The elctrical system has a mind of its own. on some occasions all the dormant indicators simply light up (tire inflation, check engine, seat belt ect) at other times we lose total electrical on the interior and dash. we lose fuel gauge, heater fan, dash lights, radio ect. then it comes back to life. even the best mechanics cannot find a ghost. jeep has a problem and they better acknowledge it fast or someone will die. i have seen the same problem described by many, many owners. they cant all be crazy.

Exact same scenario.... traveling down the road, stopped at a light and car went into limp mode with the esp mode disabled lit up on the dash. car was idling at just under 2k rpm and would not accelerate. car normally idles at just under 1k rpm. with my foot on the brake the car wanted to drive forward, light turned green and let off the brake, i was doing 20mph without my foot on the gas. i pulled over and shut the car off, restarted and ran fine for a day. next day i broke down 5 times coming home from work. car would run fine and all of a sudden i would feel a power surge in acceleration and i knew it was coming, next stop light car would start to idle funny and light turns green, no power. no matter how hard i smashed the gas pedal, rpms would not move from just under 2k. i shut the car off, restarted and took off like normal. im going to the dealer tomorrow to have it checked out and im taking statements from this page to show the dealer that there are many people having this problem and cannot fix it.. i am positive jeep knows about this problems and will not admit to it. hey if we have enough people can any say class action law suit???? oh yeah remember i said i have video of this??? because everyone said dealer could not replicate the problem or figure it out? i also have a 15,000$ paper weight in my driveway that's worth no more than 400$ at the local scrap yard. i've had to many problems with this jeep and this is the last straw. jeeps are junk, and remember its a jeep thing, you wouldn't understand. yeah they are right on that, i don't think anyone understands!!! i also have recorded video of this if anyone from jeep wants to contact me. *tr

This has happened a lot. while driving all the intrument lights will flash, causing the ac/heater to turn off and on, headlights to go off, and traction control to turn off. twice recently the vehicle has shifted itself into reverse with the gear selector still in drive. i have taken it to a shop and they went through the entire electrical system and could not find a source for this problem. all jeep owners i have talked with (over 30) have this exact same issue. this is extremely unsafe and jeep needs to be held responsible. *tr

The vehicle will not idle when hitting the brakes at a stop sign or traffic light.or coming to a complete stop resulting in a rear end collision. from the vehicle not maintaining a normal idle position.this is a danger to the vehicle occupants and anybody else on the road .jeep is aware of the problems and have not come up with a solution for the customers.i have seen this same thing reported to the nhtsa onrecord a million times and will see this issue gets adressed if i have to call a senator that is a good friend of mine somebody is going to answer for this! to read the amount of complaints that have been reported to the nhtsa and nothing has been done is unaceptable and i can assure you the nhtsa better invetigate this imediately. this pertains to jeep grand cherokee 2005 v8 4.7 liter motor found in 57% of all jeeps that were built. you can go to youtube and see this in a video of this happing and its also on the jeep forums web site posted a million times.

I was driving the 2005 grand cherokee that we puchased and on the second day after purchasing the car at 80,000 miles the interior and exterior lights started flickering on and off and all the emergency light would come on. we took the vehicle back to the dealer we purchased from told them about the problem, so they ran a diagnostic on it and drove it and could find nothing wrong. now recently the problem started to worsen as my wife drives the car at night with our 3 year old daughter in the vehicle the light are flickering on and off then completely going blank and not coming back on. this is very unsafe and dangerous to have a vehicle that the headlights go off when needed especially driving down the dark roads of texas. something absolutely needs to be done immediately about this problem, everytime i take the vehicle to shop cant ever find anything wrong. this issue is putting my family and other family's at danger. we depend on our vehicle to be reliable and safe. i thought i was the only one experiencing this problem and that it was an electrical problem but it is obviously a defect on these 2005 vehicles. my vehicle is now at 90,000 miles and the issues have got worse. chrysler needs to do something about this immediately before is results in a fatality. *tr

Tl the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that within 2-3 days, the air conditioning unit failed completely. the contact consulted a local mechanic and a local dealer, whom both advised that a red dye would have to be added to the vehicle in order to determine if there was a leak somewhere within the unit. the entire process would take approximately two weeks. the dye was added to the vehicle however, the contact stated that the fumes were offensively strong and toxic, entering through the vents at all times whether the air conditioner was activated or not. the dealer advised the contact that the entire dashboard would have to be removed in order to replace the evaporator coil. the repair would take approximately eight hours for $1,800 at the owners expense. the contact stated that the instructions regarding adding freon to the vehicle advised of a possible explosion, which the contact believed was extremely dangerous. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that freon was leaking onto his driveway, which the contact was concerned because it was a toxic and unsafe chemical. the failure mileage was 104,000. the current mileage is 114,000. kmj

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee (first incident) while turning a corner at approximately 15-20mph revved up, would not shift, and prnd were all lit up on the dash, as well as the engine light came on. after a few starts the engine light has gone off. second incident, from dead stop at a light and accelerating, same issue. engine light goes off again. this has now occured 4 times within 2 months and is a safety hazard considering the fact that your speed drops down out of no where and can potentially cause a serious accidents, causing harm to car a drivers, especially behind you, them not being aware that you are suddenly about to drop speed without brake lights!

