Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles equipped with 3.7l engines and nag1 automatic transmissions, the air conditioner evaporator condensate water may enter the transmission at the fill tube grommet seal. this can result in shudder during torque converter clutch engagement.
Consequence SummaryIt can lead to increased transmission operating temperatures, boiling of the water, and a subsequent purging of transmission fluid into the engine compartment potentially resulting in an underhood fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the transmission for leakage at the fill tube grommet seal. if no leak is detected, a new fill tube grommet seal and water deflector shield will be installed, and proper alignment of the fill tube verified. if the presence of a leak is detected, the vehicle will be evaluated for shudder during torque converter engagement. if no shudder is detected, the transmission will be triple flushed, and new fill tube grommet seal and water deflector will be installed and proper alignment of the fill tube verified. if shudder is detected, the torque converter will be replaced, a new fill tube grommet seal and water deflector will be installed, and proper alignment of the fill tube verified. the recall began on october 31, 2005. owners may contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

This has happened a lot. while driving all the intrument lights will flash, causing the ac/heater to turn off and on, headlights to go off, and traction control to turn off. twice recently the vehicle has shifted itself into reverse with the gear selector still in drive. i have taken it to a shop and they went through the entire electrical system and could not find a source for this problem. all jeep owners i have talked with (over 30) have this exact same issue. this is extremely unsafe and jeep needs to be held responsible. *tr

Car made a whining noise at 35-45 m.p.h. bought new tires and alignment. it turned out to be the rear differential. it was rebuilt for $1200. one week later it made a higher pitched whine. a chrysler employee told me that beginning in 2005, chrysler outsourced for cheaper bearings, and they were defective. he said they are no longer made. a whole new diff and axles had to be installed for another $2800. it still whines at all speeds now. chrysler said live with it!', and expect it to fail repeatedly. the case had been set wrong at the factory as well. there are hundreds of these cases on-line,but chrysler refuses to acknowledge them. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee (first incident) while turning a corner at approximately 15-20mph revved up, would not shift, and prnd were all lit up on the dash, as well as the engine light came on. after a few starts the engine light has gone off. second incident, from dead stop at a light and accelerating, same issue. engine light goes off again. this has now occured 4 times within 2 months and is a safety hazard considering the fact that your speed drops down out of no where and can potentially cause a serious accidents, causing harm to car a drivers, especially behind you, them not being aware that you are suddenly about to drop speed without brake lights!

Sometimes when i drive the engine feels like it stalls out and my rpm's don't move, all the boxes around prnd light up and the check engine light comes on. i have to pull over and put the car in park or sometimes i have to turn it off. once this is done the car continues to drive like nothing happened but the check engine light will stay on for a day. sometimes it happens on the highway which is very scary to just drop speed down to 40. i have read many blogs about this issue. it happens at random times.

Purchased vehicle 8/9/08. at this time only problem we was you had to press clock button for radio to work. during 2008 we noticed a lot of odd behavior in electrical areas. october 29, 2009 brought jeep to used car dealership with these complaints: first check engine light started coming on, then it began flashing, door chime starts dinging, illuminated areas dim & brighten-flashing, dashboard lights go crazy flashing on & off, interior lights turn on & off, transmission lights go crazy & need to shift down in order to get vehicle to drive, headlights & tail lights flash on and off which is very unsafe while driving on a dark highway at night. used car dealership had car towed to jeep dealership in new london. these repairs cost $500.12 for faulty crank sensor, sensor crankshaft, spark plugs, leak at trans electrical. august 17, 2011 took to a new dealership w/ same problems. went to valenti jeep in mystic, ct. was advised junction block needed to be replaced and codes in multiple modules reset-this cost $318.52. september 10, 2011 back to valenti jeep for same problems & for install. of junction box costing $249.00 because of installation costs & other items we were advised to take care of. meanwhile as a warning this all begins after check engine light starts flashing. by september 28, 2011 it begins again: at this time check engine light & all other lights start up again, along with fact that you can now pull key out & vehicle is still running. blinking dash lights, ac on & off, gauges drop to 0, told only reason this is happening is because we have remote start system they don't use. tech reset system & disconnected our remote start system at a cost of $90.40. then by october of 2011-approximately, check engine light has returned & transmission lights are blinking. also headlights started flashing & tail lights. these issues are very sporadic.

