Where to begin? my airbag light has been coming on for months while driving. i took it to a chrysler dealership 6 months ago & was charged $100 for them to tell me they didn't know what was wrong. about a month ago, while driving on the highway, my headlights went out, came back on, went out again, and finally i hit my high beams and they stayed on. my engine uses about 2 quarts of oil per week. i have parked on clean surfaces & there is no oil leaking, but it is going somewhere. i can hear a ticking noise coming from the engine area. i called chrysler's toll-free number today after the headlights went out again, and was informed that my jeep is under recall for the air bag module, and maybe that is what is causing the lights to go out. this makes no sense to me that one would have anything to do with the other. i told them that i have seen other complaints about the headlights, but they stated that they've had no complaints. i have also replaced front tires three times in the past year for wear on the outside edge. i've had the jeep aligned, tires rotated as they should be, and they just keep balding on the outer edge. the service tech said that jeeps eat through tires because of the wheel base? this car has all but eaten up most of my income. it is constantly having issues, and i get nowhere with chrysler. *tr

I have had my jeep liberty for about 5 years no major problems with it until this past august. i've changed the oil in it every 3,000 miles, and maintained my jeep very, very well. one day i started the car, was driving away from my house and i heard a loud knocking sound from the engine. the engine light came on, and when i checked the code it read as the knock sensor. i took it to the mechanic to determine the cause. they told me that the engine was done, that i needed to replace it with a new engine to fix the problem, and that he had seen this problem with liberty's several times before! i've checked numerous help websites and jeep forums and it confirmed that i was not the only liberty owner with this problem, but yet chrysler hasn't done anything about it! buying a new engine for a car is not cheap, and it isn't something that i should pay out of pocket when there are hundreds of other reports of bad liberty engines. this needs to be researched and taken care of promptly!

My 2002 jeep liberty was bought brand new from the dealer. about two months ago i was driving on the highway when all of a sudden the dashboard turned off and then turned back on, then my car started shaking like it was about to stall, and the engine light started to blink. i got scared because i didn't want my engine to stall and break down in the middle of the highway since it can be very dangerous, so i got off the highway and parked it in a lot over night so that i could take it straight to the dealer the next day. i took it to the dealer very carefully, my car started over heating when it was sitting in place/ traffic for more than one minute, and then it would cool back down when it was moving. finally at the dealer they changed the water pump, thermostat, and one of the coils. the dealership said the problem was fixed and sent me off. within that week my car started acting up again, the engine light began to flash again and i noticed my car was still being jumpy. i took it back and it turns out it had blown head gaskets, not only that but the heads were not even repairable. i need a complete new engine. i looked online and have found that it is very common for jeep liberty's to have a major engine problem. there is obviously something wrong with the way jeep builds their engines. there needs to be a recall, it is a defect in the liberty's. there have been multiple complaints of jeep engines breaking down with no signs. also as a side note, the seat belt on the drivers side doesn't really click and sometimes un buckles on its own. there is also an electrical problem, the inside lights turn off and on all the time by themselves. *tr

Jeep started missing and stalled as i was driving. lost break pressure and steering control of the vehicle. thank goodness i was able to get to the side of the road without an accident. the engine light came on and the vehicle would not restart. after being towed to a mechanic, he told me the values where done and the motor was shot. i have since looked up the problem on the web and have found that most 2002 jeep liberty's have experienced the same problem, repeatedly, one guy is on his fourth motor. spoke to the local chrysler dealer who acted like i spoke a foreign language, never heard of the problem. this is the company we just bailed out with taxpayer dollars, correct! i am at a loss, can't afford to fix it nor buy a new vehicle. please put some pressure on chrysler to address the issue, we addressed theirs. *tr

