Pulling away from stop sign my vehicle lost power (stalled out). the lights for park, reverse, neutral, and drive all came on at one time. lost power for about 15 seconds then car starting moving again. this has happened a few times not just the one date listed here. this was the only time i was actually pulling out into traffic. could have caused a major wreck. sometimes it does it while driving down road and i have to pull over to turn car off. when i start it back again it runs fine for a while. ever since this has been happening my airbag light and engine light have been coming on and off all the time. about a year ago, i had to have a speed sensor changed on the transmission cause the car would not shift through gears cost me around $800 because it had to be taken to a transmission service center. are these problems all related? bought this car from a private seller (one owner) well taken care of. all maintenance was up to date when i purchased the car about 1 1 years ago. is there any recalls on any of the problems i listed here?

While driving 55mph suddenly every dashboard warnings light, ignition, radio, headlights, etc. turns on and off. engine stalls for a couple of seconds each time this occurs. the same thing happened on a number of occasions. dealer says they never heard of this problem and could not duplicate this problem when the car was in the shop. the car was at the dealer's shop on two occasions. the first time they said they couldn't find the problem and the second time they did something to the computer. the car is doing the same thing and is going back to the dealer on 2/18/13. *tr

Suddenly every dashboard warning light, a/c, headlights, etc. turns on and off. dealer recommended to remove everything from the key chain (?!) so they knew then that there is an issue with the ignition switch. it helped for a while until same thing happened february 2013, but this time engine stalled for a couple seconds. i took it to the dealer and called chrysler. chrysler said it's going to be my problem until nhtsa issues official recall. dealer will charge me $360 for a new ignition switch tomorrow. all 2006 jeep owners - if you have the same problem - don't just read this, file a complaint. looks like this is the only way to wake up chrysler. *tr

I purchased vehicle 2 weeks ago, november 115, 2012. over a period of several days, all lights on . instrument cluster light-up, gauges go crazy, loose power and ability to operate vehicle. very dangerous situation since i was on highway at highway speeds. also, headlights begin to flicker off-on at a high rate causing a dangerous situation. i have researched online and found numerous similar complaints for jeep. i went to my local jeep dealer today...no help. called jeep hotline, 800-992-1997, no help, claim they havent had a problem. this is a safety issue and jeep should stand behind their product. *tr

Starting october 2nd, 2012, my 2006 jeep grand cherokee has not been shifting gears correctly and all options on the dashboard (park, reverse, neutral, drive) will light up. the car slows at this point and i have to pull over, put it in park, and then put it in drive again; doing that seems to reset it. this issue has happened about 4 times since and it's only october 6th, 2012 now. after doing research online, this seems to be a huge problem with other jeep grand cherokees and a very scary one at that. godforbid this happened to me on the highway and wasn't able to pull over; its an accident waiting to happen. *tr

Since the day i purchased my certified used 2006 jeep grand cherokee, the interior instrument panel and dash lights have malfunctioned. the brightness flickers from low to very high, which is very distracting at night, some of the panel controls have since completely stopped working, and several times, all of the warning lights on the dash (seatbelt, airbag, check engine, etc) flash on and off while driving. this has happened at numerous speeds and times of the day. i video taped several incidents on my cell phone to prove it. took it to the dealer and they said they can't duplicate the problem and the video means nothing. it happens more often, or is more noticeable, at night. they checked it in the daytime. made no offer of any solution. *tr

While at highway speed, on the highway, vehicle stalled, lost power steering, acceleration ability, braking and lights. had to coast to the side of the road while narrowly avoiding other motorists at highway speed. this has occurred on several different occasions at speeds anywhere from 5-60 mph. very dangerous and frightening. this has been reported by thousands of other jeep owners and is eventually going to get people killed. *tr

My 2006 jeep grand cherokee continually has a problem with the entire control panel shutting down, gauges going to zero, a/c stopping, and headlights turning off when they are on. recently the vehicle stabilization lights came on and a terrible grinding noise made. this has probably happened 30 times over the past year. it usually happens in about a 5-10 second time span. this past week it stayed that way for around 15 minutes

While entering on ramp for highway jeep shuts off... no more control since no power. hit the guard rail. this stalling happen on many occasions while driving or in park. with passengers in vehicle very scary. have spent more than $4000 @ dealer @ & manufacturer involved. with no resolution...but the stress & the dissatisfaction in the american product i'd like to buy that can't be fixed. i'm convinced i'll probably never buy american again. very disappointed on how jeep corporate handled the issue & left me with vehicle with these problems & told me case closed... trade it in.

