Just purchased vehicle, told by local dealer in early july that there was a recall on lower ball joints, with a national back order on parts, after completing repair 9/24, they stated it needs new steering knuckles at $1094.00. on tuesday 9/25 said it was ready to pick up, i asked if they solved the air bag light being on, they said it would be a few more days. they called this morning (9/28) and said they can not give me the vehicle back because the ball joints are now falling out. i asked since i drove it in, why after you recall repair is it not drive able? they said safety reasons. so now i have a jeep being held hostage, with still no answer for the air bag light to be on. something is wrong with these models. *tr

Left front tire fell to the side. ball joint was broken. steering was impossible. vehicle contained male and female parents and two young children. they were on a busy freeway in northern ca. when auto repaire people looked at it they found no grease in the joint and the ball had rust all over the top. this is a sealed joint that could not be greased. it looked as though is was not properlly greased during orginal installation.

I was leaving work, and drove out of the driveway onto the road. the car started a dragging sound and i could not go, so i stopped and got out to see that my front drivers tire was sitting sideways. it had broke away from the control arm. i was lucky to have aaa, but when he came, he was not even sure if he could get it loaded on the flatbed. he did though somehow. the next morning i looked online to check for recalls on these control arms. there was one listed for my state for the control arms. it was for about 42,000 jeep liberty's (2002-2003) models. i called daimyler chrysler and asked why i did not get a recall notice and the customer service representative told me the recall did not include my vin number. well it should have. obviously i could have been killed if i was driving on the highway like the day before doing 65mph. if the control arm would have broke. all i can say is i have a guardian angel. i want other jeep liberty owners to know that this could happen to them. they really should get their control arms checked. my cost to repair (including alignment) around $500.00

I received safety recall j17 for my 2002 jeep liberty. i contacted the dealer on 4-16-10, but was told the dealer had no parts and i should call back in one week. i called 4-23-10 and was told only one part was being shipped per week by the manufacturer. the dealer tooky name and phone and said they would call. to date, i have not been called, but i noticed i have a noise coming from the front-end of my jeep when the wheel is turned. i don't know if this is related to the recall, but in any event, i cannot believe chrysler is shipping parts for only one vehicle per week to the dealer.

As i was pulling out of my subdivision i heard a loud metal on metal grinding noise and had a very difficult time steering my 2002 jeep liberty. i called aaa who sent a tow truck driver and had my car hauled to the dealer (cardinal dodge in louisville, ky). the upper ball joint on the driver side front broke. this car has already been recalled twice before and has been taken in to be repaired as required by the recall for this same issue. thankfully i hadn't made it to the expressway yet. i am so grateful that i did not have this happen to me as i was driving 60 mph. i have two young children and we all could have been seriously injured as they are normally in the car with me every day and it just so happened that they were not in the car yesterday. it happened right after i accelerated after i had come to a complete stop. this is a major safety issue and apparently the poor quality of the chrysler parts needs to be recalled yet again. we have not been happy with the car or the service on the car. please feel free to contact me as i do not feel the cost of the repair of this substandard vehicle should be my responsibility. chrysler needs to stand behind what they make. *tr

We drive a jeep liberty 2002 which we purchased at carmax in arlington,tx in 2006. despite having numerous problems with electric windows for which they had to replace under the extended warranty, we began to notice a loud popping sound coming from the front end when we make a hard left or right turn. we took the car to a service mechanic, diagnosed cv axles,ball-joint problems. attempt made to correct it in several occasions, but the problem re-occurred and getting more worrisome by the amount if time it happened in a day and 7 days/week. we also take noticed that we're not the only one (jeep owners) with this problem, we are tired to take the jeep to repair mechanics and truly, we feel unsafe to drive it on the freeway. what is the solution? will chrysler fix the problem? thanks *tr

While towing our 2002 jeep liberty le behind an rv, with key in the first click position, the keys have twice fallen out of the ignition switch and caused the front wheels to lock in an other than straight-ahead position. this means the switch has rotated, on its own, to the off position. in the first instance, in 2004, there was no damage other than some scuffing on the edges of the tires - due to the wheels becoming locked in an angled state. in the second instance, in 2008, there was approximately $2,300.00 damage to the right front of the jeep. chrysler has been contacted, twice in 2008, but stated that the problem was caused by the tire manufacturer, rather than by the wheels locking. i will be sending the two letters which i sent to chrysler, along with a cover letter to your office, with photos showing the damage to the jeep liberty. you may decide whether the wheels locked or the 3 tires just destroyed themselves. naturally, chrysler corporation has only contacted me by phone, so there is no paper trail, save my few notes when speaking with some person i can barely understand. thank you for your time! *tr updated 02/19/10

