The interior door handles are breaking off as a result of weak material, this problem is widespread for jeep owners throughout the us, and abroad, this is a major safety concern for potential victims of a crash, or even worse a fire or a water evacuation as it is next to impossible to safely exit the vehicle without the support of an operational door handle.. there is most certainly other complaints regarding this issue, the edmunds forum has an extensive complaint list for this issue, and it's not just the 05 models.. the dealerships are offering a fix for $700 per door, please look into this problem before someone is killed as a result if no has died already. this is in regards to 05-08 models of the jeep grand cherokee interior door handles

2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handle broke
08/01/201185000
2005 jeep grand cherokee limited - car is a good condition except for 3 of the 4 doors have handles casings that are cracked and the door handle is hanging off. the car is well maintained and garage kept. this started happening in the last year and has spread rapidly. all 3 doors have done it the same place and it has started with a crack and then grown into the pieces falling off and leaving the inner workings of the door fully exposed. the is a grave safety issue and a recall needs to be issued.

Door panels are broken such that door cannot be opened from inside
07/23/2011
I have an 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited and all 4 enterior door handles started with hairline cracks that have advanced into major cracks and pieces of the plastic missing where the enterior door handle is located. recently, 2 days ago- the back passenger handle completely came off and now is inoperable. there is no way to exit the vehicle from the inside of that affected door. i am certain that all my door handles will eventually follow suit and i will have no operable doors in the vehicle. this is a safety issue and should be addressed as such. this is not cosmetic. all 4 enterior door handle panels need to be replaced. the door handles are not secure and will continue to crumble until they are not usable anymore. since this is a known issue- when is jeep going to start replacing their broken manufactured parts?
05/01/2011
My vehicle has 40,000 miles, emaculate condition except for the door handles and their structures around them. the drivers door is barley exitable. sometimes i have to roll the window down to get out.(how imbaressing, to be a top of the line, showroom quality; still ; vehicle). we bought it new in november 2004. have been so happy with it until 2 months ago. the passenger and rear passenger handles are cracked as well. please help me, i'm just sick about it.

Good afternoon. within the past 24 months, all 4 of my door handles (interior) have had hair line cracks that have developed into full breaks on the door handles causing safety concerns for myself and my children should we be in an emergency and be unable to get out of the car. i had purchased an extended warranty on my jeep (7 years or 70,000.00) miles and when i had taken it in to our authorized dealer, they informed me that it was not covered. i have received a quote to fix this and was informed that they need to replace the entire door panel as the handle itself is not a part in itself, which will cost over $2000.00 for parts and labor. my vehicle is in excellent shape except for this.
06/27/201056000
All 4 door handles have broken apart from the door panel, and after a quick google search and looking at nhtsa website, it is a very common problem. would be incredibly unsafe if you needed to exit the vehicle in a hurry

Normal door use, door handles cracking then breaking. worried about safety. unable to exit door in an emergency. would have to be let out. nothing done to repair. three out of the four are broken. jeep will not recall or repair. only way to exit vehicle is to be let out from exterior.

All interior door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited are broken or cracked. this is a safety hazard in case of a fire the backseat occupants would not be able to exit the vehicle. there are thousands of other cherokee owners voicing this same complaint on youtube. jeep says its regular wear and tear and charges close to $600.00 per door for a new panel to fix this problem. this should be a recall!

When opening my doors the door handles started developing cracks and eventually cracked into several peices and the handles are no longer attached to the door. calls and a visit to a dealer left me with the only option to replace the entire interior door at over $200.

2005 jeed grand cherokee failure of interior door latch handles due to cracked plastic door panel which prevents operation of the door from the interior. this has occurred on 3 of 4 doors with the 4th door possibly failing in the near future. this is a severe safey issue preventing occupants from exiting the vehicle in an emergency. there are numerous reports on the internet. although, internet reports are frequently unreliable, there are hundreds of postings discussing this condition. further, at least one report indicates that chrysler has agreed to replace the door panels for a $50 co-pay; but my contact with chrysler was not successful. this is a serious issue that merits consideration for a recall.

There is a potentially serious safety issue concerning the interior door handles of the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. apparently the plastic holding these door handles has a tendency to crack and break, causing the door handles to be inoperable from the inside of the vehicle. the door handle is only supported by the molded plastic of the entire plastic door panel, and not the metal frame of the door itself. there has been no blow or abnormal use to cause this problem, just the normal opening of the doors with the inside door handle. this condition has affected all 4 of our doors, with the handle itself completely missing (falling down inside the door) on the left rear passenger door. at this point, the handle on the right rear passenger door is not missing, but it is inoperable (nothing for the handle to pull against because it is cracked on the inside), and both front doors have cracks but are operational at this point. it is obvious that chrysler-jeep needs to resolve the problem before someone dies in a fire or accident, having gotten trapped inside the vehicle. we bought this vehicle new from the dealer, but the dealer has indicated there is no recall and it will cost ~$600 each to replace the entire door panels to fix the current problem. he also indicated that even with the new door panels, the problem may happen again. this is not acceptable!!! must someone die to bring this serious problem to light.