On multiple occasions, the instrument panel has stopped working completely. the lighting in both in the interior of the vehicle as well as the exterior flashes and sometimes goes out completely. multiple dealers have not been able to find a problem. it has caused near crashes before with the distraction of driving at night. the cruise control also accelerates without any warning while this occurs and the cruise must be reset by turning the car off and back on. this too has caused some near crashes as the car accelerates due to the faulty cruise control.

I had my check engine light diagnosed and found to be the esm shifter, an electronic device that connects the gear shifter to the transmission. it was said to me that this helps regulate that the transmission stays in the correct gear while driving. i have found that the transmission sticks in a certain gear even though it is not the correct gear i am driving in. i have found that i have had to pull over, put the vehicle and park so that it clears before going back in gear. i have also found that that process does not always work, when that has not worked, i would have to turn the vehicle off and back on for it to shift properly. i also had an incident that while using cruise control i was going up a hill so the cruise control kicked in to give the extra boost but it did not shift back down. i was quickly accelerating (almost to 90 in about 5 seconds) and being close to reaching 5rpms i had to turn off cruise control and shift into neutral for it to stop accelerating. due to the extended warranty i purchased it was not covered. i have talked to a few mechanics and they all have said they have replaced multiple recently. when talking to jeep headquarters, they stated that it has not been reported as a defective item. i was advised to contact nhtsa to report this in hopes that other have done so so that jeep is required to make this a recall item. from what i have heard, it has been a fairly common item that needs replacing.

Headlights and dash lights flicker when on. they will usually remain on for approximately 5 minutes before they start to flicker. at that point the headlights and dashlights will flash off and on rapidly causing oncoming traffic and the traffic in front of my vehicle to panic. the flicker occurs even when the vehicle is turned off an the light control switch is left in the on position. i have not noticed the flicker occurring while the vehicle is turned off and the light control switch is in the off position. this condition could potentially be very dangerous depending upon the timing of the occurrence. i have conducted internet research on this topic and found that many 2005-2008 jeep grand cherokee owners have had this very same problem. even more 2005 - 2008 jeep grand cherokee owners have had electronic problems in general. my particular headlight problem has been attributed to an electronical control module which would cost close to $1,000 to repair or replace. i believe this to be faulty workmanship or the use of a faulty product by jeep. the failure of an electronic control model is not the result of wear and tear. therefore, i believe this should either be admitted and replaced by jeep or made a safety recall. i appreciate your time and consideration.

Driving approx 50 mph, the jeep quit, no warning signs, no power steering. momentum got me off the road. dealership wasn't able to fix the problem. this happened in march 2011. sept 2011 i was passing a transit bus on the way to work and as i started to pull back into my own lane the jeep quit again. no warnings, it just quit. i had to coast into the front yard of someones house because i had no steering. i sat for a few minutes, started it up and drove back home. the onboard diagnostics light, esp, bas and traction control lights were on. from that point the jeep was running very badly. dealer had my jeep for 6 days and said it was a map sensor on the manifold. got the jeep back and backing out of my driveway in the middle of the road, it quit. a couple tries and it restarted. i'm very upset that this vehicle has put me in harms way on 3 separate occasions. i couldn't imagine driving on a twisting steep road and having it quit. i'm lucky i wasn't killed the day i was passing the bus. i'm not convinced the map sensor is the problem and i don't trust this vehicle. i drive a lot and transport my kids. we are all in danger in this vehicle. mainly because, it gives you absolutely no warning that it's going to quit, it just shuts down as if i shut the key off. i have only the ignition key on the keyring so i know it has nothing to do with heavy keys pulling on the ignition switch. i am not the only complaint, they are all over the web, it is an issue and someone needs to address it. this vehicle has become dangerous.

My dashboard light was flashing and clicking many time for about 2 minutes this is the 4 times this happen, i took my car 3 times before to the dealer and they do not fine anything in my car and this problem started at begining these year and my card just have 68,564 miles. i left my car last saturday 08/28/11 and they told me is not any thing in the computer, i saw online many complaints about this on the internet. i do not want samebody have a accident before chrysler find the problem with jeep grand cherokee 2006.

My 2006 jeep grand cherokee continually has a problem with the entire control panel shutting down, guages going to zero, a/c stopping, and headlights turning off when they are on. recently the vehicle stabilization lights came on and a terrible grinding noise made. this has probably happened 30 times over the past year. it usually happens in about a 5-10 second time span. this past week it stayed that way for around 15 minutes. as sounds typical, the dealership says nothing is showing up. i've had it to an independent shop and the chrysler dealership. this page is literally covered up with the same problem. why is there not enough evidence on this one site (many others contain this same complaint) to do something about this? do i just have to take it to the shop forever and spend money only to never get anyone to fix it, or do i wait until i have a horrible accident? i don't really have the money to scrap an unsafe vehicle and start over with nothing. what am i supposed to do?

