First started in nov 2009 driver side door controls won't work, dome lights go on with headlights, repaired broken wire. june 2010, drivers door is inoperable window stuck down, cannot lock doors, repaired wiring harness in door. dec. 2011 windows and door locks were inoperable. - made wiring repair., jan 2013 door locks and windows inoperable, dome light stays on while driving or else you loose control panel lights.-repaired door harness in rr and rf doors-was told this is last time they can repair harnesses and next time this happens it will cost $2,000 to replace all wiring. this seems ridiculous and the dealership mentioned they have had this problem before with jeeps. i do not see how this should keep malfunctioning if no damage or abuse has happened to the vehicle. i believe jeep should stand behind their vehicle and repair the wiring harness at no charge until they come up with a better system of wiring harnesses through the doors. *tr

2004 jeep grand cherokee ran the day before, after it rained that night the next morning the car will not start, remote started to work no sound, lights would go off & on, after locating the harness boot between the drivers door negative wiring fatigues and breaks, heard clicking sounds when boot was touched. now nothing works. car has been repaired for other major issues, pcm, tps, senoids, barrons etc. this is a defect & chrysler needs to face up to correcting their faulty wiring, and not leave it up to the consumer to fix on there own, were are not mechanics, from reading all the complaints on the web, it makes me wonder why jeep is still in business, great bodies but no peep inside, all the wiring in the drivers side door harness is ridiculous & is an accident waiting to happen for the consumer. these wires should never been bunched together which is allowing friction when opening & closing the door causing burn outs & shorts with the wiring sham on you chrysler

Wiring harness located between front door and frame inside rubber tubing is made of inferior materials and cracks with time exposing wiring causing a safety issue. specifically, the black neutral wire and orange wires have been cracking on dozens, if not thousands, of jeep grand cherokees (as seen here: http://autoforum.classifieds1000.com/jeep-grand_cherokee/04_jeep_grand_cherokee_electrical_problem). when this occurs, the wiring becomes exposed and/or breaks. in my case when this occurred, the drivers side door controls ceased to operate causing the windows and door locks to be unresponsive. in addition this causes the interior lights to turn on when the headlamps are on causing difficulty driving in night time conditions. finally, this fault may be the cause of the drivers side brake light to fail when headlamps are on. this issue can be temporarily corrected by splicing the existing wiring harness. however, a more permanent solution would be to replace the entire wiring harness as other wires could deteriorate.

No power to windows, locks and mirrors on doors. there is a wire on the inside of the drivers door that splits in half for no reason preventing anything on the doors to work. i cannot open any windows, un/lock any doors, or adjust my mirrors. this has not been recalled but is a very common problem with this vehicle. i feel this is a safety hazard.

2004 grand cherokee. consumer states pulse module problem. *tgw the consumer stated the air conditioning unit ceased to function. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the problem was diagnosed as a bad plug connector. they repaired the connector by cleaning and re-installing the pins at a cost of $170.00. shortly thereafter, the unit once again ceased to function. the consumer stated he had to wiggle the plug in order for it to work and it only worked intermittently. the consumer was informed a repair kit was available with replacement parts. the dealer informed the consumer they would ship the parts to his hometown. it took approximately 2 1/2 months for the parts to arrive only after numerous phone calls. upon inspecting the malfunctioning parts, the consumer found that they were badly burned and the wires were melted. *jb

The windows and interior lights stopped working. when we pulled into the garage we noticed sparks near the door hinge. two factory wires were broken and making contact, which was causing the arcing. a jeep mechanic told me that nothing was being done about this defect, and that he has seen at least 2 a month with this defect. if any fumes from the fuel were present you would have a fire.

Lights went haywire in the car as well as the the locks on the windows and doors i.e., all of the locks do not work on with the remote, the side mirrors don't move, and the windows do not move up or down. after the headlights are on, the interior lights dim to where they cannot be seen. from an internet search, this is a common problem that cost $275 to repair. i took my car in today for service and was told $112 to look at the car that could be used towards the cost of the repair. according to the internet search the problem will be from a damaged wire in the door that will need to be repaired/replaced.

