Where to begin? my airbag light has been coming on for months while driving. i took it to a chrysler dealership 6 months ago & was charged $100 for them to tell me they didn't know what was wrong. about a month ago, while driving on the highway, my headlights went out, came back on, went out again, and finally i hit my high beams and they stayed on. my engine uses about 2 quarts of oil per week. i have parked on clean surfaces & there is no oil leaking, but it is going somewhere. i can hear a ticking noise coming from the engine area. i called chrysler's toll-free number today after the headlights went out again, and was informed that my jeep is under recall for the air bag module, and maybe that is what is causing the lights to go out. this makes no sense to me that one would have anything to do with the other. i told them that i have seen other complaints about the headlights, but they stated that they've had no complaints. i have also replaced front tires three times in the past year for wear on the outside edge. i've had the jeep aligned, tires rotated as they should be, and they just keep balding on the outer edge. the service tech said that jeeps eat through tires because of the wheel base? this car has all but eaten up most of my income. it is constantly having issues, and i get nowhere with chrysler. *tr

My friend and i were driving to the movie theater in her 2002 jeep liberty, when we were stopped at a stop light. her car made a beeping noise, which was very unusual because it has never ever done that in the 5 years she has driven it, and then the word air bag popped up on her car's dashboard. we both looked at each other with very confused expressions and then without any warning the driver side front airbag exploded in both our faces. we were extremely lucky that we were stopped at a stop light and neither of our faces were close enough to the steering wheel to get seriously injured, but this was extremely alarming and shocking for both of us. my friend, the driver, has red marks from impact on her left thigh and upper chest. i am completely outraged by this! i have done my research in this particular defect happening in other 2001-2004 jeep liberty vehicles, and apparently this same exact problem has the possibility of affecting as many as 386,873 people. so the real question is: why have they not been recalled?!?!?!?!? what if my friend and i had been driving at 70+ mph on the highway?!?!? what if we had been on a crowded, busy street when this happened?!?! people could have been seriously injured - or even worse, they could have been killed!! this is not okay for a car to do this!!!! *tr

Just purchased vehicle, told by local dealer in early july that there was a recall on lower ball joints, with a national back order on parts, after completing repair 9/24, they stated it needs new steering knuckles at $1094.00. on tuesday 9/25 said it was ready to pick up, i asked if they solved the air bag light being on, they said it would be a few more days. they called this morning (9/28) and said they can not give me the vehicle back because the ball joints are now falling out. i asked since i drove it in, why after you recall repair is it not drive able? they said safety reasons. so now i have a jeep being held hostage, with still no answer for the air bag light to be on. something is wrong with these models. *tr

The air bag warning light comes on and off at random times while driving, it started about three weeks ago. this just happens at random its on for 50 seconds then goes off and then back on again and then off and sometimes it does this for awhile and some times just a few times and then doesn't do it again for a couple of days. this happens at any speed the car is going. it's just totally random. *tr

Upon starting the jeep, the air bag light went off then came back on and stayed on until the jeep was turned off. this was a short 10 minute trip - maybe 5 miles. this happened again the next day (today). i made one other trip in between where this did not happen. this has never happened before. occasionally the overhead lights will flash on/off as well. i had the battery harness replaced within the last year. not sure if that is related or not. *tr

The air bag light on the vehicle began to illuminate intermittently. checked internet for possible causes, and saw nhtsa investigation is underway due to random air bag deployments on 2002-2003 jeep liberty due to possible defective electronic component. intermittent air bag light is associated with random air bag deployment in some cases. intermittent air bag light appears to be associated with heat, as light has illuminated only after warm up on warm (above 70) days, and does not illuminate if it is cool (60 or below) or if it rains. contacted chrysler corporate, they suggested i contact dealership. dealerships wants $100 just to attempt diagnosis of issue, and neither jeep corporate nor two different dealerships take responsibility for product. one dealership very vocal about being concerned with getting paid diagnosis fee, either by me or by chrysler corporate if recall initiated. vehicle has been very trouble-prone, with several recalls to date, along with thousands of dollars of owner paid-for repairs in addition to recalls, with both repairs and recalls well above average. i would be willing to have vehicle inspected/investigated by nhtsa.

Within the last month upon starting my jeep & sometimes while driving it, the airbag light comes on. the airbag has not deployed, but the light comes on periodically. there has been an investigation into the airbags on jeep liberties, but no recall as of yet, so my only option is to pay to have it diagnosed & repaired. if the bag deploys it surely would cause injury or even wrecks if it's unexpected!

