Failure of heating system components - blend doors. regardless of temperature selected and fan output, design flaw in blend doors of heating system can result in no heat including no way to defrost / defog the front windshield, impeding driver's ability to see in cold weather. faulty plastic parts break. apparently this is a widespread problem with many jeep models / years but no recall ever issued. cost in excess of $1,500 to repair estimated.

Blend doors broken on passenger side so no heat comes from dash. no use of defroster on passenger side.. this cant be good for the windshield with hot and cold air blowing on it. repair costs are ridiculous for a factory problem that many people seem to have. *tr

There is creaking from the dash seconds after shutting the engine off. cold air blows from one side of the dash even when you have the heat turned on high. dealer says this is the blend door problem. i already had this unit replaced at 70k miles and now it is failing again. dealer states it is due to the design of using plastic parts that break. *tr

During winter months, heat shuts off and turns cold. this happened during a snowstorm and i could not defrost the windshield. i consider this a serious safety issue. i had to stop engine, wait 5 minutes and start engine again. this has happened every time the car is driven. in the summer months, the reverse happens. suddenly, the air conditioner suddenly throws out hot air. *tr

While driving down the freeway the hvac vents suddenly began to blow hot air in ac mode & switch back & forth. later after reading the haynes manual i did a diagnostic on the heater system & got a code 54 showing a blend door problem. researching this on the internet jeep forums discovered that many grand cherokee limited have a blend door failures due to the design (plastic pins etc) on the temp doors in the system. my problem w/ this is what happens when this fails in the winter & your defroster won't blow hot air only cold. seems like a safety related problem to me. from the internet forums it sounds like a lot of the limited series 1999-2004 have this problem. *tr

Air/ defroster won't blow out any air at all or will blow out hot air on one side of the jeep and cold air out the other side even though the settings are the same. this will happen on and off until it breaks totally. i have had mine fixed 3 times 12/29/06, 03/28/07, 06/08/09. you cannot defog/ defrost the windshield properly and keep it clear when you are driving. each time the dealer replaced the faulty part housing a 240213290, actuator 24029001, housing a 2428025 and again housing a 24028025. this is a known issue for the 2004 jeep grand cherokee and you can find a lot of talk on the internet about the cheap plastic parts that are used . you can find after market aluminum part but that's not what the dealer uses. this should not happen on a jeep that only has 36,000 mile on it..it's like its used alot. at $800.00 a pop its starting to add up. *tr

I have a digital dual climate zone in my vehicle. recently the heat started to work only on one side (drivers) and not the passengers. after researching the issue, it looks like there is systemic problem with the mechanical recirculation and ventilation doors for the heating/cooling system as i found many complaints online with many who have had the same issue. in addition, i called a dealership with the problem codes that i got from running a diagnostic test via the heating/cooling control panel and the dealership also told me this is a very common issue and that it would cost a minimum of $800 to fix. the price to repair was consistent with what others were saying during my research. this is a safety issue as if i have not heat i can not defrost my windows in the winter. *tr

The event occurred as i was backing out of my driveway. my rear view mirror was out of view and i went to adjust it. i remembered the window motor on the drivers side had a short so i went to adjust it manually. as i put slight pressure on the mirror the whole thing folded back. i figured it was okay seeing as they were designed to fold back, but when i put them back in place, they did not stay. now, as i drive down the road, the mirrors fold themselves in without warning and it is making me very worried that i cannot see out of my mirror. *tr

In cold weather, while using the windshield defroster, the hot air needed to keep frost off windshield suddenly changes to cold air on its own. this is very aggravating, and poses a great danger in not keeping the windshield clear. this happens very frequently. the dealership can make a repair, but the cost is prohibitive. *tr

Several 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees that i have owned (i have had 4) had their blender doors malfunction. this results in a $1600 fee to have the heat/cooling vents repaired so you can get ac or heat. it is a chronic jeep problem that deserves a recall as it happens to everyone's jeeps it seems. i have a current 2004 model where all three separate blender doors are broken resulting in no heat or cooling. *tr

Heater sporadically works (blows cold air and defroster doesn't work) in my 2004 grand jeep cherokee overland. problem usually self corrects after several hours of driving. dealer states it is likely a blender door problem, but will not fix under my bumper to bumper extended chrysler warranty until the problem presents itself in the dealers possession. so far, they claim it has not presented itself despite several trips to dealer. *tr

Failure of climate control blend door mechanism. this has happened three times to this vehicle. when it fails, you cannot control the a/c or heat on each side of the vehicle. i repaired on both occasions at a cost of $900 and $700 respectively. the vehicle is now broken again, which will cost another $900-1200 to repair for the same issue. the dealership said this is very common in this model. obviously a case of an inferior product or input for this component. i have contacted jeep /chrysler and they refuse to do anything. *tr