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and my door handles are breaking off on the inside. i do not have children so they are not abused in any way. the material is a cheap plastic and the handles are barely hanging on both front driver and passenger doors. this is a safety hazard that needs to be addressed. i have also seen several other complaints on youtube from other jeep owners with same situation. i also work for aaa roadside and have seen several instances where they have to be towed for electrical fires. this makes me very nervous and this matter needs to be addressed. there are also videos on youtube with jeep fires as well to back it up. any kind of recall would be greatly appreciated as these two scenarios are a serious and life threatning combination. thanks

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and my door handles are breaking off on the inside. i do not have children so they are not abused in any way. the material is a cheap plastic and the handles are barely hanging on both front driver and passenger doors. this is a safety hazard that needs to be addressed. i have also seen several other complaints on youtube from other jeep owners with same situation. i also work for aaa roadside and have seen several instances where they have to be towed for electrical fires. this makes me very nervous and this matter needs to be addressed. there are also videos on youtube with jeep fires as well to back it up. any kind of recall would be greatly appreciated as these two scenarios are a serious and life threatning combination. thanks

Door panel just behind front door latches cracks and obstructs latch movement, thereby impeding door operation. even after plastic fully cracks, latch sometimes catches on pieces. could be hazardous if immediate exit of vehicle was necessary.

Unsure of the specific incident date. the failure is the plastic molding around the inside door handle for 3 out of 4 doors. the plastic has broken, exposing the inside mechanics and allowing for the handled to extend further than necessary. this makes exit questionable as the door handle is only holding on to the latch without any place for leverage. in the event of an accident/emergency, if the door was to be involved it is possible the handle would suffer further damage and be unable to operate. there has been nothing done about replacing the part. it costs roughly $700 per door to repair.

2005 jeep grand cherokee - interior door handles broken all of the interior door handles on my vehicle have broken. apparently the only available fix is to replace the entire door panel assembly. i have solicited quotations for each panel, and the lowest offered price has been $750/panel. based upon the fact that 4 of 4 handles have broken in the same manner, i believe it sound to conclude the handle suffers from a hidden vice or defect. luckily, i live in a state that allows recovery for breach of the warranty against redhibition. however, i can only imagine the disappointment and anger for like consumers who have no recourse to address this defect. please do the right thing and persuade the manufacture to remedy via recall.

2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handle trim completely shatters for no apparent reason. door handles are inoperative from inside the vehicle. every door handle has this same issue. chrysler-jeep officially denies any culpability, but will give a discount off of the $2,500 repair bill, so consumers must pay $1,000 for the manufacturing defect. even extended warranties will not cover the issue. i hope to god no one ever desperately needs to get out of one of these death traps in an emergency.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has broken door handles. the dealer wants $750 in order to fix the part. it is a safety concern for my children in the back seat who will not be able to get out of the car if there was an accident. this just occured in the last month. i will fix the piece on my own dime but it seems kind of outrageous for a door handle. if not for my kids i would skip it and just suffer with the broken door handle.

I currently own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and approximately september of last year i observed the front passenger interior door housing to be cracked and loose. i was bewildered how this happened. in april of this year my seven year old daughter was in the rear seat behind the driver seat. i stopped the vehicle and exited. i was waiting for my daughter to come out and she began to bang on the glass in a panic. i opened the door from the outside and she was crying and told me she couldnt get out that the interior handle was broken. i looked at the handle and discovered the housing to be completely broken apart like the front passenger one, but the rear handle was just dagling and is inoperable. it was at this time i began to research this issue to see if it is a problem with other jeep owners. sure enough it is a problem with hundreds of jeep owners, and my research should that there are 65 complaints filed under latches/locks/linkages; 29 complaints under structure: body: door; and 10 complaints under latches /locks/linkages:door:latch, not counting other site complaints when you conduct a google search. i went to a local jeep dealer who informed me that my warranty is up and they do not have any knowledge of any recalls. i am concerned as if two handles are broke, it is a matter of time the other two will also break. i also find this to be a serious!!!, safety issue as if there is an emergency, how will a child exit my rear seat if they are sitting behind the driver and if the handle breaks on the otherside there is no getting out from within the vehicle. this of course can result in the death of a passenger. i hope your agency can assist me with this problem in getting these handles replaced before the unthinkable happens. thank you in advance

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact was unable to exit the vehicle from the front driver side because the door handle was fractured. in order for the contact to exit the vehicle, the contact had to roll down the front driver side window and open the door by using the exterior door handle. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the failure and current mileages were unknown.

2005 jeep grand cherokee - all 4 plastic door handles have broken off - plastic falling apart and into inside of door - the only way to get out is to open from the outside. very dangerous if you are unable to get out of vehicle - i have tried to gorilla glue them back together and they just keep crumbling.

2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles inoperable from the inside of the vehicle. the 2 back door handles have fallen off. we took this up with chrysler and was told this is not under warranty. this is a quality/design flaw and a huge safety issue. chrysler needs to recognize this and re-call and fix this issue. we then took our jeep into a dealer to get it fixed and paid $736 for one door panel. the only panel that could be fixed since the rest are on back order ??? we are left with 2 doors that don't operate and one cracked door handle that eventually will fall off too. please help address this concern with the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. thank you

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. i just hit 50,000 miles, and it is sporadic at best that i have passengers in the rear. i have kept my vehicle in immaculate condition. however, both of my rear door handles are completely broken. i have to open the doors from the outside. my front two door handles are cracked with pieces missing but still operational for the moment, but i'm sure it's only a matter of time. if i were in an accident and rendered unconscious my rear passengers have no way of exiting the vehicle in case of fire or other event would require a quick exit. this is absolutely a safety hazard due to a manufacturer defect.