When turning the ignition key to the start position, you hear 1 click but the vehicle does not start. this is an intermittent event that seems to come and go every few months. when it happens, i have to leave the key in the on position for about 1 - 2 minutes, then attempt to start the engine again. i had previously had my vehicle serviced at the dealership for this problem, but since it is so random, the service personnel could not recreate the event. i even advised them that other owners, registering this same complaint, pointed to corroded solenoid wires as being the culprit. however, the service department had me purchase a new battery last year. this did not fix the condition which continues periodically to this very day. unfortunately, the car has been unable to start at a few times when the surroundings were less than totally safe. i have viewed a number of consumer forums, such as http://autoforum.classifieds1000.com/jeep-grand_cherokee/2005_jeep_gc_not_starting?pg=10. all of these owners have the exact issue but each time, when presented with the details of the occurrences, dealerships disavow all knowledge that this condition exists. many consumers are being told by the dealerships that no other owners have complained about this.

While driving the entire electrical system fails; lights start flashing, heat goes out, all system warning lights flash ( brakes, tire pressure, service 4 wheel drive system, check engine light comes on), i was able to contiue to drive the car but the lights flashed continously for approximtely 15 miles. this has happened mutiple times since i purchased the suv june 2005. the dealership runs test by say they cannot find anything wrong. i have read on the internet that this is happening to many owners of the 2005 jeep grand cherokee and the dealers and mechanics at the dealership cannot find anything wrong. this is a dangerous situation as many people also loose power and the suv shift into low gear. i am afraid to drive my jeep now because the check engine light keeps coming on and off. i am going back to the dealership again for some more stupid i did not find anything wrong statements. originally i was told it was because i had a remote starter so i has it disconnected and the problem still exists.

Purchased vehicle 8/9/08. at this time only problem we was you had to press clock button for radio to work. during 2008 we noticed a lot of odd behavior in electrical areas. october 29, 2009 brought jeep to used car dealership with these complaints: first check engine light started coming on, then it began flashing, door chime starts dinging, illuminated areas dim & brighten-flashing, dashboard lights go crazy flashing on & off, interior lights turn on & off, transmission lights go crazy & need to shift down in order to get vehicle to drive, headlights & tail lights flash on and off which is very unsafe while driving on a dark highway at night. used car dealership had car towed to jeep dealership in new london. these repairs cost $500.12 for faulty crank sensor, sensor crankshaft, spark plugs, leak at trans electrical. august 17, 2011 took to a new dealership w/ same problems. went to valenti jeep in mystic, ct. was advised junction block needed to be replaced and codes in multiple modules reset-this cost $318.52. september 10, 2011 back to valenti jeep for same problems & for install. of junction box costing $249.00 because of installation costs & other items we were advised to take care of. meanwhile as a warning this all begins after check engine light starts flashing. by september 28, 2011 it begins again: at this time check engine light & all other lights start up again, along with fact that you can now pull key out & vehicle is still running. blinking dash lights, ac on & off, gauges drop to 0, told only reason this is happening is because we have remote start system they don't use. tech reset system & disconnected our remote start system at a cost of $90.40. then by october of 2011-approximately, check engine light has returned & transmission lights are blinking. also headlights started flashing & tail lights. these issues are very sporadic.

Vehicle stalls at random, and looses power steering capability, can cause a crash on windy roads. very scary. has been to dealer multiple times in arizona and has not been able to fix. they tried to fix it under warranty and under extended warranty from chrysler. also when vehicle stalls looses power, can't immediately open windows or doors. doors on this vehicle also interior handles all were broken prematurely right after warranty expired at 48000 miles. this second problem is so common that dealer doesn't have part in stock, factory back order and jeep won't fix it. this second problem is a safety issue as well because can't open door, with handle from inside in az 110 f can be deadly, or during a crash or fire

In cold weather (anything below approximately 30f) all instrument panel indicator lights light up, the speedometer and tachometer needles drop to zero, as do the fuel and engine temperature gauges. the reverse assist indicator lights in the tailgate also light up. there is a clicking sound in the dashboard. the engine continues to run, but the abs service required instrument panel indicator light does stay lit up. this is an everyday occurrence in cold weather, and starts happening 10-12 minutes after starting the engine. the vehicle needs to be brought to a full stop and the engine turned off and then on again before it stops happening. until stopping and restarting, it just keeps on occurring. a quick search of the internet reveals that this is a common problem with various year models of the jeep grand cherokee. the chrysler dealership simply pleads ignorance after charging me several hundred dollars to 'fix' a loose connection under the driver's seat. an electrical problem of this nature poses a definite electrical fire hazard. do we need to wait for that before taking action or can we be proactive?

