I purchased a used 2005 jeep grand cherokee. a few days after i bought it i was cleaning the inside and opened the back passenger door. upon doing so i noticed the handle is broken. it is still operable but i don't know how long it will last. i looked online and see that apparently everyone that has this model has the same problem, some people with all 4 handles useless and unable to open any door from the inside. i have a 3 yr old son that sits in the seat where the handle is breaking. if there was an accident or emergency i want the door to be able to open. if the handle breaks, because of a manufacturer defect, and he cuts his hand on the jagged plastic i think that could cause a lawsuit. if i have an adult in the back seat and there is an emergency the person may not be able to exit. this is not safe or acceptable.

The left rear door handle has broken off. i open the door to place an item in the back seat and noticed the door handle laying inside the door. the handle itself is in tack but the plastic surrounding where the handle attaches with the door was broken. there was not trauma, heavy or extensive use placed on the door (inside or out). when researching possible solutions to my problem, i became overwhelmed by how many other owners were dealing with the same problem. i called a couple of dealers and was floored by the cost to fix the situation and attempting to used a door from the junk yard is not a solution due to the problem appearing to be universal to this vehicle. my concern is that i now have a vehicle where one door can only be opened from the outside creating a safety issue. on an upside, i am thankful after reading other peoples situations that i only have one door affected, but now i am on edge and cautious that my other doors will soon follow suit.

I opened the door to get out and the interior driver's side handle broke off of the door panel. i went to the dealer and the handle is part of the door panel. the handle's hinge is set in plastic which happens to be in the same one piece door panel. the door panel has to be replaced ($795 for the part and $259 for the installation). on line i noticed that there were many complaints with this problem. it is possible to get locked in the car

All four inner door handles have broken and fallen out. none are operable. we have to let down the glass to exit.

Jeep will not crank. lights come on and stereo works but only clicks when the key is turned. jumper cables did not fix the problem.

All the door handles on this vehicle are cracked and broken and two of them no longer operate from the inside!

Cracks in interior door plastic leaving door handles difficult to manage. same problem as so many others have reported. called jeep directly and no solution offered. dealership is not willing to fix the broken part under warranty.

2005 jeep cherokee limited. there has been an issue for years reguarding the plactic door panels interrior of the car. with all 4 doors cracked and 1 ( drivers door) will not open from the inside. this is a life safety to all occupants in this car. with a crash or fire to happen and you cant get out of a door due to poor design of the door by the manufactor. theses door panels start out with small hair cracks and one time of opening the door you have cracked all the plastic and not able to open up the door. i feel that jeep needs to stand up and correct this issue on a recall. after this happeneing you can take it in and they will put the new design that doesnt have this poor design for just over 800 dollars a door. so with this manufactor making a change to the panel, says they knew it was a poor design. this is happeneing to my understanding jeeps of 2005- to around 2010. i have paid close attenetion to the same year that i own and 90% of the time you see the cracks at the handels inside. please lets figure somthing out before people lose there kids life or there own life.
11/30/2011
All of the inside door handle pockets have fallen apart, the plastic used was bad and this should be a recall due to the saftey issue. i could see if one went bad, but all four, this is a major problem. from what i have seen online, it seems all types of this vehicle and year seem to have the problem.
12/10/200850000
All 4 interior door latches broken- 3 will not open from inside!!!!!!! will happily join any class action suit! 3rd jeep owned but now last one!
12/01/2011
All 4 interior door opening handles are breaking/failing. rear door totally inoperable. this is a dangerous safety issue. in an emergency situation, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing injury or death. manufacturer safety recall warranted!
06/04/201270000
Plastic framing around front and rear passenger inside door handles cracked and disintegrated, leaving door handles unusable. passengers cannot exit the vehicle without door being opened from outside the vehicle.
09/05/201190000
The area right above all 4 door handles are cracked and ready to come off the door. which would leave me with no way to exit my car.