My daughter bought a 2002 jeep liberty 1 month ago. we changed the oil and i had her check it every two weeks since the vehicle was new to her. she did as i said for a couple weeks and said it used none. she is very diligent at watching her mileage to plan oil changes every 3000 miles. she went to work and the engine started to knock. she checked the oil and found it 3 quarts low and got no low oil warning. we took it to a shop and it needs a new engine. we found out no reputable salvage yard wants to sell the engine due to a known oil gear issue, so they will not even warranty one with low miles. a rebuilt motor with the oil gear issue fixed costs $3200.00. with labor my daughter is looking at $4500.00 to replace an engine with only 119000 miles. i searched the internet on 2002 jeep liberty 3.7 engine. i found many complaints regarding the blown motor. the average seems to be 96000 miles. many people online said they contacted jeep and they said they were sol. i don't expect a new engine for nothing, but when the average vehicle today does 250000 miles by most manufacturers and toyota is at 400000. i would like to see an american company doing everything it can to create customer loyalty.  Email from congressman latta's office re constituent complaints about her chrysler 2002 jeep liberty (119000 mileage) with a knocking engine due to manufacturers problem. *smd the consumer stated she was diligent about checking the oil. however, one day when she checked the oil, due to an engine knock, she discovered the oil was three quarts low and a warning signal never alerted her. when the vehicle was taken to a repair shop, she was informed a new engine was needed at a cost of $4,500. the consumer was informed, there was a known oil delivery issue with the 2002-2003 3.7 liter engines.

August 08, bought my 02 liberty. took about 1.5 years to drive it because of an accident - that's why i bought the liberty. about 1 year later the idle air control valve went out, had to replace it. there's been other, minor things, like when accelerating, feels like someone bumped into me. sometimes are worse than others. often feel a vibration. within months of being 1 year of replacing the iav, began to get extremely bad gas mileage - about 187m to a tank. not sure why. replaced the spark plugs, did a lof, inspection, etc.. almost exactly 1 year from replacing the iav, check engine light came on. was on for 1-1.5 days. i decided not use it until i could get it to the mechanic. next morning, was going to the store & the light was off! but when i pulled into a parking space, it died. this sort of thing's happened before, db cluster being faulty. other things [vacuum seal leak, etc] never prompted the lights on. had to replace the iav again & it ran fine. recently, been getting that kicking feeling & like my car is running rough. today, i noticed the airbag light was stuck on. checked the manual, it said to have the airbag system checked. i was nervous about driving - had an odd feeling the airbag would deploy - moved my seat back just in case. since the accident, i get anxiety over these things. luckily, no deployment. got it home, turned it off, waited, turned it on, waited a few seconds and the light turned off this time. went straight to my computer only to find these recalls and investigations - one being the steering - last week had a nerve-wracking experience, my car began to swerve turning left onto the freeway, it was raining, so, i slowly merged. wasn't until it straightened out that it began to swerve, almost like losing control, didn't feel like a slip. but i just assumed it was. also, the seat belts don't seem to stay click in at times.

I have a 2002 jeep liberty. change oil every 3000 miles. valve seat shattered. zero compression in #2 cylinder. i checked on line and there is a lot of other people with the same problem. what are you going to do about it? i loved my jeep so much we were going to buy another one. now i'm having second thoughts about buying your vehicles.
09/29/201198000
Cause: seat got loose got jammed in the valve and busted the piston, effect: engine chokes out. wont idle. misfires. pulled no codes. i have found this and broken valve springs are an extremely common flaw in jeeps 2002-5. in 2006 chrysler changed the intake parts for it and never notified the public as to the reason. the replacement parts are listed as being able to be bought rebuilt or new, however you cannot find any rebuilt ones. reason being you would have the same problem because its defective. this should have been recalled. no deaths=no recall - taxpayer and consumer melody b kasmarik

When vehicle was started that morning check engine light came on. no apparent problems oil and other fluids ok. the power steering at one point that day seemed to go out for a brief moment but problem was not recurring. driving down the highway that afternoon and the vehicle just died smoke was pouring from under the hood. i pulled onto the side of the road, liquid was leaking all over the ground. called a mechanic he stated it was antifreeze leaking. could not restart vehicle, had it towed to mechanic. upon inspection i found out the long block was cracked. i bought the jeep a year ago used, currently 140,000 miles. i am still paying on it monthly. it needs a new engine and is currently sitting in my driveway. i am still paying on it monthly. after talking to a few mechanics i found out this is a common problem with this make/model/year. the research i have done confirms it. i am paying to every month to have a brokendown vehicle in my driveway that i can't drive and can't afford to fix. this is a problem with the manufacturing of the engine who is going to take responsibility.

