When turning the ignition key to the start position, you hear 1 click but the vehicle does not start. this is an intermittent event that seems to come and go every few months. when it happens, i have to leave the key in the on position for about 1 - 2 minutes, then attempt to start the engine again. i had previously had my vehicle serviced at the dealership for this problem, but since it is so random, the service personnel could not recreate the event. i even advised them that other owners, registering this same complaint, pointed to corroded solenoid wires as being the culprit. however, the service department had me purchase a new battery last year. this did not fix the condition which continues periodically to this very day. unfortunately, the car has been unable to start at a few times when the surroundings were less than totally safe. i have viewed a number of consumer forums, such as http://autoforum.classifieds1000.com/jeep-grand_cherokee/2005_jeep_gc_not_starting?pg=10. all of these owners have the exact issue but each time, when presented with the details of the occurrences, dealerships disavow all knowledge that this condition exists. many consumers are being told by the dealerships that no other owners have complained about this.

Sometimes when i drive the engine feels like it stalls out and my rpm's don't move, all the boxes around prnd light up and the check engine light comes on. i have to pull over and put the car in park or sometimes i have to turn it off. once this is done the car continues to drive like nothing happened but the check engine light will stay on for a day. sometimes it happens on the highway which is very scary to just drop speed down to 40. i have read many blogs about this issue. it happens at random times.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has been stalling when at slow speeds. when i come to the end of my driveway, when i stop at a red light, in parking lots and slowing down on the highways the truck begins slowing down and shuts down completely. when i put it in park and restart it has been starting back up. i researched on the internet and saw there were recalls for jeeps stalling, however when i called the dealership, bradshaw jeep in oakville ct and i was told that my jeep was not included in the recall and i would need to pay for anything they would need to work on in the truck if grand cherokees were recalled for stalling and i'm now calling to say mine is stalling, it is odd to me that they respond my jeep is not part of the same problem/recall. it's doing the same thing. in the past week alone my truck has stalled three times, monday while i was coming towards a traffic light slowing down to turn, last night pulling into my driveway and this morning stopping at a main intersection during rush hour traffic, the truck behind me almost drove into me, we were lucky it went to the side of the road. we are afraid to drive the jeep at this point. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and the car started to stall sporadically. at first it just started when i stopped at the lamp posts or stop signs, after it started to stall sporadically anytime. i looked up on the internet and found that jeep already recalled several grand cherokees because of the front control module issue. i called jeep line and they told me that i should take it to the service as it could be a recall issue. i took my jeep to the service (john hoffer, topeka, ks) on 2/22/2010 when they changed some pump and they said it is fixed; it was not and the car died on me 3 times, i took back the car to the service and they told called me that i have a front control module issue and we need to change it. i called jeep right away gave them my vin and they told me that yes it was a recall issue about this module, but they are sorry my vehicle is not in the recalled ones and i have to pay the 1200 usd to change the module. my questions: who is responsible this safety issue as the vehicle could stop in the middle of the highway? if jeep recalled several thousands of vehicles about the same issue how could they say that it i not their problem? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact noticed a massive hesitation with his vehicle. the vehicle would not start and the dealer was notified. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop and a new starter was installed. after the repair was performed, the check engine indicator illuminated. he went through a drive-thru car wash and noticed that the vehicle began to hesitate. when he placed extra pressure on the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would stutter and then finally catch and increase in speed. the dealer performed a tune-up, but the failure persisted. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but they could not pinpoint the cause of the failure. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was 57,802 and failure mileage was approximately 57,400. updated 03-04-09 *bf the consumer stated a code for the o2 sensor heater was being displayed. the engine light is still on. updated 03/04/09 *jb