The blend doors are breaking on my 2004 grand cherokee limited. they are known to fail after approx. 50k to 80k miles, causing the defroster to not work properly. this is a big safety issue, especially in the winter when the defroster is so essential. *tr

On are 2004 jeep grand cherokee overland with automatic climate control the blend doors have failed and this causes the hvac unit to either blow hot or cold when turned on but you have no control of it. we have had the a/c kick on when unit was set to heat/defrost in the middle of winter and this causes a safety issue as the windshield will start icing up or fogging up if it's not real cold out and as my wife drives this vehicle daily i want her in a safe vehicle. we have also had the heater kick on when using the a/c and all you can do is turn the hvac unit off and roll down the windows. from what i have been told all grand cherokee's have this problem just at different intervals. i know some people who have had multiple failures of this part. to get the repairs done at a dealer we were quoted $950 to fix it but i believe jeep should be looking into this as it is such a common problem and it causes a major safety issue during the winter months if and when the heater/defroster quits working. when the hvac system gets stuck there is nothing you can do to fix it sometimes it will stick for a few hours other times it will not work for a day or two. *tr

Research has shown all 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees with electronic dual climate controls will eventually require major repair in order to cure hot air/cold air blowing from vents when they're not set to do so. the cost to repair this issue, which has been known to pop up again after another 50k miles after repair, is generally $800-$1500 from a dealership. *tr

In april or may of this year, the driver-door window of our jeep slid into the body of the door on it's own--this was while the car was parked on the street. we were lucky to catch it before someone stole all of our items in the car. a repairman told us that the cable/regulator is broken and that it is very common with jeeps. we couldn't afford the $250-300 part, so we simply screwed the window in place, temporarily. this past weekend while driving on the freeway at 65 mph our passenger window did the same thing. it was late friday night so all we could do is duct-tape the window in place. we called chrysler/jeep to see if there is any recall, and they were completely unhelpful. they simply told us to get a $200 diagnosis from a jeep dealership and then they would decide if chrysler/jeep would assist in the cost. we visited many consumer websites and found thousands (no exaggeration) of complaints of the very same problem. those who ended up getting a diagnosis with a dealership never ended up being refunded by chrysler/jeep. in the end, they simply paid chrysler/jeep more money having gone through their suggested process. this is clearly and faulty part and chrysler/jeep's refusal to recall or reimburse its customers is alarming. the parts are very expensive and with so many complaints of the same nature we should not have to pay chrysler/jeep more money for something that is clearly their problem. weather has nothing to do with the failure of the part(s)--they simply break without warning. something must be done about this. both of our windows are currently being held into place by screw or tape as we consider our options. we do not trust chrysler/jeep and believe that even if we go to a dealership we will end up paying for the repair all on our own. it is a considerable expense for a common default and has given us a great deal of stress. chrysler/jeep representatives have been unsympathetic, ambiguous, and untrustworthy. please help! *tr

Passenger side heat does not work in our 2004 jeep gr. cherokee. it is related to a door within the climate control system. it sounds like there are many people who have had the same problem with this. estimated cost to fix is $800-$1000. the windshield will not defrost because all that blows is cold air. this is a safety hazard that needs to be addressed. daimler chrysler needs to be responsible for these defective parts. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. the vehicle is equipped with a dual control a/c, which allows the driver and passenger to control the temperature on their own side of the vehicle. the contact stated that the blend door on the front passenger side was defective. the door prevents heat from entering and causes the defroster to work only on the driver side of the vehicle. she took the vehicle to a repair shop and was informed that the failure was due to a faulty blend door. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 48,000 and current mileage was 52,000. updated 10/24/07

When driving my 2004 jeep grand cherokee in cold weather with rain or any moisture on the windshield the hvac ducts will blow cold air on the windshield causing the windshield to freeze quicker while decreasing my visibility while driving. the vehicle tends to have this problem 7 out of 10 starts and some times resets it self only when the jeep has been sitting for at least 3 to 5 hours. the dealer claimed it was in working order but i told them there is a serious problem that caused me to nearly hit the car in front of me while driving when the windshield instantly started to freeze up. luckily i kept spraying washer fluid to clear the window in time before i got into a major accident. *jb