The air bag warning light in our 2002 jeep liberty comes on intermittently for no apparent reason. we have experienced recurring incidents of this problem since early 2011. we have been unable to correlate any particular conditions or situations that may trigger these air bag warning light events. we have had an auto maintenance facility look for any diagnostic alarms or alerts via diagnostic computer evaluation and their feedback was that there is no apparent or obvious reason for the air bag light to turn on. our concern with this situation is that it may be an indication of a potential airbag defect such as the one currently under investigation by the nhtsa related to random deployment of the airbags in 2002 jeep liberty vehicles. we are the original owners of this vehicle. thank you.

August 08, bought my 02 liberty. took about 1.5 years to drive it because of an accident - that's why i bought the liberty. about 1 year later the idle air control valve went out, had to replace it. there's been other, minor things, like when accelerating, feels like someone bumped into me. sometimes are worse than others. often feel a vibration. within months of being 1 year of replacing the iav, began to get extremely bad gas mileage - about 187m to a tank. not sure why. replaced the spark plugs, did a lof, inspection, etc.. almost exactly 1 year from replacing the iav, check engine light came on. was on for 1-1.5 days. i decided not use it until i could get it to the mechanic. next morning, was going to the store & the light was off! but when i pulled into a parking space, it died. this sort of thing's happened before, db cluster being faulty. other things [vacuum seal leak, etc] never prompted the lights on. had to replace the iav again & it ran fine. recently, been getting that kicking feeling & like my car is running rough. today, i noticed the airbag light was stuck on. checked the manual, it said to have the airbag system checked. i was nervous about driving - had an odd feeling the airbag would deploy - moved my seat back just in case. since the accident, i get anxiety over these things. luckily, no deployment. got it home, turned it off, waited, turned it on, waited a few seconds and the light turned off this time. went straight to my computer only to find these recalls and investigations - one being the steering - last week had a nerve-wracking experience, my car began to swerve turning left onto the freeway, it was raining, so, i slowly merged. wasn't until it straightened out that it began to swerve, almost like losing control, didn't feel like a slip. but i just assumed it was. also, the seat belts don't seem to stay click in at times.

After seeing multiple stories regarding the airbags in jeep liberties randomly going off, i noticed that most of the incidents occurred after the owners mentioned seeing the airbag light on dashboard going on off periodically. although the airbags in our jeep liberty have not gone off unexpectedly, we have been experiencing the airbag warning light going on and off for at least a year. when brought into dealership they could not explain why light was going on and off. i am concerned about driving this jeep liberty with the potential that it could go off. i figured notifying the safety commission was the best thing to do.

My son was driving a 2002 jeep liberty when the steering wheel jammed on him approaching a curve he slammed the brakes but the vehicle kept skidding until it invaded the other side of the road hit a tree(if not for the tree he would have fallen off the mountain side!!). in no moment did the air bags activate. about 3 or 4 days later i received a safety recall notice f23 - lower ball joints that indicated the ball joints could corrode & separate resulting in a loss of the steering control. i got in contact with the company where they ask for pictures of the accident (which i e-mailed to them) but cannot repair the vehicle (or will forfeit any claims they say)therefore leaving me with no transportation and still having to pay the bank the car loan. i asked the daimler chrysler rep if there was some kind of car assistance program in a couple of occasions and have received no reply plus i have been informed that an appraisal will be done in about 2 weeks from now. is there anyway this process can be sped up or aren't they suppose to lend me a vehicle until this is resolved? *jb

I lost control of the vehicle two days after purchase in the rain while trying to make a right hand turn. the vehicle went straight through the intersection, up and over the curb and into someones front yard. reported to the dealership. two months later i had my second experience that also happened in the rain. i was trying to come to a stop at a stop sign and could not stop the car. at this time i took the car back to the dealership and they said there was nothing found. the service director at the time referred to it as operator error and thought that i would get used to the vehicle. then seven months later on january 1, 2003, i lost control of the vehicle on the beltway trying to avoid something in the road. it was raining. i was going the speed limit (55 mph) and my car started to spin and ended up going southbound in the northbound lanes and finally crashed into a concrete dividing wall. the air bags did not deploy. i feel very fortunate to be alive and that no one else was hurt. the car was taken to the dealership and it is currently under investigation for possible defects. i feel that i am unable to drive this unsafe vehicle. i have also noticed that the vehicle has a tendency to pull to the right.

On february 16, 2005 while traveling eastbound i-80 in salt lake city i hit some black ice and lost control of my 2002 jeep liberty. i was traveling freeway speeds and had a front impact along with a driver side rollover and a slide of approximately 100 yards. all of the emergency personnel that responded to my accident voiced shock and concern that none of the airbags deployed. further, i have heard that if the g-force was not great enough to deploy the side airbags, the jeep should not have rolled (i have no idea if that is true). i had, and still have, serious concerns about why my airbags did not deploy and do not trust that in the event of another accident they would deploy, regardless of the severity. i contacted jeep and asked them to look into it. they did do some investigation. however, i was told that because my jeep was not preserved for their inspection there was nothing they could do. i have sent them several e-mails explaining that i do have photo that document the damage and show that the airbag did not deploy. they have just disregarded my complaints. i also have concerns about the ease in which my jeep rolled over. this concern has also been dismissed. i would like to know that my family is going to be safe if anther unfortunate accident occurs.