When attempting to start the vehicle, i heard one click and nothing happened. lights and gauges worked, but nothing else. jeep was jumped and then started right up. it went two months and is now doing the same again. within a week, it has done it 3 times. battery replaced and starter checks out fine. also gauges dim and then come back on within seconds. the alarm goes off whenever it feels like it. doors sometimes will not unlock with the fob which sets the alarm off. nav system only works when it feels like it. low setting on heater doesn't work. this lemon needs recalled!!!
03/19/2012
Broken interior door handles (driver and front passenger) and cannot open the doors from inside. i found many compliants online with similar problem. i am very concerned an accident can occur and we would be trapped because the doors cannot be opened from the inside.

The plastic wells behind all four interior door handles have broken, leaving a gaping hole ringed by sharp spikes of plastic shards. this occurred prior to my purchasing the vehicle on the date indicated as the date of the incident. this is a widely reported issue. the next stage of the failure is that the interior door handles will eventually break out of the door and come off into the door operator's hand, requiring the door to be opened from the outside. once this occurs, the failure will become a significant safety risk as passengers will be unable to open the door from the inside, effectively trapping them inside in the event of a severe accident or fire. jeep has fielded thousands of complaints about this particular failure and numerous videos made by unhappy consumers have been posted to youtube and other similar sites. jeep currently charges $500-$700 to replace the entire door panels while a niche market has been created by individuals selling injection molded replacement parts that jeep does not sell. this is an unacceptable solution and jeep needs to issue a recall. it becomes a minor safety issue the moment our fingers come into close proximity of the sharp plastic shards surrounding the opening, and it becomes a major safety issue the moment we and our passengers are no longer able to open a door from inside the vehicle. please make this happen.

Broken interior door handles and can't open door from inside. i have read lots of people having same issues with jeep grand cherokee.
09/01/200840000
Indoor housing for door handles broken on all 4 doors....i replaced drivers side handle 2 years ago, now it is broken along with others....so 3200 to replace all 4 doors panels...internet and this site full of similar complaints, defective material or design....i have always had jeeps and still buy jeep, but this was a problem that they didn't take care of like they should have...unsafe to not be able to open door from inside.

My door handles on my truck would not let me get out . i had to put the window down to get out of my truck . i hear alot of people with the model jeep i have also encountered this problem .

This is about my 4 door handles in my jeep they have all cracked. one on the passenger front side is almost not usuable. my warranty does not cover it, i tried to call multiple chrysler places, they can't help me. my dealership has quoated me over $2500. i just don't have that kind of money to fix doors that i have not damaged. there plastic which does not help. i've gone on several websites and i have found so many complaints with the same problem as myself. i find that this is obvisously a jeep problem. i feel they should be fixed or that jeep should issue a recall.

2005 jeep grand cherokee... appx 2-3 yrs ago, driver side door handle separated from door panel. finally got dealer to fix under warranty. appx 3-6 mos ago, same thing happened to other 3 doors -- called chrysler customer care and told because of mileage (appx 80k) and age of vehicle... no extended warranty was forthcoming... dealer estimates $600-$900 per door. safety issue... doors can not be opened except from the outside. in event of accident, rear occupants would be unable to open doors and escape vehicle in timely manner.

Interior door handles are made with material that do not support the normal wear and tear. clearly a safety hazard to be riding a vehicule, whether as the driver or passenger, and if an emergency calls for you to abandon it, as you pull the handle to open your door the handle brakes in your hand and cannot open the door. in the event of an emergency, we are talking, not about minutes, but seconds to react and move away from danger. failure to open, could represent the difference between minutes and seconds that could prevent major injury if not death in case of an accident.

Front driver-passenger side door panels. i recently discovered that my front driver and passenger door panels have cracked around the interior door handle. the cracks have progressed to the point where the door handles dislodged from the panel from repeated use. the cost of each panel is $770.00, excluding labor. the dealer where purchased stated there is nothing we can do about it. what's disconcerting is that the back of panel shows reinforcement (thicker plastic) for the window buttons but the material is paper-thin for the door handle. once the door handle falls off, the only way to open the door is to roll down the window and push the exterior button. i have filed a complaint with chrysler.