Driving home from work (55-65 mph) me head light went off, they then proceeded to blink on and off. from time to time the head lights still blink off and on but it is impossible for me to recreate this situation. the dash lights still continue to blink off and on all the time. chrysler will not acknowedge a problem and i know of three other vehicles this happens to as well. i have never had anyone find anything wrong with vehicle (so i have been told)

When i start and as i'm driving the truck the headlights are flickering along with the radio. the rpm and speedometer gauges are jumping up and down as i drive. i can hear a cluster of clicking noises coming from behind the radio, underneath the steering wheel in the wiring harness's and also from underneath the hood in the fuze box closet to the driver. the heated seats do not work along with the radio and gps, the turning signals and the fog lights do not work when this is going on. the dealer has no idea what's wrong with the car, i have already changed the battery, alternator, and starter. this seams to be an ongoing problem with this truck and its a serious safety hazard.

I bought my 2005 jeep grand cherokee in april 2010 so i have had it for 5 months. in that 5 months the driver side rear door handle has completly broken and fallen into the door, the passenger side rear door has craked and will be completly broken soon, the passenger front door handle is just beginning to crack so the only one that really works 100% is the driver door handle. i have an extended bumper to bumper warranty that we purchased and were told the only thing it didn't cover was the dvd player...well they lied! about a month after we bought the jeep while driving the ac would shut off and everything on the dash would start to blink on and off and then suddenly stop, i took it in and all they said was we could not get it to do it again. we recently had the rear differentials repaired due to them going out, they actually covered that under the warranty. the only other issue is sometimes while stopped at a stoplight and idle the jeep will seem like it wants to die but never does. i only have 56000 miles on my car and have owned it 5 short months and have had all of these issues, my main concern is the door handles because not only can my 3 kids not get out if there is an emergency, but where the plastic has cracked it has sharp edges and they could easily cut their hands. something needs to be done before that happens! what is it going to take, an injured child?????

2005 jeep grand cherokee has had continuous electrical problems with engine light coming on and stalling since it had about 9000 miles on it and was bought new. dealership has looked at it several times and could not every find anyting wrong with it and usually clears out failure and problems occur shortly after again. after the vehicle stranded me a week ago and once again the service department found nothing wrong-replaced the battery, the vehicle is stalling more than ever and almost had a serious accident that could have been fatal beacuse the power went out driving on the interstate with power steering gone and came close to getting hit by a tractor trailor. was able to throw into neutral and restart, but this is not a safe condition. the area on interstate was in a construction zone and it seems the problem typically occurs when decellerating below 30 mph.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. my right front directional stays on all the time. even when key is off. i took the bulbs out so battery would not go dead. i am driving without the front right directional. called dealer, they tell me the front control module is out of warranty, and if i buy one from ebay at $50 it may not work and has to be programmed at dealer. they are going to give me a discount price to repair of $603. i told them to order the part over a week ago, and today they told me it is on back order and they will call me when it comes in. is this a common problem, and if so shouldn't they have a part some where to repair it? thank you for your help. *tr

I parked my vehicle in a driveway and took the key out of the ignition. i opened the rear passenger door and put my son in the backseat. the vehicle gearshift lever was pushed out of park and into reverse with my 3 year old son in the vehicle. the vehicle rolled backwards 20 feet and crashed into a truck. if the truck wasn't there it would have rolled even further into the pond. i'm just hoping this doesn't happen to anyone else, it could've killed someone. i am contacting my dealership to try to get the issue resolved. according to the owner's manual the brake transmission interlock system failed on my vehicle. you should not be able to move the gear shift lever in the p (park) position when the ignition switch is in the lock position. to move the gear selector lever out of the p (park) position, the ignition switch must be turned to the on position, and the brake pedal must be depressed. *tr

As i drive my 2005 jeep grand cherokee( hemi)the vehicle simply shuts off. all the lights on the dashboard turn on then the car turns off. i end up with no control. sometimes this happens and then the vehicle turns on all by itself while im driving. about a week after i purchased it, i had this problem but the dealer said it was fine. as i took it to the gas station across the street, it happened. the dealership employees witnessed it and were nice enough to run over and pushed the vehicle back to the shop. they said they couldn't find anything but replaced the battery just in case. since then it happens at once every two months. currently, i have an airbag issue. the dealer cannot seem to repair any of these issues. the airbag lights turn on indicated the airbags are off because it does not sense anyone on the seats. it has been to the dealership 3 times for this issue and i am waiting for a call back to return it so they can install an ecm. they think it may be the issue. this will be the fourth visit for the airbags. seems the vehicle has a lot of electrical problems. i have not driven the vehicle since december 22nd. it is now feb 25. i am afraid of going over the warranty miles. *tr

