On april 7, 2009, chrysler llc submitted to odi a defect information report indicating that it would recall approximately 42,469 model year 2002 through 2003 jeep liberty vehicles to remedy a defect that can result in upper ball joint separation while driving (09v-119).the affected vehicles were built from may 2002 through september 2002 and originally sold or currently registered in connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, kentucky, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia and wisconsin.according to chrysler, the front suspension upper control arm ball joint may experience a loss of lubrication which can lead to corrosion, accelerated wear, and possible separation while driving. chrysler's recall procedure instructs dealers to replace the front upper control arm assemblies on all affected vehicles. although the specific cause for the defect in the recalled production range has not been determined, odi's analysis of upper ball joint separations by vehicle build date shows a clearly defined and significant spike in the rate of separation during the five month production range covered by 09v-119, which accounts for only 11 percent of subject vehicle production but approximately 70 percent of separation incidents.seventy-four (74) of the upper ball joint separation incidents identified by odi occurred in vehicles produced in the recall months, resulting in a separation rate of 174 per 100,000 vehicles.the separation rate in the remaining subject vehicle population is significantly lower, at 9 incidents per 100,000 vehicles.at this time, the data do not show a defect trend in the subject vehicles built outside the recall range after approximately 6-8 years in service. this engineering analysis is closed.

Odi has received 22 complaints of upper ball joint separation on model year 2002 and 2003 jeep liberty 4x4 vehicles.the separation of an upper ball joint on either of the front wheels can result in the affected front wheel collapsing, possibly resulting in vehicle disablement and causing a loss of vehicle control.there is one complaint of a failure at 75 mph, 1 failure at 60 mph, 3 failures at 40 mph, 2 failures at 25 mph, 7 failures occurring while the driver was pulling into the flow of traffic and 2 failures that occurred when the driver was attempting to make a left turn across the flow of oncoming traffic.one complainant alleged almost being hit by an oncoming truck as a result of the vehicle suddenly being disabled in the flow of crossing traffic.another reported the collapse of the front right wheel when making a left turn caused the vehicle to swerve to the right, as a result of which the vehicle ended up in a ditch just missing a collision with a telephone pole.chrysler llc., is continuing to investigate the cause of upper ball joint separations in the subject vehicles.odi has upgraded the investigation to an engineering analysis (ea08-008) to continue to asses the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

Just purchased vehicle, told by local dealer in early july that there was a recall on lower ball joints, with a national back order on parts, after completing repair 9/24, they stated it needs new steering knuckles at $1094.00. on tuesday 9/25 said it was ready to pick up, i asked if they solved the air bag light being on, they said it would be a few more days. they called this morning (9/28) and said they can not give me the vehicle back because the ball joints are now falling out. i asked since i drove it in, why after you recall repair is it not drive able? they said safety reasons. so now i have a jeep being held hostage, with still no answer for the air bag light to be on. something is wrong with these models. *tr

Chrysler has issued a recall for the 2002 jeep liberty regarding the upper control arm failure. this failure is due to failure of the ball joint seal allowing contaminants to eventually cause the ball joint to fail. the recall notice #j17 recall id# 09v119000 only includes vehicles subject to corrosion from road salts in the northeast. i own a 2002 jeep liberty and have noticed that both the joints on the upper ball joint of the control arm have failed (split) and as result have allowed contimanents to enter the ball joint resulting in its replacement. i feel these vehicles need to be covered under the recall notice #j17 for the same reason. it is a safety issue and has nothing to do with being worn. there is a defect in the manufacturing process for if there wasn't the rubber seal around the ball joint would not have split. for the split on the rubber ball joint seal to be noticed, a person has to look really close at it. i noticed mine because i was changing out my front brake pads and did a close up inspection. this is of concern to not only me, but i am sure a lot of the other jeep liberty owners who have had their vehicles front end drop out from under them when they were driving. i live in georgia and do travel to the northeast from time to time and also travel south to florida from time to time. my concern is this: both seals failed on the ball joints. both ball joints are subjected to elements similar to those of the vehicles in the northeast even more so while along the coast of florida. there have been numerous ball joint failures on jeep liberties in georgia and fla for the same reason there have been ball joint failures on jeep liberties in the northeast. a response regardint this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I left my house to go to work and started to pull away when i heard a clunk and then a terrible grinding noise - i tried to back up and the upper ball joint in my jeep snapped and took the brake line with it. i got out and the wheel/tire was hanging sideways on the vehicle. thank god i was not driving on the highway at the time. chrysler says this is not a recall and will not consider fixing it. i am very disgusted as this is a safety issue and the lower ball joints had been recalled previously and there is a bulletin now out about the upper. because there is no recall connected to my vin they will not consider it however. i will be fighting this. *tr

I had just backed out of a parking space in a busy parking lot, drove forward about 20 feet going no more than 7-10 mph, then made a left - still within the parking lot. when turning, i heard a grinding noise, then suddenly, the front end of my 2002 jeep liberty renegade collapsed onto the front tire of the driver's side. the upper ball joint of the vehicle had completely separated, knocking the wheel off in the process. this incident occurred in the late afternoon on a sunday (when mechanics are not open). aaa towed the jeep to a local garage nearby; however, on monday morning, i called chrysler to file a complaint about what had happened. my call was picked up by an overseas customer service rep. he told me that if i could have the car towed to a chrysler dealer, they would see what they could do about covering the repair, but to call back after they'd spoken with the dealer. later that afternoon, i called back. long story short, my call was escalated to a guy in detroit, who at first said that the call center rep had no business suggesting that my repair would be covered. when i told him i have photos of what happened to the car, he authorized the repair. the dealer had to replace the upper control arm and ball joint, and the brake line which was severed when the front end collapsed! i asked the dealer for the defective parts. he said chrysler would want them because they were covering it under warranty. this is a major defect and safety issue - one of many in the 2002 jeep liberty. i shudder to think what would have happened if i had pulled out onto the busy highway! while i was happy that chrysler covered this cost, the car needed further adjustments when it was returned to me as the suspension felt loose and the vehicle was pulling to the left and shaking. the dealer said these were all unrelated (?!), and charged me for those repairs. *tr

I was turning into a parking lot when my front right tire collapsed and i hit the curb. this was due to the ball joints being defected. after about a week and a half my car was fixed by the dealership for no charge. it concerns me that i was never notified that there was a second recall on the ball joints or in fact for that matter on the air bags or the exterior lighting. this accident happened last march, i felt it was necessary to make a complaint after seeing on the tv the investigation that is on going with this problem. *tr

Jeep liberty 2002 has vibration in the steering wheel that makes controlling the jeep very difficult at speeds over 60 miles an hour. then i was on the freeway and i had a total loss off power all most causing accidents the dealership said that the engine needs to be torn apart and inspected and a recall of ball joints done the work took them over a year and the problem still continues their is no warranty and i was charged for the recall repair work i asked for the inspection report showing the work on the engine heads and recall work done when i picked up my jeep they gave me an invoice that showed battery and sparkplug for $2085.00 failing to present me with reports i asked for they said all work is warranted for 1yr 12,000 miles i drove the jeep liberty back to service dept after having another facility look at the engine to confirm if work had been done it had not been touched reported the mechanic and i am now scared to drive or own this vehicle . *tr

This problem is concerning a 2002 jeep liberty sport 4x4 3.7lt. during a slow left turn the driver side front spindle and top ball joint failed. i am the original owner of this vehicle. this vehicle has never been off road or driven roughly, it has only seen highways and local municipal roads. i believe that the spindle and top ball joint in question were defective. within weeks of purchasing this vehicle i returned to a service center with the complaint of the thumping noise from the front end when making turns(have reciept). i was told that there was no problem, the dealer could not duplicate the problem. i complied with the first lower ball joint recall and now the second recall. i attempted to bring my concern to the manufacturer although they were unwilling to listen. i am truely concerned with the front end of the jeep liberty. if my wife would have been on the interstate at 55mph the vehicle would have rolled without question. please forward my concern to all applicable parties and address this with the manufacturer. without investigation of these component falures life and property could be at risk.