Car overheated, check engine light came on and steam poured out from under the hood on the highway. mechanic used a scan tool and determined that there was a cylinder 2 misfire. cooant was found in the cylinder and maybe the head gasket needed to be replaced. when the head was removed the gasket was ok but it was determined that the engine (long block) needed to be replaced. i have found other owners online who have had this same issue with the 2002 and 2003 jeep libertys. i am over the 7 year 70,000 mile powertrain warranty. car was always maintained and regular oil changes were performed.no off-roading or towing done with this vehicle.

While driving my 2002 jeep liberty at an estimated 45-50 mph, the engine suddenly stalled and then shut off without warning. the engine roared as if accelerating and rpms fluctuated from high to low without increasing actual vehicle speed and lost control of steering and coasted until car stopped. the dashboard lit up for battery, check engine light, and oil and all other power stayed on, including radio and headlights and emergency lights. when car came to a stop, i put the car in park and turned it off and restarted it. dashboard indicators turned off and car started normally to only repeat the same engine stall less than a mile away at a slower speed. car then required several more attempts to start engine. at this time, the car had a 1/2 tank of gas. the next day i changed all fluids including oil, antifreeze, coolant and added a fuel injection cleaner and filled car to a full tank and was able to drive back home without issue. next time car was used same engine stall happened as car was in reverse and without the rpm fluctuation or dashboard indicators lighting up. new battery installed and hooked up to computer for data codes which revealed no error codes. car currently in shop for 7 days with over $500 in costs that did not solve problem. car maintenance in great shape at 103700 miles and full car tuneup done just last year by jeep dealership. i have been told by the mechanic of several different problems it could be or not be, and invest money in repairs that may not even solve the problem. total engines failures/stalls in one week averaged 2 times each time the car was driven. given the traffic and traveling speed of the car, i was lucky to have avoided collision but do not feel safe or trust to use my car especially after reading complaints of others experiencing same engine failure without a solution provided that solved the problem.

2 weeks ago we had an engine light come on and took it to a dealership to have it serviced. it came back after putting it on the analyzer that cylinder 6 had misfired so they just reset the light and said if it came back on to come in and they would replace the sparkplug. 2 weeks later the light came back on and the upper and lower seal blew. i was told by the service dept. that it would be 6 to 8 weeks to get the part and that we are number 60 on the list for the same parts. is there a recall problem that we don't know about? *tr

The first incident happened back when i first got my jeep right before the warranty was about to expire. it was running fine and had no indication that anything was wrong. it was around the 35,000 mile mark. i was driving to work and my jeep just stalled on me. i pulled off to the side of the road, tried to start it again, and nothing. so i called the dealership who told me to call the 800# for the tow truck (which took 2 hours at 20 degrees....no heat...not good). i found out that was actually a piston and a rocker-arm along with many other little parts that needed to be fixed in the engine.......so major engine repair. the jeep was in the shop for a couple of weeks. after it was fixed all was well.....until the breakdown from the recall....that is my next complaint....stay tuned!!! :) *tr

At the end of the 2001 i bought a 2002 jeep liberty sport with service contract. minor problem have occurred in the first year. in the 16th month of ownership the vehicle engine failed while i was making a trip to las vegas, nevada. my family and i almost got into an accident because while the car was in motion it suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. i called chrysler and had it towed to tobin jeep in las vegas, nevada. the dealer indicated that the engine had failed and they need to replace the bottom half of the engine. chrysler promised that the new engine would arrive by may 5, 2003 since the vehicle was towed on april 30, 2003. i decided to buy a max care because i planned on keeping this car for a long time. tobin the dealership did loan me a car while i was driving it in nevada. i was not allowed to drive it back to california where my job and my residence are. it was extremely inconvenient for me because have to take the greyhound bus back to california or loose my job. chrysler has given me $30.00 a day for maximum of five days charged to my credit card and chrysler promised to reimburse. i now use public transportation. i?ve been late for work the last 3 weeks and i?m starting to have trouble with my boss. on may 28,2003 at 9:00 pm i called tobin jeep the dealer indicated that the vehicle in done and it just needed to be test driven. the next day the may 29,2003 i was getting ready to take greyhound bus after work at 11:00 p.m. back to nevada to pick up my jeep liberty. i called to confirm to make sure the car is fixed. tobin jeep indicated that the engine had failed again for the 2nd time. before the engine block was the problem and now the engine valve head is the problem. i called again on june 10, 2003. tobin the dealer indicates that the valve spring needs to be replaced and the engine failed for the 3rd time. the vehicle is now 40 days and counting in the shop at tobin jeep in las vegas nevada. emmanuel lapena 408-296-3055

