Applied brakes to stop vehicle, put transmission into park, turned key off, removed key, opened driver door, took foot of brake pedal, exited vehicle, started to walk behind vehicle, noticed vehicle drifting towards me, opened driver door, attempted to jump in to apply brakes, tumbled halfway out of vehicle (strained neck and knee), pulled myself in by the steering wheel, applied brake as vehicle hit parked pickup truck, started vehicle, moved back into previous parking space, applied brakes, put transmission into park, turned off key, took foot of brake pedal, vehicle started to drift (again), applied foot brake and emergency brake, vehicle stopped.

I own a 2003 jeep liberty and have had it for 2 years now and have every problem you can think of. my warranty recently expired 6,000 miles ago. my warranty expired at 75,000 miles and at 78,000 miles my air conditioner broke and had to replace that it cost me $900.00. just yesterday may car would not shift passed second gear, i have an automatic transmission, i noticed it when i was getting on the highway. lately i have been noticing that the transmission seems to be slipping but never could find the problem because my transmission fluid was always fine. so yesterday i went to aamco transmissions and they said it was the tcm so they told me it would cost $440.00 total. so they went to order the part but come to find out no one has it and the place that has all the tcm parts wont ship them till the 24th of september. so here it is september 3rd and i wont have my car fixed for the whole month of september. i don't understand why they wont ship them now. also, they told me that they have been selling out of tcm fast because everyone is always needing them. *tr

Intermittent failure to start leading to complete failure so the 2003 jeep liberty had to be towed to the dealer. after over $500 dollars worth of work to replace the main computer module the jeep started for only 10 days, then the intermittent trouble returned, they replaced the battery, the jeep had no problems now its dead, they have replaced the ignition switch, now the tumbler and new keys, the total is at $300+ and still have a dead jeep. there are 100s of complaints just like this one on the web indicating something is defective!! please help! *tr

After buying the car as jeep liberty renegade 2003 used at about 40,000 miles. the second time i drove the car on the interstate the car started stalling and running very rough. i limped in for about 15 miles to the repair shop and problem was diagnosed as a faulty crank sensor. that was replaced and car ran fine for 4 years. now with 66000 miles the car stall while driving at low speed. restarted and took car in and problem was diagnosed as a faulty crank sensor again, but part had to be ordered and car was running fine. so i decided to drive car while waiting for the part and next day the car would not start. when tow truck arrived car stated fine but had car towed to repair shop. the sensor was replaced but the shop still was having periodic stalling problem. it was finally diagnosed as a faulty cam shaft sensor which was replaced and now the car is running fine. looks like jeep has a problem with the sensors in the jeep renegrade model.

At approximately 25,000 miles my 2003 jeep liberty renegade's transmission went. i took it too a dealer and they rebuilt it instead of replacing it, i have had nothing but problems and took it back continuous times for them too take care of the problem and they said too just keep doing figure 8's with it too get the fluids to run through properly!! so this obviously didn't work, dah!! and they kept putting me off until they finally said, oh it's been too long now and we can't do anything about it! this company is now out of business and the tranny has not gotten better in fact gotten worse!! it was a default transmission obviously and i'm still having serious issues with it. is there anything that can be justified for me???? *tr

Transmission hesitates / lurches randomly. car stalls out, increasingly frequently despite repairs. when engine cuts out, lose all power steering brakes etc - so far only at low speeds but progressively worse - seems very similar to jeep commander recall at higher speeds. rpm needle goes wild after engine cuts out. can restart and limp a few miles, then need tow - 2x towed in 1 week, 3x towed in 2 months, and 4 trips to shop without results. car currently stuck upstate ny where i was trying to vacation -and chrysler/jeep not so cooperative. there's plenty evidence of stalling problems on internet for 4-5 years - see edmunds. theories: deceleration / rpms below 1000 make engine cut out. solenoid is pulling battery amps =12 and causing havoc in ignition system, short-circuiting sensors. thermal computer module damage. computer scans for diagnostic codes definitely not reliable. by relying only on computer module for diagnosis, dealers are only making the problem worse because they are sending cars back out without fixing root problem, causing more damage. i had wheel sensor found corroded 6/3, crank sensor fail 8/6 and cam sensor failed 8/10. sensors don't fail sequentially nor so fast. something is causing sensors to fail. and while sensors not working they are causing damage of their own...computer, ignition coils (all 6 needed repair in 1 case where burned out). who knows if the spark plugs, fuel pumps, injection cleans, and throttle body cleans work or not. (some say tb cleanout is important if stalls are at lower speeds - less air inflow). battery seemed to have issues too soon - may be related. one case where harness wiring rubbed against rear something causing probs. my speedometer broke after 1 sensor repair. separately (unless water and corrosion are the real culprits) brakes and rotors wearing out - replaced 2x in 40k miles. not right. some blog on that, too. *tr