I reported a noise during operating my jeep liberty, ltd. 4 wd over bumps and turns. i purchased the vehicle with 5 miles on 8/13/2002. 3/21/2003 at 11638 miles, the service shop made a warranty claim - lubed the bushings. 4/28/2003 at 12932 miles, the service shop made another warranty claim -sleeve & strap was replaced. 2/9/2004, at 25045 miles, the service shop made yet another warranty claim -replaced the sway bar bushings & links. i also had lower ball joints replaced for a recall. 4/16/2004, service shop repositions the ft shield at ft suspension. the noise never went away. at the service shops advice, i needed to bring it in if the noise became worse. yeah right! two other mechanics suggested steering/suspension related. on 4/09/2006, i had my car inspected by the dealership service once again for the worsen noise. the service team replaced the rear center ball joint at a cost of $276.17 and returned my vehicle. with my warranty running out, the service team has supposedly found more serious part changes, of course. on 6/15/2006, the service team replaced the lower ball joint due to wear and repaired a leak in my tire at the cost of $224.05. i also have noticed vehicle pulling to the right. in addition to having paid for services with my warranty still effective, i have further developed other serious car issues. i have a leak in my rear differential and my brake light & abs lights are on. i had to stop at a service station to fill my tire from 10 psi! although the service department would like me to bring back my car, i do not believe they have the experience for a fourth visit. on my last trip to the dealership, i had requested that if there are any parts replaced to please save the old part. upon my pick up of the vehicle, i did not receive these parts. i have purchased an extended warranty end of july for 1,600.00 just in case. *nm

We had a recall for the ball joints of our 2002 jeep liberty. it took nearly 2 years to get them replaced. they were damaged by the time i did and i had to get a temporary repair on them while we waited for the parts. they were repaired at the end of february early march of this year. at the end of may i noticed a similar noise to what i had been hearing when the original ball joints had made before they were replace. as it turned out they had gone bad already. it seems that the new ball joints are defective too. i have had some out of pocket expenses for this issue and i am not happy at how i have been dealt with by the dealer and daimler chrysler. i sent a complaint to daimler and their response was that they were sorry i was not satisfied with my vehicle and would file it in a consumer survey file. i am not unhappy with the vehicle. i am unhappy with how hard it has been to get this recall issue fixed and having to pay for service on the ball joints. i purchased the vehicle from glenn e thomas dodge. the customer service rep with daimler was a woman named alison. my vehicle has been out of use this time for over a month before the final repairs were made. *jb

I lost control of the vehicle two days after purchase in the rain while trying to make a right hand turn. the vehicle went straight through the intersection, up and over the curb and into someones front yard. reported to the dealership. two months later i had my second experience that also happened in the rain. i was trying to come to a stop at a stop sign and could not stop the car. at this time i took the car back to the dealership and they said there was nothing found. the service director at the time referred to it as operator error and thought that i would get used to the vehicle. then seven months later on january 1, 2003, i lost control of the vehicle on the beltway trying to avoid something in the road. it was raining. i was going the speed limit (55 mph) and my car started to spin and ended up going southbound in the northbound lanes and finally crashed into a concrete dividing wall. the air bags did not deploy. i feel very fortunate to be alive and that no one else was hurt. the car was taken to the dealership and it is currently under investigation for possible defects. i feel that i am unable to drive this unsafe vehicle. i have also noticed that the vehicle has a tendency to pull to the right.

Car was taken in for another issue with the jeep vehicle (seems constantly happening). i was told the upper ball joint was failing and car should not be driven. the mechanic called re a possible recall and was informed my vehicle was not in the recall. the date of manufacture was in the required date range but the car was not sold in a salt belt state. actually the car was in the date range (may 1 was start of manufacture - mine was may 2) this is not acceptable. i was driving a dangerous vehicle on an interstate constantly and in an inspection for a leak in fluids this ball joint failure was found. jeep constantly refuses to pay for issues that are turning out to be excessive repairs for many owners. but an extreme vehicle parts failure such as this is not acceptable and should involve all vehicles - not just those in the so called salt belt

I stopped to pick up my daughter's snow pants on the way from school. backing out of the driveway i heard and felt my tire do something. i didn't know what it was, but the car was obviously unable to be driven. when i got out, my passenger side front tire was at angles to the car. the upper and lower ball joints gave out and according to the mechanic, the brake line was basically the only thing holding the tire on. i didn't know there was anything unusual going on up to this point, as any small steering issues i had were mostly when the car had just been started, so were attributed to cold and ice. the car is currently at the dealer waiting to be fixed, so the old parts should be available.

I am experiencing a rattling sound when driving uphill or downhill through driveway, traveling 5-20 miles an hour. i took my jeep 2002 liberty 2wd to get serviced and received recommended repairs: prosteer control arm with ball joint upper center, remove and install propeller shaft to replace universal joints on both ends, rear wheel bearings, tail pipe is welded to muffler, muffler does not meet design specifications and should be replaced due to exhaust leak as well, remove rack and pinion, complete rack as does not meet design specifications and is leaking. i was driving about 25 mph and my rear right side tire was smoking profusely. i pulled over and noticed the gray smoke from my tire. i took the car to check the rear breaks. they were fine but was told that i had a leak from the exhaust pipe which dripped on to that area. the car has 75,806 miles. i was told that i could loose control of vehicle and entire area can collapse during traffic due to these issues. aside from these issues, i am experiencing a whistling sound, problems with rear drivers side passenger power window regulator which produces grind-like sound. the window came off and i was told that i needed a new regulator for the window. i'm also experiencing a red stain in engine oil drippage on ground. finally, strange odor from car -odor continues to be present whether i wash the carpets and seats (smells like mold/mildew or skunk).

On 09/08/2008, the vehicle(2002 jeep liberty sport), was being driven at a slow rate of speed approximately 5mph exiting right out of a parking lot. it was at this time the drive of the vehicle heard a loud pop or cracking noise. the vehicle jerked forward and then came to a stop at which time the driver struggled to move the vehicle to the side of the road out of traffic. the driver then exited the vehicle and discovered the tire was folded under the vehicle. the driver noticed a broken part that was later determined to be the upper ball joint. had this incident occurred at a higher rate of speed maintaining vehicle control would have been impossible causing injury to the driver or to other motorists. it should be noted this vehicle received a recall for a similar part in 11/2006, the lower ball joint. this recall and all other recalls had been completed according to jeep records. the owner is currently awaiting an estimate for repair. *tr

02/17/2005720001
I bought my 2002 jeep liberty used in 2005. my excitement over the new used vehicle was shortly lived. before i could even make a payment my vehicle had a major problem. my mother was driving it on a paper route in the country early in the morning when she went to pull away from the mailbox she said the car would no longer move. she proceeded to get out and saw the lower control arm and the tire hanging there. she had to walk and knock a strangers door at 6 in the morning to call a tow truck. it was towed to a local mechanic that then investigated recalls on the liberty and found that it was a recall. it was then towed to jeep and i was informed about being reimbursed for the towing by diamond chrysler which i never was. it was fixed and my window washer fluid reservoir was busted and so was my wheel well which was also replaced. then i still had the same noise that i had before this so i called jeep but they told me if they looked at it and it wasn't the ball joint/control arm then they would charge me and i didn't have the money so i didn't take it in. then in 2006 i got the recall notice from jeep and had it replaced again. i am still continuously having the same problem. i here the same loud popping noise when i turn hard and you can tell it still isn't right. i saw this investigation and i feel that i should inform you so we can get these vehicles either fixed or off the road. there are several complaints on blogs about the liberty's and i feel my money has been wasted with this malfunction of a vehicle. i am truly scared for my safety and others. there were the original sets, then the first recall, and then a second recall with no solution to the problem. please please help! *tr