I am experiencing a rattling sound when driving uphill or downhill through driveway, traveling 5-20 miles an hour. i took my jeep 2002 liberty 2wd to get serviced and received recommended repairs: prosteer control arm with ball joint upper center, remove and install propeller shaft to replace universal joints on both ends, rear wheel bearings, tail pipe is welded to muffler, muffler does not meet design specifications and should be replaced due to exhaust leak as well, remove rack and pinion, complete rack as does not meet design specifications and is leaking. i was driving about 25 mph and my rear right side tire was smoking profusely. i pulled over and noticed the gray smoke from my tire. i took the car to check the rear breaks. they were fine but was told that i had a leak from the exhaust pipe which dripped on to that area. the car has 75,806 miles. i was told that i could loose control of vehicle and entire area can collapse during traffic due to these issues. aside from these issues, i am experiencing a whistling sound, problems with rear drivers side passenger power window regulator which produces grind-like sound. the window came off and i was told that i needed a new regulator for the window. i'm also experiencing a red stain in engine oil drippage on ground. finally, strange odor from car -odor continues to be present whether i wash the carpets and seats (smells like mold/mildew or skunk).

Jeep liberty has problem with engine misfire resulting in a dangerous condition if you are driving. the engine will buck wildly. have taken to dealer 5 times. appears to fix problem, but returns without fail after a few thousand miles. i have seen many of the same complaints on various web sites (google engine misfire jeep liberty 2002 3.7). codes from car computer are p0354 and p0304 indicating failure in coil and engine misfire. replace coil and spark plugs problem keeps returning. i have seen many others with same problem although the last digit of the odb codes could be different. i believe there is a serious defect in the manufacturing of the vehicle causing the problem. if you were in an accident avoidance situation, this problem could cause a crash and death. *tr

Constant power train problems with vehicle. *tr [e-mail 1-18-08] it is not a powertrain problem. it is really an engine sludging problem. i have researched this problem and have found out this is a common problem for chrysler products such as the intrepid and durango. it is now starting to show up on vehicles like mines, which is a jeep liberty. my vehicle's check engine light came on december 21, 2007 and it has been at the dealership for repairs every since. i was informed it is awaiting a camshaft that is on a nationwide backorder with no eta. in my opinion, it is obvious other vehicles are experiencing similar problems throughout the country. the dealer refuse to replace the engine because i was unable to produce all of my receipts for oil changes. the vehicle currently has 61,000 miles and i was able to come up with receipts from 38,000 up until the current mileage. this vehicle has had numerous problems such as overheating and cylinder head replacement on numerous occasions, 49,622, 51,621, 51,793, 55,182, 57,269 and finally 61,211, all due to engine sludging. i was told all the problems were due to improper oil changes and/or cheep gasoline; however, i have changed the oil in accordance with the manufacturer's suggested intervals and have always used gasoline from distributors such as amoco, exxon and valero. i suspect this in another defective chrysler product that will cost the manufacturer millions if they did the right thing. why is there a shortage of camshafts for this vehicle? why is this part in high demand? hopefully your investigation will reveal what is truly going on. chrysler is trying to make it look like it is the owners who are at fault but in reality, its another defective product they have put on the market. thanks for your response and your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Dt*: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at various speeds, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle restarted immediately every time stalling occurred. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the valve train on the fifth cylinder of the engine was defective. the dealer determined the entire engine needed to be replaced to correct the problem. the manufacturer was not contacted.

Dt*: the contact stated without warning, the engine stalled at 55 mph. the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop, where it was determined the crankshaft sensor fractured and went into the engine, which caused the engine failure.