2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles inoperable from the inside of the vehicle. the 2 back door handles have fallen off. we took this up with chrysler and was told this is not under warranty. this is a quality/design flaw and a huge safety issue. chrysler needs to recognize this and re-call and fix this issue. we then took our jeep into a dealer to get it fixed and paid $736 for one door panel. the only panel that could be fixed since the rest are on back order ??? we are left with 2 doors that don't operate and one cracked door handle that eventually will fall off too. please help address this concern with the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. thank you

The door panels on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited are breaking, and beginning to fall apart. i'm afraid if myself and family was hit in the door in an accident, pieces from the door could hurt one of us. i have talked with chryler about this problem, but they turned us down. said they would need to have more info from more people. chrysler just doesnt want to stand behind there product. i have a case # 20756604 case manager is named shawn xt 66071. i hope you can help with this problem.

The inside door handles do not function due to bad plastic that holds them in place and this will not allow me or my passangers to exit the vehicle incase of a fire or accident. it started out as a small crack and now they all are breaking off.

In my 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited i began to notice the plastic that the door handle was connected by began to crack, within a few weeks the entire door handle was no longer working leaving me to have to open the window to open the door from the outside. this is a vehicle safety issue, due to a supplier's defective plastic resin mix, not a warranty issue. in case of a crash or fire, a passenger or driver might not be able to get out of the vehicle and could be trapped in and could die, my passenger side is also hanging very loosely and soon will not work as well. the door handle is not a separate part as in most vehicles so the entire door handle must be replace. the dealer charges more than 800 dollars to fix a door piece, and the part will just be replaced with another door panel with the exact same plastic that will break eventually again.

I have had my 2005 jeep grand cherokee for 3 years. one year ago, i got a crack in the plastic around the drivers side door handle. then 6 months ago, the front passenger door handle cracked. last month, the rear passenger door handle broke off while a friend was trying to exit. the door handles are slowly breaking off at the plastic around the door handle.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited (5.7l): interior plastic holding door handles has been cracked for quite some time and now they are broken. i am the sole owner of the vehicle (i'm single, no kids) and my rear door handles have rarely ever been used, yet they are completely broken now. apparently this is a very common trend among these 2005-2008 jeep models and this is a serious safety issue as rear passengers are unable to exit the vehicle from the inside. the steps to repair a simple door handle and crack requires the entire panel to be replaced, at $400+ each. these dealer replacement parts are on national back-order due to the extreme amount of cases with this.
04/01/201168000
Driver's door latch is loose because of the plastic part is broke off, and it can come off anytime. other two doors have cracks around the latches, starting to have the same problem. there is not thing can be done except replace the parts which is very expensive. this is the defective issue with the plastic that surrounded the door latches. it is a safety issue.

Theres is a defect in the plastic used to make the door panels on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the plastic around the door handle latches is breaking apart and crumbling. all 4 doors are having the same issue of the plastic failling. if the plastic continues to break apart the door handle will fail and you will not be able to open the door. this is safety issue which could prevent myself or passengers from exititing vehicle in case of an emergency. dealership was contacted and informed of the defect. dealership stated there was no recall and they had not come across said problem before. i informed them that it was obvious defect since all the doors were degrading at the same time. dealership stated that my only option was to buy new door panels for $2600. my research shows that this is not an isolated inicident and there have been many complaints of the defect door panels. this is a serious safety issue and chrystler needs to recall the door panels on this model.

Jeep grand cherokee interior door panel broke & door will not open from inside the vehicle causing a safety hazzard. this is the 2nd door handle that has broken in the vehicle. in searching to fix the back door, i found an article showing that chrysler was aware of a resin problem with this vehiicle. i can find a safety recall for the locks.

2 out of 4 interior door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee have broken & are subsequently rendered useless. this is a hazard if there were to be a crash & individuals inside needed to get out. there is also cracking in the door handle on the driver's door which could lead to a more severe case of being trapped. at this point & through my searches online it seems that this is a greatly occurring issue & needs to be dealt with on the manufacturer level. there has been nothing done as of yet to replace the parts as i feel it is a malfunction of the vehicle & not normal wear & tear. the estimated cost to replace each door panel with a similarly cheap quality product is $800. i would like to file this complaint in hopes of creating a large list of owners with similar issues so that chrysler/jeep takes responsibility for their shoddy prioduct & officiates a recall.

Plastic panels that hold the door handles are cracking and breaking, causing the door handles not to work. after the door panels break we cannot open the doors from inside the car. at this point we have one door completely inoperable, one with plastic broken and missing, and two where the cracking has started.

Door handles faling off due to a suppliers defective plastic resin mix. in case of a fire or crash a passanger or driver might not be able to get out of the vehicle and die from this defect. this is a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited.