Instrument panel randomly shut down while driving and lights up again. all gauges go to zero and all warning lights come on, then returns to normal.

While driving home on the interstate last night,my dash lights and my head light flash on and off and sometimes they go off and will not come back on.i have taken it to the dealership and they told me they could not find the problem, and i would have to let it get worse and it would have to happen when they were driving it to see what was wrong with it..it needs to be fixed soon before it causes a crash and someone gets hurt.

At approximately 78k miles, vehicle would occasionally start and the only system that was operational was the radio. i cleaned and inspected all connectors that i could access, and problem appeared to go away. then just after the warranty expired (80k miles) intermittent electrical issues have begun to appear. the transmission sometimes sticks in 3rd gear, the windshield wipers fail to function and when i attempt to turn them on it crashes the powertrain control module which then begins running random system errors, and the headlights sometimes turn off or fail to come on.

My dashboard lights flicker on my 2006 jeep grand cherokee while driving when i turn on the heat with the fan. there are many complaints about this on the internet discovered with a google search. i called jeep and brought it to their attention, but the person i spoke to didnt seem to interested and said nothing would be done unless nhtsa recieved enough complaints. there response seemed pretty lax for what i consider a major safety concern.

While driving down the road the dash lights will shut off and turn back on without warning. it almost seems like it shuts off but the engine stays running. the radio presets stay programmed. has only done it twice in the last month and ive owned it for 3 years. seems to do it in the extreme cold, but vehicle is fully warmed before i drive it. i usually let it run 20 minutes before i leave on days when it is really cold( usually below 32 degrees fahrenheit) all of the gauge lights shut off, the radio, interior lighting. havent noticed if exterior lighting goes off as well.

Had complained to dealership that all lights on the instrument panel will all come on and go off at the same time, and will happen several times in a row. they told me to try wiggling the key in the ignition when it happened again. on said date this happened again while i was driving, but this time my abs engaged, which stopped me in the middle of the road. luckily, i was pulling up to a stop sign anyway. however, had this happened on the interstate, i would be devastated to know what could have happened. also, it sounded as if my starter was trying to start again. i have done some research online and have found may people with the exact same issue who have tried many different things to fix the problem, but it seems as if no one has bee able to resolve the issue. the dealerships are even unable to fix the problem. how should someone proceed with an issue like this? it seems as if the government needs to step in and make chrysler do a recall to fix the problem that so many of us are having.

2006 jeep grand cherokee - all safety warning lights as well as engine lights flash on and off, rpm gauage drops, all lights around gear panel light, doesn't seem to know what gear it is in. sometimes it is just the lights on the panel flashing on and off. no codes read when taken to mechanic. put a new batter and alternator in the vehicle. problem is intermitten. may happen a few times in a row and then go away for days or weeks. lost power brakes and steering as well a few times, luckily no accidents resulted due to loss of power. you can hear a clicking noise when the panel lights are flickering on and off. this problem has been occuring for the last year and a half. i had a complete transmission service as well.

I purchased my 2006 grand cherokee in may of 2008. i started having a problem with the headlights flickering on and off and then totally going off about 3 weeks after we purchased the vehicle. we took it back to the dealership while still under warranty and they serviced it to find nothing wrong. the service person drove the vehicle at night and stated nothing happened. a couple of months later the same thing happened again, we took it to the dealership a second time, and the service person said the same thing again, nothing wrong. we go almost a year with no problems and the flickering of the head lights and interior dash starts all over again. i would hate for someone to have to die before the manufacturer decides to do something about this problem. i have a 5 year old daughter and a 17 year old son that i transport daily and i refuse to allow him to drive my vehicle because of this problem. hopefully someone will decide to take action concerning the issues with the jeep cherokee. *tr