I have a 2002 jeep liberty. the ball joint separated and caused me to crash into a cement wall on i-77 in west virginia. i picked up the car after it was repaired in wv and brought it home. i had to have more work done after i got back because it still was not right. the ball joints have been replaced at least 4 times. i was told by one of the mechanics that they were still using the joints that were causing the problem because they had not figured out how to re-design them. the last time i had it repaired they (hopefully) put ones on that are a new design. i have had to have it towed because it was unsafe to drive because the joint was so bad -- i check it regularly! my insurance company is progressive. chrysler settled with them and paid for all the repairs after the crash. *tr

I began to hear a knocking sound in the front right wheel well when i hit little cracks and bumps in the road. lifted it at a mechanics shop and found the upper ball joint was about to fail. had to buy a new one so i wouldn't lose control while driving. i inspected the old one and found the ball could nearly have complete separation. *tr

A vehicle recall was issued on my 2002 jeep liberty. there has been no failure, accident or injury as of the date of this complaint. the recall is titled safety recall f-23--lower ball joints. i first received notice of the recall some time in september of 2006. i made an appointment with my dealer and took the vehicle in. the dealer indicated they were having problems getting the ball joint parts from chrysler. chrysler was not releasing enough parts. i have called several times since then with the same response. this past week, i went in to the dealer and inquired again. the dealer informed me that he had a stack of other customers as well (he showed me the stack of work orders). he indicated he has called chrysler to complain about the lack of parts. chrysler keeps providing the same song and dance, namely that the parts will be shipped. when he asked what he is supposed to tell his customers, the dealer was given the blunt reply, tell them the parts will be shipped. no date was given for shipping. having worked for a vehicle manufacturer as general counsel and having been involved in recall matters, i find this lack of attention to this recall particularly disturbing. frankly, i want my vehicle fixed and fixed now. my wife and i have a newborn son and i am very nervous about taking any of the family in a vehicle that could have a failure in the ball joints that chrysler says can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. *nm

I was never notified about my 2002 jeep liberty recall on the front ball joints. luckily i just pulled into a parking lot and was only going about 5 miles per hour and the ball joint on the drivers side fell out. i heard a big clunk and then couldn't move the car, the inside rim was all gouged. had it towed to the dealer and was told about the recall on it. i purchased my jeep in dec 03 and this recall was nov 03, the dealer should have replaced them prior to selling it. *nm

Jeep always pulls to the right. problem was supposed to be resolved with ball joint replacement procedure from a recall, but it still exists. dealer performed a wheel alignment (which he suspected was needed), but problem still exists. replaced original tires with only 20,000km (probably due to compensating for pulling to the right) - consider this a safety issue because you always have to compensate for the pull. *nm

I have a popping noise in the front end of my 2002 jeep liberty 4wd. i took it to jeep and after 2 days they took the front end apart and put it back together and the problem got much better but not completely gone. is there a recall on this and do other people have this problem. my car has 55,000 miles on it. *nm

Within a year and a half, i had three windshield replacements. insurance agent said with that many replacements, could be defect. every time jeep hit bump, would squeak. took two dealerships 5 attempts to fix. paint was peeling on grill, had repainted. jeep constantly pulls to the right. have had alignment and tire rotations, still not fixed. latest, all four aluminum wheels are corroding due to them being manufactured with aluminum and steel. according to the dealership, the rims have been redesigned, but because my mileage is over 36, 000 miles, they are charging to replace them even though a dealer at the same dealership was having the exact same problem and had his replaced at no cost. field district manager refuses to speak to me, who made the decision for me to pay. can someone please guide me in the right direction. i need help. cgray78@aol.com. *jb

The suspension is so low in the front (only measures 5) that when you drive off road the rocks/sand fill up the skid plate and if left there could rub holes in the oil pan/mess up the boots on the suspension and possibly stop the suspension from functioning. if driving on slushy/frozen roads the vehicle would becme a ski. is this an off-road vehicle as advertized or is it strickly an asphalt vehicle.*ak

Have experienced harmonic noise and vibration in the floor board and center console. the vibration and noise are most apparent when decelerating from a higher speed down through 50 to 55 mph. the vibration and noise sound as if you have knobby all terrain tires on the vehicle when in fact you do not. the dealer had the vehicle for two days and made every effort to identify the vibration and noise. they found a slightly out of balance wheel, but the vibration and noise remain. since then, i have driven two other jeep liberty vehicles, both of them having similar vibration and noise. perhaps i have a discriminating ear being an engineer, but that does't explain why passengers also feel the vibration and hear the noise. i guess i am fortunate to have the 7 year/ 100,000 mile warranty on the drive train. *ak

Since purchasing this 2002 jeep liberty for my 23 year old daughter it has pulled to the left when the steering wheel was released. it was returned to the jeep dealer several times for repair. each time it was realigned and was ok for a time then started to pull to the left again. we also replaced the tires trying to eliminate problem, which continued until the 3/31/05 accident. my daughter was traveling down the highway on 3/31/05 a sunny dry day in new britain ct when she suddenly lost control of her jeep and side swiped the jersey barrier. although this can't be proved without more investigation, i believe the lower control arm , which is casted not pressed steel, had a partial crack that totally failed at the time of the accident. the failure caused loss of control of the jeep liberty and it side-swiped the jerky barrier. there was about $6,000 damage to the driver's side of the jeep, no other vehicles were involved. the police officer attributed the accident to tire failure, since the 2 driver's side tires were flat. when examining the jeep at the body shop, i noticed the lower control arm was broken. i didn't think the crash was severe enough to cause this to happen. on closer examination of the part it looked to me like the broken edge was about half rusted. to me this indicated a preexisting crack in the casting. i am reporting this incident because i can't proof the jeep's part failed. the jeep is advertised as an off road vehicle and as such should be heavy duty. if this part did fail after only 46,000 miles it could be a manufacturing problem that should be investigated. i am having the body shop save the part for examination. the car has been repaired.*ak

I purchased my 2002 jeep liberty, in july of 2007. it had been running wonderfully. two and a half weeks ago (03/07/08)while driving on the expressway, my drivers side wheel came completely off of my car. i had my jeep towed to kwik kar auto repair. kwik kar informed me that my ball joint had come loose. i had them to repair it and paid out of pocket for both the repair and the tow. on wednesday, march 26, 2008, while driving, again the wheel on my jeep came off, this time on the passenger side. once again, i had my jeep towed to kwik kar. this time the ball joint on the front passenger side had come loose and caused significant damage to the wheel, abs system, etc. the bill for the repair this time was way more than i could afford, so my mechanic checked with chrysler to see if any of the parts were covered. he found that the jeep liberty was under recall notice for this exact same defect. i contacted chrysler and was told that since i did not take my jeep to a chrysler dealership that i would have to pay for the repairs. i was also informed that the nearest chrysler dealer that would honor this recall and fix my car was in arlington, tx which is nearly 20 miles from my home. i was told by the chrysler representative that recall notices were sent out in september of 2006. since i bought my jeep liberty 10 months after the recall notices were sent out, from drivetime auto sales, i never received a notice of recall. i was told to contact the previous owner of my car to get the recall information. so i contacted drivetime auto sales. i was told by drivetime that they are not responsible for checking recall notices on the cars that they sell and that it is chrysler's responsibility to fix my jeep. i again called chrysler customer service and spoke to a supervisor. i was informed that chrysler would not pay for the repairs and if i pay for the repairs, there is no guarantee that i would be reimbursed. *tr lower ball joints*smch