All interior door panels on the 2005 jeep grand cherokee have cracked and, in some cases, broke apart around the door handle. i have had three repaired at a dealership at personal cost and one is pending. i believe it is a defect in the plastic resin manufacturing process for the early 2005 grand cherokees because all four door panels have cracked in the exact same place. chrysler was contacted on numerous occasions and denies that this is an issue. this is a potential safety issue because if the door handle breaks loose, you cannot open the door to exit the vehicle from the inside. this exact issue has been documented several times by other grand cherokee owners and all of them have had similar results with chrysler's denial of an issue.

3 out of 4 door handles have developed cracks on the plastic door panel in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee. one of the doors is no longer operational without rolling down the window and pulling the outside door handle. this is clearly a design defect from faulty plastic attachments. if there was an accident the passenger may not be able to quickly exit the vehicle, especially if the electric windows no longer functioned. chrysler needs to fix this.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited hemi engine, door panel cracks leaving handles broken off in rear, two front door handles show signs of severe cracks, loose. contacted local dealer who said they would cover a portion of the replacement, no recalls were issued etc..this vehicle on occasion has children as passengers and i would think chrysler would be concerned for the safety of passengers with door handles that are broken. it appears that the material that these parts are made of are very low quality and i am shocked that the manufacture has not stepped up to the plate and paid for the replacement. after what i have read on blogs and on line about the same complaint from other jeep owners, this makes me consider not buying another chrysler product in the future.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited has 68k miles and 2 out of the 4 interior door handles are broken. the other 2 that aren't broken are cracked and could possibly break anytime. i am fearful that in the event that something were to happen to the battery in the vehicle during an accident, my two children in the rear seats will not be able to get out. my vehicle is 6 years old but has very little miles on it and the handles shouldn't have broken so easily. there has been no abuse to the handles at all. there is no aftermarket repairs available for this vehicle that i can find and the only remedy is to purchase new door panels. like everyone else in the usa, i don't have the money to replace something like that, that shouldn't have broken in the first place.

My 2005 jeep grand cheerokee interior door handles have all broken loose from their door panels making them inoperable. i have inquired about any assistance from the manufacturer since the problem seems to have been caused by faulty material and really poor design. the answer has been negative. i am concerned that in an emergency it would be imposiible to exit the vehicle if i were not able to get the windows down to use the exterior handle.i feel a recall is definitly in order since the price to replace these panels is exorbitant ( $700.00 to $800.00 each) and no assistance is being offered through the manufacturer. there are multiple cases in your file regarding this issue and a huge amount of documentation from customers on the internet!!! please help all of us rectify this dangerous situation. please don't wait until an injury or death is reportedthat was caused by this problem !!

I am the owner of a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and all but one of the door handles on the inside panel have fallen out and it is just a matter of time before the other one does because it is already cracking. this is a real safety issue as if anything happens the doors cannot be opened from the inside. i have read that this is real common because of the material used to make these doors and has happened to a whole lot of people. the dealerships want like $700 a door to replace.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and the inside door panels are a hard plastic one piece door panel. the plastic that is behind the door handles is broken and cracked and i am very much concerned about the safety of being able to exit the vehicle in an emergency or even during normal circumstances. i have been told that jeep refused to do a recall and the replacements are very expensive. my vehicle only has 61,000 miles and again this is something that is wide spread in this model with other owners and a recall should be done.

One of the door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited has broken off and is unusable. the other three are cracking and i am fearful that they will be breaking off soon. the handles and the supporting door frames are all cracking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the manufacturer has been unwilling to even discuss the issue. the dealer states it is $680 per door to fix. parts to fix the door handles are unavailable for sale outside the dealerships. due to the safety issue of being unable to exit the back seat area from the inside, i am fearfull to allow anyone to ride in the back seat at this time. if an accident were to occur, they could be unable to exit the car from the inside. there are numerous complaints posted as well as a website where hundreds of people are stating the same exact issue with their 2005 jeep. there was not any outside circumstances that caused this defect. the dealer states it is

The inside door handle on my jeep has broken off and it's almost impossible to open the door from the inside. i've read many complaints about online and it's only a matter of time before all 4 door handles break. i'm very concerned that in the event of an accident, i, my wife, or kids, won't be able to exit the vehicle. if this is not an isolated incident i think chrysler should replace all these defective door panels before it turns into a toyota gas pedal situation.

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. i have read over 500 complaints about the obvious manufacturer's defect associated with the interior door release systems contained in this vehicle. i must assume that we are waiting for a number of deaths before this evident flaw will be recalled. i am now down to one working door on my grand cherokee. other than that, my jeep is in great condition, for i am very particular about maintaining my vehicle properly. after hundreds of jeep grand cherokee owners have submitted official complaints, wouldn't it be safe to say that these complaint represent thousands, if not tens of thousands of incidents? let's face it... most vehicle owners will live with this, or pay to have it repaired, but few actually submit a written complaint. i have been quoted a price of $700 per door to have these door release systems replaced. as a single mother, i don't happen to have an extra $2,800 to pay for something that should be taken care of by the manufacturer. one day... heaven forbid... someone (hopefully not a child) will be trapped inside a jeep grand cherokee during an emergency. only then, i assume, will a recall be issued. what a shame. this particular vehicle has been on the road for six years, and complaints are rolling in. this is horrible and extremely dangerous. please investigate!!!

