followup with chrysler why this is a not a recall. jeep is not drivable in this condition. *tr

Almost immediately after the warranty ran out, the passenger side of the automatic zone control stopped putting out heat, only cold. then about 5000 miles later the entire vehicle stopped putting out heat altogether. this is a very dangerous safety issue due to the fact that there is no way to keep the windshield clear of ice and fog. this makes the vehicle unusable during half of the year. this is a well known, common problem that should have a recall placed for the repair. there has not been any action taken yet to repair this problem because it is so expensive to have repaired.  I am experiencing the same door blend malfunction that thousands of others are experiencing. one day the substandard vent door for the passenger side climate control broke, and since then only cold air blows from those vents as well as the windshield defroster. the defroster worries me the most as without a clear windshield my vision is thus impaired and could potentially lead to a deadly accident. i have spoke to a jeep dealership who informed me that it is a very common problem and it would cost me upwards of $1,200.00 to fix. after checking the internet i see thousands of other jeep owners with the exact same problem, yet no factory recall. jeep needs to fix this problem for its customers before dangerous or deadly accidents occur! *tr

2003 jeep grand cherokee limited - no heat on driver's side - passenger side heat is still working. i checked the codes for this problem and it seems to be related to the blend doors located in the heating/cooling vehicle ductwork. i also did a great deal of checking via the internet to see if there were other jeep owners having this same problem. to my surprise, i found that there were a great many other jeep owners all complaining about the exact same problem. it also appears that this is a very costly repair (i saw where people had paid as much as $1800.00 to get their heaters working correctly). this is not just a comfort problem (drivers and passengers being too hot or too cold), since it also effects the windshields defogger/defroster ability, which of course, can lead to an actual dangerous driving condition. with so many jeep owners experiencing this exact same problem, it's clear that this is a major manufacturer defect and should lead to a recall to repair the problem at no charge to the owner. *tr

I own a 2003 jeep grand cherokee limited with 105k miles. i am the second owner. we purchased the jeep second hand from sheehy ford mercury in ashland virginia on january 15th 2007. the part failure appears to be a very common problem on the jeep models with dual climate control based on the hundreds of online forums describing similar problems with the hvac recirc doors and the blend doors. my problem was the recirc door had broken loose and had fallen down covering the vent system entirely, in effect, we had no heat, no a/c and most importantly, no defrost. virginia state law requires that the vehicle must have defrost to pass the state safety inspection. i did the repair myself after reading how daimler/chrysler has completely ignored the design fault. now, anyone who has these model jeep's will have to pay $1200.00 and up for a repair that breaks again due to the same problem using the same faulty parts. the plastic door stops break off first, then due to the poor design, the door finally breaks off and falls down blocking all airflow from the heating and air system. a recall needs to be issued to fix the problem. i ordered from ebay, two kits from someone in texas who offers replacement stainless steel hardware that replaces the recirc doors and blend doors. the kits cost me $232.00 dollars and about 16 hrs labor along with bloody knuckles. i decided to not waste time going to a dealer and getting denied repairs due to no recall. the kits i used were called heatertreater. i repaired both recirc and blend doors even though the blend doors were not a problem yet. please, please someone force daimlerchrysler to face reality and fix this safety problem. *tr

Passenger side of car blows cold air from all vents, including the defroster vent. this is due to a broken blend door on the passenger side of the vehicle. this is most certainly a safety hazard due to the fact that i can only see out of half of my windshield when it is cold outside. thousands are having this same design flaw problem while chrysler sits by and does nothing. the cost to fix this common problem is ~$1000. if chrysler is aware that this is a design flaw, yet continues to ignore the safety issues associated with it, then we have a major lack of corporate responsibility. *tr

It appears as though 1999 to 2004 jeep grand cherokees have an issue with blend door failure in the hvac system. the failure will prevent heat from reaching the windshield. in freezing conditions the windshield will unexpectedly ice up and result in poor visibility. after speaking with dealership and independent repair technicians as well as internet research, it appears the failure rate is very high. the manufacturer has revised the faulty parts used in this system (tsb#2400104) but are doing nothing to alert owners of the potential, unexpected failure. *jb