I ordered my jeep liberty 7/01 and picked it up 9/01. the morning of 4/4/04 i was driving home and started crashing into trees. the car was spinning, back and forth across the road - hit 3 trees, mailboxes and a telephone pole (hard enough that even though it was the last thing that i hit, it moved enough that it tore the cables out of someone's house). about 50 feet before the 1st tree, was my front passenger tire and about 2 feet of the axle (or whatever holds the rim and tire on the truck). the front of the truck from the right front quarter panel to 1/3 across the front of the truck is up inside the dashboard, the back driver's tire is blown out, the spare tire on the back is smashed, the 2 passenger side doors are smashed and the entire truck is off the frame. i told the tow driver and police about the recall that i'd just gotten that stated that the a ball joint that has separated from the knuckle could result in loss of vehicle directional control and could result in a crash. i had an appointment to get it fixed 4/6/04...the accident was 4/4/04. my injuries: airbags didn't go off but i was wearing my seatbelt. i broke my arm (8 weeks in cast, 6 weeks in a brace and i'm still in physical therapy. standard seatbelt bruise that lasted more than 3 weeks, and the associated pain. my insurance is covering my medical and the replacement of the car (with financing, it paid exactly what i owed). so, even though jeep knew about the need for a recall in october 2003, i wasn't notified until march 2004. it was a clear dry night. i was awake and coherent, not speeding or drinking, and paying attention when i suddenly lost control. in fact, it's damn lucky that i was only going 35-40. jeep claims they're not responsible. all i want is for them to admit that they were at fault. if they'd sent the recall notice in a timely manner, back in 10-11/03, it would have been fixed prior to another winter of snow and sleet and crap getting into that joint to corrode it! *la

Upon making a slight lane correction at approx. 60 mph, my daughter's 2002 jeep libety began swerving uncontrollably. she felt no resistance to the steering wheel as she tried to stop the swerving. at no time did she apply the brakes. witnesses said it appeared she had a flat tire. eventually, the vehicle entered the grass median and rolled 2.5 or 3.5 times coming to rest on the roof facing on-coming traffic. the complete rear end(tires and differential) separated and ended up approx. 75 feet from the vehicle. the right front axle or cv joint was broken. neither her passenger or her air bags deployed. the driver's seat belt was broken at the end of the motion of the rolling. both occupants were bruised and cut. we believe the axle failed and caused this potentially fatal accident. this vehicle had approx. 3000 miles on it. at 1800 miles the engine had thrown a rod and the engine was replaced completely. the jeep liberty is structurally unsound and of poor design particularly in the area of the rear suspension. daimler-chysler has lowered the suspension in obvious response to roll over incidents.*jb..*ak

My wife lost control of our 2002 jeep liberty limited edition while driving in a downpour in the late afternoon on 12/19/02. she crossed the median colliding with a car and a truck and continued into a muddy field where the vehicle finally came to a stop. the driver side airbag failed to deploy either during or after the crash, however, the passenger side airbag deployed during the crash even though there was no passenger in that seat. this accident is, i believe, a driver side frontal offset collision type. dealer contacted independent investigator for chrysler who obtained codes from the on-board computer trying to find out why the driver side airbag failed. we have no results of the investigation as yet. luckily, my wife did have her seat belt fastened or her injuries would have been much worse. she does have bruising and soreness and backpain and also has no memory of actual crash. numerous medical tests have been performed while she was a patient in the hospital and after her release but no major health problems have been diagnosed as yet.

I have had two (2) major accidents in my 2002 jeep liberty limited, both of which resulted in physical injury to myself that could have been avoided if my airbags had deployed properly. in both accidents there was no airbag deployment whatsoever.

Both rear power windows on my 2002 jeep liberty haved failed to operate. they just fall down into the door and i have to prop them up with different devices. so far windows have failed 2 times on one side and 1 side on the other. the safety issue to me is someone getting into my car when the window falls into the inside of the door.

A jeep liberty with side impact air bags was in a collision. the collision was serious enough to total the car and the side impact airbag did not deploy. an independent investigator for chrysler performed an inspection, chrysler stated to myself in a letter to answer my concerns that the air bag was operational. however, when my body shop guy had to tear down the car further for insurance purposes he noticed that it wasn't even attached.*ak
