ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Originally having issues slowing down going around corners and up a steep incline. felt like vehicle was staying in higher gear, you could down shift it manually. at that time there were no codes present in the system. then last year in august 2011 we did a cross county trip (7000 miles) vehicle would stall at both low speed and high speeds, not every day. sometimes vehicle would restart itself and others the key had to be removed and reinserted, but most times not. the weather did not seem to be a factor. upon return vehicle had approx 45,000 miles, codes retreived from vehicle were multiple. active codes: b2105, c121c pending code: p0524 stored codes p0129, p0688, p0884. at 35,000 miles new oem spark plugs and water pump (due to coolant leak) with new antifreeze. vehicle is serviced regularly every 3,000 miles since new. since 45,000 miles all related circuits and components have been inspected and checked for proper operation. new crank sensor and electrical ignition switch. code b2105 keeps recurring even without stall. all wiring connections and grounds have been cleaned and checked, new battery at 36,000. had vehicle to dealer and they said they may not be able to find problem. we have stopped driving this vehicle even though we are still paying for it because we feel that it is not safe. my husband has 40 years as certified automotive mechanic and is very frustrated with this vehicle. *tr

Engine stalling during deceleration due to oem spark plugs thus no power steering or power brakes when it is needed the most. champion spark plugs has 2 different spark plugs with same part number re14mcc4. this is the chrysler oem supplier ans part number for hemi engine spark plugs through 2007. one of the two spark plugs is incompatible with the hemi engine and leads to stalling while decelerating. the consumer has no information on which one to use. national automotive parts distributors have not been made aware of the difference. chrysler has an internal memo (star case) that documents the issue but has not released it to the public. i was shown the memo but was not allowed to have a copy. no tsbs exists. no recall either. nhtsa told me they do not handle this. they advised me to contact the ftc. the ftc took my complaint but referred me to the dot as they were concerned for consumer safety. i have side by side pictures of the 2 spark plugs with the same part number and would be willing to supply them. i also have one of each plug in my possession. there is visual differences. this issue occurred in a 2007 jeep grand cherokee with the hemi engine. it started to stall while decelerating after the 60,000 mile service interval. did champion change manufacturing process? did chrysler request a change due to a discovered issue after production? if it was champions fault one would think that chrysler would issue a tsb as they would have no responsibility for the issue. since they are not releasing the info are they the ones that requested the change? the correct spark plugs were changes and the issue has not occurred since. *tr

 1. my 2007 jeep grand cherokee (5.7 hemi; 64k miles) was due for a tune up. i purchased replacement spark plugs that were recommended from a local auto parts retailer and changed them. 2. subsequently the vehicle began to stall frequently while driving (approx 5 times in 25 miles traveled). this happened while driving at highway speeds, at stoplights and when making left hand turns. 3. vehicle was taken to dealer for service as engine light had also been on during entire time. dealer worked on trying to find problem for 3 weeks. after consulting a chrysler engineer they finally discovered that the aftermarket platinum tip spark plugs were causing interference with the vehicle powertrain control module and causing the engine to stall. dealer replaced the spark plugs and the problem was corrected. i went back to my parts supplier and they had never heard of this problem before. i also notified chrysler of my complaint that consumers and parts supply retailers should be made aware of this parts incompatibility issue that they are obviously aware of because it is a potentially serious safety hazard. they have not responded to me.

I have been having a stalling problem for a couple months now. when i am at a stop sign or red light, my car will start to idle very low and then completely die. it will restart when i put it in park and turn the key again. the next time i try to start my car after it stalls, it usually takes about 10 seconds for it to start when turning the key. my car has done this 5 times now. it happens about once a week. my car also idles very low, very often when i am stopped. it does not stall everytime though. everytime it happens i take it directly to the dealership. the dealership keeps telling me nothing is wrong with my vehicle, and they don't know why it would be dying when stopped. *tr

Update of nhtsa odi complaint # 10203222 concerning 2007 jeep grand cherokee with 3.0l crd diesel engine and electronic throttle control: vehicle was towed to selling dealer on 9/24/07. on 10/2/07 selling dealer technician changed crankshaft position sensor per manufacturer tsb but vehicle engine still would not start. on 10/4/07 technician changed fuel filter which enabled engine to start and run. technician then confirmed correct operation of engine, cleared error codes from powertrain management computer system, and test drove vehicle for 10 miles and observed no problems. vehicle was returned to consumer and re-entered service on 10/4/07. investigation and laboratory analysis of fuel filter that was removed from vehicle are pending. *tr

Without warning while driving 2007 jeep grand cherokee with crd (common rail diesel) engine with about 4,000 miles on odometer under light load in light traffic with about 3/4 tank of fuel on a hilly rural highway at about 50 mph the mil (check engine light) turned on and within a second or so, if not simultaneously, the red error light indicating malfunction in the electronic throttle control system illuminated and began flashing. driver immediately slowed to 30 to 35 mph, activated emergency flashers, and changed route to return vehicle home, at that point about a 15 mile trip on a combination of hilly rural highways and suburban arterial roads. about 10 miles later while climbing a hill in a blind curve on a rural highway with no shoulder in moderate traffic at about 35 mph the engine stalled bringing vehicle to halt. in the shoulderless blind curve there was neither visibility nor room for following traffic to pass, thus creating an extremely dangerous condition. driver was able to restart vehicle but it then seemed to operate in limp home mode and did not seem able to move faster than about 20 to 25 mph before stalling again. vehicle then stalled repeatedly in the last 5 or so miles back to home on hilly rural highway in moderate traffic, and restarting attempts became progressively more difficult. by the time vehicle was returned to owner's property the engine would not start except to run for a few seconds before shutting off, and vehicle having become completely undriveable then had to be pushed to a safe place to await tow to selling dealer for service. driver contacted selling dealers service department to report problem, and service appointment and tow to selling dealer are pending. *tr