2004 jeep cherokee, twice now the fuse to the fuel injector has blown within a month rendering the car undrivable. going down the road the car cuts off, you cannot steer it, and the brakes seem not to work well at all, you practically have to stand on them. this nearly got me hit today going through a red light. the first time it happened, i was going down a hill and barely got the car stopped before hitting a tree. i had it towed to a mechanic, he changed the fuse and thought that it was ok, until today. two years ago, the wiring to the windows and door locks quit working and had to pay to have that replaced, there is definitely something not right with these vehicles. years ago, i had an acceleration problem, got stuck, finally got control of it, and the check engine light stayed on, took it to the dealership, they said they couldn't find anything wrong, never could tell me why the check engine light had come on after this occurring.

Car keeps cutting off while driving. has done it several times on highway, rural roads and main roads. it has caused me to almost have several wrecks. when the car cuts off, i lose all power. i have been stranded several times with my autistic son. i have had to walk back home or get someone to come get me if it was further away. i have had to use someone car because i am afraid it will do it and i will wreck. after a while it will start again, but does the same thing over and over again. it started off about 1 month ago when i would just crank the car and the first time it would not crank but the 2nd time it would. in the last 2 weeks i have been stranded or be driving and have to put it in neutral to see if it will crank. it does and then i put in drive. it cuts off again. i have to pull over to the side of the road no matter where you are and sometimes if you are going on the highway at the speed and your car cuts off, you lose power and could easy wreck. if i was to pull out and it cut off, i could be hit and killed or a family member in the car with me. i was stranded across the street about 2 weeks ago and i was across the street from a jeep dealership. a gentleman came over and brought some equipment when i told him what had happened and he told me that the crank shaft sensor went out. there is a recall on that part but not on mine. i have talked to the daimler chrysler on december 29, 2009 and told them of the incident and was given a case number and was told someone would call me back. a gentleman did call back and left me a message that they had made a decision. i was not at the phone at the time he left the message. he left his name and number and i have called back. he was suppose to call me back the following day and he did not. *tr

Consumer concerned about design problem with potential wire harness failure and possible fire, 2004 jeep grand cherokee. *bf the problems involved misleading /incorrect marking on the 12 volt accessory power outlets. the outlets were marked as being able to handle 20 amps. after plugging in a radio which normally drew 7 amps, the consumer noticed the radio would not function in the transmit mode. when trying to transmit, the voltage at the rear vehicle's rear power outlet, it dropped down to about 8 volts. the consumer stated if an owner of this vehicle was to plug anything into the vehicle power outlets that drew more that 5 amps of current there was a good chance that overheating and burning the wires would occur. *jb

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - IGNITION

 1) first, the car cranks (ignition) slowly and then stopped cranking. 2) after ignition is turned off or car stalled, car doesn't start any more. need to wait for about 15 to 30 min. before car starts again. first intermittent, now almost every time. the consequence is that we blocked railway crossings, driveways, intersections and so on. this is a serious safety concern ! 3) - on 8/14/09, the battery was diagnosed to be bad. replaced, didn't fix the problem. ($200) - on 8/18/09, the car was in the shop again, but maintenance guy couldn't find anything since it was intermittent. ($0) - on 9/1/09, the car was in the shop again. this time some warning lights came on. (trans temp, check gauges) this time they found that (possible) transmission temperature range sensor would not allow startup. transmission service was recommended and performed but didn't fix the problem. ($385) - later in october, the car was in the shop again. for 2 weeks without success. dealer mentioned that he was only able to reconstruct the failure once. daily testing didn't show the problem any more. car was picked up on 10/26/09. since that time, the car is having the problem more than 50% of the time. seems that the car need to be driven at least several miles until the problem shows up. - on 10/31/09, car will go to shop again. *tr

My 2004 jeep grand cherokee has a defect in the ecm that chrysler is aware of but will do nothing to fix this problem currently. the vehicle's engine has died at stop lights, it has stumbled, and/or hesitated upon accelerating from stop, and runs so poorly at an idle while setting it shakes the whole vehicle. chrysler is aware of the problem but is doing nothing to fix this problem on the 2004 grand cherokee's. i was basically told by chrysler that i would have to live with this problem running the risk of my vehicle's engine stopping unexpectedly when it could result in an accident. my 2004 jeep grand cherokee is basically an accident waiting to happen if the engine should unexpectedly die at the wrong moment when accelerating.*ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the wiring harness is located on the driver's side door, but the harness is too small to sustain all the wires. when the door is opened, the wires come out of the harness and break, which causes the locks and interior lighting to fail. the interior lighting remains illuminated. if the contact turns off the interior lighting while driving at night, she is unable to see the instrumental panel. the repair would cost $400. a report was filed with the manufacturer and they stated that they will not charge her the total cost for the repair. the dealer will replace the wires and harness at the cost of $100. the failure mileage was 45,000 and current mileage was 55,000.