The transmission on our jeep liberty went about a month and half ago. we brought it to the jeep dealership in lincoln, rhode island and were told it was covered under the 7 year/70,000 mile warranty; however, they also told us we would have to wait for a new transmission, but a rebuilt one would be faster and just as good. they had our vehicle for about a week. we tried to be patient even though it was difficult to not have the use of our vehicle for this amount of time. we got the jeep back and now the transmission has gone again. the vehicle was bucking and smelled like it was on fire. it is my opinion that if he had continued to drive it that day, it would have caught on fire. we called the same dealership, but they were not able to take it right away. when we did drop it off, it sat there before they could look at it. they said it was a faulty part in the transmission and again that we would have to wait three weeks for a new transmission, but the part could be ordered and sent by federal express. we cannot be without this vehicle again for three weeks so we chose the rebuilt transmission. i called today, and they haven't gotten the part and haven't called me back with where it is. i called jeep customer service and they said maybe they could offer goodwill assistance with a loaner vehicle, but then said no because it is not covered in our warranty and we are over in mileage, even though our jeep is not 7 years old and does not have 70,000 miles on it. *jb

I have a 2003 jeep liberty, with 36,000 miles. in a span of nine months, my transmission has went out 3 times. i don't haul anything with my jeep, nor do i drive uphill. the jeep service department has chosen to either repair the transmission or use a rebuilt transmission, in spit of my consistent transmission problems. the transmission problems consist of my car not able to go over 30 mph, the rpms shoot up to 6 or 7 and will not come down, and when i try to go faster than 30 the car jerks and smells like something is burning. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while approaching a traffic light at 25 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle restarted, the automatic transmission was placed into drive, but the vehicle would not move. the vehicle was shut off and turned back on 4 times, before it was able to move. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who could not duplicate the problem after performing a diagnostic test. the dealer informed the contact that all 4 tires were worn down unevenly and there were pieces of metal showing on the insides of the tires. also, it was determined that the brakes and rear rotors were worn, and needed to be replaced, along with all 4 tires. a nhtsa recall letter, #06v288000 on the vehicle, regarding the suspension: front: control arm: lower ball joint was received. the parts needed to repair the vehicle were not available at the local dealership. the manufacturer confirmed the parts were not available. the contact was placed on a waitlist. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who suggested that the recall work should be performed prior to getting all the other components replaced.

Bought the 2003 jeep liberty brand new in may, 2003. now a year and seven months later, we still have squealing brakes. the dealer in wichita has replaced the pads 2 or 3 times, and re-surfaced the pads once or twice. they've now decided that they will need to replace the back brakes, including the roters. these parts have been ordered, and we are waiting to have this work done. additionally, the automatic transmission started downshifting hard from 3rd gear to second gear, and down to first gear. they replaced some parts in the transmission, and this problem appears to be fixed. we'll see! they blamed the rusting brakes to humidity...the car now has only 7,200 miles on it, and has been kept inside the garage every night of it's existence. the dealer claims that all the squealing and rusting of the brakes are due to the humidity in the air. we live in the exact middle of the us in kansas. there's not a lot of moisture in the air inside of my attached garage. this brake problem has been ongoing from mid 2003 to the present time in december of 2004. the car only has a little over 7000 miles on it...the dealer said that the problems might go down if we would drive the car more often. we would not recommend a jeep liberty to anyone we like.*ak

For most of the year i have been having trouble with my jeep libert automatic transmission. i have had several problems with it and the dealer still has not resolved the issue. i am being told that they cannot replicate the problem. i describe the following as the problems. at a full stop while holding down the brake the trans mission will shutter and make a banging noise. the transmission shifting at lower gears is rough. it is not in a like new condition. he transmission makes a grinding noise. the vehicle has stalled 3 times do to the transmission problem. thevehicle has lurched forward at a stop sign/light. if not for holding down the brake the vehicle would hit the car in front of me. the transmission has shuttered as it changes gears while driving. mainly at slow speeds. i consider this to be a safety issue with the vehicle. i believe the transmission will fail and i fear it will cause an accident. i have made every attempt to resolve this with the dealer. the transmission has been reconditioned twice. once on april 5,2004 and the other on may 26, 2004. the vehicle was returned to me but the problems reoccurred after a short time. i have called daimler chrysler customer service line and talked to several reps. i have file numbers 12578676 and 12805501. i have also spoken with service manager david cargail and distric manager bruce shirley. nothing has been done to address the problems that i am seeing. i have included the copies of the receipts from the service calls that are related to the transmission problems. i am missing some of the earlier once from this year and will send them if i locate them. i did take the vehicle in today and david cargail test drove it and refused to give me a receipt that i had taken it in to get it looked at. he said that i should have enough documentation that i needed. *ak