In november of 2006, i had a recall fixed for the front:control arm:lower ball joint when the parts became available. i brought the car back 3 days later having issues with the steering and hearing a noise. the dealership took the car for a few days and did a complete inspection and assured me the new parts were sufficient. every now and then (not constant, but scarcely) when i would turn the wheel just a little, the car would turn as if i had turned my wheel all the way. it scared me a few times, but it didn't happen often at all, so i didn't think much of it. on may 31, 2007, i was merging onto i-91 in connecticut driving only 22 miles per hour, and my car did that very thing. i went up and over the curb, up the embankment and crashed into a steel connecticut state sign. if it wasn't for the sign, i would have continued to lose control and possibly been killed. hitting the sign swung my back end around, where i rolled down the embankment and to a complete stop on the side of the highway. my car sustained over $7,000 worth of damage and has damaged my perfect driving record. no other car was involved and no one was hurt, including myself. i was very fortunate, but i feel there needs to be further investigation into the previous recall and possibly a new recall should be posted to eliminate this problem. the problem still exists despite the recall from last year. *jb

Saturday august 18th 2007 i received a recall notice from daimler chrysler regarding the lower ball joints on 2002-2006 jeep liberties. the recall said water could get into the front suspention causing the ball joint to corrode and separate which could lead to loss of steering and a possible accident. while driving home from work on monday the 20th (2 days later) my front left wheel fell off without warning, causing loss of control and nearly causing an accident (coincidence?). the dealer said that my upper ball joint had corroded and separated and the recent recall would not cover my repair. daimler chrysler said there's nothing they can do and i would be responsible for repairs. i went online and was shocked to find (in only about 20 minutes- so there must be many more) that hundreds of people has the exact same failure with their 02' -06' liberty. although i would like daimler chrysler to take responsibility for the repair, the more important issue is that there seems to be a serious problem with these cars (specifically the ball joints). the recall should definitely include upper ball joints as well. luckily i was only going about 15-20mph (my car was still completely fish-tailed) if i had been doing anything over 40mph i'm certain i would have rolled it. i'm sure there has to be people out there who had family or friends killed in accidents caused by this exact issue...they probably don't even know how widespread the problem is. *tr

My complaint is not in regard to any type of incident, crash or injury. it is in regard to a safety recall i received by mail for jeep liberty on 12/06/06, over 4 months ago. it was safety recall f23 concerning lower ball joints from daimler chrysler, stating the front lower ball joints could corrode & separate due to water, causing the vehicle to lose control of steering, and could cause a crash without prior warning. well anyway, they were to replace it, and i called the same day i got the notice and was put on a waiting list to get this fixed due to backorder of parts. i still have not heard anything ,and i believe this was my 4th time contacting someone about this issue. i have submitted 2 complaints already to the administrator of national highway traffic safety, and now this is what i was e-mailed back and told to do . my biggest concern was the safety of my children and my family. we drive this vehicle on a daily basis, and i not only think it was unfair to us to be endangering our lives, but also the lives of many other drivers if my vehicle was to lose control. i feel that i should be supplied with a rental car via their expense until they can fix this problem. i think 4 months has been very adequate time, and they should have had it resolved by now. recently, we took a road trip and had to rent a car because we were too scared to drive this far through mountains, etc. have to worry about a ball joint blowing out! this is ridiculous & needs to be given priority attention!! aren't you guys supposed to want to keep our roads safe? please get back to me as soon as possible. thanks. *ak

I have a 2002 jeep liberty limited ed. which i had an accident in last year2006. this accident was due to a recall of the ball joint. i didn't recieve the recall letter until 2 weeks after my accident that made me tottaly unaware of any problems. i turned the accident over to my ins. co. to fight while my car sat at the dealership where i bought the vehicle. accident details: at aprox. 45 mph the wheels locked up due to the ball joint rod rubbing a hole on the inside of the wheel housing bringing the car wheels to lock up. ( any faster the car probably would have flipped. it took 3.5 months of my ins. co. arguing with chrysler over the issue before they accepted responsiblity even though it was obvious fault. my concern now is i went to trade in the car this week and the damage over $2500 majorily reduced the value of my vehicle. (which i did express after the accident) i was offered only$5000 with normal trade in would go for $8000-$9000. ( the low trade in value i was told by the sales manager due to the accident) i feel chryslers delay of fault and non-compensation of vehicle value loss is very poor business, especially them being a large financially stable automotive manufacture dishonest with a middle class chrysler driver/worker. i would like for chrysler to fully handle a failure on there part to compensate for all financial details of my accident. i would like to express one more issue! i feel they did not take any hurry to inform drivers of the serious vehicle issue that could have very easily caused a fatality. date is not exact i need to get it from ins co>

September, 2006 i received a recall notice on my 2002 jeep liberty regarding the lower ball joints. i called the dealership where i had purchased my jeep and was told that they had sold the franchise to another dealership. i then called this dealership and was told that they were only receiving 3 replacement parts at a time and i would have to be placed on a waiting list of approximately 2 weeks. i waited for about a month and called them again to make sure they hadn't lost my information. i was told that i was third on the list. i waited another month and called again. i was told by the serviceman that i was still on the waiting list, but they had jeeps coming in weekly that the wheels had fallen off and they took first preference. it is now another month and i have not heard from them yet. if the situation is a s serious as wheels falling off as often as the serviceman has indicated, then daimler chrysler should do more to improve getting the replacement parts to dealerships. if the dealership is just putting me off because they are too busy to deal with the recalls, then something should be done. the dealership is lewis pontiac buick gmc jeep, 830 e. main st., oak hill, wv, phone 304-465-3111. *nm

Thanks god there was no crash or damage yet. i've found out that it is recommended to fulfill safety recall for my jeep liberty. i called moscow dealer musa-motors (www.musa-motors.ru) and they say that they do not do recalls on holidays they only do the work, which will cost me money. it is not good because f23 recall - is lower ball joints replacement that means safety. and if something happens to me or my family you'll be in charge of. that's why, i'm asking to stop musa-motor's dealing license as a jeep dealer. *nm

My jeep liberty 2002 was recalled for replacement of possible ball joint corrosion. i called the dealership don white's timonium jeep dealer, and was advised that the dealership receives only 3 sets from jeep per week and i would therefore be waiting for approximately 6 months for the replacement. i felt this was not timely. i called the daimler chrysler question line and was told the same info. i do not think any recall for safety issues should wait for months to repair. surely ball joints can be acquired form another source? *nm

I received a safety recall f23 from daimler chrysler stating that there was a problem with the lower ball joints on my 2002 jeep liberty. my wife called and had the part ordered from a local dealer. it was ordered on 11-16-6 at 430pm. i was driving to work on 12-1-06, in my 2002 jeep liberty, and lost control of the jeep while heading southbound on hwy 43 (in wisconsin). as i lost control of the vehicle, i attempted to correct the wheel direction, but had no success. the jeep was out of control. the jeep went perpendicular with the lanes and ended up flipping over. i was the restrained driver while the jeep flipped one complete roll and came to a stop in the ditch. i was alert enough to call 911, and was picked up by paramedics and taken to saint nicholas hospital in sheboygan, wi. after being discharged from the emergency room, i called the garage at which my jeep was towed. they informed me that my jeep has been totaled. i would like this complaint to go on file and would like to know how this problem will be rectified. i am still awaiting a call from the dealership to inform me that my part has come in, but i no longer am able to drive this vehicle. please advise me as to my next step. i am expecting a call from my state farm agent on monday and will update them to this matter. my injuries were minor, but i am now short a vehicle. i would like to know how jeep will be handling this situation and how i should be handling this. please call or email me with information. thanks, larry thomas. *nm

