AQ10001CHRYSLER GROUP LLC11/18/2010Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened.

Just concerned about the interior door handles breaking. the front 2 are both cracked and pieces falling out leading to the door handles failing if emergency exit required.

I stepped on the brake and put the car into reverse. i backed out of a parking space at a taco bell. i did not have my foot on the accelerator. the interlock required my foot to be on the brake. i move the vehicle with only the power supplied with the vehicle at idle (500 rpm). i brought my vehicle to a complete stop with increased brake pressure. i looked to the right where i intended to exit the parking lot. i moved the shift lever to drive. the car unexpectedly accelerated across the parking lot. i still had my foot on the brake. the car violently jumped from a standing start to an extimated15 mph, smashing into the back of another parked car, driving the front of that car over a curb, into a brick entry pillar. i applied maximum braking pressure after my car had moved about 10-15 feet or about halfway across the parking lot. the acceleration was so rapid there was insufficient time to react and stop in such a short distance. i am not senile. i am a skilled driver who has never had a reportable accident in 40 years of driving. i am a safe driver who has not had a traffic ticket in an estimated 38 years. i have taught driver's education. i am very knowledgable with the safe operation of this vehicle after having owned an earlier model. this was not an accident. it was a complete vehicle failure. my car has both the brake interlock and the wider seperation between the brake and accelerator petals ... previous chrysler/jeep fixes. i suspect this problem might be electrical. the battery had failed and had been replaced only minutes earlier. my foot never touched the accelerator, it remained on the brake throughout this entire incident. i am aware of both complaints of driver error and numerous, unexplained reports. this report is simple ... some kind of mechanical failure.

At the time of this complaint three of four of the door handles on my 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo have broken off and are unusable. the plastic handles and the supporting door frames are all cracking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the dealer just told me that the warranty may not covered because the

I just recently purchased a 2006 jeep grand cherokee for over $14,000. within the first month before i have even made my first payment 3 of the 4 interior door handles have broken. i went back to the dealer and was told this is an issue that has to be taken up with the manufacturer. after coming home and doing research on the internet i have seen endless complaints of this happening, but yet nothing has been done to correct this safety hazard by chrysler. imagine for a moment your in an accident and are unable to open your car door to free yourself, or even worse your child. i cannot imagine this is an issue that chrysler would not take care of. for all three handles to break at once is unbeivable and for chrysler to feel they do not owe the consumer a recall to rectify this situation is mind boggling. i personally have called and voiced my opinion and was told to fix it myself. believe me i will be going to my lawyer in the morning to see what needs to be done to file a class action suit against chrysler and to also have documentation that i have voiced my concern about this safety hazard to no avail.

All door handles inside vehicle are broke. you cannot open the vehicle unless you roll window down and open door from the outside. this is a safey issue. if there is no power to vehicle to roll window down, you will be stuck in the vehicle. in an emergency situation, you will not be able to exit vehicle. several complaints from 2003-2008 filed about same issue from multiple models. a recall needs to be issued.

Door handles on both front driver and passenger sides have cracked and if these break, have no way to exit the vehicle. this seems to be a safety issue and jeep will not honor it.

All 4 interior door handles are broken. one can no longer be opened from the inside. the other 3 are dangling and are about to break.
03/01/201270000
The interior door handle on the drivers side front started to get hair line cracks in it. it is cracking more and more with use. at some point the handle will come apart and i will not be able to get out of my car. i asked the dealer about a repair and they want $800.00 to replace the whole door panel. it appears this will happen with the other doors as well. there are after market repair kits, but after researching and finding that this is a cronic problem with the handles, i believe jeep should replace or repair them for free.
04/12/201298000
Interior passenger door handle broke off - within one week's time - noticed all remaining doorhandles were cracking and will break off shortly. no excessive wear and tear has caused this - shows defective parts due to the fact that all have become cracked/broken at the same time. two of the door handles get very little use, so it is not due to excessive or abusive use. this is a safety hazard - in case of an accident, my son would be unable to exit the back of the vehicle due to broken handles!!!!
04/12/201260000
Driver's door interior handle housing broken rendering door handle inoperative. cannot open door in normal operation and is a hazard in an emergency. jeep is unwilling to fix defective parts and states that the entire door panel has to be replaced at a cost over $700/ea., but the parts are on national backorder. doing a quick search brings up numerous complaints about the same problem with no clear solution. i am now concerned that the other doors will fail soon.

Broken interior door handles- they are chipping off around the handle causing the handles to fall inside the door and are unable to open the doors. on the drivers door, the plasic supporting the interior door handle has broken leaving the handle unmounted. it is not covered under warranty and they are approxiately 400.00 to 500.00 a panel and every one of the handles in my vehicle are like this. this is an obvious safety hazard. i contacted jeep at 1-800-521-9922 and filed a case and they have declined to help me in any way stating it is wear and tear. i have owned may vehicles and never have i ever had a problem with any other of the handles on my vehicles. i have a 1988 ford truck that the door handles work fine and are not broken. this is an obvious defect on these vehicles and a recall should be done...especially since it is not just one door handle it is all of them. thanks for your help.

