Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.

13 months and a little over 13,000 miles after leasing my brand new 2004 grand cherokee, the steering wheel was shaking uncontrollably every time i'd i hit the brakes. i took the truck to the dealer and they said the rotors were defective, after a long discussion and many back and forth the svce. manager at the dealer decided to replace the front rotors at no cost to me. now 10 months later the problem returned. went back to the dealer, but this time they tell me the rotors are damaged again, but i'll have to pay for the repair, which total cost is over $300. now at 26,624 miles, they need to be replaced again, what's going on? after a friend of mine search the web, she found out that this is the same problem many 2004 grand cherokee owners have encountered. is this a factory defect? even though chrysler doesn't acknowledge it. can rotors get damaged in such a short period of time, this is the second time i leased a jeep, i never had this problem with my 2000 jeep. is anything being done about this?

2004 jeep grand cherokee - all four brake rotors warped at 20,000 miles of normal driving (no trailer, etc.). dealer machined the rotors. suspect warping will occur again in less than 20,000 miles as less metal on rotors now. dealer measured brake pads at 60% rear and 50% front, so those components seem ok. there is something in the design and/or manufacture of the brakes that causes warping. fortunately, no accident.

Brakes developed vibration at highway speeds when trying to slow down. i am suspecting warped rotors which should not happen at 34000 miles.

When i drive my car and i start to brake at in the speed range of 20mph to 65mph, my brake pedal starts to vibrate and my steering wheel starts to shake uncontrollably, i have to start pumping the brakes for the steering wheel to become nearly moderately controllable. i have been reading online that many people with the same year jeep grand cherokee have been having the same problem. even with earlier models. why hasn't there been a recall on this yet, there is something obviously wrong with the brake or steering system.

The steering wheel vibrates horribly and the whole vehicle pulsates forward and back whenever you try to stop. we have replaced the rotors/pads five times since purchasing the jeep new in 2003. it started at 15,054 (aug 04), then 24,038 (class action suit), 34,700 (turned), 36,000, and now again at 46,000(sept 09). well over $1000 into repairs and we still don't feel the vehicle is any safer or make the gc any more pleasant to drive. we don't have much faith in nhsta doing anything about it after reading all the other complaints but thought we would add to the issue. aren't reliable brakes considered something of a safety issue? there are pages and pages of complaints on the internet and chrysler chooses to do nothing. maybe they should have just gone bankrupt since they can't build a reliable vehicle. it seems to us a there should be a recall to repair the faulty brakes, especially after a class action suit was issued in 2006. *tr

About 3,000 miles ago the brakes began to pulse when applied during highway trips. this grew worse as time went on. now they pulse even in the cold weather in december in ct during short trips (2-3 miles). when they pulse, the steering wheel shakes badly (as does the whole vehicle) especially at higher speeds and on longer trips. i will no longer allow my wife to drive it on highways. today i went to action motors (jeep dealership in danbury, ct) and discussed the issue with two service managers. i was told that this was normal and that when brakes get hot' they overheat the rotors and the rotors warp. action motors wanted to replace the rotors at my cost. they said there was no jeep recall on the issue. i mentioned that this was the identical issue that jeep grand cherokees had in 1999 through 2003 and why did i have to pay for the defective design (does jeep not realize that brakes get hot when they are used). they told me the only reason that jeep offered free repair to those model years was that it was a result of a law suit against jeep. they also tried to convince me that this was normal on all makes of cars and to expect it. i have owned many cars in my many years of driving and none have experienced this issue under any conditions or any mileage. seems someone or many must die before jeep accepts responsibility. i do not wish to have jeep repair my brakes at my cost. i no longer trust their intentions or their commitment to safety. i would like to take it to another repair shop but do not know how that might affect any recall directed by nhtsa that may occur in the future. the brake repair will have to been done very soon to make the car safe to operate. shame on jeep. *tr

Front rotors are warped. had them replaced by the dealer at 14,591 miles and resurfaced (turned) at 22,214 miles. both times under warranty. i currently have 29,779 miles on the jeep and the rotors are causing the brakes to, once again, pulsate every time i apply them. it's no longer under warranty. if i have to have them replaced or resurfaced every 8000 miles... this is going add up. if i continue to use them in disrepair, i think this may be dangerous. it feels dangerous. chrysler needs to find a permanent fix for this problem. *tr

