Drove it the night before and it ran perfectly fine. no problems at all. come out to go to work in the morning and turn the key and the engine was knocking really bad. so i turned it off and tried it again and got the same thing again. took it to the mechanic which is 1/8miles away. he replaced the spark plugs and wires and still doing it. he said the engine has full compression. he can't figure out what is wrong with it. not even a 100,000 miles on it yet. very disappointed in jeep... the mechanic said i need a new engine. 3.7l 2003 jeep liberty and it have seen others having this such problem too. jeep need's to step in and do something about it. i will ruin their reputation so bad by social media. friends from all across the country and other countries will find out that jeep is a joke and does not stand behind their vehicle. i will never buy another product from them ever again!!! please jeep step in and do something for us.. recall the engine for these car's!!!!

I was driving on the highway (rt17) heading north, doing about 55 and got off at exit 120 or 121 and as i was driving down the ramp at about 35 mph during rush hour my car just came to a halt. i heard a ding ding, noticed i had no power steering or power brakes and coasted to the side of the ramp. it went from riding with no problems to just dead. i can't even begin to think what would have happened if i was riding in the passing lane or the middle lane of rt. 17 in middletown, ny. i probably would be dead. my son was with me also. i had to have the car towed home and my husband looked at it and told me that the spring had broken and come off and the rocker arm and two clips. we still don't know how much damage has been done to the engine. apparently, and this is from a jeep mechanic. in both the 3.7 and 4.7 engines, the valve seats are steel and the cylinder heads are aluminum and the two metals contract differently and when they do the valve seats fall out of the head. i have seen this problem listed on the internet by so many people that it's unfair that jeep can do this to people. i bought this car with an inheritance , i don't have thousands of dollars to fix it. i have bought the rocker arm, the spring and the clips but still at this time need a rocker arm installer. this car has been kept up on all fluids and changes.

Vehicle stalls when driving. 2003 jeep liberty sport/freedom. when driving, car felt like it was tightening, check engine light came on, rpm dial started spinning like crazy, and the car completely shut down. towed to mechanic, told code registered cam shaft sensor. replaced! picked up vehicle, drove 4 miles, shut down again. if vehicle sits and cools off, it will restart. drove back to mechanic, he replaced cam shaft sensor - thinking it was defective. next morning, on way to work, stalled while driving again. so, three days in a row, same problem. very danagerous!!!!!!. this time code registered computer problems, and he suggested i take to dealer, as code part was covered under federal emmissions warranty. took to dealer on friday, october 22 - 8 days now (also need to do recall work, apparently that's not high on a dealer's list) and he said he can't get it to stall, and his code is registering a transmission issue. i know i'm a 'girl', but it doesn't make sense that the car would completely shut down if the transmission had gear problems. the car completely shuts down! wondering why no recall - seems like other jeep owners have similar problems (reading threads on internet). i think dealer may be trying to save costs, because i told him i no longer feel safe in the vehicle and may trade or sell. he said part is $875, but can't guarantee that is problem, he has to clear all the codes 1st. how does he know the computer isn't kicking out faulty codes at this point? i say this because when we replaced the crank shaft sensor, the computer said it was still bad, although it was a brand new part. and, the mechanic did not get the code the dealer is getting now. seems like jeep has a problem, but no solution. btw, my 7 year/70,000 mile warranty apparently expired on may 24, 2010.

Tl-the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the contact was driving approximately 10 mph, approaching a stop sign. suddenly, the engine completely stalled and rolled backwards. when the emergency brake was engaged the vehicle came to a stop. the engine would not restart and the vehicle was coasted to a safe location and then towed to the dealer where the vacuum hose was replaced. after the repair was performed the failure reoccurred and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who advised that the vehicle be towed to the dealer for diagnosis and repair. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the failure was related to the computerized system and the engine valves. the vehicle was repaired at the cost of $2,300. the failure mileage was 67,000. js

My daughter was driving her 2003 jeep liberty on an interstate in a congested area when it began to shake and died, losing power steering and brakes. she was somehow able to pull over in heavy traffic without having an accident. it was discovered that it was a broken valve spring for an intake valve, similar to many other complaints for jeep libertys. this liberty only has about 60k miles and valve springs should be able to last 150k+ miles. this appears to be a relatively common occurrence for this vehicle and it should be unacceptable for an engine with this low mileage to have valve springs break. an engine failure at high speeds could result in tragedy and property loss.