Safety recall 2005 jeep grand cherokee/transmission fluid leak. vehicle shakes violently/shudders on highway &when speeding up/ slowing down. jeep serviced on 5 separate occasions for recall over 36 months. repaired incorrectly on 1st visit to dealer service. brought in 4 subsequent times/approx. every 10,000 mi- to fix same issue transmission/ failed torque converter/shudder. dealer argued no recall of this item, despite having nhtsa recall info/my vin was noted on recall. dealer refused to waive $100 powertrain warranty fee each time jeep brought back. dealer insisted mopar parts have 9,000 mi warranty/ i would pay for repair b/c i drove 10,000 mi since previous repair. dealer refused to provide rental car despite 5-7 day s to repair. recall states a loaner vehicle to be provided if scheduled repair would take >1+days. a local 5 star jeep/chrysler dealership refused to service jeep after their initial recall repair failed at 10,000 miles. i was told to take jeep back to dealership i leased it from. dealership manager told me it was not his problem to fix & 5 star jeep name did not mean anything to him. said he was not concerned about recall. i brought jeep to the leasing dealership- they refuted claims of a recall & told me to pay for all repairs & loaner car. it wasn't until 4th&5th time jeep was in for service that a loaner car was provided because i told dealer i was pursuing ohio lemon law. the last time i brought jeep in for service of this recall item, i was told to go on a drive with serviceman to verify problem. he told me it was torque converter & not to fix it b/c he didn't think there would be a fires from leak. i showed him nhtsa recall. he said i would pay for mopar parts b/c they were out of warranty @ 12,000 miles. i told him i had 10,000 miles since last service. he spoke to manager & they serviced jeep. jeep is again shuddering/clunking. *tr

I bought the jeep cherokee laredo in june 2005 and i have experienced several events with the instrument panel lighting system and gauges. the panel goes on and off until the engine and / or air conditions shut off. at one point the battery needed to be replaced. it has been very stressful having this condition occurring while driving or at a traffic light. both dealer and chrysler have improvised some repairs (6 times) that had not resolved the problem. i have decided to file legal action against the dealer and chrysler after seeing in the nhtsa complaint database that this is a widespread and systemic problem with this model. if you want to join the effort to pursue actions using the lemon or any applicable law request a complaint research of this complaint record to have access to my phone and e-mail address. having a joint effort will result in louder and more effective results to defend our rights as consumers. *tr

Since 4/24/07, my 2005 jeep grand cherokee will intermittently fail to start. this typically has happened after driving it throughout the day without incident. (only once did it happen early in the morning after sitting all night.) for the first two failures, jumping the battery was successful. the third incident, where the jump didn't work, led to the battery being replaced, although the old battery was never diagnosed as faulty. when the car failed to start with the new battery, the keys were re-coded by a jeep dealer. it then failed to start with the newly coded keys. the ignition was eliminated as a problem, and the starter was replaced (with an after-market product). when the car failed to start again, the starter was replaced a second time (with a chrysler part) and the ignition once again was diagnosed as working. after the next failure to start, a temperature sensor in the transmission was replaced. when the car again failed to start, i was told the newly replaced temperature sensor was faulty, it was being replaced, and the car would be ready the next day. now, three days after being told the car would be ready,i'm told that no one knows what the problem is, although the diagnostics now indicate there is a problem. i was told by the current jeep dealer servicing it that no one could be consulted at chrysler until the problem could be replicated. (although it is a timely process, the problem has been replicated while in repair.) it is now august 3, 2007, and for the last 102 days my grand cherokee has been in and out of repair for weeks at a time. when i have had access to it, i have not been able to drive it with any confidence. the dealer (not a jeep dealer) where i purchased this car has been loaning me vehicles and they have been exceptional in their concern, despite anyone's ability to resolve this. their daily attention my faulty vehicle is the only reason, as a first-time jeep grand cherokee owner, that i have been able to stay on the road today. *tr

Vehicle transmission has always made strange clunking noises. vehicle began to drop out of gear while driving and then finally (and currently) will completely shut off while driving. this has happened on numerous occasions and dealership says that they cannot duplicate the problem. a customer service manager did tell me that jeep is aware of the problem and this is a common problem among v8 models such as mine but that they just do not know how to fix it so they have not yet issued a recall. however, jeep is putting so many people at risk of an accident. not only the vehicle drive but everyone else on the road around the vehicle. the vehicle now shuts off while in motion driving on a fairly regular basis but with no consistent pattern. $34,000 dollars worth of worry. *jb