Purchased a 2004 jeep grand cherokee 2wd a little over a year ago. within 3500 miles a unbearable front end shake started to occur. within the next 2k-3k miles the front end shake became extremely intense and is still ongoing. when speeds in excess of 30 mph are reached, very intense front end pulsations occur without failure each and everytime the brakes are applied. i have never in my life encountered such an ongoing issue that the manufacturer refuses to take responsibility. thanks daimler/chrysler! i will never own another dodge/jeep/chrysler product again. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the abs would not lock or grip as quickly as it should. the failure caused difficulty when braking. she also noticed that there was a gliding effect when driving 40 mph and attempting to brake. furthermore, she experienced difficulty turning the steering wheel. as a result, she made wide turns due to the amount of effort she had to put into turning the wheel. she took the vehicle to the dealer and they checked the brakes. the dealer changed the brake pads and stated that everything was fine. the second time the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for the abs failure she was informed again that everything was fine. the vehicle has not been inspected for the steering failure. the current mileage was approximately 43,000 and failure mileage was approximately 20.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 10 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal in rainy weather conditions to prepare for an emergency stop, and the pedal went completely to the floor. the vehicle would not stop and the contact crashed into another vehicle. the vehicle also appeared to experience a mild increase in speed instead of the abs unit activating. during the failure, she concluded that when the abs activated, it malfunctioned and prevented her from coming to a complete stop. the contact has a copy of the police report and pictures of the incident. she is in the process of having the vehicle inspected to determine the cause of the failure. she is also in the process of notifying the manufacturer. the vin was unknown. the failure and current mileages were 84,000.

We purchased the vehicle new. after replacing brakes 4 times, we still have pulsing when we brake and the steering wheel shakes horribly. there are only 36,000miles on the vehicle and we have also had to replace the tires due to cupping. no one knows what is causing the problem, they just keep replacing the brakes only to have them continue to pulse. i can't believe any of the mechanics that have looked at the vehicle would enjoy driving a vehicle like this, still we are stuck with it. i read on one site that it could be the calipers; maybe chrysler should look into it. we hold our breath that we will stop when we put on the brakes. why isn't chrysler made accountable for faulty brakes/calipers when it could cause an accident?

In february 2004 i purchased a new 2004 jeep grand cherokee at speed motors (authorized jeep dealer) in brooklyn new york. at 7000 miles the dealer had to replace the breaks because the disks had warped. when i operated the jeep at highway speed and applied the breaks the front end would violently shake. at about 14,000 miles i returned the jeep to the same dealer with the same complaint about violent shaking in the front end. he again replaced the brakes in the front. i have since taken the jeep back to speed motors at least five times with the same complaint. i recently learned that speed motors lost it's business relationship with jeep/chrysler and can no longer service my jeep. i again encounter the violent shaking with the front end and took the car to bayridge jeep in brooklyn new york. i dropped the jeep off and later the service manager calls me at home to explain that the front and rear breaks and disks must be replaced. the services manager than explains to me that this will cost around $875.00. i told the service manager that this is an on going problem with this car. he explained that there was nothing he could do. i paid for the repairs at an authorized jeep dealer to avoid any problems with the warranty and to make a record of the break problems with this vehicle. i call the customer services telephone number for chrysler and spoke to a female operator who than past me on to her male supervisor. when i questioned the male operator about how and why an authorized jeep dealer could put a new york state inspection striker on my car with a clear mind knowing that there are major break problems with this vehicle he blew me off again. i want to go on record as saying that there are major safety issues with this car. the date below of 1-23 -06 is the date i took the vehicle to bayridge jeep. the date of incident is the period from time of purchase to 1-23-06. i fully expect this current break replacement to only last a few thousand miles. *nm

I left a doctor's appointment and turned out of the parking area to find that my brakes were very spongy and it took me about 15 feet to come to a complete stop after only going 8-10 mph. at the next stop sign my brakes completely failed, i could pump them up but they went straight to the ground afterwards. i drove into a busy street because i could not get them to stop and collided with another car going around 45 mph. my airbags did not go off nor did my seatbelt lock when i struck the car. at the scene the police officer noted that the breaks pumped up but were very spongy when pushing them down. however, the dealer finds that there is nothing wrong with the breaking system currently. i am going to have a chrysler authorized representative come and inspect the system.