2004 jeep grand cherokee 'blend door' breaks causing no heat to get to the windshield for defrosting. dealerships state it is a $1200 - $1500 fix and it is very common for this problem to occur on most trucks of this model year. in winter months you cannot defrost your windshield or get heat to the interior. this fix is a mechanical flaw, not an owner issue yet chrysler makes you pay to repair their faulty engineering. *nm
09/07/20064208/19/2003
Automatic climate control system failure leads to loss of windshield defroster. system failure is caused by failure of the blend doors to respond to user input. system failure results in loss of airflow through windshield defrost/defog vents. operation of vehicle during inclement weather and system failure will result in decreased visibility through front windshield which could contribute to collision, loss of vehicle control, etc... no manual override of automatic system is possible. repair requires removal of complete dash to remove and replace blend door assemblies. *nm

The blender doors on my 2004 jeep grand cherokee's ventilation system failed without warning. i can only get air flow from the windshield defroster vent. this makes if difficult to warm up the vehicle in the winter. according to my research on the web, this type of failure is ridiculously common on this jeep model. i have scheduled an appointment to get the problem fixed, but my dealer has already warned me that the repair costs will be at least $500 or more. the dealer also stated that they had already performed the same repair on 2 other jeeps this winter. once repaired, there is no guarantee that it won't happen again. chrysler should recall the affected vehicles and come up with a solution to the problem. *tr

Research has shown all 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees with electronic dual climate controls will eventually require major repair in order to cure hot air/cold air blowing from vents when they're not set to do so. the cost to repair this issue, which has been known to pop up again after another 50k miles after repair, is generally $800-$1500 from a dealership. should you opt to do this repair yourself, the entire dashboard will need to be removed, quite the arduous process, and parts are approximately >$300. does your dashboard have a loud creaking sound coming from its underside when you turn on your ventilation? is there creaking from the dash seconds after shutting the engine off? are there strange numbers popping-up on your climate control display? does cold ir blow from one side of the dash even when you have the heat turned on? your ventilation system may have failed, or, may be in the process of failing. yes to all of the aforementioned. how in god's name has this not turned into a major legal dispute?! this, by far, is more costly than the repetitive brake problems a wj owner would go through. we're all going to get it eventually... eventually we're all going to have to fork out anywhere from $300 to $1500 to fix it, so this is in no way comparable to the infamous brake problem since not everyone was affected by it. *tr

I own a 2004 jeep grand cherokee limited with 66,000 miles. in august 2006, the ac quit functioning when air temperatures exceeded 85f. after a recalibrating, everything seemed fine. but when the temperature dropped the passenger heat failed while the drivers side continued to function. the dealership replaced the blend air assembly per the tsb - at my expense. didn't fix the problem so they recalibrated the system again. worked for about 1 month. then no heat on the driver side while passenger side has heat from the top vent but not the lower. the right side blend doors have been replaced twice & system recalibrated 4 times- again at my expense. still no heat on drivers side or lower passenger side. keeping the windshield is problematic in poor weather conditions. service manager says he isn't getting any help from daimler chrysler. as temperatures have been below zero this is a serious safety hazard. *jb

I have had 3 window regulators break in my 2004 jeep cherokee. the regulator itself is a faulty product, made of cheap plastic instead of something that is built to last with metal. daimler-chrysler took a major shortcut to save a few bucks and now jeep owners are paying for it. each window regulator costs about 277 dollars from a jeep dealership, and they charge $500 for parts and labor to fix 1 (one) regulator. i've had 3 fail and replaced, so i've paid $1500 on a 4 year old american vehicle...on the windows!! this is ridiculous and this product should be recalled, and jeep owners should be reimbursed for all expenses, or have all 4 window regulators replaced free of charge. *tr

While driving at 55 mph on interstate 45n, we heard a loud pop, almost like a tire exploding. the driver side window collapsed inside the door, the noise and change in the environment caused the driver, my spouse, to snap her head in the direction of the wind and noise. she has pain in her neck from turning so quickly. realizing we were not being hit by another vehicle, she looked back to the road ahead where her attention should have been, only to realize she had seconds to avoid running off the road. when we pulled over to inspect what was happening, our little dog jumped out the window onto interstate 45. thank god we were able to get her to safety before the day got worse. we called our local dealer whom we paid a considerable amount of cash for the 2004 jeep cherokee special edition, they advised us it would cost $75 to diagnose the problem, most likely the windows regulator, $250 dollars for the part and $150 for the regulator. i asked about the vehicles warranty and was advised it was only 3 years. not sure what a window regulator was, i searched the internet, to learn that thousands of jeep owners have had this issue during the first few years of ownership. it appears there is a serious issue with these window regulators and the issue is being ignored by the manufacturer. this is an extremely dangerous condition and we are fortunate it did not result in a major incident. the design and/or mechanisms need to change to improve the safety of those navigating in a chrysler jeep product. bi shared my concerns with the service manager at the dealership i bought the suv. i was treated with respect when i was buying, but now my concerns fall on deaf ears. this won?t help me, but i hope it prevents someone from a similar experience. i will sell the vehicle at a reduced price, my spouse is afraid to drive it. she fears it happening again spontaneously and on all four windows. *tr