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee that has 2 specific problems that i have taken to the dealership numerous times with no resolution. jeep claims they do not know what the problem is and/or can not duplicate the problem to fix. no error codes etc however if someone would just read the jeep forums they will see this is a nationwide issue that is very dangerous with hundreds of near miss accidents. her first issue with my jeep is when coming to a stop or sitting idle with the car in drive the engine just shuts off. of the 8 to 10 times this has happen, twice the car did not want to start up again. we had to give the car about 5 mins and then it started right up. dealer found some random error codes that we were told had nothing to do with the issue we were having. at the third time we too the jeep to the dealer they changed a senor and replaced the transmission filter and fluid. the problem continued and on the fourth trip to dealership they updated the software per jeep in detroit. still not fixed and the dealer ship is telling me there is nothing they can do. issue continues to happen. after the dealer ship installed the new software, the second issue started. this issue is the most dangerous and will result in a lawsuit if not fixed. when driving at really any normal speed the car will act as if i the driver am hitting the brakes really hard. not hard enough to lock the wheels but hard enough to leave a seat belt redness on my neck from being slug forward. when this happens the red brake like and yellow abs light comes on. the issue happens for about 3 seconds and the car just regroups and keeps going. we have lost count of this issue buy my guess is this has happened about 15 times. on the last 3-5 times when the car locks up it turns off the radio when in the past this did not happen. issue seems to be adding more problems as time goes on. jeep needs to read the forums. *nm

On 9/1/06 while on vacation driving in stop and go traffic on california freeway, vehicle lost brakes and steering while vehicle in motion. i was able to pull off to side of freeway. turned car off and restarted and took to closest dealership. they hooked up to computer and found 3 error codes that they did no recognize. because of holiday weekend no one was available to look at the car until tuesday 9/5/06. this left me with extra expense because i had to rent a car for the duration of my vacation and had to stay an extra day for car. dealership contacted chrysler and they instructed them to reprogram computer and drive and re-test. no error codes reappeared and gave me my car back. while driving back home from california on 9/5/06 car engine shut off while at stop light. again had to turn off to get restarted. took into local dealership in hometown next day and they could not find anything wrong after having car for a day. again on 9/18/06 while driving out of parking structure, car engine again shut off. luckily, i did not hit anyone or anything. taking back to dealership again. *jb

I leased a 2005 jeep cherokee in june of 05. while traveling on i-69 to indianapolis in august of 05 my jeep shut off for no apparent reason. i called the dealership and told them of the situation. they told me if it happened again to let them know. everything was fine until june of 06 when we were again travel on i-69 and the vehicle shut off again. i called the dealership again and they took the vehicle in for service but could find nothing wrong with it. we got the vehicle back and three weeks later my husband was driving alone on i-69 and the vehicle again shut off almost causing an accident. i called the dealership and they have had it for about three weeks with various people driving it with an auto-pilot hooked up to it, but nothing has happened. so i now have a vehicle that i do not feel safe driving with my 16 month old in the car for fear that it will just shut off and cause an accident. something needs to be done about this problem before someone gets seriously hurt.*jb

While driving, all of the gauges will suddenly turn-off (including gas gauge, speedometer, odometer, temperature, and tachometer.) when this happens, the turn signals also stop working, as well as the headlights and dashboard lights. this has happened multiple times, and one time while driving at night. the car has been in the shop five times for the above stated problems (currently still in the shop). supposedly on the fourth visit, the dealership replaced the cluster panel. however, this obviously did not resolve the problem as within two hours after picking up the problems happened again. *jb

I am writing to correct the details of my complaint posted on your web site. i spoke with someone on the phone yesterday and the entry posted is inaccurate. my husband was driving my 3 month old 2005 jeep grand cherokee on october 24th (not the 17th) when the engine stalled without warning. he was driving in the left lane of a busy highway during rush hour in the rain. he was able to restart the vehicle after reaching the shoulder of the road. he then stopped at a service station but they could not diagnose the problem. i called the service department at the dealership and was told to tell my husband to drive with the defrost on to keep the engine idle up. i then made a service appointment and asked to have the oil changed at the same time. they kept the truck overnight and said that the diagnostic tests did not reveal any problem and they were unable to duplicate the incident. i was also told that they discovered a milky substance when changing the oil and put in a new filter. they did not say that this was the problem. they told me that if it happened again, i should bring it back. my issue is that waiting for a vehicle to stall at high speed on a busy highway is a real safety concern. my husband and i are reluctant to drive the vehicle and actually rented a car to visit our son who is almost 250 miles away at college. i hope you will correct the entry as it is important for other owners who are experiencing the same problem to have the actual facts.*jb