From the many forums i have researched, this is not the first complaint about faulty door handles in the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. all four of mine have cracked and large chunks of the inside of the cup have fallen off into the door panel. one of the doors in just about inoperable because of the location of the crack and i know its only a matter of time before the rest of them follow. as a mother of 2 children, it scares me to think that they could be stuck inside of a vehicle that could have been in an accident. to me, there is no excuse for the company to not issue a recall on the parts, as they will sooner or later be looking down the line of a huge class action law suit for someone losing a passenger or their own life due to being unable to open their door. imagine a car rolling over and catching fire. as quickly as that could go up in flames in only a matter of seconds, what counts are the moments that person is fighting with getting a door open, or in a vehicle without having to fight and saving a life or 5, as this is a 5 passenger car. i would strongly suggest that this be seriously considered and pressure be applied to the manufacturers of jeep to issue a recall for all vehicles with that type of door handle.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited's interior door handles have broken from their door panels.

I replaced the drive door handle after it cracked in 2009. now the rear passenger door handle broke off. it is now a safety violation as my daughter is unable to exit out the door due to a broken handle. again the passenger door is cracked at the handle. the count is now three of the four doors requiring replacement. i take great care of my car and this is a clear safety violation as the doors were made with substandard materials. i am now at 121,647 miles and would like to know if issuance of a recall to fix all of the doors will occur on the jeep grand cherokees made in 2005. thank you

The door handles on two doors have failed and broken off. this is a safety issue as door can only be opened from the outside and so far i have been quoted $1100 to replace and repair these handles as the entire inside door component must be replaced.
06/01/2010100000
On all interior door handles, the plastic backing that is recessed or 'cupped' behind the actual silver handles you pull to open the doors has cracked. the back left door cracked to a degree where the handle seperated from the opening cable, so the door can not be opened from the inside. the driver door is close. all handles show the same sign of cracking though. if there was an accident, my children in the back would have a hard time getting out.

I purchased this vehicle in 2011, i was the second owner. the left rear plastic behind the door handle was severly cracked, at the time of purchase the dealer replaced this one and stated that it cost $500.00 per door to replace. the two of the three remaining doors had hairline cracks and were barley noticible. in october 2011 had a passenger in the right rear seat. when they tried to get out they could not. i opened the door from the outside. thought i had the child proof locks on. there was a big chunk of plastic missing behind the door handle on this side. it did not occur to me that anything was wrong until 04/31/2012 when a large piece of plastic fell inside the door from behind the drivers door handle. then i started reading about all the problems with these doors on the internet. the door handles will fall out, because there is nothing to hold them in place. now i have 2 doors with big chunks of plastic missing and the third door is severly cracked. called chrysler, opened a case. they called offered to fix them for $500.00. they told me my vehicle was out of warranty. i told them that i had nothing to do with warranty, it was a safety issue if you could not get out of the car. they were not willing to fix it. this is a safty issue! if the vehicle caught on fire and you could not get out you would be burned alive.

Interior door handles are defective. the plastic surrounding the interior door handles has become brittle and broken allowing pieces to fall inside the door. this breakage has rendered the door handles inoperative and prevents the door from being opened from the inside. in the event of an accident the occupants of the vehicle would be trapt inside, especially if the power windows also became inoperative.

The rear right door handle broke. my truck has under 80,000 miles

I am at the end of my rope with this same story. my story is exactly like the other 824 complaints posted here. my indoor handles, on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee, have broken. my children and i cannot exit my vehicle without rolling down windows. heaven knows what will happen if we are ever in an emergency situation which includes the failure of my vehicle's electronic system, because we would literally be trapped inside without the use of our windows. i have complained, and complained and complained to the chrysler company. no one will help me. my quote, to repair each door, is $750. as a single mother who works very hard to pay my vehicle payments as it is, i am now faced with the burden of having to pay another $3,000 in order to keep my family safe. enough is enough. i have never sued anyone in my life, nor have i ever considered doing so, but this is the final straw. it is time for a class action lawsuit, people! i see no reason why the chrysler company can't produce a strong, failproof repair kit in order to keep their loyal customers safe. this is absolutely rediculous.