My son was driving a 2002 jeep liberty when the steering wheel jammed on him approaching a curve he slammed the brakes but the vehicle kept skidding until it invaded the other side of the road hit a tree(if not for the tree he would have fallen off the mountain side!!). in no moment did the air bags activate. about 3 or 4 days later i received a safety recall notice f23 - lower ball joints that indicated the ball joints could corrode & separate resulting in a loss of the steering control. i got in contact with the company where they ask for pictures of the accident (which i e-mailed to them) but cannot repair the vehicle (or will forfeit any claims they say)therefore leaving me with no transportation and still having to pay the bank the car loan. i asked the daimler chrysler rep if there was some kind of car assistance program in a couple of occasions and have received no reply plus i have been informed that an appraisal will be done in about 2 weeks from now. is there anyway this process can be sped up or aren't they suppose to lend me a vehicle until this is resolved? *jb

I received a recall notice form daimler chrysler regarding the replacement of the lower ball joints of my 2002 jeep liberty. this is the second recall for the same issue! i scheduled a service appointment with the closest five star chrysler dealership to perform the recall. when i arrived at the dealership today, i was told that they could not perform the safety recall because i did not purchase the vehicle from them. they stated that there was a limited number of ball joints available and that i would have to return to the dealer in which i purchased the vehicle from. that dealership is over an hour from where i currently live, as i have moved since purchasing the car. the dealership that refused to perform the daimler chrysler recall is: hayes dodge chrysler jeep 719 w pike street lawrenceville, ga 30045 i find it absolutely unacceptable that a dealership would refuse to perform a company safety recall, therefore putting myself and my family at risk. *nm

Took my vehicle to the dealership to get oil change, tires rotated, and the 23 point inspection. told them at the time of the noise vehicle was making. ended up having to replace the front two tires and paying to get them balanced and aligned as well. was told that if the noise continues to bring it back. sounds and noise got worse over the next day so took it in the following day. was told that the problem was the ball joints that are on recall and so all they would need to do is replace those and there would be no costs. i was then told that the kits were not working and they had tried two different ones from two different dealerships. i was then told that to make them work they would need to replace the steering knuckles and it would cost me about $800 to get this done. i refused to pay for this when the steering knuckles were not damaged and the ball joints were the manufacturers mistake, so they needed to find some ball joints that worked or fix the problem. i was then told today that they were sent the steering knuckles and the ball joints worked with this replacement and they would give me a discount of $628, of which i can't afford. the manufacturer will not talk to me and the customer service is like talking to an automated answering service. the manager at the dealership is to call me in the morning if he could do anything else for me, which does not look promising at all. my issue is i should not have to pay for a part that was not damaged just so the recalled parts of ball joints can fit on my vehicle that they were originally supposed to fit. *jb

There had been some occasional front end squeaking but not enough to take notice. several weeks ago i was informed by my mother that certain jeeps had been recalled. we went to jeep's website put in the vin as the page requested and were unable to find a record. one saturday morning i called a local jeep dealership to ask if i could bring it in and have them check it. the dealership said that it would not do any good because jeep had not released any information about the recall and that i would have to wait until early september and a letter would be sent advising of the recall. sunday, august 20, 2006 i was taking our daughter to work and heard an awful thud and the jeep lurched to a stop. i had to leave it in the middle of the street and use our other vehicle to take our daughter to work. when i arrived home, my partner told me that she contacted her brother and he said it sounded like it was the ball joint. i tried to move it and the ball joint broke and damaged the tire and the grey material over the tire. i contacted jeep's headquarter as well as a local dealership and it was at that time that we were informed that this vehicle had been recalled and repaired in march of 2004 (it was a ball join issue at that time as well). this was not reflected on our carfax report. *jb

My 2002 jeep liberty began to make a noise from the right front tire area. i called the dealer to make an appointment, explained the problem and was given an appointment about 10 days out. about half way between making the appointment and the day of the appointment while pulling away from a stop sign the lower ball joint on the right front side of the vehicle broke apart dropping that side of the car down on to the tire. in the process of trying to get the vehicle up on to the flatbed tow truck the tire did some damage to the plastic part of the fender surrounding the wheel well. the vehicle was dropped at the dealer (seacoast motors) for repairs at about 5:30 pm on 8/2/06. as of this writing (8/3/06 @ 1 pm) they have not looked at the vehicle or confirmed the actual problem so i am without a vehicle for an undetermined amount of time at this point. *jb

While turning right into a parking lot at about 5 miles per hour in my 2002 jeep liberty, i experienced a catastrophic failure of the lower ball joint on the right side. the ball joint dropped and the bolt at the bottom of the ball joint struck and severely dug into my jeep chrome alloy wheel. this all took place while traveling at about 5 miles per hour and traveling only about 10 feet. i had the vehicle towed to the dealership where it was purchased new. please note that i did have the vehicle serviced at regular intervals. i had also received a recall notice in the past and when i questioned my dealership about it, they stated that it did not pertain to my vehicle. *jb

Ball joint failure on 2002 jeep liberty - recall had been performed in october 2004 by szott jeep dealership. i was driving down the road doing 30 mph when the right front appeared to seize up and i started to lose control of the vehicle. i was able to get it stopped and parked safely on the road. upon examination, the tire had become completely removed from the frame. i had it towed to the dealership and it was determined to be a failure of the ball joint. the following damage was incurred to my vehicle: arm-lower control, knuckle, tire, rim, front bumper and quarter panel lose. overall totaling 1500 damage. my insurance picked up the majority of the claim and i paid the deductible of 200.00 plus 36.10 for the ball joint. i am very fortunate this didn't happen 15 minutes later. i was on my way to the airport. given the impact this had at 30 mph i cannot comprehend what would have incurred at 70 mph. myself and my baby where in the car at the time of the occurrence of this accident. the rep from belle tire, the dealership, and dcx told me i was lucky because it would have been a serious accident. *jb

While i was driving my 2002 jeep liberty, the passenger side ball joint separated from the steering knuckle and the whole side of car hit the ground and my jeep skidded about 30 feet then came to a complete stop. i couldn't turn the vehicle in any direction while it was skidding. i was lucky i was only going 20 mph! chrysler is fixing my car at no charge, but my concern is of safety. if this would have happened at a faster speed, on a turn, the car would have gone off the cliff, rolled, and i would not be here today. this is important to note: after the incident, i had the car towed to the dealer. on arrival, they looked up the vin, and informed me that the recall (#03v460000) had already been 'performed' back in 2004. if they fixed it in 2004->why did it break in 2006???!!!! and why are they so quick to fix and pay for it???? seems to me they know that there are still major problems with theirfix back in 2003. scary!!! people that had it fixed right after the recall came out, may still be in danger!! the parts used in the original recall must have been defective!!!! here is the whole story: 1. rubbing/grinding noise coming from front of car. very random and inconsistent. happened while turning steering wheel at a stop, while driving, heard noise when applying brakes, etc. noise started around march '05. 2. numerous trips to mechanic, couldn't find problem. replaced brakes, resurfaced drums, cleaned out power steering, etc. 3. june '06, did google searches to see if there were any known issues with the '02 jeep liberty. found there were ball joint problems. also found recall #03v460000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). 4. scheduled appt. with dealership to get recall #03v460000 performed. 5. ball joint broke before appt. with dealership. 6. had car towed to dealership. 7. dealership said recall was already performed. 8. rep. told dealership chrysler will extend warranty to cover this work. *nm

2002 jeep liberty, lower left ball joint failed. vehicle was traveling at approx. 35 mph going straight ahead when the ball joint separated. the joint settled into the inside of the front wheel damaging the wheel and the wheel contacted the rear of the inner fender damaging the fender liner. no other apparent damage, driver was able to get the liberty stopped off the road way. towed the jeep to the dealership. they replaced both front lower ball joints free of charge, ordered a replacement wheel and inner fender also to be installed for free. this vehicle had the lower ball joints replaced once before under the initial recall. absolutely no faith in the manufacturer to actually resolve these failures. i fully expect to have them replaced again in the future. *nm