My 2003 jeep grand cherokee has had the window just begin to fall into the door on three out of the four windows now and it is usually at the most dangerous moment possible while i'm on the highway or on the road in general. i turn to see no window or the window mysteriously down and i am unable to roll it up. this presents many different hazards not only to the vehicle itself but, also to the occupants whether it is a child or my canine companion they both like to lean on the window and look out even though a child will have a seatbelt on if the window falls down and the child falls out towards the opposing traffic still hanging by a seat belt this is not a situation i am willing to risk. and i will lose my puppy if he is sitting there no doubt about it he will fall right out and it isn't easy to leave him at home every time i go somewhere because i'm afraid of the window failing again it's completely unpredictable. also with the weather it is not very practical to pull off of the highway which is an extremely dangerous area already but to try and somehow prop the window up isn't a safe situation any way you look at it. as cars whisk by at upwards of 70 miles an hour i try and fix something that can be fixed by changing one part on the window regulator. there is already an after market block that can replace the faulty brittle plastic piece. i would appreciate some consideration with this issue. //s// jake trione *tr

July 2006 i was driving my 2003 jeep when i heard a pop. i was unsure where the sound came from so i looked around the vehicle to see if a rock had hit the window. i then proceeded to roll down each window to see if there was a problem there. i found that the passenger side window was broken and the window slid down into the door. when i called the dealership the person who answered the phone knew immediately what the problem was without even seeing the vehicle because this is apparently a common problem. when the vehicle was taken in for repairs i asked to speak to the manager because i believed it was unfair that i had to pay well over $300 for something that seems to be a defect. he then explained that the genius engineers decided to replace what used to be a steel rod with a piece of plastic! i requested the address to send a formal complaint to chrysler regarding this matter and i followed up with a letter via e-mail. in return, i received a form letter from chrysler that had not been completed. i feel cheated by a company that has taken my money and ran. i will never buy another jeep or chrysler vehicle because of the treatment i received. they didn't even care enough to proofread the form letter they sent... i'm guessing they probably didn't even read my letter.*jb

Dt*: the contact stated although there were no ongoing problems with the seat warmers, there was a nhtsa recall, #06v197000 on the vehicle regarding the seats. the parts needed to repair the vehicle were not available at the local dealership. the manufacturer was not alerted. additionally, while attempting to open the front passenger power side window, there was a popping noise. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer, who determined the power window control needed to be replaced.

I own a 2003 jeep grand cherokee. while driving on 12/05/2006 i experienced a system failure when my passenger window fell for no reason. i took it to the dealer and they reported that the power window regulator which failed. i then checked your site and noticed numerous complaints for the same problem. this is a costly repair and i just wondered how many times someone had to suffer a financial loss on a part that is so common and of which i never had a problem with on other vehicles owned that had much more activity than this window. please let me know because as a consumer i would hope that manufacturers are held to some standards. *jb

A/c and heating blower motor and power window motor failure. these problems have occurred in my 2003 jeep grand cherokee limited. after researching i have found well over 180 people who own grand cherokees (various models) between the years 2000-2004 with these exact same problems. chrysler/ jeep customer service will not respond to my comments on this issue. *nm

At 35,000 miles the passenger-side window regulator made a popping noise, then the window slowly sank into the window-well and would not move. i had to have the regulator replaced at a cost to me of $447.20. *jb

The passenger door window went part way down, it then failed to move . you could hear the motor working but the window remained in the same position. the failure caused rain and debris to enter the window. the entire regulator had to be replaced which included the motor because a plastic cam broke. the part cost over $200 to the public and failed with less than 31000 miles on the car but was out of warranty by exceeding the three year limit. same unit on both sides of car could cause problem of objects flying in face of driver. *jb

I would like to register a complaint against chrysler. i own a 2003 jeep grand cherokee and i had to have the motor replaced for the driver side rear window. what is bothersome to me is that i never put this window down. no one sits in the back seat nor do i have children putting the window up and down. i also had to replace both the driver and passenger side motors as well. it's quite clear that there is a defect in this part. i would appreciate it if we start holding companies accountable for their products. *nm

In august 2005, passenger side power window regulator failed (lower pulley broke allowing cable to become entangled around motor drum). window fell within door housing and i had to drive vehicle with no side window in a downpour to the dealer. vehicle had approx. 42k miles. dealer refused to repair under warranty in that vehicle has > 36k miles. in may 2006, drivers side power window regulator failed, with the same symptoms. both repairs were funded out of my pocket. *nm