The interior door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are all broken. two of them are inoperable. the cheap material used by the manufacturer should be recalled as it cracks very easily. once the inside handle is broken the door can not be opened from the inside. this is a safety concern in case of a fire or accident. the dealer says the whole door panel would have to be replaced and not just the handle, as they are attached together. the cost of each panel is approximaetly $700 each.

Rear door handle plastic around base began cracking & currently driver door hand is about to fall off. this is dangerous! this plastic surrounding the door handles began with small cracks then huge chunks fell out . this could cost a life of my grandchildren or even myself as driver. nevermind anyone owning one. this saftey hazard should be an immediate safety recall! i am astounded at the numbers of jeep owners reporting same or similar incidents.i hope to hear it has been issued.
10/10/201145000
I bought this jeep brand new and it is garage kept. we are older and have no young kids riding in our car. it still looks like its brand new. my 1998 jeep which i still own has 86,000 miles on it doors are perfect. my 2005 has three interior door handles that are cracked or completely broken. the back door has to be open from the outside. this is a safety matter. it's really unfortunate the amount of complaints but no recall. will it take someone getting in a firey crash or running into a pond and not being able to get out of their car?

The handles on both rear doors have cracked making them unusable. you cannot open the door from the inside, safety issue. they are made of cheap plastic that breaks off. the only person that rides in my back seat is my 84 year old mother who has very little strength in her hands. in order to replace it you have to buy the entire door panel for 500 dollars plus labor. please consider issuing a safety recall.

The plastic doors, which encloses the door handles for the passengers, have cracked and broken off, rendering the door handles inoperable, this inhibit the exit of occupants from the vehicle. the only options for existing the vehicle is to roll the window down or have someone outside of the vehicle open the door.

My jeep is down to only the two front door handles which are completely cracked and ready to break off at any time. the rear doors have no handles and pose a serious risk if the vehicle is ever in a car accident and people are trapped inside. jeep needs to step up and fix their mistake.

Interior door handles have cracked and broken causing the handle to be completely unusable from the inside of the vehicle. driver has to open window and access the exterior door handle to open the door. back seat passengers are unable to get out without exterior assistance. this a safety concern as the passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle easily in case of an accident.
12/02/201191000
The jeep grand cherokee interior door panels are defective . the handles are all plastic and they all break off from the door panel. this is a very unsafe problem that could cost a life if the person reaches for the handle to get out of the car and cannot. they need to make this a recall and issue parts to replace this for free for owners of the jeeps.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has had all 4 door handles crack and 1 has completely broken off. after researching the internet, i have found that this is a common occurrence on this vehicle, and seems to be a major safety concern. in any occasion where exiting the vehicle quickly is necessary, broken door handle(s) can risk injury and death to occupants. this is not a minor issue, just like an emergency exit in a building, it can be potentially fatal. nhtsa owes the people of the united states of america the common courtesy to acknowledge that this posses a huge risk for it's citizens. please protect our right to safe vehicles, and the responsibility of auto makers to remedy any errors in design that pertain to human safety!

2 interior door opening handles breaking/failing: front passenger door totally inoperable. driver door supporting interior is breaking and back doors cracking and breaking without anyone using them, my vehicle is in impecable condition. ***this is a dangerous safety issue if handles break or are inoperable in certain emergency situations, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing serious injury or death!*** manufacturer charge to replace/repair handles is prohibitively expensive; hope you will address as a recall before someone is seriously injured because they cannot get out of the vehicle in an emmergency situation.