Bad plastic resin compound was used to manufacture 2005 jeep grand cherokee in several batches of door panels, used to hold door handles. the plastic cracks, crumbles, and disintegrates around the door handle after only a few (3-5) years of use. many door handles are no longer usable. this creates a fire safety issue and a crash safety issue, because vehicle occupants cannot use the door handle to escape from the vehicle. the door handle may have been intact before a crash, but due to the weak plastic be inoperable after a crash by further cracking and crumbling. numerous video's and pictures have surfaced in the public showing this problem, and chrysler/jeep is not owning up to their problem, and their supplier's problem. consumers are faced with a $2,400.00 repair bill or designing their own solutions (at the peril of the public)!!! here are some example videos and comments on dealing with jeep dealers and corporate on this issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsfrz7cibky and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3zgrqrrmca and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bycj4pndkko and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4fiofrfxgg i was in a car accident on 07/18/2010 and could not open my door because of this problem. i had to roll down my window, and reach outside and use the exterior door handle, because the interior handle was disconnected and would not work. chrysler jeep refuses to acknowledge this vehicle safety defect despite hundreds of complaints. only when threatened with legal action or a class action law suit do they respond. the nhtsa must step in to address this as a safety recall.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited automobiles have cracking and crumbling plastic surrounding the door handles. in case of fire or crash, you would not be able to open the door to get out of a deadly situation, due to cracking and crumbling plastic that was used in the door panels and hold the door handle. in many cases 2 inch large holes are next to the door handles due to plastic failure, and in some cases the entire door handle is no longer connected to plastic and is inoperable. this appears to be the result of a bad mix of plastic compounds, and/or improper pressures/temperatues in injection molding, during the original door panel manufacturing. chrysler has supplier recovery options to pay for this repair/replacement, but will not allow it unless excessive pressure is put upon them, instead pushing consumers to pay for the $2200.00 repair on their own.

The interior door handles of my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are breaking, rendering them inoperable. i have attached a video link detailing the problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsfrz7cibky i have contacted the dealer where i purchased the vehicle. since my vechile is out of warranty, it will cost me $700.00 per door. i did not cause the damage. the problem stems from weak plastics. i contacted the corporate office to express my concern and inquire if a recall has been issued. the representative i spoke with stated they had not heard of this problem and there is no planned recall. this is a real problem and should be address! i have spoke with numerous owners and repair shops, they have seen this problem with the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. what if i was in a life treating situation and needed to get out of my vehicle? however i can not because my handle is broken. i don't have children, but what if they are in a similar situation and can't get out? it really concerns me that a tragedy must happen before chrysler will fix the problem. i do hope someone will investigate this and force a recall. thanks, richard markham north carolina

The interior door handles have broken off or are about to break off in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited hemi. there is a common manufacturers material defect, as the door handle pocket is made out a brittle plastic that shatters under normal use. this is dangerous because in an emergency, one would not be able to exit the vehicle because the interior dorr handle does not work. you have to open the power window and open the door from the outside, obviously this is unacceptable and needs to be addressed by chrysler/jeep.

2005 jeep grand cherokee plastice surrounding the driver side door handle cracked and fell apart. it was taken apart and glued back together. this lasted a short while and it then broke again. it is not an easy fix. the whole door panel for $600 dollars must be replaced. at times the window must be rolled down to open the door using the outside handle.in case of an electrical failure in an accident you would not be able to exit the vehicle.this is definitely a safety issue. many jeeps have had all 4 door handles break. this is poor construction. chrysler needs to step up and recall and fix this issue and not by replacing it with more cheap plastic.

Interior door handles are broken. this is very dangerous because you cannot get out of the car - especially in an emergency. the rear door handles have been very rarely used, and still have broken. this is definitely a mfg defect that they are avoiding. very dangerous and unacceptable that they (jeep) are not recognizing this issue.

2005 jeep grand cherokee, plastic door panel and handle assembly is cracked and or broken behind where the pull handle is. jeep refuses to fix this issue without chaging over 3k for parts and labor. failure on drive and passenger door @ 50k miles. handles are now just floating in door cavity. serious basic safety issue. please make them fix this via recall.

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. the handle on the rear passenger door broke from the door panel. this is a huge safety concern because a person sitting in the rear seat could not exit the vehicle. i was forced to replace the door panel because of this safety concern. the driver and passenger door panels are now cracked around the handles and it is only a matter of time before they break completely. i will then be forced to replace those door panels as well. i don't feel that i should have to pay for the replacement of these door panels because chrysler designed them poorly. occupants in the vehicle should not be trapped inside the vehicle in the event of an emergency. apparently, this is not an isolated incident. it has been a problem for numerous people that own this same vehicle. this should definitely be considered a recall and chrysler should be responsible!!!!!!

17jan11 -- door handle faulty -- i own a 2005 jeep gran cherokee that two have cracked at the door handle. if they continue to fall apart the vehicle occupant will be trapped within the vehicle. i have contacted chrysler and they are not willing to fix or help with the $1,400.00 bill for just the two door panels. if the battery were to die you would be trapped in the vehicle, or if you were forced off of the road and ended up in a lake you could not get out. my friend has explained this to chrysler and they do not feel that it is a concern that they have to worry about. i explained that i would send pictures of the vehicle to show it is in excellent condition, and garage kept (no damage to the vehicle), adult driven. why did the other two panels crack, they have no answer.