2005 jeep grand cherokee has major transmission issues. i searched online to see if other people have had the same issue and found many leads. i called the chrysler recall number and they told me there was a recall in 2005 that has already been done on my vehicle in 2005. i took my car to the dealership for a diagnostic and they inquired me with a total of 1700.00 to get this repaired. my car gets stuck in gears, won't accelerate correctly, gets stuck in neutral, revs up on it's own, and it doesn't shift correctly. this is a safety issue that many people have had. this problem occurs every time i drive it.

My jeep transmission is defective and keeps blowing filter off or splitting them...when this happens i am traveling down the road at 60 mph..my vehicle jolts as if i have slammed the gears in park...this could result in major injury if the wheels lock while im going that rate of speed...after extensive research online i have found that many consumers who have 05 jeep grand cherokee are having the same problem however the dealerships seem to deny the fact that there is an issue with the components of the transmission...i have found many consumers have had issues with the transmission control module, shift solenoid, and the filters for the transmission.. this has been a ongoing issue and i am surprised that this has not been recalled...this can happen at any time...while driving down the road...or pulling out in front of traffic....i am worried that i will crash or someone else will crash into me in the event that my transmission fails again...i have had it repaired 6 times over 3 years now for the same issue and no longer feel safe while driving...i would like to have this matter investigated with chrysler, llc so that they may recall the products and take the time to repair these defective transmission components..

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo, 3.7l engine, automatic transmission. when driving, the vehicle will just shut off as if the key was turned off, losing all power. the vehicle will start afterwards and the check engine light will stay on for a few hours this has been going on for a couple years. this problem is similar to the recall on the 2008 grand cherokee stalling and i think this problem is more wide spread than chrysler wants to admit. i have an appointment with a jeep dealer who recently relocated in my area next week.

I have had the same complaint about my jeep grand cherokee 5.7l automatic transmision as the recall notice described below. that is, 8 out of 10 times, whenever i turn on the airconditioning (particularly in weather above 90 degrees) the car shutters if asked to pull forward or reverse. this problem is particularly bad and more predictable to occur if reversing; i.e., backing out of a parking space. over the last 3-4 years, i have asked two or three dealerships to look into the matter, citing the recall below, but they said that there is no way my car could have the same problem. one dealer claimed to have adjusted the clutch assembly on the air conditioner -- this did not help. ----------------- nhtsa campaign id number: 05v396000 summary: on certain sport utility vehicles equipped with 3.7l engines and nag1 automatic transmissions, the air conditioner evaporator condensate water may enter the transmission at the fill tube grommet seal. ***** this can result in shudder during torque converter clutch engagement. consequence: it can lead to increased transmission operating temperatures, boiling of the water, and a subsequent purging of transmission fluid into the engine compartment potentially resulting in an underhood fire. remedy: dealers will inspect the transmission for leakage at the fill tube grommet seal. if no leak is detected. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee gets stuck in first gear when starting up from a stopped position. this is random, and happens only once every 15 to 20 stops. the only way i can get it to shift is to manually shift gears. i have had it into the dealer four times and they cannot fix the problem. i called jeep customer service and they told me to go to another dealer. as the car is on extended warranty it costs me $100 each time i take it in. *tr

The 2005 jeep cherokee has severe problems related to the transmission. i bought this vehicle used with 10,000 miles on. i had 5 transmission related problems within 12 months. two of these problems left the vehicle inoperable; one of which the vehicle almost caught on fire. they replaced the transmission and i was still not happy. i traded in for a 2007 buick lucerne - which has been a great car. no more chrysler products for me! *tr