Transmission: i have a 05 jeep cherokee that has continuously had a transmission shudder problem. while driving, the transmission shudders, feels sluggish, jerking the vehicle forward and backward. it happens while traveling at various speeds, but it is excessive while at the 40 mph & 1500 rpm range. the first time it was taken to the dealership, they did a transmission flush and told me to pick it up. the second time, they ordered, then later replaced the drive line. the third time to dealership, the service technician said they reprogrammed the transmission. it has now been dropped off for the same problem 4 times, and still no remedy. i called the dealership again and told them about a possible recall i read about on the nhtsa website on the problem i was having. the public information specifically suggests a remedy, replace the torque converter (which has not been tried on my vehicle). i asked them why they couldn't use that information to fix my vehicle since it is still under warranty rather than wait to see if a recall is even issued, and i was told that the engineers are working on a remedy for the possible recall i was reading about, and it may not affect my vehicle. so, until that recall is issued, nothing can be done. air conditioner:on 9/22/05, while vehicle in motion, air conditioner, radio, &all dash lights went off at same time, stayed off for 5 seconds or so, then came back on. 5 miles or so later, the same thing happened again. later on the same day, the air conditioner would only work on the highest setting. on my way to the service appointment the next day, the air conditioner would come on and turn off itself, like it has an electrical short in it or the dash. i can also smell plastic burning/melting but can not locate where it is coming from. dealership now states that parts are not available to fix the air conditioner, and they do not have any timeline for parts availability. no clue why the dash lights shut down. *jb

I leased a 2005 grand cherokee lardo (v8) on june 30, 2005. during the first 1.5 months the vehicle has stalled out loosing complete power on 5 seperate occasions. june 24th - pulling out of my driveway june 26th - backing out of my driveway august 20th - pulling out of my driveway august 21st - while traveling 70mph on the expressway (us-23) while traveling 50mph on us-24 when the vehicle stalls it would loose complete power (dash board lights, radio, and yes power steering). after the two expressway incidents i immediately took it back to the dealership where after looking at it they told me they were aware of this problem, but did not know what was causing it or how to fix it so i could pick up the vehicle that afternoon. they also told me they had a few of their own mechanics experience this same problem, but it just went away. i ended up going through several different managers before speakign with the dealership general manager. the following day (the second day they had the vehicle in the garage they told me they gave me wrong information and this has hever happened before....they were aware of 2004 grand cherokees having a starting problem not a stalling out while driving problem. they said they would not give me a new vehicle or terminate my lease when i requested it since i feel this car is unsafe for my wife to drive with my child. they have now sent it home with a mechanic so he can drive it back and forth to work to see if it happens again. they have not repaired or replaced any parts.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee that i've owned 2 years and have put 28,000 miles on it and my battery is dead. not realizing what a pain it would be to get a new battery i thought oh well. well upon contacting every auto place and multiple dealerships within a 25 mile radius i found out that no one carries this mopar/chrsyler battery. it has to be special ordered and to top it off it goes for between 120-150 and this is the only choice for this suv. per the dealerships the battery does come with a 72 month warranty at least. so i call chrysler to see if they will prorate the battery being i've only the jeep 2 years and it's only 3 years old. well of course they say no. when you purchase one of their cars the battery is only warranted for 36 months or 36,000 miles but if i go buy the exact same battery now they will warranty it for 72 months. to me this does not sound accurate but they refuse to help in anyway. they said there is absolutely nothing they can do. i am not asking for something for free but i believe the battery should be prorated. *tr

Was driving on interstate 70 mph, light lit up, i couldn't accelerate, my car immediately slowed down, i barely managed to coast over to the side of road while dodging traffic. immediately put the car in park, shut the car off, turned car back on, put into drive, wouldn't budge. made the noise as if i was in neutral while pressing on accelerator. i shut the car off, pulled out the manual, read i could experience loss of power, not to drive the car, report immediately to be repaired. i called the 24 towing number, had the jeep towed to the dealership. when i received call from the dealership on april 10, i was told this issue was related to the recall problem that i had repaired in february. after further conversation on tuesday with the service department at the dealership i was given explanation that when i brought the vehicle in for the recall in february 2006, there was already damage done to the vehicle, they had to flush the engine. the power outage i experienced on the interstate was related to the recall, and in addition, they had to flush my engine again and replace a valve in the transmission. when i expressed that i wasn't comfortable driving the vehicle which such safety issues, the service man also agreed it was a safety factor. i was on the phone with chrysler yesterday, and was told that once this problem occurs a 3rd time, i can then go to arbitration, and take the next step, but that step wasn't clear. after expressing my desire to get out of my lease because of the safety concerns, i was told they couldn't do that. the 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo is my 3rd jeep i have driven, no prior vehicle has had problems. at this point, i am supposed to go and pick up my vehicle even though i am not comfortable driving it, in the hopes the next time my power shuts down, i am alive to tell about it. and when that day comes, chrysler can then take the next step in pursuing further action. *nm