Two of my interior door handles are just breaking off .
10/25/200958000
All interior door panels are cracked around the door hadles. three out of four door handles have snapped off and the very last one is hanging on by a thread. the handles seem to be attached to the actual door panel which is comprised of hard plastic. the design of the door panel and the handle being attached is bad and a safety issue if you can't exit the vehicle if your car dies and you have no power to open the windows. additionally, if you need to force the doors open from the inside due to a wreck, car on fire, panicing etc., 9x's out of ten you don't have handles and any weight or pressure to remaining handles if any while cause them to just snap off. my car smells of gas constantly and the light comes on to tell me to check the gas cap. i eventually replaced the gas cap after checking it all of the time and now the car jjust smells of gas and my check engine light comes on sometimes. i've had the car checked by mechanics and the jeep dealer to no resolve. the constant gas smells give me bad headaches as well as concern when i'm driving.

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited hemi , it only had 26,000 miles on it . all four of the interior door panels have now broke where the door handle is attached. the drivers door panel has broke the worst and the door handle is not even attached to the panel anymore , which has become a saftey concern. i have contacted my dealer and turned in a claim for customer complaints. after 3 or 4 weeks they contacted me to say it is out of warranty. that is precisely why i called them and explained my situation. surely they can do something to alleviate this situation , all four door panels is going to cost around $3,000 dollars.i have read numerous reports about this problem on several different sites on the internet. the whole interior panel is conected to where the door handel is situated. meaning you have to replace the whole door panel. please help, this is definitely a big defect and a costly one to us the consumer. any help to this matter or a fix to this situation would be hugely appreciated.

I own a 2005 jeep gran cherokee that three of the interior door panels have cracked at the door handle. if they continue to fall apart the vehicle occupant will be trapped within the vehicle. i have contacted chrysler and they are not willing to fix or help with the $1,644 bill for just the three door panels. i have explained that it is a safety issue, and the vehicle just turned 50,000 miles. if the battery were to die you would be trapped in the vehicle, or if you were forced off of the road and ended up in a lake you could not get out. i explained this to chrysler and they do not feel that it is a concern that they have to worry about. i explained that i would send pictures of the vehicle to show it is in excellent condition, and garage kept (no damage to the vehicle), adult driven. why did the other two panels crack, they have no answer.

Over the past year, both driver's side door panels on my 2005 grand cherokee (limited) have broken. pieces around the opening handle have snapped off. the front driver side door is still usable, but the rear driver side door handle is just hanging there. these were not damaged through abuse, instead just routine use. i have not contacted my dealer as i have seen on line that most people have been unsuccessful in getting their warranties to back their claim and i don't have a lot of faith in my local dealership to go out of their way for a warranty claim. hopefully the nhsta can make daimler / chrysler / jeep / fiat, whoever step up tp the plate and repair what has been pretty much proven to be a design flaw.

The casings behind the inside door latch began to gradually deteriorate until all four door casings cracked which resulted in difficulty exiting the vehicle. three of the four handles have broken off completely, rendering the doors useless.
09/15/201040000
The interior door handles, all 4, broke off, at almost the same time. there is a common manufacturers material defect, as the door handle pocket is made out a brittle plastic, and they just shattered, or cracked simply by using the interior door handle to exit the vehicle. this is dangerous because in an emergency, one would not be able to exit the vehicle if the door handle breaks off in your hand.

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the inside rear door handle has broken inside the door panel. this requires replacement of the door panel. now you can not exit the vehicle in case of an emergency. my extended warranty will not fix this nor will chrysler. the dealer said it will cost $700+ to repair. the panel which is not even available from chrysler! chrysler should be forced to recall the vehicle and replace the inside panels before someone dies.

On the drivers door, the plastic of the panel supporting the interior door handle has broken leaving the handle unmounted and useless. obviously, this is a safety hazard as it takes more time to egress the vehicle in an accident.

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. she attempted to exit the vehicle from the front drivers side door when the door handle fractured from the door panel. in order to exit the vehicle she had to do so using another door. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where she was advised to replace the entire door panel. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure has since recurred on each door handle in the vehicle. the vehicle was never repaired. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 80,000. sm.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited.both front and rear passenger door panels have broken and cracked.the pfront passenger door handle on the inside is now inoperable. it is now permanently inoperable on a vehicle with only 31,000 miles on it. so far the dealer claims no recalls are available and the price to replace is about 800 per door.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee door handles inside are breaking. they are plastic and seem to be cheaply made. they just start to crack and after a few months the whole handle is gone. jeep needs to issue a recall or look into this issue before someone cant get out of there vehicle in a emergency.

Re: 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited - interior door panels (where door handle is attached) are cracking and falling away resulting in the door handles no longer being attached to the door. this requires, at times, the door to be opened from outside the vehicle. chrysler will not replace as the vehicle is out of warranty. the dealership wants $700 + labor (per door) to repair something that is obviously a manufacturing/material defect and safety hazard.