Purchased a 2005 jeep grand cherokee on april 19, 2007 dealer advertised a 7yr./70,000 powertrain warranty on the window sticker, vehicle had current mileage of 52,794 during test drive heard clicking sound from steering wheel thought it was normal when you signal. this continues to happen randomly till this date. oct.11,2007 took vehicle to jeep dealership for air conditioning problems, would hear growling sound, shut off, and only run on high. paid diagnostic fee 74.90. could not afford to pay for repair which was an extra $183 over the next couple of months would notice random shudder or rough starts while idling and driving, heard weird winding sound and vehicle would stall. check engine light came on and took to autozone, given transmission codes on 5/16/2008 took to dealership and requested diagnostic service because engine light on and having some kind of transmission problem according to autozone codes, and requested recall work done, was told we would have to pay $95. we informed them we have a warranty and should not have to pay the fee according to chrysler cust. service. they insisted. told them just do recall work we could not afford fee. according to receipt tech only installed transmission fill tube oil seal. after service vehicle still shuddering and stalling on the way home. 7/17/08 took jeep back to dealership to get transmission diagnosed, paid $95. was told failure in the torque converter, internal failure, and codes are the same as the one autozone gave earlier. repair solutions offered were an overhaul with a price quote of $3100 or replace for $3500. we called chrysler about warranty they said we don't have one. we called the dealership we bought the jeep from and they say we do have the chrysler warranty. after they talked to each other dealer was informed about chrysler's warranty policy and acknowledges telling us about warranty but has yet to offer repair service or any solution. *tr

I bought a brand new 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo, within weeks i started to notice the upholstery was not treated, it would stain with the slightest bit of condensation or rain. after about 8-12 months i started to feel it getting sluggish when accelerated but the problem was intermittent. brought it in to dealership and they said no problem was detected. the real problems started after i had the vehicle 2yrs..check engine light would come on, gears would stick, engine would roar up to 4.5 rpms and would not accelerate. this would happen in rush hour traffic, on ramps to the higway, green lights etc.. i almost got creamed by an 18 wheeler. the vehicle would buck and sputter. if i kept my foot on the gas it would eventually clunk into gear.it had been to the dealership 6 times. at one point they replaced they transmission module..that did not fix the problem. it started to get tiresome, dealership was condenscending claiming they could not duplicate the problem. no luck with gm's ,serv mgrs, and the chrysler corp. chysler does not honor their warranties or care about their customers. i feared for my life in the vehicle and just traded it in, upside down, yesterday. i had no fight left in me. this was the worst experience you could imagine buying a brand new suv. something needs to be done before someone is fatally injured. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4. the transmission failed at a busy intersection with wife and two children aboard in november 2006. the dealership had to call chhrysler prior to ordering parts because chrysler had a holdon the parts needed to make the repair. the hold placed on the parts was due to the fact chrysler knew there was a problem with the transmission and wanted to make sure the dealership fixed the problem correctly. since that time, the jeep's new transmission hesitates when climbing hills, accelerating etc. i have taken the jeep back to the dealership to have this problem corrected. the dealership and chrysler have acknowledged the problem with the automobile. chrysler described the problem to the dealership as fish nipping at bait. chrysler's technical team tells the dealership they are working on a new computer program to fix this problem. it has now been 2 months since the diagnosis, and who knows how long since chrysler has been aware of the problem and i still am driving, and paying for, a vehicle that the manufacturer knows is faulty. in addition, i have not been able to receive any satisfaction by calling chrysler's numerous 1-800 numbers. all i have been told is that the appropriate parties have been contacted. who those are i do not know and they would not tell me! my dealership and chryslers technical team have already been in contact and they are aware of the problem! i have been told that the defect the jeep is experiencing will not harm the automobile. i have not once been concerned with the effect the defect has on the automobile but i have been concerned with the effect it has on my wife and i when driving the automobile. i want to know what chrysler plans on doing about selling me a vehicle that has not worked properly for the majority of time i have owned it! their lack of concern regarding their product and the safety of those who drive their product is appalling. *ak

Vehicle transmission has always made strange clunking noises. vehicle began to drop out of gear while driving and then finally (and currently) will completely shut off while driving. this has happened on numerous occasions and dealership says that they cannot duplicate the problem. a customer service manager did tell me that jeep is aware of the problem and this is a common problem among v8 models such as mine but that they just do not know how to fix it so they have not yet issued a recall. however, jeep is putting so many people at risk of an accident. not only the vehicle drive but everyone else on the road around the vehicle. the vehicle now shuts off while in motion driving on a fairly regular basis but with no consistent pattern. $34,000 dollars worth of worry. *jb