 1. i had driven the vehicle all day prior to the incident without any noticeable irregularities. on the morning of the failure, monday, june 12th, 2006, i had just started the morning commute to the babysitters with my 1-year-old daughter and had been on the highway for about a mile driving between 55 and 65 mph when the failure occurred. 2. the failure was initially thought to be a flat tire (front driver side), although i had never experienced a flat tire that slowed a vehicle so fast and jerked the car so suddenly. i honestly feared that the vehicle might flip or roll over, and seeing other cars nearby in my rearview mirror, the safety of myself, my daughter, and other drivers was my initial concern. i can only imagine how bad this might have turned out in the winter on a snowy surface or even just a rain soaked surface. once i got the vehicle slowed down and onto the shoulder, i attempted to change the destroyed tire. it wasn't until after getting all of the lug nuts off of the wheel that i realized there was a bigger problem. the wheel would not budge. 3. i called a tow truck and had the vehicle towed to the nearest local tire store (tires plus). that is when they diagnosed the broken left lower ball joint which had separated and became lodged into the wheel and destroyed the wheel. i had tires plus replace the ball joint, order a new (conditioned) wheel, and replace the tire. later they discovered that the lower right ball joint was loose/had movement and advised me to have it replaced along with a second new tire as well. i am assuming this steering/suspension issue caused excessive wear to the two front tires. i authorized the repairs and am now out a little over $1200. internet research today led me to many incidents involving jeep liberty lower ball joint failures and an ongoing investigation. no help/consolation/reimbursement was obtained on the phone with daimler chrysler. they basically said sorry, there's nothing we can do. *jb

We were returning home to canada from a holiday in california through the redwood forest and several other mountainous/cliff side highways. while driving on the highway in washington state we heard a thump and then the left front tire blew out. the truck was very difficult to steer off the road. when we tried to jack up the truck, to change the tire, we realized it was something far more serious. the left ball joint stem was stuck through the aluminum rim. the control arm was also broken. there was over 200 feet of rubber laid while trying to stop and corkscrews of aluminum from the wheel all over the highway. this all happened with 22,377km driven. the ball joints were then replaced again with the recall in nov/2003. on may 4/06 the ball joint separated again while pulling onto the street from a parking lot. this time we are out of warranty @145,534km. the repairs/towing amounted to approx. $700. the bills have been forwarded to daimler chrysler canada for reimbursement. this is an obvious manufacturing defect this truck has never been driven off road. *jb

2002 jeep liberty limited traveling at 50 mph heard a loud bang and vehicle appeared to have a blow out on the front passenger side tire. maintained control of the vehicle and pulled off road. when attempting to replace wheel, it was discovered that the lower ball joint was broken. the vehicle was towed to a near jeep dealer, the full damage was identified including new wheel, tire, seals and mechanical parts. total cost estimated at $ 1400 the lower ball joints were previously replaced under a factory recall aug 27, 2004, 20 months and approximately 29000 miles earlier than this incident judging by the number of similar repeat failures posted with nhtsa, this appears to be a generic issue with the replacement parts used during the recall or the design. the dealer, not our normal service dealer, will not repair under warranty, even though the ball joints were replaced during the recall. attempting to get daimler chrysler jeep customer assistance to accept responsibility for the repeat failure and repair under warranty but not successful yet. in the interim, have personally approved repairs as need vehicle. *jb

While turning right into a parking lot at about 5 miles per hour in my 2002 jeep liberty, i experienced a catastrophic failure of the lower ball joint on the right side. the ball joint dropped and the bolt at the bottom of the ball joint struck and severely dug into my 5 month old jeep chrome alloy wheel. this all took place at traveling about 5 miles per hour and traveling only about 10 feet. i just had the vehicle towed to a local repair facility for repair. please note that i did have the vehicle serviced at 20,005 miles in response of the lower ball joint recall, at which time the ball joints were replaced and heat shields installed to avoid future failure of the ball joints. the vehicle now has 38,600 miles, which means these new ball joints only lasted 18,600 miles, with absolutely no off road driving! i will be calling the jeep dealership this monday morning for their input and hopefully support of making good on this severe failure. i thank god that this failure took place at 5 miles an hour and not while on the highway as i know that i may very well have been killed. *nm

A recall was assured on 2002 jeep liberty's in 2003, on the lower ball joint assembly. the information i have, shows my jeep liberty to have this fixed in march of 2004. i do not have information on the mileage at that time, but in feb. of 2005 it had 35341 miles. i found out today that the jeep is having the same problem, with the replacement they used from the first recall. the jeep has only 46770 on it currently. it seems unreal that the lower ball joints would go bad twice under 50000 miles unless there is still is a problem. *jb

I purchased my 2002 jeep liberty in dec. 05. i noticed a shimmy when depressing the brakes immediately after buying it. it had 44000 miles on it. i thought this was normal since the dealership had done a safety inspection on it before selling it to me. i noticed in mid april that the inside driver tire was almost completely worn. i took it to a local garage only to find that my lower ball joints were bad, along with the front rotors being warped beyond repair. this cost me $1100 in repairs, including the 3 new tires i purchased! my extended warranty i purchased would not cover the cost to repair. i wrote daimler chrysler a complaint, in which they declined. i am furious after reading all the consumer complaints about ball joints failing on the liberties - even after having been fixed after the recall. a vehicle with this few miles should not have these problems!!! *jb

My 2002 jeep liberty had a re call in 2003 for ball joints, i had them replaced in march 2004. on april 2, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. i was traveling east bound on i-465 doing 55-60 mph, when a loud noise was coming from the front of the vehicle and then the jeep was starting to loose control as i tried to slow down and proceed to the side of the interstate. i got out of my vehicle and call roadside assistance, during my wait a gentleman stopped to see if i needed help, and i informed him that i thought i had blown a tire, he looked under my car to notice that my ball joint had broke along with my axle and rim, i had it towed to crossroads lincoln/jeep mercury, where on monday the service department examined the car and came to the conclusion that the ball joint had broke along with the axle and the rim of the tire. i had already contacted my insurance company along with filing a complaint to chrysler, they sent out an inspector and after his review came to the conclusion that the ball joints separated due to impact, there was no impact, i controlled the vehicle to the best of my ability so that there would be no impact, causing injury. it has been 24 days now without my vehicle and i am in a rental vehicle, american family is refusing to pay for the repair of the ball joints and so is chrysler. i do not want to file a law suit against chrysler, but they are leaving me no choice, as this was a costly repair, what can i do???????????*jb

At approximately 1745 hours (mst) on the below date i was driving my 2002 jeep liberty limited at 30 mph on a two lane asphalt city street. the pavement was dry, there were no potholes or any road defects or obstructions. suddenly i heard a loud, metallic thump followed immediately by the vehicle pulling sharply to the right with no steering control. the vehicle came to a stop with minimal braking and the use of the right street curb. inspection first noted the right front tire to be flat (it was dark). after raising the vehicle on the jack i removed the right front wheel and installed the spare tire. i then attempted to drive the vehicle forward and again, after approximately 2 feet of driving, i heard a scrapping sound. i immediately stopped and inspected the spare wheel. i then noticed that the right front lower ball joint had failed and was digging into the inside of the right front wheel rim. i then called to have the vehicle towed to the nearest jeep dealer. subsequently i was advised that both front ball joints were replaced and that the impact was of such force when the ball joint failed that the front axle seals had been damaged and were replaced. the wheel was replaced because the force was such that the failed ball joint gouged a hole in the wheel rim. it is noteworthy that on may 17, 2004 under job order 1034728 both front ball joints were replaced on this same vehicle at the uftring jeep dealership in e. peoria, illinois (309) 694-0700 due to a campaign recall previously ordered from jeep corporate. i now considered this vehicle unsafe since the previous recall did not remedy the situation and i have no guarantee from jeep that the most recently installed set of ball joints will not fail in the future. *nm