Rear passenger door handle broke from door panel causing child to not be able to open door from inside. the handle is now dangling there from wire. the other doors are showing signs of spider cracks, eventually leading to breakage.

2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles are defective. passenger side door handle has completely broken due to the cheap plastic and the driver side door handle has almost failed as well. i am afraid that in an emergency, i and my passengers might not be able to exit the vehicle. i've been reading online and this appears to be a very common issue, but chrysler refuses to fix the doors. they want $700 plus to fix each door handle, but you can't even get one because they are on back order.

I have two 2005 jeep grand cherokees. all the inside door handles are cracking and some are completely destroyed to the point you can not open the door from the inside. which in the event of an accident, no one would be able to exit the vehicle. it's obviously a problem with the plastic being too thin/brittle. it's all over the internet and there are even youtube videos.

I am reporting a very big safety concern about 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited v8 hemi interior door handles as it is made of very cheap plastic and i have the four handles ripped off on my vehicle. the only way to open the doors are from outside. in case of emergency or if the car is damaged where i can not bring fown the windows i will be stuck inside the car. when i tried to order a replacement parts i found it is out of stock and backordered. it might take few months before i get it. this just show how big is the problem and how many cars are involved.

I bought my 2005 jeep grand cherokee in april 2010 so i have had it for 5 months. in that 5 months the driver side rear door handle has completly broken and fallen into the door, the passenger side rear door has craked and will be completly broken soon, the passenger front door handle is just beginning to crack so the only one that really works 100% is the driver door handle. i have an extended bumper to bumper warranty that we purchased and were told the only thing it didn't cover was the dvd player...well they lied! about a month after we bought the jeep while driving the ac would shut off and everything on the dash would start to blink on and off and then suddenly stop, i took it in and all they said was we could not get it to do it again. we recently had the rear differentials repaired due to them going out, they actually covered that under the warranty. the only other issue is sometimes while stopped at a stoplight and idle the jeep will seem like it wants to die but never does. i only have 56000 miles on my car and have owned it 5 short months and have had all of these issues, my main concern is the door handles because not only can my 3 kids not get out if there is an emergency, but where the plastic has cracked it has sharp edges and they could easily cut their hands. something needs to be done before that happens! what is it going to take, an injured child?????

I am reporting a very big safety concern about 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited v8 hemi interior door handles as it is made of very cheap plastic and i have the four handles ripped off on my vehicle. the only way to open the doors are from outside. in case of emergency or if the car is damaged where i can not bring fown the windows i will be stuck inside the car. when i tried to order a replacement parts i found it is out of stock and backordered. it might take few months before i get it. this just show how big is the problem and how many cars are involved.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited interior door handles. 3 of my 4 handles have broken off. jeep charges $700.00 to replace this. it is a joke, considering i have used the backseat door handles maybe 15 times since i have had it since 2007. i have never heard or seen door handles on any vehicle completely break off out of no where.

2005 jeep grand cherokee, 42275 miles, the door panels on the rear doors are broken at the door handles and the doors cannot be opened from the inside. additionally, both front door panels are cracked at the door handles and more than likely will break soon. have inquired with local body shop and new door panels are approximately $450 each and are of the same design.

The front and rear passenger side door handles have broken off the door panels. the person sitting in the back seat cannot open the door on that side. i've been told it will cost over $1000 to replace the panels. based on all of the similar complaints i've heard and read about, i think there should be a recall on this problem.

2005 jeep grand cherokee- inside door handle/panels. in 5yrs the door handles are already cracking and falling into pieces. the plastic used surrounding the actual handle is cheap. unreal to think now that this was ok'd. eventually there is no more handles, resulting with people stuck inside the vehicle. what's next...the motor for the windows goes out and then your really stuck or dead now??? i mean come on. chrysler make some new panels...fix your problem!

Two of the door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee have broken off and are unusable. the other two are cracking and i am fearful they will be breaking off soon. the handles and the supporting door frames are all craking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the manufacture has been unwilling to even discuss the issue. the dealer states it is $700 per door to fix. parts to fix the door handles are unavailable for sale outside the dealerships. due to the safety issue of being unable to exit the back seat area from the inside, i am unable to allow anyone to ride in the back seats at this time. if an accident were to occure, they would be unable to exit the car from the inside. there are numerous complaints posted as well as a website where hundreds of people are stating the same exact issue with their 2005 jeep. there was not any outside circumstance that caused this defect. the dealer states it is normal wear and tear. this is an unacceptable safety hazard. i hope you will address as a recall before someone is seriously injured because they cannot get out of the vehicle.

My jeep grand cherokee 2005 door handle broke with less than normal use. both front handle are broken. even one of the the backdoor handle is broken and people rarely seat in the back. my car has only 37,900 miles. the jeep dealer wants to charge $1000.00 per handle in puerto rico. this is not normal and in my opinion could leave to people being trap in the car in case of an accident.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited, and all of the interior door panels have cracked around the door handle release. my concern is that the poor construction or the door panels and the latch mechanism will cause occupants to be stuck inside when the door handles eventually fail. the vehicle only has 36000 miles, and is very well taken care of, and this poor quality construction is unacceptable.