I had a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited with approximately 24,000 miles on it. in december 2006 it down shifted itself into low gear while doing a forward speed of approximately 10 mph. i took the car to the local jeep dealer who after keeping it for the day told me that they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. on february 9, 2007 with approximately 27,500 miles on the same vehicle it did the same thing again only this time at a speed of approximately 20 to 25 mph. the vehicle was basically uncontrollable. i took the car back to the dealer who told me once again that there was nothing wrong with the transmission and, in writing, told me to change my driving habits. they assumed i was down shifting the car by mistake. i had so little confidence in the vehicle that i traded it in on a new car. if this should happen at highway speed and the vehicle slips sideways it will roll over. *jb

We leased a 2005 jeep cherokee in january 2005 and in january 2006 everything on the dashboard started to cut off including turn signals, odometer... and everything on the dash including the cd player, the buttons for the heater/ac would overheat and the car began to smoke for no apparent reason. we took it in to galeana, the local dealership and they could not find a problem, which apparently seems to happen quite often with chyrsler automobiles. shortly after the car began to break down everywhere. if i parked the car at a store, work, home... and went back to start it, it would not crank. this happens 8 out of 10 times and the vehicle has been taken to the dealership 5 times and they could not duplicate a problem and now they tell me they can't do anything for me. shortly after that at the end of 2006, as i was driving down the highway a pebble as the dealership calls it, went through my grill and hit the transmission coolant, spraying transmission fluid everywhere almost catching on fire with me and my two small children in it. we took it to the dealership and apparently the transmission was blown out, $4,000 dollars to replace. all of our other problems still exists and chrysler does not want to fix the problems or let us out of the lease. i have tried talking to chrysler and getting this issue resolved only to hear them telling me that this was not their problem. this is becoming a trend in their business and if they cannot fix the vehicles they manufactured they should not be making the vehicles in the first place. *jb

Purchased vehicle on 7-31-06. upon test drive the door locks would nt lock or unlock when using door key (any dr in the car). the remote did work. salesman told us 2 bring it in if it cont'd. taken in 5 times since the 1st time in october 05', dealerships cannot dupt the issue. last dealership said that if he toggled switch about 10 times it happened, but that was just overheating the button & that is normal. problem is i work in a building w/a prkg garage & work all hrs. when i get into my car, 4 safety i lock the drs immed. there have been several occasions where i can't do that & have 2 wait 2 get the car moving over the 15mi an hour 2 lock the drs. next issue is the delayed engagement in the transmission going 2 rev or drv. the car has been in on 3 occasions for this item of which the dealership clears codes or cannot dupt the issue. this issue became a an issue in a construction zone at a rr track near our home. gates were down when i drove up & i was 3rd car back, the gates went up, 2 cars went through & i was almost at the tracks when the railroad arms started coming down again. i put on the brakes & shifted to reverse 2 back up & the delay nearly caused the rr arm 2 hit the car. i backed up just enough to clear the rr arm by less than 6 inches. the last item is the a/c. since late march of 06' we have been experiencing the a/c blowing cold, then the air turns 2 warm or hot air blowing from 3 sec 2 minutes of blowing humid air before the system will kick in again with cold air. this has been intermittently like the other 2 items above. 3 times into the dealerships & again it was stated they fixed it when it wasn't or it's 114 degrees out, it is going 2 blow warm air. using outside air will make the a/c blow warm air'. the incident date is hard since there are 3 issues so i put the day of purchase. the failures are also hard to calculate, but since these items happen intermittently & or everyday (a/c) i counted 3 mo worth. *nm