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. while driving approximately 15 mph, the engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. suddenly, the engine failed without warning. the driver pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road. the engine failed to restart and roadside assistance was called to the scene. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for inspection and the technician replaced the crankshaft sensor. in addition, the front and rear passenger and driver's side power window regulators were replaced twice. the vin was unable to be entered into the system. the failure and current mileages were 57,000.

No warning just driving vehicle as usual and engine stalled in traffic, now i am told i need a new engine and after researching have found several other incidents on the net for similar failures, oil has been changed regularly, engine does have a little over 100,000 miles but this shouldn't just happen, others have indicated something about the valve seat slipping causing such problems i don't know. *tr

Details: driving home on a very cold night; had car running about 15 min before getting on the roadway. while driving at 40 mph, my engine died. no warning light of any kind came on. total lock up of gas/break and engine shut off. coasted to shoulder. jeep would not restart. called a towing company and had it towed home, and then to jeep dealership next day. they requested oil change receipts which i am tracking down from various oil change locations and gave me no answer to what the actual problem was when i periodically called to check in. do i have any rights here? 7/70,000 full warranty and all they are telling me is i need receipts. i am afraid they will deny claim anyway, as several other postings indicate engine issues and denial. quote to fix out of pocket is $9,700 which is high and ridiculous considering no one will tell me the actual problem with the car. an entire engine long block block is $2,600 retail. no reply to questions on rebuild. furthermore they want to charge me a daily storage fee because the car has been there 3 days (one day since they got back to me!!!) i feel this might be a ploy to get me to ditch fixing and force me to buy a new jeep. i can't get any answers!!! *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while approaching a traffic light at 25 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle restarted, the automatic transmission was placed into drive, but the vehicle would not move. the vehicle was shut off and turned back on 4 times, before it was able to move. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who could not duplicate the problem after performing a diagnostic test. the dealer informed the contact that all 4 tires were worn down unevenly and there were pieces of metal showing on the insides of the tires. also, it was determined that the brakes and rear rotors were worn, and needed to be replaced, along with all 4 tires. a nhtsa recall letter, #06v288000 on the vehicle, regarding the suspension: front: control arm: lower ball joint was received. the parts needed to repair the vehicle were not available at the local dealership. the manufacturer confirmed the parts were not available. the contact was placed on a waitlist. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who suggested that the recall work should be performed prior to getting all the other components replaced.

Dt: the contact owns a 2003 jeep liberty. the crank sensor failed. the contact has seen other similar complaints on the internet. when the crank sensor fails the vehicle will stall and cut off, causing a loss of steering and brake power. for instance one can be going 60 mph and the vehicle will just stop. there is no warning or lights to warn him. the crank sensor failed and vehicle will stop. check engine light came on afterwards but it automatically reset i self, causing the check engine light to go off in thirty minutes. this was the first time this happened. but while attempting to take the vehicle to a service station it happened several times. the dealership replaced the crank sensor and the cam sensor. . he has found on the internet the codes that gave a false reading for the cam sensor going out instead of the crank sensor. *ak

Transmission and engine lights came on upon towing a coleman yuma pop-up camper. took in to dealer and dealer found that torque converter to be bad along with gear wear. transmission needed to be replaced and gear wear repaired. car has only 8,000 miles on it and it is the first time the car has towed anything. the car should not have had a problem since it is rated with a much higher towing capacity than the coleman yuma is. the dealership is trying to tell me that this is an isolated incident of a bad transmission, but upon further investigation with jeep forums on the net, 85% of liberty owners are experiencing problems with their transmission after 8,000 miles! one owner has had his transmission replaced 3 times! the dealership said this was covered under my warranty this time, but that it would not be covered next time. if the transmission is faulty on all of them, i don't want to get stuck with a lemon on a brand new vehicle!*ak

I have a jeep liberty renegade 4x4 with only 38,000 miles on it. i was driving on the quickway (hwy 17 in middletown, ny) when my car dropped dead in the road with no indications of anything wrong with it. it had gas in it, it's fluids were all changed, etc. i found out later that the spring broke causing the rocker arm to drop out therefore causing major damage to my vehicle. had i been driving in the passing lane or middle lane of the quickway, my son and i would have been dead particularly if a semi was behind us or a major crash if in either lanes. fortunately, i was in the far right lane and could coast over to the right side of the road to relative safety. how can this happen in a car with only 38,000 miles on it? this, in my opinion is a safety defect in the vehicle. chrysler should be forced to recall these cars and fix them. i called the dealer just recently and was told that chrysler would pay for part of the repairs if i had the oil change receipts. my husband does all the maintenance on the vehicle, for the most part, he didn't keep the receipts. also, there are major complaints on the internet about this happening and the dealerships also know about this defect in the 3.7 and 4.7 engines from 2002 to, i believe, 2007. so, i am sure that chrysler knows about this. i am ready to take this information and head to the local newspapers to get them to put out this information and to put pressure on chrysler and the dealerships. my jeep has been sitting in the driveway since dec 8th, 2010 because i do not have the money to fix it.