 1. my 2005 jeep grand cherokee unexpectedly can stall, typically when the vehicle is moving at less than 15-20 mph. unfortunately, no warnings are given by the vehicle as the engine simply stalls and dies. no computer error codes are displayed or registered. the stalling occurs both in forward and reverse. often the stalling occurs when the engine seems to either down shift or up shift in lower gears. the stalling is a safety issue as the unexpected and unpredictable stalling often occurs at stop lights/intersections or parking lots. the problem appears to me to be a coupling between the computer controller/software, the rpm sensor, and the transmission gear box. 2. the failure is intermittent and unpredictable. when the computer fails to catch the rpms fall rapidly and the engine stalls and dies. consequence is that the vehicle can stop suddenly in the middle of an intersection or parking lot. the failures have occurred multiple times. 3. despite several computer flashes and maintenance on the solenoid-linear iacv, jeep has failed to resolve the problem. chrysler-jeep gives the run-around. the dealer says that they can help anymore; the regional manager doesn't recognize it as a safety issue; corporate chrysler-jeep doesn't see it as an issue. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 limited. purchased car ... 2nd owner... with 21k on the odometer. car constantly stalled... i had one spell where just about everytime i stopped the car stalled. how dangerous and crazy is this? i brought the car under warranty and jeep kept trying to fix it. 2 weeks later issue would be back. after 5 dealer visits now the car has only stalled twice in the last 3k miles. still its ridiculous. daimler chrylser needs to step up and figure this out now b4 more people get hurt. *tr

When slowing down approaching a hard stop, my 2005 jeep grand cherokee ltd shuts off. this happens about once every six weeks. the dealer cannot figure out why it does this. i've narrowly avoided going over a hill, drifting back into cars behind me while stopping up a hill, and almost causing an accident in rush hour traffic. the dealer said unless the computer registers a code, there is no way they can fix. they refuse to send this up to the district manager for referral to chyrsler hq. i see on the internet there are numerous models encountering this issue. *tr

The stalling problem was originally reported to the dealers technicians at 9,007 miles. it occurred intermittently while coasting or braking. they could not reproduce the problem, indicating [no codes] stored; could not duplicate condition on the repair form, and sent it home with me. knowing there was nothing they would do until a stall could be deliberately demonstrated, i continued to drive it until september, when the stalling became more frequent than the normal every-2-month average and nearly caused an accident due to the unexpected loss of power steering and brakes. i again asked them to track down the problem and repair it. they finally decided to attach their co-pilot computer which monitors the jeep's systems and have me drive it for a while. if it stalled, i was to press a button to capture the previous and future 30 seconds of vehicle activity. on two occasions while the co-pilot was attached, a stall occurred. i pressed the co-pilot trigger to capture the data both times. when they got the jeep back, they said there was something indicating the engine stopped running on two occasions. chrysler recommended they replace the egr valve and the purge solenoid, which they did. this morning it stalled again. i updated chrysler and the dealer about the incident. the service manager told me that chrysler's engineers have instructed them to perform no service - no replacements and no troubleshooting - on my jeep until a mechanic can demonstrate another engine stall. please note the following thread on jeepforum.com. i submitted this thread's information to the dealer tech's, but i cannot tell how much good it did. my jeep still stalls and chrysler still has no fix for it. this thread calls out commanders and grand cherokees, from 2005 through 2008. this is an extremely serious and wide spread problem, and it has recall written all over it. this problem needs attention and it needs it now. http://jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=253493. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee(4.7) with 58,000 miles overheated and stalled as i was pulling a small cargo trailer. the jeep is equipped with a transmission cooler and up until this incident i've had no overheating problems. when i popped the hood there was coolant every where. the jeep was towed to service garage and was diagnosed with a failed water pump. the day i picked up my fixed jeep i noticed a strange sound coming from the engine ... i took the jeep back to my service garage and they told me my a/c compressor was failing and upon checking with the local parts supplier, my mechanic told me he could not buy a replacement compressor ... i must go to a jeep dealer. i did and was told there was a national back order and i would have to wait at least 3 weeks for a replacement. keep in mind the engine has one belt, so at any time the compressor could freeze up and i would not be able to drive the vehicle once the belt broke. i did a lot of phone calling and found a compressor in illinois .. it was delivered and installed for $550.00. so, within a week i spent over $900.00 for repairs. the jeep was a dealer demo, so i was out of warranty even though i bought the jeep with less than 1,000 miles on it. *tr