All 4 interior door handles broken or cracked and about to break off completely. major safety hazard - unable to open/operate doors from the inside in case of accident or emergency. obvious manufacturer defect using very inferior design/materials. recall requested as hundreds of jeep owners are reporting the exact same issue.

Inside door handles start to break at the plastic housing where the handle attach to. two doors are broken and unusable at the moment. passengers can't exit the vehicle which pose a big security risk. this is a common problem on jeep grand cherokee and should be fixed for free by the manufacturer. today it costs approx $3000 to fix all four doors.

Hemi motor stalled, back-fired, caught fire in engine compartment and lost control of steering. vehicle accelerated and left the road and flipped onto six cars in parking lot. at that point inside of vehicle caught fire. passengers were a 5 year old boy and the driver was a 63 year old male. seven vehicles were destroyed in this accident.

3 of the interior door knobs have broken off on this vehicle. what if i had passengers and was involved in a wreck? no one would be able to get out! i am not the only one experiencing this problem... it is all over the internet. does someone have to be killed before the company is prompted to fix this problem? a manufactures defect should be covered/fixed by the manufacturer... http://www.denlorstools.com/autoblog/2010/11/jeep-grand-cherokee-interior-door-handle-broken-recall/

The front passenger and both rear interior door handles have broken off. there is no way to exit the vehicle in case of an emergency! i have found on the internet that this is a common occurence but i haven't found out what the company is offering for a fix. this is an obvious manufacturers defect considering that all three of them broke within days of one another.

I have been dealing with this for years in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the door handles on the inside are all broken. one in the back is comepletely broke off and the 2 in the front are hanging by a wire. this is a very dangerous issue and i get nowhere when trying to talk to jeep or even jeep dealers. recently i saw online many more people with this problem and someone even said jeep agreed to a $50 copay in 2010. i brought my jeep into the dealer when it was still covered under my extended warrenty bought from jeep when i bought it in 2006, and they told me it is cosmestic and not covered. when calling jeep i was told nobody has died so no recall and i am responsible for replacing these door handles. you can not replace the handles only, you have to replace the whole panel and total cost is around $3000. with the amount of people having this issue it is unbelievable that it is not being addressed on a large scale. if one of us gets killed from being trapped inside of their jeep because the door handles are all broken they will have a huge price to pay. i am down to one handle, and extremely unhappy! please help!!!

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited v8 5.7l and 3 of the 4 door handles are cracked. a couple of them have been cracked for a while, but recently another one literally just cracked open by just opening the rear door with little force. there have been numerous claims on this issue at this site http://www.denlorstools.com/autoblog/2010/11/jeep-grand-cherokee-interior-door-handle-broken-recall/. clearly i am not the first person who has had this issue. my jeep is in great condition, so this isn't an abuse issue. i am concerned that the condition the rear doors are in will soon make them non-functional. the repair for this issue is a ridiculous amount.

The driver side interior door handle began to crack, followed by the other three interior door handles. i can barely open any of the doors from the inside at this point. i fear that very soon, i won't be able to open any of the doors from the inside at all rendering my vehicle useless. this is obviously a factory defect that i could not have caused by myself. the door handles on my vehicle should not be falling apart after only six years. the poor quality of the plastic used to make the door panels is clearly the problem. i cannot afford to replace all four door panels on my own, nor do i feel that i should take full responsibility for cost. i am extremely frustrated and upset by the disappointing quality of the vehicle and the current state of the economy is not making things easier for me.

The jeep grand cherokee interior door panels are defective . the handles are all plastic and they all break off from the door panel. jeep has refused to do anything about it. they have a waiting list for new door panels and they will not produce the part to fix this safety issue. this is a very unsafe problem that could cost a life if the person reaches for the handle to get out of the car and cannot. they need to make this a recall and issue parts to replace this for free for owners of the jeeps.