I am having abs brake problems with this truck. i owned a 2000 jeep grand cherokee for 3 years and had the same problem but it was under warranty. the calipers and rotors had to be replaced 4 times and the truck had less then 30,000 miles. my brake pads were always fine. i traded the truck in early for a 2004 model. the sales man assured me the problem was fixed. after a year, i had the same problem, the rotors and calipers had to be replaced again, and the pads were fine. the mechanic told me the abs is the problem, as when you step on the brakes, it activates and heats up the rotors and damages the calipers because the abs brakes do not release in time to cool off the braking system. chrysler replaced everything because it was under 13,000 miles, but will not if it happens again. why should we have to pay for a system failure? i think chrysler should recall all models with this braking failure and fix it. they are very aware of the problem. *jb

I am reporting the second instance of front brake rotor warping on my 2004 jeep grand cherokee which has ~27,000 miles. the first occurrence was at about 15,000 miles. on braking at speeds of >35 mph (even normal braking - not emergency braking), there is an excessive front end shimmy and chatter that seems dangerous. it seemed very unusual that the front rotors had warped at 15,000 miles, but the dealer said that brakes were not covered under the jeep warranty so we paid for turning them. now the front rotors are warped again and will require service. the dealer again says that this is not covered under the warranty so i will have to pay for turning them again or replacing them. we do not pull anything with the vehicle and rarely use the brakes for anything but routine stopping, so the rotors should not warp so frequently. clearly there are design problems with this that could create an unsafe situation when braking if i were not to have the rotors fixed so frequently. for example, if the steering wheel were not gripped tightly during braking the vehicle could easily go out of control. *jb

*jb

Our 2004 jeep grand cherokee special edition began shuddering when applying brake pressure. this is an extremely dangerous occurrence as it could easily shudder out of the driver's control. we took the vehicle in with 13,365 miles on it. norman chrysler jeep dodge service center stated that the rotors were warped out of round .006 a piece. both these and the brake pads were replaced. the dealership would not replace this under warranty. we were forced to pay out of pocket for something that was far beyond normal wear and tear. the service center rep told my husband that your wife rides the brake. this is not a true statement and i feel that daimler chrysler is shrugging off responsibility for a potentially dangerous safety issue. searching the internet i have found many many complaints of the same issue. we are currently up to 18,000 miles and i am waiting for the rotors to warp again. there is now a class action settlement associated with this obvious safety issue. *nm

I have taken my 2004 jeep grand cherokee to the dealer twice for front end braking problems. pulsating sensation occurs when braking @ speeds 40 & over. vibration occurs into the steering wheel. on my first visit, was told nothing is wrong... on my second visit, was told the rotors were warped..there was only 17,000 miles on the vehicle! i drive 8 miles a day to work on city streets and i am not a heavy brake user. the dealer wanted 200.00 per rotor !! i have never had rotors go bad so fast. i was advised to wait it out..that the parts have to be defective. on a recent trip to the mountains, the problem with the brakes was very evident. the vehicle vibrated & pulsated so bad i feared for my life. now that i am back in florida, the problem is barely noticeable unless i am on a 4 lane roadway doing 35-40 mph. i planned to take the jeep elsewhere for brake service when i received a notice of a class action lawsuit regarding this problem. i have received a free brake inspection.. i've already paid for 2 brake inspections!! i want the problem fixed....as it should have been when i first complained. *jb

I leased a brand new 2004 special edition jeep grand cherokee in december of 2003. at approximately 25,000 miles of normal driving conditions, the front end began shaking violently when applying pressure to the brakes. after reviewing the my car stats website i questioned whether it could be a rotor problem. i called the dealership and was told it would not be covered by warranty. the local dealership turned the rotors, reporting they were badly warped. they also ensured me that it would happen again and was widely known to be a jeep grand cherokee issue. my understanding is that rotors should last much longer than 25,000 miles. i do not believe i should have to pay over $100 to correct an issue that is obviously a design flaw. i also do not intend to keep the vehicle beyond the term of the lease as i do not want to invest $400-$500 each time this happens. for anyone out there considering a daimler chrysler product, think twice before signing on the dotted line. *jb