The day after i bought the brand new 2007 jeep grand cherokee diesel, i unlocked the doors with the key fob, opened a couple of the doors and loaded my luggage, then i did the key sequence on the keyfob (lock+panic) to turn off the beep when you lock the car. after all this i tried to start it (correct starting procedure - wait for glow light to go out) and the starter cranked the engine with no firing at all. i repeat and wait 5 times over about 5 minutes, it failed to start each time. finally after i have waited about 2 more minutes, i tried again and it fired right up like it is supposed to. i am concerned the car could fail to start again. updated 01-16-08. *kb

Whilst driving my jeep grand cherokee (equipped with the mercedes benz common rail diesel (crd) 3.0 l engine) on i-410 at highway speed, the engine suddenly stopped, without any warning. this also made the power brakes and power steering inoperative. today, the dealer tells me that this is caused by a faulty crankshaft position indicator sensor and is a fairly common occurance. i should think this is a design flaw and should be corrected by the mfg.

Vehicle purchased july 2007. began stalling at 35,000 miles in october 2009. vehicle stalls at speeds between 0 and 65 mph. stalling leaves vehicle inoperable in traffic opening the opportunity to be rear ended, struck broadside when turning across traffic, and fails to restart in some cases. vehicle stalls mid turn leaving driver without power steering, brakes, or signals functioning for upwards of 15 minutes. other times is starts back up. vehicle has been out of service by krebs dodge chrysler jeep for 142 days as of this writing as the following parts have been replaced without successful repair: pcm, forward control module, engine wiring harness, power modules (many), primary fuse block, wiring harnesses in cabin, airbag control module, abs module, transmission cooler lines, ignition switch, and ignition module. service department manager and other service department front desk personnel state vehicle cannot be repaired, official chrysler technician sent and could also not repair this vehicle. the safety of every person in this vehicle is in risk of danger if it is used. vehicle last returned to us and stalled 14 times within 150 miles while in our possession. vehicle cannot run more than 22 miles without stalling randomly. vehicle's latest symptom is failure to restart after stalling and all of the warning lights on the dashboard being lit (abs, airbag, brake, traction control, etc) signifying failure in multiple safety critical systems.

I own a new 2007 jeep grand cherokee that i had for two weeks with approximately 500 miles on it. a couple of days after purchase i called the dealer to tell them that the engine service light was on. they said no to bring vehicle to dealer as it was probably due to a loose gas cap, and would go away in a couple of days. however, this week when driving on the highway at 70 mph the jeep stalled. the fuel gauge dropped to empty from 3/4 full, and there was no acceleration on the vehicle. fortunately i was able to coast to the far shoulder of the road. i took the key out and restarted the engine, and the full guage went back up to 3/4 full and i was able to resume driving. i brought it to the dealer and they were unable to replicate the problem....they said the vehicle is fine. the reset the computer so the engine light went off. the next day after bringing it home from the dealer, the engine light came on again and i am bringing it back in next week. i have already contacted a lemon law attorney as i fully expect the problem to happen again. i saw an article that you were conducting an investigation on this problem, and wanted to add my name to the list as this stalling problem is extremely dangerous. i feel very fortunate that i did not crash after losing power at 70 mph on a crowded highway. thank you for any help you can provide.*ak

After driving about 40 miles on highway, then turning onto local streets, all warning lights on dashboard lit up, message board flashed transmission overtemp warning, then check gauges warning. the vehicle went into limp home mode, no gauges worked, including speedometer. once shut off, vehicle took a while before it would start again. had vehicle towed to dealer. dealer could not replicate or diagnose problem. i believe this is related to the crankshaft positioning sensor problem that prompted a recent recall of this engine by mercedes benz (3l crd engine). chrysler would not acknowledge this problem. *tr

Engine stalled while driving, and then would not restart. fortunately i was going slowly approaching a traffic light or the stall could have lead to a collision. my 11 month old son was with me, and then we were stuck blocking traffic at one of the busiest intersections in town. i have heard this is a problem with my vehicle, the 2007 jeep grand cherokee crd. we could have been killed had this happened on the highway. *tr

I have a 2007 jeep grand cherokee diesel. bought new, nov. 07. at about 28k miles, on may 24, noxious fumes started coming through the a/c vents while idling, after coming to a stop. took to dealer. they had it for 3 days, got a run around, they said chrysler tech line said it was normal, told me to set the a/c system on recirculation. service manager admits he smelled it but they couldn't find the problem. called chrysler tech line, they said the same thing also that i should take it to a dealer with better technicians. problem is getting worse, stinks, causes eye sting. probably exhaust fumes, smells like a natural gas leak only worse! *tr