I had been driving for less than 5 minutes after leaving an appointment. i was stopped in a left turn pocket on torrance blvd @ hawthorne blvd when i saw the oil pressure light, hear a chirp and the engine stalled. i was able to restart the engine and drive to the unocal station, get gasoline and i called the long beach chrysler jeep, the dealership where the solenoid pack was replaced the week before. i was told to get my vehicle to the closest dealership. i delivered the vehicle to south bay chrysler & jeep about 4:00 p.m. on 8/8/03. they test drove the vehicle, performed some diagnostic tests, however, could not explain the propblem and returned my vehicle to me. went to the week before because they replaced a solenoid pack tation at the corner of hawthorne blvd @ torrance blvd,*ak

Upon making a slight lane correction at approx. 60 mph, my daughter's 2002 jeep libety began swerving uncontrollably. she felt no resistance to the steering wheel as she tried to stop the swerving. at no time did she apply the brakes. witnesses said it appeared she had a flat tire. eventually, the vehicle entered the grass median and rolled 2.5 or 3.5 times coming to rest on the roof facing on-coming traffic. the complete rear end(tires and differential) separated and ended up approx. 75 feet from the vehicle. the right front axle or cv joint was broken. neither her passenger or her air bags deployed. the driver's seat belt was broken at the end of the motion of the rolling. both occupants were bruised and cut. we believe the axle failed and caused this potentially fatal accident. this vehicle had approx. 3000 miles on it. at 1800 miles the engine had thrown a rod and the engine was replaced completely. the jeep liberty is structurally unsound and of poor design particularly in the area of the rear suspension. daimler-chysler has lowered the suspension in obvious response to roll over incidents.*jb..*ak

I purchased a used 2002 liberty with only 45,000 miles on it, 9 days later it had to be towed back to the dealership where they then had it for 2 weeks replacing the head because the exhaust rocker spit out of place. they also replaced the tensioner, tappets, camshaft and a few minor parts along with those. i had the vehicle back about a week and a half and it was towed to the dealer again for the same problem. i have now been told that they will probably replace the whole engine. *nm

I was driving down the freeway at 75 when i started hearing a loud grinding noise. i got off the freeway and made it home . as soon as i turned the last corner the steering locked to the left and made a huge grinding noise this time. i stopped in front of the house, and when i got out there was steering fluid everywhere! i pulled the belt off, and the pulley was extremely easy to move all around. i have found that many more people than just me have also had this problem and if it were to have happened on the freeway i could have easily crashed at 75! i called chrysler and they told me they won't do anything becuase its not a saftey problem, and i am the 3rd owner of the vehicle how that has anything to do with it i dont know. i have to special order the part from jeep because nobody carrys it. i will fix it myself once the part comes in and refuse to pay $400 for something they(jeep) should replace for free. they will not recieve and business from me. they are extremly lucky no one was injured and there isnt a lawsuit against them.*ak

The air condition (a/c) hose broke and squirted oil on the serpentine belt, causing it to deteriorate and break. the hose appeared to be cut, which leads me to believe that a strand of the belt had broken and, by constantly whipping the hose, which is much too close to the belt, eventually wore through the hose. i lost both power steering and power brakes in the middle of the freeway at 60mph. *la

I have a 2002 jeep liberty. i had a new transmission put in january 2011. the jeep has about 202000 miles. now i am told that i need a new engine. i have always done the oil changes as noted. the jeep is not even worth the cost of a rebuilt engine. now am reading that chrysler knows about this problem but are denying the engine sludge. i will be a pare of any class action suit against them. this is crazy.

We own a 2002 jeep liberty. a coup[le of weeks ago while traveling the little piece of tail pipe fell of the end of the exhaust pipe. we didn't realize this had happen until we started smelling very strong fumes of plastic melting. we got out and checked and found the piece had fallen of and the heat from the exhaust had melted a hole through the rear bumper. we had to drive the rest of the way with all of the windows down so we didn't get over come by the fumes. the worst part of it all is the pipe is right beside the gas tank. we were worried the whole time the heat would ignite the gas. we have had this jeep liberty less than a year and we have bumper to bumper warranty on it. the dealership refuses to do anything about it. we want to know if this car has been recalled for this problem. it is a real safety hazard. *tr

Check engine light keeps coming back on after repair. has been repaired 3 times over the past few months and it came back on again 2 days after it had been repaired the last time. each and every time the causal part is diagnosed as an o2 sensor, and yet replacing them does not seem to solve the problem for more than a few days. *nlm

While driving at 45-50 mph consumer noticed cooling steam coming from the hood. consumer was able to pull over to the gas station. vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection, and mechanic determined that there was an over flow of cooling which spilled into the engine. however, problem still occurred. consumer took the vehicle to a private mechanic, who determined that head gasket needed to be replaced. *ak