I purchased a 2004 jeep grand cherokee in august of 2004. within the first 7000 miles i had to replace the front rotors and pads due to warping. daimler/chrysler covered this service and replacement under warranty. within the next 7000 miles they had warped again. daimler chrysler would not cover them this time. i had to pay out of pocket for aftermarket rotors and pads which were a better quality than what daimler/chrysler used the first time. these rotors and pads have lasted about 12000 miles and have warped again. i highly doubt that someone buying a jeep product would think that they have to change their front rotors and pads close to twice per year. i have learned to live with the shake that occurs due to the warping however when exiting a highway and decelerating from high speeds the shake is unbearable. i never expected to have to replace my front rotors and pads so frequently. on my last vehicle which wasd a ford i replaced them every 24000 miles. i am aware that jeep replaced the front calipers on their 1999 jeep grand cherokees due to this problem. i hope that they issue a recall for these calipers soon before i am broke from repairing my front brakes. thank you for taking my complaint. *nm

We bought a new 2004 jeep cherokee and shortly after the 12000 warranty work we noticed an increasing shudder and excessive vibration when braking. at the 15000 mile warranty work, we brought it to the dealership attention. the vehicle was checked and found that the front wheel rotors were out of round and required turning. the dealership and service personnel have always been helpful and able to assist us with the vehicle but in this case they were unable to correct the defect. as we felt this was a manufacturing defect and safety hazard, we were told it was not covered after 12000 miles. telephone contact with the national number for chrysler was terse and were advised again that this was not covered. when asking to addressed this with a person higher up, i was informed that that was not possible and that this person was authorized to make all decisions relative to the problem. not feeling safe with the performance of the vehicle, we went back to the dealership and had the rotors turned. apparently, this will be an expected expense every 12000 miles. it was a definite safety hazard especially when braking going down inclines. i have been told this is a common defect for the jeep cherokees. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the rotors warped resulting in front end vibration at speeds of 50 to 60 mph. the brake pads and rotors were replaced by the service dealer three times. the replacement pads and rotors failed after driving about 6,000 miles and the contact is concerned this pattern will continue. the first time the vehicle was taken to the dealer, the front and rear brake pads and rotors were replaced. during the next two visits, only the front brake pads and rotors were replaced. the dealer was unable to provide an explanation for the wear until this most recent visit, 3/16/06, where it was determined to be caused by aggressive braking. vehicle pulsated when coming to stop at traffic signal at speed of 25 mph. contact felt it was a safety problem because of failure to stop or loss of control. vehicle vibrated excessively when slowing at speeds of 50 mph or higher or for on/off ramps or traffic back ups on highways. it felt as if vehicle will not stop or lose control due to warped brake rotors. happened on three occasions; 09/29/ 2005, 05/05/2005, and 05/16/2006. *ak

Bought 2004 jeep grand cherokee in november 2004. over the course of six months and 8,000 miles, brake rotors began to warp and cause increased braking distances and instability during braking. dealer replaced the front rotors, and braking returned to normal. over the course of the next 11 months and 19,000, the pulsation in the brakes returned causing instability in braking and longer braking distances. manufacturer warranty has expired (12/12,000 miles for rotors). i will replace rotors with better quality parts to prevent warping in the future.*jb

(3) original rotors machined in place @ 16k miles; rotors and pads replaced @ 30k miles. requested dealer measure new rotors with micrometer to ensure initial variation in thickness within daimler chrysler specs. run out measurements also requested, made and recorded prior to and after installation.