Over the last 2 months, my 2006 jeep grand cherokee has completely shut off unexpectedly while driving. on 4 occasions. the first occasion was 9/30 (35,123 miles) i read the manual that indicated that the engine light could mean a variety of things and it suggested that if the light remained on after a couple of uses to call the dealer. the light went off after two cycles. it occurred 3 weeks later. i made an appointment at a jeep dealer to correct the problem. the 3rd time it shut of was on the way to the dealer to have it checked. the vehicle was checked by a dealer who could not offer any explanation for the problem. the 4th occasion was on thanksgiving day.) just prior to the car completely shutting down, i heard an unusual sound under the hood, all gauges failed, and i lost all power causing the car to stop. this was extremely dangerous with three of the occasions occurring at intersection as i was pulling out. fortunately i was able to drift off the side of the road. after drifting off the road and shutting the car off and re-starting the car it would run normally although the engine light remained on. after taking it to the dealer i was told that the problem could not be replicated and nothing could be done. i explained that the problem was very dangerous the dealer said that perhaps if the service tech could drive the vehicle the problem could be diagnosed. the vehicle was left at the dealer for 4 days but the tech could not replicate the problem. the dealer offered no explanation for this extremely dangerous problem. i am now reluctant to drive the vehicle and my wife refuses to drive it for fear it will shut off and cause an accident. the problem again occurred on thanksgiving day. i immediately called the dealer again and explained that it had occurred again. i was told to they were very busy on friday and that i should bring the vehicle in on monday. help i have a vehicle that i cannot safely drive. *tr

Purchased 2006 jeep grand cherokee new. within first 6 months have been taking it bake to the dealer for intermittent lack/stalling. this happens while driving at different speeds and mostly making slight turns or when i begin to turn as well as up and down hill. this has been going on for the last 2 yrs,but most recently has happened alot more offend. i have taken it to the dealer with no result each time. within the last 2 weeks is has stalled at least 7 times. 9/27/08 i was injured from slamming the breaks and fighting the steering to avoid a head on collision at an intersection while starting to make a turn. i did take it to the dealer and again with no result. the day i dropped it off at the dealer it shut down in their lot. i was told that this would have been recorded in the codes, but they told me they found nothing. the next day it stalled while dropping my son off at school. he was with me when i was injured so i can prove it does happen. i did call the dealer back and that was 3 days ago. they will not return my phone call let alone honor my warranty. this car is not safe.*tr

We bought an 04' jeep grand cherokee at jeep chrysler dodge of warwick, the service engine light kept coming on. we took it down for service and they said it was the gas cap. the light still came on and had a hard time starting. we traded it in at the same place 1 month later for an 06 jeep with 15,000 miles on it. shortly after this purchase the 4 wheel drive started making horrible noises. we took it for service and they said that it was supposed to make that noise. after that the battery died and they towed it there and replaced the battery. now we have problems with the jeep stalling out when we are parked or at an idle. the front passenger side door has came loose from the weld breaking. now it is hitting the front quarter panel and is chipping paint. all four doors are coming away from the welds causing a safety hazard to all of the passengers. we brought it down for the dealer to look at the doors and they kept putting us of because they said they did not have a loner car, or that the manager was not there, or that there body shop was not available. now they say that we never brought it down to show them. every time we brought it to them they never put it in the shop and made excuses for all of the problems. they never put in there computer that we came to them, with these problems and deny that we had any. the one time when they replaced the battery we picked it up with almost 150 extra miles on it. we have been extremely unhappy with the dealers service and the quality of the vehicle itself. *jb

Previous reference # 10190692 today with no warning while driving my car at approx 1:00 pm my car was once again uncontrolable and the steering jerked me to the left which caused me to be in another lane and i was almost involved in a head on collision with an oncoming vehicle. also, once again my dash lights were completely out which inlcuded my speedometer, odometer, temp & fuel - everything was black & i had no turn signals and my air conditioner would not blow any air at all - the only thing that worked was the radio and my power windows. once again i immediately contacted the dealership and they came out and towed my vehicle to buchanan auto park. i've since then spoke with chrysler and they are looking into a replacement vehicle and i've been in contact with the attorney generals office and they are also going to try to help me get out of this vehicle. i was only traveling approx 15 miles an hour in lunch hour traffic in hagerstown, md 21740. i explained before that if i were on the interstate going 50 + mph i feel very confident that the outcome would be very worse and myself, my family and other innocent drivers could be injured. i really think that this needs checked into. i fear for my safety, my families safety and othre innocent drivers.