On approximately december 8, 2010 the plastic around the inside left rear door handle cracked while my daughter was opening the door from the inside. after that the handle was loose and i frequently had to open the door from the outside to let her out of the jeep. around july of 2011 my father tried to open the door from the inside and more of the plastic surrounding the handle broke off and the handle fell down inside the door panel. now the door cannot be opened at all from the inside. this is a major safety issue. the door handle was never handled in a rough manner and should never have failed like this.

Interior door latch on rear drivers side door completely broke off and drivers side front door latch beginning to crack around plastic and incur same problem. this is a huge safety issue in case of accident or fire one would be trapped inside vehicle unable to exit presumably dying from injuries. this is an obvious on going problem with the jeep cherokee and i feel chrysler needs to own responsibility for this and incur the expense of all repairs.

Inside door handle plastic is broken in one door and cracked in two others. once this plastic breaks the inside door handles fall out rendering the door inoperable from the inside. in an accident there is no way to get out through the door unless you break a window and reach the outside handle. from the research i have done online it appears that this is a common issue with these vehicles. jeep does not sell this assembly seperately. it is only available by purchasing an entire door panel at a cost of five hundred per rear door handle and six hundred plus per front and this does not include installation.

Interior door handles cracked, loose, and about ready to break off. if an accident/fire were to occur, it would leave interior occupants trapped inside the vehicle if you pull on the handles too hard. this is definitely a case of poor construction/design. needs to be addressed.

All interior door handles have cracked and become loose. one passenger side rear door handle completely fell off. dealer said $2,000 to fix all doors, handles have not been repaired. cannot exit car without rolling down the windows and opening doors from the outside.

Good afternoon. within the past 24 months, all 4 of my door handles (interior) have had hair line cracks that have developed into full breaks on the door handles causing safety concerns for myself and my children should we be in an emergency and be unable to get out of the car. i had purchased an extended warranty on my jeep (7 years or 70,000.00) miles and when i had taken it in to our authorized dealer, they informed me that it was not covered. i have received a quote to fix this and was informed that they need to replace the entire door panel as the handle itself is not a part in itself, which will cost over $2000.00 for parts and labor. my vehicle is in excellent shape except for this.

The interior door panels on 3 of the 4 doors on my grand cherokee are broken and show stress fractures around the interoir door handle, the part of the door behind the interior door handle that is attached to the rest of the door panel. this part is very weak and prone to fracture, making the interior door handle fall free into the vehicle. the doors are barely operable and i am worried in a collision these doors will not function. the front panels cost $750 a piece and the rears cost $450. i can not afford the repairs so i am forced to drive an unsafe vehicle as this is my only vehicle. jeep and chrysler are well aware of the issue as i found out when i asked about the problem at the dealership. this issue needs to be fixed now and if chrysler isn't going to do it willingly it falls to the ntsb to step in and prevent needless deaths due to faulty door handles.
09/09/200856924
All interior door panels on the 2005 jeep grand cherokee have cracked and, in some cases, broke apart around the door handle. i have had three repaired at a dealership at personal cost and one is pending. i believe it is a defect in the plastic resin manufacturing process for the early 2005 grand cherokees because all four door panels have cracked in the exact same place. chrysler was contacted on numerous occasions and denies that this is an issue. this is a potential safety issue because if the door handle breaks loose, you cannot open the door to exit the vehicle from the inside. this exact issue has been documented several times by other grand cherokee owners and all of them have had similar results with chrysler's denial of an issue.

When opening rear door, handle broke in several places. person opening door was only 4 so it was due to the over exertion. it is now not possible to open the rear door from inside the car.

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door handles have broken and there is no way to relace just the door handle. you have to replace each door handle. and that cost about 2000.00 a piece for each door panel.

The interior door handles both front and back are cracking and breaking off in my jeep grand cherokee limited 2005. no longer is it possilble to open the front passenger side door from the inside. the back passenger side door is the same. both the front and back driver side handles are cracking with pieces of plastic broken off. they are eventually going to break off as well. this is not occurring to abuse of opening the doors. i have probably had the back doors opened from the inside a total of 30 times for the three years i have owned the vehicle. do not have children that ride in the back (have none), and do not transport people places from the backseat of my car very often. i have searched on line and this is a issue for thousands of other 2005 jeep cherokee owners. it is a hazard and danger if someone is unable to get out of my jeep in a emergency.