My 2002 jeep liberty 2x4 always bounces when i drive it. it bounces and the steering wheel turns by itself when i hit a bump at slow speed. regularly, i hear a popping sound when i turn the wheel to make a turn. i have had the vehicle serviced regularly and had the recall item completed (front ball joint) but still have the problems. i have placed all new tires on the vehicle but the problems still exist. i am afraid to drive the car on the freeway at high speed because i can feel that the car does not operate correctly. i cannot afford to buy another car at this time but feel that this car is not completely safe to drive. please note: this is a recurring problem rather than an incidental problem.. which started about a year and a half ago and has gotten progressively worse. thank you for your concern and for letting me bring this to your attention. *tr

I have a 2002 jeep liberty. the ball joint separated and caused me to crash into a cement wall on i-77 in west virginia. i picked up the car after it was repaired in wv and brought it home. i had to have more work done after i got back because it still was not right. the ball joints have been replaced at least 4 times. i was told by one of the mechanics that they were still using the joints that were causing the problem because they had not figured out how to re-design them. the last time i had it repaired they (hopefully) put ones on that are a new design. i have had to have it towed because it was unsafe to drive because the joint was so bad -- i check it regularly! my insurance company is progressive. chrysler settled with them and paid for all the repairs after the crash. *tr

In november of 2006, i had a recall fixed for the front:control arm:lower ball joint when the parts became available. i brought the car back 3 days later having issues with the steering and hearing a noise. the dealership took the car for a few days and did a complete inspection and assured me the new parts were sufficient. every now and then (not constant, but scarcely) when i would turn the wheel just a little, the car would turn as if i had turned my wheel all the way. it scared me a few times, but it didn't happen often at all, so i didn't think much of it. on may 31, 2007, i was merging onto i-91 in connecticut driving only 22 miles per hour, and my car did that very thing. i went up and over the curb, up the embankment and crashed into a steel connecticut state sign. if it wasn't for the sign, i would have continued to lose control and possibly been killed. hitting the sign swung my back end around, where i rolled down the embankment and to a complete stop on the side of the highway. my car sustained over $7,000 worth of damage and has damaged my perfect driving record. no other car was involved and no one was hurt, including myself. i was very fortunate, but i feel there needs to be further investigation into the previous recall and possibly a new recall should be posted to eliminate this problem. the problem still exists despite the recall from last year. *jb

I own a 2002 jeep liberty for which i received a lower ball joint recall on october 4, 2006 from chrysler. i talked to the dealer who indicated chrysler is supplying them with very few parts to fix the problem. i have waited a month for the parts and based on the current pace will have to wait at least another month for the dealer to get enough parts to fix my car for this recall. it seems odd that chrysler would issue a safety recall for a problem that they say can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning and take over 2 months to make the parts available. can anything be done to force them to speed up their production of the necessary parts for this recall? *nm

I reported a noise during operating my jeep liberty, ltd. 4 wd over bumps and turns. i purchased the vehicle with 5 miles on 8/13/2002. 3/21/2003 at 11638 miles, the service shop made a warranty claim - lubed the bushings. 4/28/2003 at 12932 miles, the service shop made another warranty claim -sleeve & strap was replaced. 2/9/2004, at 25045 miles, the service shop made yet another warranty claim -replaced the sway bar bushings & links. i also had lower ball joints replaced for a recall. 4/16/2004, service shop repositions the ft shield at ft suspension. the noise never went away. at the service shops advice, i needed to bring it in if the noise became worse. yeah right! two other mechanics suggested steering/suspension related. on 4/09/2006, i had my car inspected by the dealership service once again for the worsen noise. the service team replaced the rear center ball joint at a cost of $276.17 and returned my vehicle. with my warranty running out, the service team has supposedly found more serious part changes, of course. on 6/15/2006, the service team replaced the lower ball joint due to wear and repaired a leak in my tire at the cost of $224.05. i also have noticed vehicle pulling to the right. in addition to having paid for services with my warranty still effective, i have further developed other serious car issues. i have a leak in my rear differential and my brake light & abs lights are on. i had to stop at a service station to fill my tire from 10 psi! although the service department would like me to bring back my car, i do not believe they have the experience for a fourth visit. on my last trip to the dealership, i had requested that if there are any parts replaced to please save the old part. upon my pick up of the vehicle, i did not receive these parts. i have purchased an extended warranty end of july for 1,600.00 just in case. *nm