Purchased new jeep grand cherokee in may 2006. the problem started almost immediately and continue. , dealership could not find or fix the problem. the vehicle lost engine power while driving, resulting in no steering or brakes. this happened every few days, without warning, most recently at speed of 50 mph, causing me to have to manually, with much difficulty, steered off road into field to avoid a collision with other vehicles. this was extremely dangerous, i could only imagine if it happened on an expressway during heavy traffic how many people would be killed. the local dealership always stated they could not duplicate problem, and asked me to keep driving until it happened again, then bring the car back in. this could not go on! someone or many people were going to be killed because of this dangerous vehicle, but i have to have something to drive. please help. *ak

2006 grand cherokee ignition switched off when brakes were applied. *ts while driving at highway speeds the vehicle ignition suddenly shut off when the brake was applied. the consumer believes the problem was the result of the location of the ignition switch. it was only on inch above the consumer's knee cap when his foot was on the throttle. when he lifted his foot off the throttle to apply the brake his knee would touch the key and the ignition would shut off. the vehicle was a rental. *nm

Rented 2006 jeep cherokee at airport. during two stops at intersections i reached to switch radio stations and accidentally and lightly brushed the keys in the ignition. they switched to acc and the vehicle turned off. when i say lightly brushed i mean just that. i wasn't even aware of what had happened until the second incident. two things appear defective: the placement of the ignition and the fact that just a light touch turns the key off. had i done that while driving, the car would have immediately been inoperable and a dangerous situation would have occurred. *nm

I read about the recall on the 2007 wrangler and nitros. it sounded like the same problem. i had loss of engine power several times, similar to running out of gasoline. most times it would not stall, but if at slow speeds or at a stop the engine would completely quit. one turn of the key would start it up again. now that i saw similar symptoms being recalled for another jeep i wanted to file a formal notice of the problem before i or another person ended up stalling at a traffic light and getting hurt. please note that the incident date below is when i first had a full stall.*ak

While driving a rented 2006 jeep grand cherokee on an interstate highway, the engine stopped running. i was able to steer the vehicle to the shoulder and restart the engine. i drove cautiously without further incidents. on the return trip on a state highway, the engine unexpectedly stopped. again, i safely steered the vehicle to the shoulder and restarted the engine. this time, i realized that moving my right leg while driving, my right knee had hit the key and moved it to the off position. both incidents did not result in an accident since the roadway was empty of other vehicles. *jb

2006 grand cherokee engine shuts down when the driver gently grazes the ignition switch. *kb the ignition switch is located low on the vehicle's dashboard rather than on the vehicle's steering column, where is has been located on previous models. the switch's new location resulted in frequent contact with the driver's knee, especially when the driver is moving his or her foot from the throttle to the brake. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at various speeds the ignition switch came off 4 times while driving due to light contact from contact's right knee. both the dealer and manufacturer were contacted. updated 05/16/2006 - a complaint was registered with daimler/chrysler, and contact met with the general manager of the dealership. the service department at the dealership already knew about the problem. the service manager told the general manger that the problem was caused by key chains. however, the contact had removed the key from the key chain and still experienced the problem. since the vehicle was inoperative the contact had to trade it in and experienced a huge financial loss. *ak *nm

This concerns an unsafe design of suv. i rented a 2006 jeep cherokee in jan. 2006 from avis rental car company. i am a frequent renter and rent a wide variety of autos. i was driving in heavy traffic when the jeep all of a sudden would not accelerate. being a very experienced driver i looked at the rpm gauge and noticed that the rpm was on 0

I bought my 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4 used at 40,000 a year ago this month. shortly after owning it it started stalling while in motion or stopped in gear such as a traffic light. when sitting still, coasting and slowing down, the vehicle would die. the instrument panel did not light up and everything seemed normal until i took my foot off the brake to accelerate or just accelerated from a coast (such as a school zone slowly moving traffic), then i would realize the car had stalled. if i was on a hill going up the car would take off backwards. dies turning into parking lots, etc. i loose power steering. the brakes stopped me if i applied them. however, if i was in the forward moving position, i would just throw it in neutral and re-start the engine without problem. this concerned me, because i buy my vehicles used, i did not know if dirty injectors and throttle body was causing carbon residue to clog the injectors so i had it all cleaned. that did not fix the problem. i started researching on this site and spoke to the guys that do my service. the researched and found a notice about safety. i went to jeep website and found that there was such a notice about the brake system failure but no recall. several weeks later i received a recall notice and 2 computer flash updates were needed. this fixed my problem, at least since late november 2007. *tr

Dealer carl burger dodge and chrysler is aware of a defective 4wd warning light (chrysler service bulletin no. 21-014-06 rev a dated nov. 2, 2006), that when i brought my vehicle in to service on december 12, 2007, they demanded to charge me $75.00 (which i actually paid). i objected and raised the issue with both the service advisor and the service manager. they claimed because my mileage was slightly beyond 36,000 miles (37,912 miles to be exact), they had no obligation to diagnose and correct a known manufacturer's defect. this is wrong as a matter of law. *tr