2004 jeep grand cherokee lost all electrical power inside vehicle on multiple occasions. *kb the consumer was told the problem was a faulty bcm. however, the same problem recurred one month later. in oct 2005, the consumer experienced unwanted acceleration while he was pulling into the garage and hit another vehicle. the consumer stated the check engine light would occasionally come on and then go of. then the rear hatch light would come on, the tire pressure light and the security system stopped working. the dealer then found a broken ground wire in the engine harness. the windows were inoperative.*jb

2004 grand cherokee electrical units stopped working. *ts while driving on a hot day the vehicle electrical system shut down. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who determined that he problem was with the bcm. the bcm was replaced. a week later, on another hot day, the electrical system shut down again but the engine continued to run. as a result the a/c did not work and the power windows could not be rolled down. the vehicle accelerated suddenly while pulling into a garage striking another vehicle. after repeated attempts to ge the vehicle fixed the dealer found a broken ground wire in the engine wiring harness. after nine months the problems have not recurred. the consumer believes the broken ground wire was the cause of the electrical shut down and sudden acceleration. *nm

I lease a 2004 jeep grand cherokee with heated leather seats. earlier this year the driver side heater went out then i noticed that just the lower back heater came on. one day in february after driving for about an hour and 1/2 i got home and tried to take off my sweatshirt but could not as it was melted to my cell phone case. at first i did not know what had happened then upon later investigation i noticed a burn whole in my car seat that ran up what was apparently the heater wire. i am a paraplegic and if it was not for the cell phone case i could have been burned. my concern is for others like me and due to the severity of the heat which could melt a sweat shirt and a phone case that it potentially could ignite clothing. *jb

We purchased a 2004 jeep grand cherokee the end of june 2004. the car had approximately 30-40 miles at purchase. three days after purchase the car cut off on my husband and was difficult to start. the dealership told us they could not look at the car because the check engine light did not come on. while on vacation 1 1/2 weeks after purchase our car shut off while traveling 60 mph on a highway. the car would not start and was towed to a jeep dealership in maryland. that dealership replaced the computer in the car. no incidents occurred for 1 1/2 weeks. then upon our return to south carolina the rpm of our car would suddenly drop to 500 while idling at traffic lights or at a stop. the rpm's would also suddenly drop to 0 and the car would cut off while idling. from the middle of july until the end of august the car was looked at approximately 6 times. the skim module and wiring harness were both replaced in the car. after the wiring harness was replaced the car ceased to have problems for 3000 miles. then on december 4th the car cut off while waiting at a traffic light. the rpm's have now started to once again drop down to below 500 and occasionally they go up and down when the car is not even moving. a co-pilot system was installed to record any errors in the car and no codes or misfires were captured from the car. the dealership has been unable to fix the car and chrysler informed us that they were not willing to replace our car even though they are unable to fix the problem.*ak

My 2004 jeep grand cherokee has a couple power outlets; they look almost like cigarette lighter receptacles. the outlets are marked 20a indicating a 20 amp current capability. the jeep book also indicates these power outlets are able to carry 20 amps, and the jeep shop manual calls these 20 amp circuits. when i disassembled some trim to install a 2-meter ham radio, i saw 2 very small wires connected to the rear power outlet. the jeep shop manual says these are 16 gauge wires. here is the problem: 16 gauge wires will not come near the ability to handle 20 amps of current. in fact, 16 gauge wire current capacity in a cable bundle is around the 5 or 6 amp area. my ham radio draws 8 amps when transmitting, and when plugged in the jeep power outlet, the voltage drop was three volts. what this means is that the wires can severely overheat and become a fire hazard if the consumer believes the advertised 20 amp capability. i have no idea how chrysler/jeep gets away with this. there is a 20 amp fuse in this circuit, so anyone using an inverter or other accessory that actually draws 20 amps is going to seriously overheat or melt the wiring before the fuse blows. *la