Ball joint failure three times. emergency brake on five speed never has worked properly. replace engine at 70,000. now the card end joint for the four-wheel drive is not working correctly. my biggest complaint is the ball joint failure for the third time. this issue also causes chain reactions in the tires i have had three sets of tires wear uneven and i wrote the company the first time to complain and got no response. i use my jeep to make my income and do not trust it any more. i do not recommend this vehicle to any one and will not pass it on to any family member. *nm

March 2005 - 2003 jeep liberty 4 cylinder - carriage town chrysler, delaware, ohio - i took my jeep liberty to the dealership for backfiring, check engine light, running rough. they found only spark plug #1 fouled and replaced only the spark plug. 2nd time approx a week later i took my jeep liberty in and it was running rough, no check engine light. dealership refused to look at my vehicle without the check engine light on. 2 days later i returned vehicle with check engine light on, running rough, and backfiring. they replaced all spark plugs and all wires. this happened at approx 28,000 mile on the vehicle. december 2005, engine light on, running rough. replaced spark plug #1 only and wire on spark plug #1. i had been told by service department at this time they had put a special spark plug in my vehicle and that there was a technical service bulletin on my vehicle. jan, 2006 - vehicle is currently in the shop and they are trying to determine what is wrong with the engine, currently they cannot find what is burning up spark plug #1. technical service bulletin: mfg bulletin number: 0803403 mfg bulletin date: 20040302 component: electrical system details: new spark plug for 2.4l engine. *jb

Since purchasing in sept 02 have had vehicle in for service six times for numerous concerns, repeatedly for a clunking/grinding sound from the psgr sd ft, a severe pulling of the vehicle to the right, a vibration when driving hwy speeds, and intermittent engine misses. dealership twice replaced the front end strut mounts which elimated the grind/clunk, but cannot ascertain the problem with the vehicle's instability (pulling) on the road nor with the engine misfires. an adjustment (off spec) to the alignment was performed by dealership which in turn caused the vehicle to pull to the left and also encouraged more steering vibration and worsened mpg - avg 13.21 mpg where initially i got 18 -20 mpg. dealership claims that b/c roads are angled for water runoff, this likewise keeps my vehicle from staying on the road (!?) am currently beginning to experience a clunking noise from rear passenger side wheel area, but have not yet brought it to dealer's attention.*jb

While driving my jeep liberty on the freeway i suddenly heard a loud clanking noise. at about the same time i realized my engine was dead and i coasted off of the freeway. my jeep would not restart and i had to have assistance to push it to a gas station. i called a towing company and had it towed to a jeep dealership where i was treated very rudely and horribly over a 3 to 4 week period where they requested numerous oil change receipts and berated me over the phone each time i called to check the progress of my vehicle. after providing them with my maintenance records chrysler still had the audacity to turn down the claim. i have changed the oil every 3 thousand miles with receipts to prove it. they are accusing me faulty maintenance and refuse to fix the vehicle. my vehicle has 41,000 miles on it and i have a 70,000 mile warranty. according to chrysler they are not responsible for it. how do they get away with this? *jb

Our 2003 jeep liberty failed the state emissions test in april of this year. at this point the engine indicator light was on. we were told one cylinder was misfiring. we took it to bertera in westfield for service. they ran a diagnostic and also said one cylinder was misfiring. they also recommended a tune-up. total repairs were $369. they also recommended a good run of 150 miles to clean out the carbon build up from the miss firing before getting it inspected again. within 3 weeks the engine light was back on. the car was returned for additional service may 21, 2007. final diagnosis took until may 24. problem was cylinder 1 valve burnt and cracked. the final cost to replace the heads on this engine was $3395.95. this does not include the $369 for the tune-up on a bad engine. when we asked for some financial consideration for the tune-up i received a lecture on auto repair is not an exact science. in closing, we keep our vehicles for 10 years, and get 140,000-160,000 miles, therefore we take care of our vehicles with the expectation that mechanical vigilance on our part will guarantee they're longevity. this jeep has 74,700 mostly highway miles and a ruined engine. to us this is a serious failure in quality.
