Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.

I have a 2002 jeep liberty limited. i bought it brand new. the first winter i had it the front end started to slide in a light dusting of snow. i had a more aggressive tirse put on in the spring thinking this would solve the problem, it didn't. jeep says it is normal for the front of the vehicle to slide without anti lock brakes. there is no control when your heading for a tree. when i bought this jeep, i was not made aware that it would slide because it didnt have anti lock brakes. why did i pay extra for a limited liberty without antilock brakes? my daughters and my saftey are more important than a cd and cassette player. upgrading from a front wheel drive to a 4 wheel drive limited liberty is a big disappointment. *jb

Had just purchased a jeep liberty used --first time i drove it on a wet road-i was braking as usual at a red light--the car skidded and swerved 40 feet, finally stopping but not before i had to very off the road to avoid hitting the car in front of me --i was only going 30-35 miles an hour when i started braking--i was terrified by the fact that the car would not stop and could only imagine what would have happened under different circumstances!! --took the car into the jeep dealership--they said the brakes were fine --i had new tires put on the car --even though the dealership said the tires were fine too --the second time -(--wet road)--i was going about 25 miles and hour and lightly braked ----car slid instead of stopping---same day---now very cautious, i carefully hit the brakes when a car quite a distance ahead of me pulled out --again--i was only going about 35mph---fortunately i started braking the second i saw him because the car skidded 30-40 feet at least, turning toward the right, and finally stopped 3 car lengths before i would have hit this car in the driver side door ---had i not had the previous incident just minutes before ---i would have been going 60 miles an hour and not been able to avoid an accident--i went online today --there are numerous similar complaints with jeep liberty's--one person refers to her liberty as a death trap--another man said his wife complained of this and he didn't believe her until he skidded through an intersection going only 20 mph!!! someone else, knowing this problem , simply traded his vehicle to an unsuspecting buyer ---this defect is frightening!!!! this is a car i rarely drive-- fortunately because now i can't take it on the road for fear of having a serious accident!! *tr

I was attempting to stop, going downhill on a day it had rained but was no longer raining. i had my 4 year old daughter in the car the day of this incident. i applied the brakes to stop because another car was making a left hand turn at the end of the hill and the vehicle started to slide i was going approximately 25 miles an hour, and luckily started to stop in time because i slide almost 50 feet and turned the wheel sharply to avoid the car. the jeep never came to a stop the car turned and was able to let off the brakes. the jeep has done this on several occasion prior and i thought i need brakes and that them replaced. this happened after i had new brakes put on. *tr

This vehicle has a recurring braking condition. the front brakes lock-up when normal to moderate brake pressure is applied while driving on wet pavement. the result is that it sends the vehicle into a slide. the lock-up is more likely to happen on asphalt than concrete, and has not been noted, yet, on dry surfaces. the vehicle's brake system has been tested by the selling dealership and reported to be working correctly and safe. after this latest incident, i took the jeep to an empty parking lot where i would not hit anything. i checked it at several different speeds, and at just 15 mph and with normal to moderate brake pressures, the brakes would lockup; rendering no control until the brake was released. when i released the brake, the jeep would immediately continue in the direction the wheels were pointed. i am 60, driven all types of vehicles and in many different location over the world, and to date, have never seen a vehicle respond this way. there is definitely something wrong and i feel that an examination, more in depth than the dealership can perform, is needed to isolate the cause. i am fearful for my wife and grandchildren safety, and besides reporting the condition, would like to know if nhtsa has a facility in this area that could conduct additional testing of this nature. and if so, what would be the cost? *ph

Original message follows: ------------------------ us customer service - chrysler brand site brief description: fixing my recall almost turning out deadly losing control of my front brakes comments: today my wife and i picked up her jeep liberty after having the front ball joints replaced (it was a safety recall) from kona auto center in kailua kona, hi. kona is 45 miles from my town of kamuela. my wife drove the car home and every time she stepped on the brakes, the front brakes made a loud clunk, louder each time. she also noticed a rattling sound. when she came to a traffic light in town. the car almost didn't stop. she had to down shift and even had to use the emergency brakes to keep from rear ending the car in front of her. i test drove the car there was something very wrong. i started to drive back to kona. i to had to down shift and use the emergency brake to stop. if i touched the brake, the front brakes would make a loud bang and then would rattle, with no stopping power. half way back i had to stop. i crawled under the car and found to my amazement that one bolt on each front brake caliper was missing and the other bolt was only finger tight. i called the kona auto center and spoke with the service manager jeff. i told him i was on my way and how dangerous my situation was. jeff met me as i arrived. he asked me what i wanted. i told him i just wanted the two bolts put back and torque all the hardware and the brakes checked. i also told him to tell all his employees that any time they touch/disconnect any brake system they better pay attention. my family lives depend on them. he offer me some free servicing, but i told him that his kona shop has already lost my business. i typically do all my own maintenance. i would think i could trust the dealership, but now i know better... please check into this and email me back. vin: 2w176146, mileage: 78000, servicing dealer: kona auto center. *nm

I purchased my 2002 jeep liberty in dec. 05. i noticed a shimmy when depressing the brakes immediately after buying it. it had 44000 miles on it. i thought this was normal since the dealership had done a safety inspection on it before selling it to me. i noticed in mid april that the inside driver tire was almost completely worn. i took it to a local garage only to find that my lower ball joints were bad, along with the front rotors being warped beyond repair. this cost me $1100 in repairs, including the 3 new tires i purchased! my extended warranty i purchased would not cover the cost to repair. i wrote daimler chrysler a complaint, in which they declined. i am furious after reading all the consumer complaints about ball joints failing on the liberties - even after having been fixed after the recall. a vehicle with this few miles should not have these problems!!! *jb

Speed sensor wire at rear differential was chafed due to close proximity to brake line to left rear wheel. the braek line contacts at the base of the conenctor where not plastic armor protects the wire. *ak conductors are exposed and ground on the the brake line, causing speedometer to give erratic or no readings. most evident with passengers or a load in the rear, caousing the wire to contact the brake line. erractice speed data also effects automatic transmission shifting, causing sharp and abbrupt shifts to lower gears at speed.

Tl* - the contact received recall 06v288000 for the 2002 jeep liberty concerning lower ball joints. the contact complained about the effect that the ball joint had on the tires. the contact stated that no matter what speed she was driving at, but usually at about 15 mph she felt and heard the suspension in the car shifting whenever she hit a bump. the contacts complaint was that after one and a half years the tires were completely bald. the contact stated that this was directly related to the safety recalls on the ball joints. also, the contact stated that on 11/2005 she lost control of the vehicle after making a turn. after taking the vehicle for service, the contact learned from the dealer that all of the steering fluid leaked out, and the power steering belt split in half. the contact would like to have the tires replaced under the recall as well.*ak updated 2/7/2007 - the consumer's vehicle experience extended crank time to start. the dealer replaced eh fuel pump and fuel pump reservoir. the lap belt in the rear seat became twisted. when the vehicle was put into reverse the consumer hear a noise. the dealer made repairs to the transmission. the lighter was inoperative. *nm