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. several times since i bought it in march the engine has suddenly stopped while i was driving. when i stop the car and put it in neutral, the engine will immediately restart. the dealer has not been able to find why this is happening. this is far more than a nuisance. should it happen, for example, while i'm passing another car, it could result in a crash. i have talked to jeep about this and they claim this condition is impossible. however the dealer told me that his regional manager has experience the same problem with his 2005 jeep. however i have discovered the source of the problem. the key and ignition switch have been mounted on the steering column. should the driver inadvertently bump the key with his/her leg, you can stop the car. i have confirmed this condition and reported it to the dealer. he mentioned that the regional manager also susp-ected this was the case. i am a normal sized male, 165 pounds, 5' 11. it should not be possible to stop the car in the manner i am describing. it has happened to me several times since i took delivery of the vehicle. i believe this is a condition that is dangerous and needs to be pursued by daimler- chrysler asap. gary street registered professional engineer

While driving on a busy streetwith my 2 children in the car, i had to stop @ a red light and when the light turned green, i proceeded to go but couldn't and realized that the car had shut off. i tried to restart the car in a hurry due to oncoming traffic but was unable to. finally i find the hazard lights and put them on to let people know that my vehicle was stalled. i had to take the key completeley out and put it back in to restart the vehicle. i could've had an accident. took the car in and left it there for 3 days and the dealership stated that there was nothing wrong with my car and to take it home. so i did. i went out of town that weekend and the same thing happened with the exception of the vehicle was actually in motion when it shut off for the second time on a another busy street. i quickly turned on the hazard lights and once again had to restart the vehicle. as i was making my way back into to town, the check engine light came on and i took the car back to the dealership for another 3 days all for them to say that they reprogrammed the transmission and engine computers and that should resolve the problem. but it didn't... it shut off again about a week later right after i dropped my kids off at school. this is ridiculous and is a safety hazard. i took it back again, keep in mind this is the third time...this time they changed out the ignition cylinder after 4 days. i have only had it back now for 4 days and once again the car shut off at a light on a busy street. so the people at the dealership will be seeing me again!!! this is dangerous and very inconvienent for me and my family.

I am the owner of a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo. on more than 10 occasions since i have purchased the vehicle i have inadvertently shut of the engine by hitting the key with my knee while driving at highway speeds. i believe this is due to the placement of the ignition directly above the driver's knee. to date i have been able to maintain control of the vehicle and get it restarted before an accident occurred. however, without power steering if i had been on a curve i doubt i would have been able to maintain control of the vehicle. i have been in touch with daimler chrysler via email in an attempt to resolve this situation to no avail. this may be unique to me but i consider it to be a serious safety condition that needs to be rectified. i have asked them to allow me to terminate my lease without success. at this point there is no alternative but to ask that an investigation be initiated to determine whether my concern is an individual problem or a serious safety defect. thank you for you prompt attention to this matter. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving or in park the vehicle was turned off when the contact's knee touched the key. even when the seat was moved farther back the problem still occurred. the key contains the remote keypad on it, which makes the key larger and easy to be hit. the ignition is located on the dashboard. the dealership replaced the ignition cylinder in an attempt to prevent the problem from occurring without success. updated 03/22/06

When ignition key is in place with the 2005 grand cherokee laredo running, it is possible to bump the lower edge of the key with the driver's knee. *ts ***no answer required*** the consumer stated the remedy would be to raise the ignition switch or make the key smaller. *jb

Dt: the car was a rental car. the driver rented it last week. the contact was driving on interstate in the right lane and driver's knee hit the key and the car shut off. the driver lost power steering, and had to come to a stop in the middle of the highway. the driver had the same problem again on an off ramp. the car shut off and he lost power steering, had to coast to a stop again. the local chyrsler dealership advised that there was a government mandate that requires that the key be located on the dashboard. the owner contacted rental company upon return, and made a complaint. the driver wanted others to know. the vin number not listed because the contact was not the owner, this was a rental car. *ak

I have a 2005 grand cherokee laredo under 3000 miles. my engine light has come on less than 10 times ,and my car has stalled when come to stop light or complete stop about 5 times. i have made 5 trips to the dealer and the first few times they could not find anything wrong with it. then they determined it was related to the remote start which they had installed. i got it back and they said it was fixed and it stalled out when i pulled into my driveway that very day. engine light came on again exactly 1 week later. engine light is still on now. this will be my 7th trip to the dealer for this problem. i would also like to say that i have also hit the key in the ignition twice which made the car shut off and my car has also revved up with the brake on just as the other complaints on this site. i am also only getting 12 miles per gallon!*ak

Bought a 2005 jeep grand cherokee in late october. have had numerous instances on engine shutting down while driving, including on a busy expressway. neither chrysler nor the dealer was able to correct the problem (the dealer's service department was in contact with chrysler techical support when trying to repair). they tried a couple of repairs suggested by chrysler that did not resolve the problem. finally realized i was gently bumping the ignitiion key or attached keys when going from the accelerator to the brake and the switch was moving to accessory from on and killing the engine. the two positions are very close together. have talked to two people at the dealership who have had this happen with either a jeep or pacifica. to me this is a serious safety concern that could get someone injured or killed if in traffic. i removed all other keys and even the ring from the ignition key to try to prevent this from happening. with this information, the dealer has agreed to replace the ignitiion cylinder; i asked that they check the other grand cherokees to see if it's a common problem several days ago, but they have not yet responded. to me as an engineer, there are two problems: the ignition switch is very low on the dashboard where the key can easily be hit, and the two positions on the switch are very close together, making this problem easy to occur. if there is the slightest weakness in the spring in the ignition, this is even more likely.*ak