I own a jeep liberty 2002 and it has 54600 miles, last week i heard a noise in the steering, i took to the dealer service center here in venezuela closest to my home and explained the problem the check the car and call me back that the only thing needed was an oil change, satisfied i took my car and planned a weekend family trip out of town and drove another 200 miles at high way speeds when returning home at very low speed passes a speed reducer bump on the street by my home and the left front wheel felt off, the lower ball joint broke!, i was on shock if this would happened few miles before all of my family including me could be killed in a car accident, and the worse part is that i took to the dealer just before to prevent this kind of issues and they just didn't care about i found out today at some of the jeep chat rooms that it is a proven problem and that there is a recall on this issue for this models, we were very close of been harmed or may been killed, my report is to make sure you correct this on your country at least and you may safe some other family lives i know that the regulations on venezuela fall way behind in order to introduce a legal complaint against daimler chrysler here and i wont get any progress over here but at least i put a little sand grain to avoid any incidents were i know that can be avoided. *jb

My wife was pulling into the driveway at a low rate of speed and heard a clicking noise and stopped the vehicle halfway into the drive way. got out and ran inside to get me and i went and looked at the car and there was no obvious damage so i got in and put the car in drive and it didn't move and then in reverse and the same thing, so i put in drive again and thats when the front right end of the car dropped to the ground. after inspection i noticed that the front right lower ball joint wasn't in the ball joint knuckle anymore. the wheel was bent outward. i just bought this car on aug. 29, 2005 just 3 months prior. i have only put 3,000 miles on this car since i bought it. the dealer should have inpected the ball joints prior to selling it to me seeing how there is a prior recall on that part. luckily i have it on warranty so hopefully there won't be any problems with getting it repaired. repairs still pending. *nm

Right front wheel fell off of jeep while driving into a parking lot with no warning. wheel damaged suspension, body and rim. the jeep dealer did the repairs under warranty even though the recall had already been done once before in 2003. this will be the 3rd set of lower ball joints in 75000 miles. other jeep owners that have had the recall done should not assume their vehicle front suspension is in safe condition. something needs to be done here. *jb

My 2002 jeep liberty was taken in for service because of oil leaking from the right side of the front differential and a torn boot on the left side. these items were repaired and the vehicle returned to me. one month later while backing out of a parking space i heard a loud snap and then felt the left front end of the vehicle drop to the ground. the front wheel was forced up under the wheel well damaging the fender and blowing the tire. the lower ball joint had separated letting the vehicle drop and wheel to move up into the wheel well. the ball joint recall had been completed on this vehicle 30,000 miles ago. this was very scary because i had my 4 year old grandson with me and had just been on the freeway traveling at 65 mph. the vehicle is still at the dealer and i am waiting to see what chrysler/jeep has to say. ld. *nm

On june thursday 9:00 am 16th i call the dealer to look at my jeep liberty because the steering was very stiff and hard to control the vehicle. i was told by the service manager that i could not get my car in until monday the 20th three days later. i told the service manager that i needed to travel to ohio on business and that i could not wait. he had no response other than i should not drive the car until someone had looked at it. i then call a local garage who told me that could get my car that morning. they found and documented that the lower ball joints seem to be the problem even though they could see through the chrysler recall website that i had taken the liberty in gregory chrysler plymouth jeep prior to this for the recall which should have fixed this problem. i think maybe this work was billed but never done and i have no way to prove this. (i would like to know how many libertys have seen this recall problem twice) they greased the ball joint so that i could drive the car again. on sept 7th i took the car in to the jeep deal who told me that they would not cover the replacement of the ball joints because i had someone else help me out when they could not. so the question remains, does the lower ball joint recall really fix the problem or is this dealer just scanning people on the work that is suppose to be covered? it is either one or the other. *nm

First problem: on march 31, 2004, we took my 2002 jeep liberty to the jeep dealer due to a loud squeaking noise in the front. they diagnosed a bad lower ball joint on the left front side and replaced it. note - my jeep had the lower front ball joints serviced under a recall notice at the end of 2003. it was supposed to have had the lower ball joints replaced and a heat shield installed. second problem: without warning on july 28, 2005, the front right lower ball joint broke while attempting to drive the jeep into our garage, and the front end collapsed onto the pavement and the disconnected wheel. there was no noise or any indication of a problem before this happened. the events leading up to this: i started up the engine, backed the jeep up a few feet to straighten my approach, and attempted to pull it into the garage. however, i noticed a strong resistance to roll forward so i stopped, got out and looked around to make sure i wasn't running over something. after seeing nothing in the way or under the vehicle, i tried again to pull forward, but it wouldn't roll and the wheel skid. so i put it into reverse and tried to back up. that is when the front end dropped with a load crunch onto the wheel that had came off. the jeep dealer paid for the new ball joint and several other parts that were damaged due to the incident. another problem: on december 12, 2003, the right rear seat belt latch had to be replaced because the release button was jamming (sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't). *nm

Sept. 9, 2004: the vehicle (2002 jeep liberty) went the dealer for a safety recall replacement of the front lower ball joints. the dealer replaced the ball joints per the safety recall. aug. 1, 2005: the front lower ball joint on the right-front wheel failed. when this happened, the ball portion of the ball joint separated from the socket causing the right-front wheel to seemingly fall off. prior to the failure, it was noted on july 31, 2005 that the vehicle pulled to the right slightly when the brakes were applied. the ball joint failure occurred on a flat, smooth parking lot at low speed. no bodily injuries occurred. the dealer and the manufacturers representative have agreed to replace the ball joint and repair the damage caused by the failure. however, the dealer and manufacture will not certify in any way that the new parts have been inspected and are free from defect. it is important to note that it is the safety recall replacement part that failed. i do not believe that diamler chrysler has resolved the problem(s) that led to the initial recall. i do not feel safe with their proposed fix to my vehicle. *nm

I ordered my jeep liberty 7/01 and picked it up 9/01. the morning of 4/4/04 i was driving home and started crashing into trees. the car was spinning, back and forth across the road - hit 3 trees, mailboxes and a telephone pole (hard enough that even though it was the last thing that i hit, it moved enough that it tore the cables out of someone's house). about 50 feet before the 1st tree, was my front passenger tire and about 2 feet of the axle (or whatever holds the rim and tire on the truck). the front of the truck from the right front quarter panel to 1/3 across the front of the truck is up inside the dashboard, the back driver's tire is blown out, the spare tire on the back is smashed, the 2 passenger side doors are smashed and the entire truck is off the frame. i told the tow driver and police about the recall that i'd just gotten that stated that the a ball joint that has separated from the knuckle could result in loss of vehicle directional control and could result in a crash. i had an appointment to get it fixed 4/6/04...the accident was 4/4/04. my injuries: airbags didn't go off but i was wearing my seatbelt. i broke my arm (8 weeks in cast, 6 weeks in a brace and i'm still in physical therapy. standard seatbelt bruise that lasted more than 3 weeks, and the associated pain. my insurance is covering my medical and the replacement of the car (with financing, it paid exactly what i owed). so, even though jeep knew about the need for a recall in october 2003, i wasn't notified until march 2004. it was a clear dry night. i was awake and coherent, not speeding or drinking, and paying attention when i suddenly lost control. in fact, it's damn lucky that i was only going 35-40. jeep claims they're not responsible. all i want is for them to admit that they were at fault. if they'd sent the recall notice in a timely manner, back in 10-11/03, it would have been fixed prior to another winter of snow and sleet and crap getting into that joint to corrode it! *la