On a cold day, my husband was sitting in his 2005 jeep grand cherokee with the defrosters on. he heard a pop and saw the windshield crack from left to right. the car was not moving and nothing had hit the windshield. there had not been a chip or crack before this happened. the windshield cracked for no apparent reason.i called chrysler to report the incident. the service rep told me that the same thing had happened to her. i was told to take it to a jeep dealersip to have it looked at, which i did. after 6 days of giving me the runaround, chrysler said that they will not pay to have it repaired because it is out of warranty.i looked on the internet and saw that other people have had the same problem. the dealership told me that they had just had a jeep with the same problem the previous week. a second service rep at chrysler had told me that she had the same problem. it obviously was not an isolated incident.

Summary: latches/locks/linkages: i own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo. the handle on the driver side and the front passenger door are breaking from the door panel, they are literally hanging by a thread. this is a huge problem as i can't get the doors open sometimes unless i roll the windows down and reach through. this is a huge safety concern because if in emergency we could be trapped in the vehicle. this problem started about 3 years ago and has escalated since. i don't feel as though i should be financially responsible for what seems to be a widespread problem with this vehicle. chrysler is even denying that they know of any such problem, which is absolutely ridiculous. something needs to be done about this!
12/05/201042127
Latches/locks/linkages in december 2010 at 42,000 miles our 2005 jeep grand cherokee (limited) developed a crack in the drivers' door handle housing causing the inside door handle to come loose from the inside door panel. (the door handle is set in a hole made of thin plastic that functions as a pivot hinge. once the plastic cracks then the handle just pops out of the door panel.) then in january 2011, the right rear door handle developed the same problem and this door handle also came out of the handle housing, and it can no longer be opened from inside the car. upon inspection we discovered that both the right front passenger door and rear left passenger door have developed cracks in the plastic in the same place, and will likely break soon. we note that there have been 42 identical complaints lodged on the nhtsa site involving this same problem on the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. here in florida, with frequent opportunities to run off the road into lakes or canals, this problem is extremely serious, possibly causing persons to drown in the car when unable to unlatch the door in an emergency. chrysler customer service has said they do not have a record of this issue and they do not feel that they should cover the repairs if the vehicle is out of warranty. some other persons who have reported the issue state that to repair the door handle requires a complete replacement of the side door panels at a cost of over $700 per door. it is entirely unreasonable that a car would have no workable door handles after just 5 years or 42,000 miles of use. this is not normal wear and tear, nor is it reasonable wear and tear. we rarely have back seat passengers in this vehicle. it is clearly a defective design and substandard materials. chrysler needs to recall these vehicles to correct this dangerous situation.

Two of the four interior door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are broken off and unable to open the door. this is a huge safety problem, if there were an accident it would be impossible for two of the passengers to be able to exit the vehicle. they were not broken from damaging actions, they simple have just broke from everyday use.

Last year i began noticing that plastic pieces were falling from the back cover of the interior door handles. i took the vehicle to the dealer to see if there was a recall on these vehicles since i consider that this was a safety issue. the handles are completely loose and i have to stick out my arm to open the doors from the outside. i don't even want to imagine what could happen if in an accident. the cost of repairing this is approximately $2,000 since it is necessary to purchase the interior door panel.