I bought a new 2004 jeep grand cherokee from hoover chrysler/jeep in summerville sc. while still on warranty the drivers side automatic window failed to the down position due to a defective regulator. this occurrence happened in our second year of ownership and was repaired by the dealership. the same failure occurred again to the drivers side rear window on 4/4/07 and again to the passengers front window on 9/15/07. all of these failures were attributed to a common regulator neither the local dealership nor chrysler corp. has issued any recall or admitted any capability for this obviously defective part. *jb

Passenger side window regulator broke - this type of part should not break on a 2004 vehicle. as i read online there are many many complaints about this problem. apperently there are so many problems with this part, my local auto-zone store could not even order the part from their supplier. jeep dealers want in excess of $400 dollars for parts and labor to fix this. major incoveince considering my vehichle cannot be used now for at least a week and i will need to take a limo to and from the airport at an expense of $270 roundtrip until the part gets delivered. this simply is not a part that should fail especially in a car that is only 3.5 years old -

The 2004 jeep cherokee with 42,000 miles on it had window regulators on both front doors malfunctioned on separate occasions. one regulator was covered under warranty and replaced by the dealership. i paid another party to replace the other regulator. this could have resulted in an unsafe situation due to no control over the window units. on one event it was raining ,and on the other event, the car was parked in a public parking lot.*ak

Rear passenger (electric) window fell down and would not go back up. i purchased an extended warranty when i purchased the vehicle (70k) with a $100 dollar deductible. i took the vehicle in to have the problem fixed and was charged a $98 fee to look at the problem. i was called the next day and informed that i would have to pay another $98 to further diagnose the problem. when i told the dealership i would not pay anymore money because of my warranty, they disconnected the switch and rolled the window up instead. this problem remains unresolved. *tr

My wife and i own two jeep grand cherokees, a '99 the an '04. in 1999, jeep changed the design of their grand cherokees and one design change poses a safety risk to passengers in the back seats, especially young children. models produced starting in 1999 allow for the windows in the back seats to roll down, leaving a gap between the window and the frame on that part of the window closest to the rear seat passenger. the 1998 jeep allowed for the window to be rolled down and the gap between the window and the frame was at the front of the window, furthest from the passenger. on several occassions we have rolled down the windows and my children (ages 2 and 4) , attracted by having the wind hit their hand, have stuck their fingers between this gap area. when the windows are rolled up, their fingers get crushed between the window and the frame. i have previously contacted jeep about this problem and they were only concerned about was whether my children's fingers were broken. their solution, use the window locks on the driver's console. however, that does not solve the problem. i can only guarantee their hands are not in the windows by turning around and continuing to look as i roll the windows up. this is distracting and not a safe course of action. but this was their recommendation. my wife and i did not pay tens of thousands of dollars for vehicles that cause pain to our children. whether they have broken their fingers is irrelevent and really shows a lack of responsibility by jeep. i spoke to representatives of jeep and they are well aware of this problem. from our conversation, only if my chidren suffered broker fingers would they compensate us and/or correct the problem. apparently, no broken bones means its not their problem. i would think a company would rather be proactive and not reactive. (the date below is when the latest incident occured but this has occured multiple times.)

We were driving our 2004 jeep grand cherokee limited down an open highway (no trees, no cars around, etc.) at about 65 mph, and the sunroof exploded. it sounded like a gunshot, extremely loud. fortunately, we did not have the interior roof open, and the glass that shattered did not get inside the vehicle. we explained the situation to the jeep dealership, and they said the repair of our sunroof would not be covered under the warranty since they had never heard of this happening before. we noticed on the nhtsa web site (via another complaint) that this had happened before to someone else, and the scenario is almost exactly the same -- same vehicle, same year. the other complaint shown on this site was logged february 2005.*jb

While driving a 2004 jeep grand cherokee on i495n going about 65 mph with the sun roof fully closed, the sun roof glass exploded, showering glass throughout the car. initially i thought someone threw a rock and struck the window, but we were not near an overpass, nor were trucks or other cars closs enough to toss a rock up in order to hit the moonroof glass. a rock was not found in the car upon inspection. the local jeep dealer said that it must have been a rock that hit the window and therefore would not be covered under the warranty. i think the window just failed from either stress or from a manufacturing defect...but how do i prove it?*ak