I have a 2005 jeep cherokee with 3,000 miles. i took it in for a transmission seal recall, e13. two days after it was serviced, i was on the highway and the transmission burned up, leaving me stranded. car had to be towed 150 miles to dealer who handled recall. my car has been in the shop a month. i am having to pay daily car rental which has now cost me over $1,200 in addition to having to make a car payment for a car i don't have. i keep getting different answers from dealer, said transmission ordered days ago from new jersey, now says it was ordered yesterday, july 14, he says he can't tell me anything, when, if it is new or rebuilt, or how much longer i have to wait. i have never been treated so rudely by a dealership, manager, and service manager. i will never purchase a vehicle from that dealer again and i am inclined to never buy another jeep product. i am at the point of turning the car back and seeking legal action if something isn't done about this outrageous situation. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated there was nhtsa recall campaign 05v396000 regarding the automatic transmission. the recall was performed on the vehicle, but afterwards it continued to shudder while driving. although the repairs were performed accordingly the vehicle had a strong shudder that could physically be felt by the contact as well as a loud chatter from the transmission. while shifting from park to reverse there was a loud clanking noise. aside from the problem with the automatic transmission the electrical system displayed some abnormalities. while driving the dashboard panel lights illuminated and all of the gauges, such as the fuel and speedometer failed to register. the defroster which was in use at that time stopped working. this problem lasted only a matter of seconds but returned to normal when the check engine light illuminated. this occurred 5 or 6 times in a 5 mile radius and abruptly stopped with no further incident. when the contact returned the vehicle to the dealer for the automatic transmission, the electrical system problem was reported to the service department. the contact left the vehicle at the dealer for inspection. however, the service department has been unable to duplicate the problem. *ak

The automatic transmission of my 2005 jeep grand cherokee ,began acting unusual in mid november 2005. the transmission would clunk when put into drive , the vehicle seemed to hesitate before moving, also on 2 occasions the vehicle would down shift to first gear and then back to drive on its own while in motion. on december 18, 2005 i told the jeep dealer service manger of the problem when i took the vehicle in , i had received from daimler-chrysler a recall notice concerning the transmission , as far as i know the dealership performed the recall repair. the vehicle seemed fine until december 30, 2005 when while traveling on the expressway at 55 miles per hour with the cruise control engaged the vehicle again downshifted to first gear momentarily , all the warning lights came on then shifted back to drive the engine revved up and speed up unexpectedly . i then lost control of the vehicle spinning out and hitting the concrete divider wall of the expressway. the vehicle sustained over $10,000 in damage, luckily there were no injuries to me or my passenger. i have notified chrysler and my insurance company of problem, at this point i have not authorized any collision repairs to this vehicle. chrysler said they would inspect the vehicle, i await to see what they will do. i don't intend to repair or drive this vehicle again or any jeep cherokee ,for that matter as to its unsafe transmission . *nm

3.7 l jeep grand cherokee laredo with 9,000 miles. first major trip we have (about 500 miles away from home), our vehicle stalled. there was fire under the hood, it's good that the suv stalled in front of the service center or there could be an explosion. we just purchased this vehicle in less than 6 mos. the service center told us that it will take about 2 weeks till we could get our jeep back and it's already 17 days; i made a follow-up and was told that they haven't received the transmission that they've ordered. the service center have us rent a car. called chrysler and we were told that there is only safety concern and our vin number is not included in the recall. how is that possible when in one web page, we saw 18 similar transmission complaints on the same vehicle? chrysler won't cover our car rentals and motel. *jb

I continue to have an on-going problem with the transmission of my 2005 jeep grand cherokee 3.7l vehicle. it has been in the shop for (4) four service inspections due to a recurring transmission problem. the transmission will shudder, miss, jump usually between 3rd, 4th, and/or 5th gears between speeds of 30mph - 40mph. the vehicle received (2) two computer downloads to try to correct the problem, but it was unsuccessful. the third service trip resulted in no repair being made, due to the service department being unable to find the type of problem that existed. the fourth trip consisted of the transmission recall service being performed, again with no change in the performance of the vehicle. while i continue to have the same problem, i am at a loss as to how to have the vehicle repaired. *nm

The has a tendency to stall when shifting gear while backing up out of the drive after the car has been idle for a period of time. the transmission seems to clunk more than a new car should. also noticed the tendency for the car to stall in stop and go traffic conditions. it seems the transmission is not disengaging properly pulling the rpm below idle. shifting the car to neutral or giving gas prevents the engine from stalling. *jb