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - STARTER ASSEMBLY
05/13/20065002002/09/2005
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 35 mph through an intersection on normal road conditions, the engine stalled and could not be restarted. there were no warning lights prior to the incident. the vehicle was towed to the dealership, who diagnosed a fuel pump and fuel injection pump failure, both were replaced. after this incident, the vehicle presented transmission problems. the contact noticed a loss of power while driving 65 mph on a highway. intermittently, the transmission made noise when shifted to second gear. the vehicle had been taken to the dealership 20 times, however no error codes identified the defect. in one of the incidents, the yellow malfunction light illuminated and the dealership identified the defect as the computer control module and the driver shaft, both were replaced, however the transmission problem persisted. the dealership determined the vehicle could not be repaired. the manufacturer was contacted who recommended to take the vehicle to a different dealership. *ak the vehicle was not downshifting when going up hills and it would get stuck in second or third gear. the a/c and blower motor were inoperative, the dealer could not duplicate the consumers concern. the key became stuck in the ignition. all the dashboard lights were flashing, the cd player was broke. the brakes and rotors vibrated. the starter was replaced. the driveshaft and heater were replaced. the seats would not move back. the seat belts did not retract as they should. updated 01/17/07. *jb updated

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the air conditioner would only function properly when on a high setting. the repair shop stated that the wire harness for the blower motor was melting and causing the failure. the dealer stated that a new blower and wire harness was needed. the current and failure mileages were 32,600.

Dt*: the contact stated in april 2006, the vehicle accelerated on its own nearly causing an accident. the service dealer determined the computer system that runs the transmission was the problem. the computer issue allowed the transmission to leak improperly. also, in october 2006 the vehicle stalled at 30 mph due to all the electric in the vehicle failing.

It all started with the seats not staying in there settings(driver 1 driver 2. then the auto dimming rear mirrors would go dark at any time. the rain sensor wipers stopped working. the car would accelerate on it own. even when in park, then the seats started moving to driver 1 then 2 as i was driving it. the jeep also has a bad odor in it. it is at the dealer as i speak, the jeep is not safe to drive. fog light go on and off at any time as i was driving the jeep to the dealer the jeep started the speed up on it own the car hit 68 mph in a 45 mph zone , so as you would thing a state trooper pull me over, he ask me why it took me so long to pull over, so i told him the problems with the car, will the look he gave me ! then right in front of him as the car was in park the instrument panel lit up like a xmas tree and the car started to accelerate all by it self, will i did not get a ticket and he follow me to the dealer. *nm

Drivers side window on 2005 jeep grand cherokee on first occasion, may 2007 came out of power window track, wedged between mirror and door frame and the pressure resulted in spider cracked throughout window. this is a hazard due to potential window exploding onto driver while in transit. also inability to close window during inclement weather could result in traffic crash. initial repair resulted in window motor also needing to be replaced, motor warranted by chrysler, but labor was charge to customer. second occasion september 16,2007, same drivers side door window came out of power window track and wedged between mirror and door frame. this time window did not crack, however, chrysler dealer would not cover under warranty, charging customer. story chrysler jeep, advised window track parts to repair the molding was back ordered for 3 weeks. dealership glued old track molding into place so it would not slip out of place causing this power window issue.  We leased a 2005 jeep cherokee in january 2005 and in january 2006 everything on the dashboard started to cut off including turn signals, odometer... and everything on the dash including the cd player, the buttons for the heater/ac would overheat and the car began to smoke for no apparent reason. we took it in to galeana, the local dealership and they could not find a problem, which apparently seems to happen quite often with chyrsler automobiles. shortly after the car began to break down everywhere. if i parked the car at a store, work, home... and went back to start it, it would not crank. this happens 8 out of 10 times and the vehicle has been taken to the dealership 5 times and they could not duplicate a problem and now they tell me they can't do anything for me. shortly after that at the end of 2006, as i was driving down the highway a pebble as the dealership calls it, went through my grill and hit the transmission coolant, spraying transmission fluid everywhere almost catching on fire with me and my two small children in it. we took it to the dealership and apparently the transmission was blown out, $4,000 dollars to replace. all of our other problems still exists and chrysler does not want to fix the problems or let us out of the lease. i have tried talking to chrysler and getting this issue resolved only to hear them telling me that this was not their problem. this is becoming a trend in their business and if they cannot fix the vehicles they manufactured they should not be making the vehicles in the first place. *jb