The driver and passenger door panel plastic mouldings surrounding and encasing the door handles has broken with pieces falling inside the door. the door panel no longer securely holds the handle mechanism and on occasion jams the handle.. these failures were not due to unusual circumstances or abuse, but rather failures occurred in normal entry and egress activity from the vehicle. no used replacement door panels can be found via used part outlets showing the extent of the problem, and oem replacement/repair costs are outrageous and is nearly $2000 (i understand these plastic mouldings are on natiional backorder). numerous identical incidents of this failure are evidently prolific as sourced by internet customer satisfaction research on the jeep cherokee as well as complaints posted with the dot/nhts. please add my most vocal and serious complaint about this obvious manufacturing defect. this obvious safety problem potentially prohibits exit from the vehicle should an accident require such action, not to mention the costs to the consumer due to a faulty product. a recall to correct this defect should be immediate and sustained for any consumer who expects to be able to open and close a vehicle door for the expected life of the vehicle.

The interior door handles, all 4, broke off, at almost the same time. there is a common manufacturers material defect, as the door handle pocket is made out a brittle plastic, and they just shattered, or cracked simply by using the interior door handle to exit the vehicle. this is dangerous because in an emergency, one would not be able to exit the vehicle if the door handle breaks off in your hand.

We own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. when the vehicle was 2 years old and at 35,000 miles the check engine light came on indicating the transmission control module. this was replaced under warranty. my husband was kind of concerned that they had the part in stock for a two year old vehicle but we had it fixed and went on. now it is three years later at 89,000 miles and the same part needs to be replaced. they want us to pay 750 to have it replaced. we filed a case with chrylser and they want us to have it diagnosed for 89.00 at their dealer and then they will discuss whether they will help pay for it or not. there are many other people on the web that have had the same issues. our car will light up all the gears when you are driving down the road and will not shift properly due to the engine not understanding what gear we are in. i do not want to have to worry that they fixed it and helped us this time but in 2-3 years we have to do this all over again for the same part. the gentleman my husband first talked to at the dealer we consulted before talking with chrysler stated that he has also replaced this same piece in his chrysler 300 twice. i have also seen on the car forums that the jeep commander is doing the same thing and there are numerous complaints out there about the 05 jeep cherokee. i would like to know why chrysler continues to put this part that is obviously not working in their vehicles. this is causing issues for the cars and i am not convinced i want another chrysler product. the gear shift should not be having parts replaced. i have been around many vehicles and never had this type of problem. i do not understand why a recall or something hasn't been done on this particular part. why would they not find a new way to do this type of gear shift that doesn't fall apart in two years of driving. this is a family vehicle. this is not a race car or even a 4wd. i just want to get help in case others are still dealing with this.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited interior door handles. 3 of my 4 handles have broken off. jeep charges $700.00 to replace this. it is a joke, considering i have used the backseat door handles maybe 15 times since i have had it since 2007. i have never heard or seen door handles on any vehicle completely break off out of no where.

Rubber/plastic piece that rides along when shifting became bunched up and and couldn't shift into park or drive. had to cut out the bunched up piece as car was in middle of road. this rubber/plastic piece is part of the shifter bezel trim that keeps dust and dirt from getting into the shifter area. nothing has been done as dealer wants $720.00 for the part plus labor!!??!!?? this is ludicrous!!!!!!

I 'am the original user of a jeep grandcherokee laredo,2005, with a 64,000 miles. the hazard is that all(4)interiors doors handles brokedown due to cheap plastic materials and because they made the door handles as an integrakl part of the complete door panel.this is a safety hazard because the door opens only from outside, putting all occupants life jeopardized.this is not something of heavy use or due to behavior of the occupants. as a fact this car was my company car so no many people was sitting in the back seat.the cost of this four panels(including the handles) is above the $2,000.00.i saw other complaints in other sites about the same problem including people who bought these suv's in europe.i can send you photos if you considered necessary and the details of the car identification numbers if you may think is necessary to continuing finding the solution of this hazard.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door panels and handles to open the doors are all broken. the dealership wants $600-700 per door to replace. this is a safety defect rendering the passengers unable to open up the doors. the chrysler corp should do a recall and fix this obvious and dangerous design/manufacturing issue. as a result of the broken door panels, the door handles will not properly open up the doors for both the front and rear passenger doors. if there is ever an accident and those doors are the only escape route, they will render the passengers trapped in the car.