Interior door handle drivers side door does not open door. the dealer tells me the whole door panel has to be replaced. cost is $700 just for the panel. this is a problem that seems to happen to a lot of jeep owners.

I have a 2006 jeep cherokee laredo and 3 out of 4 interior door handles are completely broken. i even have an extended warranty that is supposed to cover everything but was told by the dealership that trim is not covered. how are interior door handles considered trim? i was told that the entire door panel would have to be replaced at $400.00 each. this is not a cosmetic issue but a safety issue. the doors will not open from the inside. i am very afraid of getting into a car crash and my children not being able to exit the vehicle. i have read many, many stories of the exact same problem with these door handles. there should be a recall by daimlerchrysler.

I have had to replace the window regulator in my rr window three times so far and the lr one just broke. jeep is saying it isn't under recall and offer no help to replace it. the fee to replace the crappy plastic piece is $50 if i manage to rip apart my car door or $185 if jeep does it. i know i'm not alone since i've looked this particular item and model up several times. here is a forum of other peeved jeep owners: http://www.denlorstools.com/autoblog/2009/02/jeep-liberty-power-window-problems-diy-tips/

All four interior door opening handles breaking/failing: 1 rear door totally inoperable. ***this is a dangerous safety issue - if handles break or are inoperable in certain emergency situations, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing serious injury or death!*** manufacturer charge to replace/repair handles is prohibitively expensive: in my case, the cost of eight (8) monthly car payments! manufacturer safety recall warranted!

The plastic component that houses the interior door handle has cracked, with pieces falling out. now on the right side rear door the handle has fallen out because the plastic has completely failed. the other three plastic pieces are also all cracking with handles already getting loose. if there were an emegency situation, it is not possible to exit vehicle via the rear door. i am afraid that in due time the other handles will fall out.

The interior door plastic that holds the door handle has cracked and broken causing the parts to fall, causing the door to be only opened from the out site. this is a serious safety issue. a person on the inside of the car can not open the door unless you roll down the window and open from the out side. it appears this has happening with this vechicle on a large scale. this has occured on 3 of the 4 doors. the dealers want 600 to 700 dollars to repair each door. looks like the plastic to make the panels was defective. i have never seen this happen before or even heard of it until i started looking on line. the first auto i owned was in 1966, i have retained most of the auto i've owned at least 8 to 10 years from time of purchase and never have i seen anything like this. i'm afraid to drive the jeep because this issue.

Three of the four (the 4th is shattered) door handles in my jeep are cracked, ready to break anytime. the passenger side one is completely cracked and broken hanging on by a thread. i'm afraid soon i'm going to have to roll down the window just to get out of the jeep. this is a safety hazard, i can only hope i'm not involved in an accident and that i won't be able to open the door due to this malfunction. i have noticed during my searches that there are hundreds of complaints with this issue, how can it be that there is no recall yet? please hear this outcry, i cannot afford to pay $500-$700 per door to get it fixed. i feel cheated by jeep/chrysler they must be held liable for this issue, we the customers have paid a lot of money for our vehicle. please help!

I have a 2006 jeep grand cherokee with 4 bad door handles. interior doors the plastic frame around the handles is broken on all 4 doors, door handles become flimsey with no support causing a severe safety issue when trying to open a door. in an accident, fire, anytime the door needs opened, there is a possibility for failure when the handle breaks. it had already failed to open once. i am afraid to have my grandchildren ride in my car because if they needed to get out in a hurry, they could be stuck or worst killed. dealer say's no recall and $800.00 a panel to replace. ridiculous. there are complaints and blogs all over the net for the same thing. when is someone going to make

I have a 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo. i was stopped at a stop light, with my foot firmly on the brake. i am sure of this detail because if the brake is not firmly pressed, my car shakes as though it will turn off. so as i am sitting at the light, my car accelerated and moved about 6 inches. luckily i was not too close to the car in front of me, but any closer and i would have rear ended the car. i called my local jeep/dodge dealer to ask of there were any recalls or any thing i should know regarding my vehicle and this situation. the employee, completely rude, asked me if i was talking to someone in my car and moved my foot of the pedal. he basically told me i was distracted, and since it was 3 p.m. on a friday afternoon, i should wait and see if it happens again, then i could bring it in if i wanted to. i have 4 small children and there are millions of innocent children on the road everyday. you would think that this would be a more serious warning...especially given the situation with toyota.

3 of 4 door panels with door handle to get out of vehicle has broken in same place. driver has to get out of car to open the 3 doors. this is a safety issue because no one can get out of the car execpt the driver. this is caused most likely due to the thin plastic holding the door mechanism. also if company (jeep) did not use uv protected plastic the sun and hi temperatures in texas may have contributed to the engineering flaw. the plastic piece holds the entire handle in the door and should have used a stifner to supprot it properly. as is if accident was to happen passengers would be stuck in vehicle.