Transmission: i have a 05 jeep cherokee that has continuously had a transmission shudder problem. while driving, the transmission shudders, feels sluggish, jerking the vehicle forward and backward. it happens while traveling at various speeds, but it is excessive while at the 40 mph & 1500 rpm range. the first time it was taken to the dealership, they did a transmission flush and told me to pick it up. the second time, they ordered, then later replaced the drive line. the third time to dealership, the service technician said they reprogrammed the transmission. it has now been dropped off for the same problem 4 times, and still no remedy. i called the dealership again and told them about a possible recall i read about on the nhtsa website on the problem i was having. the public information specifically suggests a remedy, replace the torque converter (which has not been tried on my vehicle). i asked them why they couldn't use that information to fix my vehicle since it is still under warranty rather than wait to see if a recall is even issued, and i was told that the engineers are working on a remedy for the possible recall i was reading about, and it may not affect my vehicle. so, until that recall is issued, nothing can be done. air conditioner:on 9/22/05, while vehicle in motion, air conditioner, radio, &all dash lights went off at same time, stayed off for 5 seconds or so, then came back on. 5 miles or so later, the same thing happened again. later on the same day, the air conditioner would only work on the highest setting. on my way to the service appointment the next day, the air conditioner would come on and turn off itself, like it has an electrical short in it or the dash. i can also smell plastic burning/melting but can not locate where it is coming from. dealership now states that parts are not available to fix the air conditioner, and they do not have any timeline for parts availability. no clue why the dash lights shut down. *jb

With only 10,500 miles on our leased 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited- the vehicle has spent the last 27 days in a service repair center. the issues began with a rough transmission, car sticking in 3rd gear - limp mode (required car to pull over, park & restart to disable limp mode), ac getting hot on acceleration with strong chemical smell, greasy oil leak on inside of cabin out of hood release opening, excessive road noise, check engine light remained on, and easy entry/exit seat not functioning. according to my ten page invoice, the service center replaced the rear drive shaft, entire transmission, almost all the modules (one of which was already replaced for fog light recall), updated firmware, a kick panel and trim on the inside of the cabin that was stained from grease leak, balanced all 4 tires, power flushed, replaced sensors... amongst other things. my husband and i were informed that the ac unit was leaking into the transmission, that it was a very common problem with the jeeps, 300s and dodges. so serious, in fact, that chrysler may be considering a mass recall to remedy a gross oversight on their part to physically bend a dip stick to fit parts around it- causing a gap at the base of the rubber gasket that enabled water to enter trans (thro wiring harness). it took the service center 45 minutes to explain all the issues with our car & what was done to it to fix it. we've contacted a lemon law lawyer & are looking to take this to the highest level possible. for $40,000 we expect a lot more for our money!! fyi... trans still rough after all repairs!!!! *nm

I took possession of a new jeep grand cherokee on 29 june 2005. that afternoon, when first driven above 60 mph, a front-end vibration (oscillation) was immediately evident. actually the vibration is present at all speeds. i arranged for a service appointment at steve christy chrysler jeep here in tucson. my first warranty visit for the vibration problem was made on 18 july 2005. the diagnosis there was a bad tire, which i had replaced at a goodyear tire shop per instructions from this dealership. it had no effect on the vibration. i have since been in to jim click chrysler jeep in tucson on three occasions for a total of eight full days. the vibration persists. i was informed that i would be unable to have further repair attempts without direction from chrysler engineering. the latest repair attempt resulted in a modification to the drive shaft by adding six weights at positions on the drive shaft. after this activity, which did not fix the vibration, i was told that the remaining vibration was in the design. i had a local respected automotive shop evaluate the vibration and they concluded it had a problem. i asked three fellow engineers to evaluate the vibration and all concluded there was a problem. (note, one of the engineers has five years experience driving and testing vehicles professionally.) chrysler still claims the vibration is in the design. the vibration is bad enough that i am afraid to take the vehicle on a road trip or tow a trailer. the vibration is at times violent and i do not know if something could break or if the oscillation could cause loss of control. i was informed by a maintenance supervisor that there were two reasons for chrysler to take the in the design position. 1) there are thousands of vehicles that made it out of the factory with this problem and 2) the problem is a chassis alignment flaw and can not be repaired. *nm