All 4 interior door handle on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee have broken, two of which ar currently in-operable. chrysler has told me it is an isolated incident however every website i check has hundreds of complaints.

Interior door handle the drivers door has broken off behind the handle and the passenger front door is cracked. i feel its a safety issue as it seems to be a common complaint in which the doors becone totally inoperable, mine have not gotten that far, but i am handicapped and that would complicate my situation even more. it apperars to be very cheap plastic and the cost of repairing is written at $770. plus tax.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door panels (all 4 doors) have cracked/crumbled around the door handles making it impossible to open the doors from the inside. this is a very dangerouse safety hazard and should be addressed immediately. i have 75,000 miles on the vehicle, therefore it is not under standard warranty. the dealership said they could replace the entire panel on each door for about $500-$700 each.

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee that has 4 interior door handles broken. to get out of my car i have to roll down my window, open my door and then open the rest of the doors for my 3 kids. this is a scary situation in case i am involved in an accident and there is a fire. if my jeep turns off how am i supposed to roll down the electrical window and escape out of my car. our safety is in great danger becasue of defective door handles that are not even forced and break off so easily. another problem i have with my jeep is that when i start it and start driving, the electrical brake system light, the engine light, the abs light and some other light turn on. after the lights turn, the speedometer will no longer work, i can't see how many miles per hour i am driving. i have to turn of the jeep, restart it and that will make the speedometer work but the engine light will not go off. in a couple of occassions i have come to make a complete stop with the vehicle and all of a sudden it will turn off dead. i have to put the vehicle in park and restart it again.

3 of 4 door handles broken. stress from handle cable operations creates a crack. when the crack become a break the door becomes inoperable, and can not be opend from the inside of the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. there have been reports in edmunds car space on this problem since november 2007. this is saftey issue due to the fact the doors can not be opend from the inside incase of an emergency.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door panels and handles to open the doors are all broken. the dealership wants $600-700 per door to replace. this is a safety defect rendering the passengers unable to open up the doors. the chrysler corp should do a recall and fix this obvious and dangerous design/manufacturing issue. as a result of the broken door panels, the door handles will not properly open up the doors for both the front and rear passenger doors. if there is ever an accident and those doors are the only escape route, they will render the passengers trapped in the car.

Inside door handles to open the doors from the inside broke off. there is only one door handle left, the driver's side. i have already reported this to chrysler but they said i bought a used car 2005 jeep cherokee, as is. i bought the vehicle october 2008. the vehicle looked new, it only had 29,000 miles. the door handles broke along with the casing with no force what so ever. i told chysler that i have young grand children, that if an accident is to occur there is no way the children can get out of the vehicle. i live in brownsville, texas where the weather gets very hot in the summer. if ever one of my child gets in the vehicle and locks him/her self in, there is no way the child can get out. the temperatures in the summer sometimes reach 100 degrees. right now, the driver has to get out first and open the door for everyone else. my wife, front passenger side, lowers the window first and opens the door from the outside. even my wife, if by chance i turn off the motor get off the vehicle and walk away, there is no way my wife can get out of the vehicle. she can not reach the drivers handle or crossover the shift gear to get accross to get out of the vehicle. the vehicle motor needs to be running in order for the window's motor to work to lowere the window. i am just letting you know, maybe there are other owners with the same problem. i was told by a mechanic at an auto dealer chevolet that he saw a jeep just like mine with the same problem, the handles broken. i will be reporting this to my insurance allsate, for safety reasons in case an accident ever occurs. i read the article on the toyota recall, concerning farmers insurance where they have had a lot of complaints. *tr

Purchased vehicle on 7-31-06. upon test drive the door locks would nt lock or unlock when using door key (any dr in the car). the remote did work. salesman told us 2 bring it in if it cont'd. taken in 5 times since the 1st time in october 05', dealerships cannot dupt the issue. last dealership said that if he toggled switch about 10 times it happened, but that was just overheating the button & that is normal. problem is i work in a building w/a prkg garage & work all hrs. when i get into my car, 4 safety i lock the drs immed. there have been several occasions where i can't do that & have 2 wait 2 get the car moving over the 15mi an hour 2 lock the drs. next issue is the delayed engagement in the transmission going 2 rev or drv. the car has been in on 3 occasions for this item of which the dealership clears codes or cannot dupt the issue. this issue became a an issue in a construction zone at a rr track near our home. gates were down when i drove up & i was 3rd car back, the gates went up, 2 cars went through & i was almost at the tracks when the railroad arms started coming down again. i put on the brakes & shifted to reverse 2 back up & the delay nearly caused the rr arm 2 hit the car. i backed up just enough to clear the rr arm by less than 6 inches. the last item is the a/c. since late march of 06' we have been experiencing the a/c blowing cold, then the air turns 2 warm or hot air blowing from 3 sec 2 minutes of blowing humid air before the system will kick in again with cold air. this has been intermittently like the other 2 items above. 3 times into the dealerships & again it was stated they fixed it when it wasn't or it's 114 degrees out, it is going 2 blow warm air. using outside air will make the a/c blow warm air'. the incident date is hard since there are 3 issues so i put the day of purchase. the failures are also hard to calculate, but since these items happen intermittently & or everyday (a/c) i counted 3 mo worth. *nm