This is the second complaint i have filed concerning this problem. this is a continual issue that, if left uncorrected, will eventually cause an accident. my 2005 jeep grand cherokee (4.7l at) stalls or nearly stalls while coming to a stop, or accelerating from a stop. the last reported incident occurred while approaching a stoplight. since that initial complaint, i have spent 19 hours over 3 visits to the dealer trying to identify the problem. after replacing a solenoid in the throttle assembly, the condition seemed to improve, but has since regressed to pre-repair status. i have received no feedback concerning my original complaint from nhtsa, nor have i been notified by daimler-chrysler of any developments in correcting this problem. relying on dc's initiative to determine the cause and necessary repair for this issue seems irresponsible since they haven't done so in the two years that my model has been on the street. also, if it were not for the personal initiative of the mechanic that replaced the solenoid, i wouldn't have received any help with my problem. the dealer position was that there was no computer registered event, so therefore, the stalling had not occurred. when they could personally observe the event, and capture it in the vehicle computer, they would investigate further to see if any repair was warranted. the survey below asks about property damage, deaths, and fires. do i need to actually have one of these events occur to my family to flag my complaint for appropriate action? knowing a vehicle stalls while braking and accelerating at highway speeds and not aggressively determining the cause until a fatal accident occurs seems irresponsible. hopefully, i do not hear about this inevitable recall the same way my firestone patron pal did. (from the tow truck operator, post-accident). please contact me with the status of this problem as well as instructions of how to get my vehicle repaired correctly. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee has engine failure when there is a rapid decline in engine rpm. most often when getting off of the freeway and coasting to an intersection, or when making a turn in an intersection and lifting off the gas pedal. engine dies and the vehicle shuts down causing a loss in power steering and all power. this causes vehicle to not be under control and veer into undesired lanes, curbs, and various locations due to having sudden loss of power steering and engine power. *tr

Since 4/24/07, my 2005 jeep grand cherokee will intermittently fail to start. this typically has happened after driving it throughout the day without incident. (only once did it happen early in the morning after sitting all night.) for the first two failures, jumping the battery was successful. the third incident, where the jump didn't work, led to the battery being replaced, although the old battery was never diagnosed as faulty. when the car failed to start with the new battery, the keys were re-coded by a jeep dealer. it then failed to start with the newly coded keys. the ignition was eliminated as a problem, and the starter was replaced (with an after-market product). when the car failed to start again, the starter was replaced a second time (with a chrysler part) and the ignition once again was diagnosed as working. after the next failure to start, a temperature sensor in the transmission was replaced. when the car again failed to start, i was told the newly replaced temperature sensor was faulty, it was being replaced, and the car would be ready the next day. now, three days after being told the car would be ready,i'm told that no one knows what the problem is, although the diagnostics now indicate there is a problem. i was told by the current jeep dealer servicing it that no one could be consulted at chrysler until the problem could be replicated. (although it is a timely process, the problem has been replicated while in repair.) it is now august 3, 2007, and for the last 102 days my grand cherokee has been in and out of repair for weeks at a time. when i have had access to it, i have not been able to drive it with any confidence. the dealer (not a jeep dealer) where i purchased this car has been loaning me vehicles and they have been exceptional in their concern, despite anyone's ability to resolve this. their daily attention my faulty vehicle is the only reason, as a first-time jeep grand cherokee owner, that i have been able to stay on the road today. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee purchased brand new. vehicle stalls while making sharp left turn (1st occurrence). this left me with no control of the vehicle. in march of 2006, vehicle stalled while making same left turn. took vehicle to dealer for diagnosis and repair. dealer could not find a problem and was told to bring it back if it happens again. on 11/14/06, vehicle stalled while driving straight. again i had no control of vehicle. returned to dealer, vehicle was inspected by mechanic and regional manager. called by service manager and was told vehicle will not duplicate problem, come and pick up vehicle, car rental will not be covered at this point. told him i will not pick it up until something is done to correct this problem. i am very uncomfortable putting my family in this car, it's too unpredictable. i was then told it's out of his hands, it's a manufacture problem. contact chrysler direct. i have contacted chrysler and filed a formal complaint. i was given a reference number and was told i would be contacted in 3 business days. i realized this was right around thanksgiving holiday and a lot of people are on vacation. the following week i contacted chrysler and was told my file is with the dealer and they should be contacting me to arrange an exit strategy . my husband was present when the service manager called the regional manager via cell and overheard the regional manager state he knows nothing of the problem. he was then reminded that he inspected the vehicle in person on 11/17/06. the regional mangers comment was then oh, that car, it's still there? he then proceeded to say this is just a case of buyers remorse, they are just trying to get out of the vehicle. i am still waiting on a response from someone. *jb