Jeep always pulls to the right. problem was supposed to be resolved with ball joint replacement procedure from a recall, but it still exists. dealer performed a wheel alignment (which he suspected was needed), but problem still exists. replaced original tires with only 20,000km (probably due to compensating for pulling to the right) - consider this a safety issue because you always have to compensate for the pull. *nm

I have a 2002 jeep liberty and on oct. 7, 2003, i had an incident in which my steering wheel and tires locked up during a left turn causing me to turn in a full 360 facing the car that was behind me. this was on a tuesday. on friday, oct. 10, 2003, i was making a right turn into a gas station and my car skidded causing me to lose brief control of my car again. i was able to straighten up the car and avoid another 360 and possible collision with gas pupms. luckily, no one was hurt and there was not any property damage in either situation. at this point, i contacted the dealership (galeana) who told me it was my tires. i went to goodyear and they said my tires were fine and i should go to the dealership. i called the delearship back and they told me to bring it in and they would check it over but they had not heard of this problem before. they were unable to find anything wrong with my car and i really did't feel like i received good customer service. my reason for submitting this now is because i have seen articles and my mother heard it on the news that there has been a recent recall on 2002 jeep liberties that might explain what happened. i contacted the dealership tonight and asked them about a recall and they denied that there is one. i am also unable to find it on your sight although the article i read stated it as being released by you. i have been lucky that it has not happened again but i do not feel as safe in my car as i did before the incidents. please contact me and let me know if there is a recall and if not, please document my complaint. the next person may not be as lucky. thank you, emily lewis. *ak

I lost control of the vehicle two days after purchase in the rain while trying to make a right hand turn. the vehicle went straight through the intersection, up and over the curb and into someones front yard. reported to the dealership. two months later i had my second experience that also happened in the rain. i was trying to come to a stop at a stop sign and could not stop the car. at this time i took the car back to the dealership and they said there was nothing found. the service director at the time referred to it as operator error and thought that i would get used to the vehicle. then seven months later on january 1, 2003, i lost control of the vehicle on the beltway trying to avoid something in the road. it was raining. i was going the speed limit (55 mph) and my car started to spin and ended up going southbound in the northbound lanes and finally crashed into a concrete dividing wall. the air bags did not deploy. i feel very fortunate to be alive and that no one else was hurt. the car was taken to the dealership and it is currently under investigation for possible defects. i feel that i am unable to drive this unsafe vehicle. i have also noticed that the vehicle has a tendency to pull to the right.

2002 jeep liberty: since purchase at 6k miles and 6 months old the vehicle has had major issues and i feel unsafe driving it but cannot get a new car at this time. tow bills topping $1000 since purchase in 2003. between 2003-2004 the jeep was at the dealer several times due to internal grinding, difficulty steering which increased when braking, and felt like it was in 4high all the time. took to dealership but they could not figure out issue. fiance was driving & we heard loud bang vehicle started jerking & making a grinding noise, then we spun into a median and came to a stop not hitting anything luckily. turned off and back on and seemed to work fine. it broke down again in lexington, ky during rush hour traffic about 2 days after the dealer told me the problem was in the anti lock braking system. we lost all gears and started rolling backwards at a redlight almost hitting a car until i pulled up emergency brake. it had to be towed to dealer. transfer case had cracked and exploded at less than 30k miles. dealer replaced under warranty with refurbished parts. has broken down several times with sensor issues & battery problems. has been towed at least 3 times when sensor problem was not properly fixed at dealer and overlooked as the problem. entire time i have owned my jeep the steering wheel has had a major shaking and rattling action which increases when applying brakes due to recall on ball joints & issues with steering column according to dealership when asked why it will not drive & brake smoothly. after fixing recall jeep worked fine for about 3 months then goes back to previous issues again. ball joint issue causes much difficulty in steering and braking properly and makes me feel unsafe & uncomfortable driving it. i feel as though the ball joint issue prior to & after recall repair has still not been fixed and seems to worsening. *tr

The jeep was being driven by a family member. she was driving straight on hwy 99 and felt the front right side drop a little and heard a squealing tire. it then began to swerve side to side growing increasingly out of control until it spun and hit the center median coming to rest in the fast lane. the body shop found a broken tie rod end lower ball joint and bound knuckle it the front. some of that would be from the impact on the guard rail. chp identified the cause of collision as mechanical failure. there was a recall on the lower ball joints and i had that work done at the dealer. all work on the jeep was done by the dealership. i have contacted daimler chrysler and they are sending some one to look at it. *jb

The dealer advised me that the pulling to the right is a charistic of vehicle and no solutions at this time. this pull is a constant pull and requires that we hold the steering wheel tightly towards the left to compensate for the right pull. this is a hazard and can easily cause over correction on turns because you are trying to compensate for the pull. dt