I currently own a 2002 jeep liberty. as i was making a turn in the parking lot my car stopped and i saw my tire bent under my car the ball joints in my jeep liberty went 2 times on me. first the lower ball joints before the recall and then the upper ball joints the control arm and the axle failed on me just yesterday. the upper ball joint failure also caused a large puncture in my rotor and it bent my axle. i fear for the other jeep liberty owners; for instance what if this happened on a major highway causing the driver to lose total control? someone could have lost their life. this upper ball joint issue should be researched and recalled. *jb

Recall #009v119000 dated apr 09, 2009 expected to begin october 2009 covering 2002 jeep liberties excludes the state of louisiana - condition described in the recall exactly describes the problem with my vehicle. since chrysler is aware that this condition does exist, why does it exclude the state of louisiana. the front suspension upper control arm ball joint may experience a loss of lubrication which could lead to corrosion, accelerated wear & possible separation while driving. consequence: failure of the ball joint could result in a loss of steering capability, increasing the risk of a crash. previous recall on lower ball joint has been taken care of. *tr

My daughter was driving and turning into a parking lot, as she was turning left to park the car, she said something happened. she got out of the car to find the drivers side wheel had collapsed. the upper ball joint broke or separated causing the tire to collapse. this caused the jeep to be totally disabled and i'm sure will be a very expensive repair. what is even scarier is that this could have happened on the highway and something much worse could have occurred. how unsafe is this vehicle!!! please look into this vehicle. the suv has not been repaired yet. it is still being looked at. i noticed that this is not the only complaint about this problem. please take care of this so that our families are not in danger! *tr

*tr

After having satisfied not one, but two recalls on the 2002 jeep liberty renegade for lower ball joint issues, the upper ball joint on the driver side failed as i pulled into my driveway at a 45 degree angle. the tire fell into the ball joint, stopping the jeep (moving at 5 mph) in its tracks. i am very thankful this did not occur on the highway at 70 mph not 10 minutes earlier. slight noises were coming from under the vehicle and had just gotten a bit worse a day or two before the failure (although it was driving normally), so i was about to schedule an appointment for it. fortunately, nobody was hurt, the car itself is fine too, well, other than the missing wheel... parts will be replaced tomorrow at my expense - i am attempting to work with the service manager and likely chrysler directly to be reimbursed for the obvious flaw. a 4 1/2 year old vehicle with 65k miles driven normally should not simply fall apart like this - warning to all jeep liberty owners to have all upper and lower ball joints inspected regularly (at least annually) for this dangerous condition.

*jb

Jeep, liberty purchased in march 2003. on saturday july 15, 2006 vehicle was be drove home on a common route. while negotiating an s-turn at an estimated 40 mph, the upper ball joint failed causing the right front wheel to fold under the front of the vehicle. being a good driver with no accidents, i managed the vehicle under control while also not hitting the brakes thus leaving a 261 ft skid mark ( i do have a picture). i have a very good mechanical background and after further survey have concluded that the upper-ball joint had failed due to rust inside the ball-cup and deterioration of the metal around it( i have a picture). this failure has caused an estimated $1200.00 in damage which includes replacement of all four ball joints the two upper at my request ( never trust a part on the vehicle that has failed once and has a twin brother), plus-a tire and rim, etc. *lower ball joints were on a recall notice but i was never notified by chrysler because of not being in their computer system as a customer. after a web search i found the recall of the ball joints (nice job by chrysler). after exchanging repeated phone calls with the dealership and chrysler, the experts determined that the failure was due to impact. i can honestly say that there is no way this joint failed by impact but i can say it failed due to bad engineering and fatigue which is way too soon considering the vehicles life span. in my opinion, chrysler has failed to come clean with a problem that will soon become very apparent with all it's jeep liberty's!! *nm

4 college freshman could have been killed in a 2002 jeep liberty sport due to ball joint failure. when making a left hand turn at an extremely low rate of speed the left drivers side ball joint snapped causing the tire to buckle inward which caused vehicle to tip and the axle to break. an extended warranty on the vehicle covered the ball joint, axle and rim. what was also damaged because of this malfunction was the moldings that are around the tire and the washer fluid tank, which chrysler will not cover. these damages would not have occured if this vehicles front end did not fail. also this vehicle is maintained properly and timely fashion. it was a parents nightmare coming home from dinner and having 3 frantic messages from a daughter in college in another state 10 hours away from home. i think the least chrysler could have done was to cover these items.

*la

While driving at 45 mph right passenger wheel fell off. consumer was able to pull over to the shoulder. the driver suffered neck injuries, and was transported by ambulance to the hospital. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. mechanic noticed that upper ball joint was corroded and needed to be replaced. *ak consumer was upset that chrysler would only waive the cost of the parts since the vehicle was out of warranty. his wife believed that since the incident occurred as a result of a defective upper ball joint, then chrysler should assume full responsibility. the general manager stated they should be glad that's the only problem they had so far. *ph

SUSPENSION - REAR
06/16/2011
The rear of the my 2002 jeep liberty began bouncing so i took it to my mechanic. he said the jeep body had separated in the back and i needed a new ball joint mounting plate and control arm assembly and that the car was unsafe to drive. the ball joint mounting plate and upper control arm assembly were ordered june 16, 2011. mechanic was told the ball joint mounting plate (part #52128586aa) is on national backorder and ,as of 7/25/11, there are 66 customers waiting for this part. jeep customer service said on 7/28/11 that they are trying to find out if this part is being made because nobody seems to have this part. so the jeep is unsafe due to rear ball joint failure and i have had no car since june 16, 2011 and it is now july 28, 2011. note: there was a national safety recall for 2002 jeep liberty due to front ball joint failure.

Rear end differential/suspension and or brakes/wheels makes grinding noise when front wheels are turned, puting rear wheels in a situation of different tire rotation at low speeds, sounding like rear brakes are dragging. dealer has already replaced rear brakes and turned down drums. noise still exist. dealer stated in writing that they were awaiting a service bulletin to correct defect.*ak

Upon making a slight lane correction at approx. 60 mph, my daughter's 2002 jeep libety began swerving uncontrollably. she felt no resistance to the steering wheel as she tried to stop the swerving. at no time did she apply the brakes. witnesses said it appeared she had a flat tire. eventually, the vehicle entered the grass median and rolled 2.5 or 3.5 times coming to rest on the roof facing on-coming traffic. the complete rear end(tires and differential) separated and ended up approx. 75 feet from the vehicle. the right front axle or cv joint was broken. neither her passenger or her air bags deployed. the driver's seat belt was broken at the end of the motion of the rolling. both occupants were bruised and cut. we believe the axle failed and caused this potentially fatal accident. this vehicle had approx. 3000 miles on it. at 1800 miles the engine had thrown a rod and the engine was replaced completely. the jeep liberty is structurally unsound and of poor design particularly in the area of the rear suspension. daimler-chysler has lowered the suspension in obvious response to roll over incidents.*jb..*ak
SUSPENSION - REAR - SPRINGS - COIL SPRINGS
05/19/20061
Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle was driving at a speed of 25 mph up a hill on wet road conditions when the vehicle spun out of control crashing into a retaining wall. the accident resulted in major damage to the vehicle's body. the contact and an eleven-year-old passenger were both wearing seatbelts at the time, had to go to the hospital for the minor injuries. the police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who sent to a body shop for body work. after receiving the vehicle back from the body shop, the dealer inspected and determined that both the front lower ball joints and rear coil springs needed to be replaced and were completely damaged. the dealer could not determine the cause of the accident but indentified that there was a recall on these components in 2004. the manufacturer was alerted who sent out an inspector to examined the vehicle. the inspector determined that there was no manufacturer defect that caused the accident. the contact expressed that the accident was related to a defect.