Dt: the consumer owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee which stalled after only being driven 450 miles. the stalling only occurred after cold starts or when the vehicle has not been driven for a long period of time. this occurred at reduced speeds when the consumer applied brake pressure. the engine would simply shut off. the vehicle will immediately restart on the first try. afterwards, the vehicle will run fine with no other problems. this has happened at least six to eight times. the consumer has taken the vehicle to the dealer three times. the dealer was unable to duplicate the problem and offered no explanation as to why this problem occurs. the dealer did perform a diagnostics test which produced no fault codes or failures. the last visit to the dealer did prompt a replacement of the crank shaft sensor, but the dealer did not say why this correction was necessary. since the replacement of the crank shaft sensor the vehicle has not stalled. however, there was a slight miss in the engine when brake pressure was applied. the consumer planned to contact the jeep manufacturer at this time. *ak *mr

Transmission: i have a 05 jeep cherokee that has continuously had a transmission shudder problem. while driving, the transmission shudders, feels sluggish, jerking the vehicle forward and backward. it happens while traveling at various speeds, but it is excessive while at the 40 mph & 1500 rpm range. the first time it was taken to the dealership, they did a transmission flush and told me to pick it up. the second time, they ordered, then later replaced the drive line. the third time to dealership, the service technician said they reprogrammed the transmission. it has now been dropped off for the same problem 4 times, and still no remedy. i called the dealership again and told them about a possible recall i read about on the nhtsa website on the problem i was having. the public information specifically suggests a remedy, replace the torque converter (which has not been tried on my vehicle). i asked them why they couldn't use that information to fix my vehicle since it is still under warranty rather than wait to see if a recall is even issued, and i was told that the engineers are working on a remedy for the possible recall i was reading about, and it may not affect my vehicle. so, until that recall is issued, nothing can be done. air conditioner:on 9/22/05, while vehicle in motion, air conditioner, radio, &all dash lights went off at same time, stayed off for 5 seconds or so, then came back on. 5 miles or so later, the same thing happened again. later on the same day, the air conditioner would only work on the highest setting. on my way to the service appointment the next day, the air conditioner would come on and turn off itself, like it has an electrical short in it or the dash. i can also smell plastic burning/melting but can not locate where it is coming from. dealership now states that parts are not available to fix the air conditioner, and they do not have any timeline for parts availability. no clue why the dash lights shut down. *jb

Oil changed routinely around 3000 miles. cold morning -3 fahrenheit. let car warm up for 5-10 minutes. drove 5 miles to work. when stopped at a light on the way to work i could smell hot oil. i thought it was the car in front of me. after i parked in the car i noticed a large amount of smoke coming from my hood. i immediately popped the hood to see what was going on. there were approximately 3 inch tall flames on the exhaust manifold for about 6 inches along the manifold. since the engine was off the flames died out and did not ignite the car. the valve cover gasket had failed and was leaking oil out on the exhaust manifold. dealer thought the pcv valve might have had moisture in it and froze. this caused excess pressure to build and popped the valve cover gasket the weakest point. dealer replaced valve cover, valve cover gasket, and pcv valve. failure again: exactly 2 weeks after the first failure. same scenario, it was 3 degrees this time and i let the car warm up for less than a minute. this time though there was no fire. dealer tore deeper into the engine and found the oil had sludged up. i had just changed my oil a month ago and 1000 miles previous. the sludge caused moisture to be trapped in the pcv valve and freeze. the sludge also was found in every component the oil lubricates. when i asked the dealer what i can do to prevent this from happening again they told me to change my oil as recommended. i already do that. they suggested that since i first saw this failure at 35000 miles, i should have my engine torn apart every 35000 miles to have the sludge removed. they told me they have seen the sludging problem before and chrysler is aware of it. chrysler will not cover the sludge clean up once it is out of warranty at 36000 miles.

2005 jeep engine light comes on periodically, they have not been able to tell me what is wrong with it. i had the car inspected while the light was on, it passed the safety inspection, but not emmisions.the rapid oil cchange center didn't know what the emission problem was, they told me i ihad to take it to the dealer. i made appointmnet with dealer,, i drop car off, the darn light is off!!!! the dealer say they cannot help me, my lease is up in two months, and that i have 6 days left on the emmision warrenty and there is nothing they can do unless the light is on.... i know that light will come back on the 7th day. i have documentation the light was on because the inspection wouldn't clear a few days back......i want the warrenty extended. *tr