*jb

Dt: the contact stated the brake rotors were warped. when driving at highway speeds and needed to make a panic stop the steering wheel vibrated violently. the contact lost control of the vehicle. the vehicle has been corrected twice for this problem. the first time was on may 7, 2004 at 9,175 miles on the vehicle. they resurfaced the rotors. the second time was on 3-15-05 at 17,664 miles when they replaced the rotors. the manufacturer stated because of the mileage of the vehicle they will not stand behind it. however, they have corrected the vehicle twice for the same problem prior to this failure. if the brake rotors needed to be corrected again it will be at the contact's expense. the vehicle now has 24,700 miles on it. this problem occurred within 5000 miles of each failure. the contact stated there were other complaints on the 2003 models and the manufacturer corrected them. *ak

The rotors on my 2004 jeep grand cherokee are defective. at 31,000 miles, i felt a pulsing when i applied the brakes. the dealer inspected my brakes and said the front rotors were warped 0.4. i do not use brakes heavily. the pads still have 3/8(i have the old pads) remaining after 31,000 miles. when i had the rotors turned i asked the mechanic if this was unusual and his comment was, chrysler keeps him very busy. he also told me that he had to turn them down to the minimum allowed, so if this happens again i will have to buy new rotors. i replaced the brake pads, to be on the safe side. when i was bleeding the brake lines, i noticed the caliper twisted the rotor inward when braking pressure was applied. i am 62 and this is my first chrysler car. i have never had to have the rotors turned on any of my previous cars, which before this jeep were all gm cars. i believe the rotors and/or calipers/brake system is defective and need to be recalled and fixed. i contacted chrysler in october about this problem and they have not answered me to date. *jb

Warped brakes on 2004 grand cherokee. eas told by dealer it was due to the fact that i do lots of city driving. after doing some research this is a common problem in grand cherokees. i even had an associate that sold his for similar problem. while braking on highway the car violently shakes and is dangerous. this is the vehicle i transport my child in and it is not a responsible feeling i get when i put her in the car. chrylser needs to address this issue with their customers. looking at research i did this problem goes back at least 8 years. *jb

Our 2003 model year jeep grand cherokee has terrible brake rotors. the jeep is used by my wife for a daily driver. we live in ohio in a fairly flat area. the vehicle is driven in town 95% of the time. the vast majority of that time is on the same road with a speed limit of 35mph. it is not a congested area that requires significant and or sudden braking. the rotors began to warp around 5,000 miles. the next scheduled oil change was around 8000 miles, and we had them replaced at that point. the rotors warped severely again around 20,000 miles. at which point the dealer fooled my wife into paying them for replacement chrysler rotors as the brake warranty was neither covered under the 3/36 bumper-to-bumper warranty nor the 7-70 powertrain warranty. if i had not thought them to be under warranty, i would have never had the dealership replace them with components of such shoddy quality that they will warp again inside of one calendar year. the service manager told my wife that rotors should only last 10,000 miles. i am an automotive mechanical engineer. i uinderstand that the factors that contribute to rotor warpage are only heat and installation. given the use of this vehicle (we don't even have a tow package), excessive heat can be eliminated. the failure mode eliminates improper installation. poor quality material, not enough material, and inadequate manufacturing processes could cause warpage with significnatly lower heat threashold. since chrysler and now dc has been having the problem for decades, and they have changed the calipers in the '02 model year, i suggest that nhtsa pressure dc to upgrade the quality of the rotors. all they have to do is shed heat and take the wear of the brake pads on their surface. it is one of the more simple components in a vehicle. i would suggest that they not only replace the rotors for all grand cherokee owners, but replace them with a reputable name (non dc oem) rotors. this would alleviate all issues.

2004 jeep grand cherokee on 3rd set of front rotors at 18,869 miles. rear rotors identified with same problem and jeep will not cover under warranty. multiple communications with jeep have failed to resolve issue. however, when we emailed jeep to inquire about whether or not rotors were upgraded on 2005 model to fix brake rotor problems identified on 1999-2004 model we were informed that yes we did update the rotors on the 2005 model grand cherokee and changed the vendor for the rotors. this, i believe, indicated that they identified a problem which required them to not only update the rotors but it was also severe enough to change vendors. i feel that jeep should upgrade our front and rear rotors to either the 2005 model rotor (if appropriate) or upgrade to a different type of rotor which does not have a history of warping requiring replacement.