2003 jeep liberty ltd. car vibrated at speeds of 55mph and above. fox dealer, auburn ny was great, daimler-chrysler was not. changed all 4 tires and 3 wheels which didn't fix. chrysler closed case within mfg specs.... dealer continued to try to fix at their expense. balanced both driveshafts which were out of balance. still vibrated. moved alignment of spline/differential. didn't fix. finally, daimler-chrysler regional svc mgr offered a swap for a new car, but with me paying mileage over 8k. ny lemon law allows 12k without mileage fee. i initiated lemon law proceedure. the day before arbitration daimler-chrysler legal reps offered same terms i'd have won in arbitration. got rid of liberty at 11900 miles. leased a grand cherokee. the verdict is still under consideration on this car.*ak

Vehicle operates properly through 3rd gear prior to the torque converter clutch engaging. once the torque converter clutch engages, there is a noticeable slipping. this is evident at/and above 50 mph, both on 3rd gear (with od off) and on 4th gear (with od on.) the slipping is not intermittent; it occurs once the vehicle is hot, and when there is a increase in engine load, such as when going up hills (long grade) or when the throttle pressure is increased. it is also most noticeable with the air conditioning on. the slip stops (or at least i do not feel it) once the tcc disengages. *jb

I have two issues. the first being that i received the recall notice for the lower ball joints on my 2003 jeep liberty. i contacted the dealer on nov. 16, 2006 and was asked for my name, number, and address. the man told me that the parts were not in stock and had to be ordered which may take 4-5 weeks. he said they would contact me as soon as the part came in. it has been two months and i have yet to be contacted. recalls are supposed to be done in a timely manner. is this shortage of parts really the problem or it my local dealer. my second issue is that of the floor shifter. the last two times i drove my jeep, it refused to go into park or 1st gear. i tried pressing harder on the button on the underside of the shifter, turning my vehicle off, and giving it force. the first time i ended up driving to my local mechanic who couldn't get it into park at first either, after giving it some force it went in, however he seemed to ignore the fact that it was a problem with the vehicle and told me to make sure i press the button in when trying to put it into park. it happened the following day when i was parking in front of my home. i struggled for 15 minutes, then drove around the block and tried again. i went into park although not smoothly. i will be contacting the dealer tomorrow. i was wondering if anyone else had this issue and would it be covered under any warranty. i have had nothing but negative experiences with dealers, therefore i am dreading having to take my jeep and pay for a defect. please if you have any information on these issues, let me know. thank you for your time. *nm

My six-year-old climbed into the front seat of my 2003 jeep liberty and without the key or stepping on the brake pedal moved the transmission selector from park to some other gear causing it to roll down a driveway where people were. with great fortune, no one was struck or injured but when the car silently rolled away the results could have been catastrophic. this problem was repeatable. without the key turned forward, the transmission can be moved from park without stepping on the brake. with the key forward, it functions properly. jeep reported no recalls and was willing to fix under warranty. *jb

Transmission and engine lights came on upon towing a coleman yuma pop-up camper. took in to dealer and dealer found that torque converter to be bad along with gear wear. transmission needed to be replaced and gear wear repaired. car has only 8,000 miles on it and it is the first time the car has towed anything. the car should not have had a problem since it is rated with a much higher towing capacity than the coleman yuma is. the dealership is trying to tell me that this is an isolated incident of a bad transmission, but upon further investigation with jeep forums on the net, 85% of liberty owners are experiencing problems with their transmission after 8,000 miles! one owner has had his transmission replaced 3 times! the dealership said this was covered under my warranty this time, but that it would not be covered next time. if the transmission is faulty on all of them, i don't want to get stuck with a lemon on a brand new vehicle!*ak

2003 jeep liberty sport (4x4) vibrates excessively between 45-55 mph. dealership replaced rear drive shaft, which did not fix the problem. this is my second jeep liberty with the same problem. the first was a 2002 jeep liberty sport (4x4) with a vibration problem. the dealership replaced the front and rear drives shafts on this vehicle, which did not fix the problem. this vehicle was replaced by chrysler under the wisconsin lemon law. my concern is that this is a design flaw with the jeep liberty that chrysler does not have a fix for.

I've replaced three front drive shafts on my liberty sport within a years time. this jeep isn't abused and is driven in the correct mode for the road conditions. the belief is that the four wheel drive will not disengage properly but no one seems able to find the root cause of these malfunctions. i basically have no shift on the fly, and must be stopped with the vehicle in neutral when engaging or disengaging any four wheel drive mode. sometimes it requires many attempts to fully disengage! if unable to disengage the four wheel drive, even full time mode, the front drive shaft comes unglued where it connects to the transfer case and basically makes the vehicle unsafe and unable to drive until the front drive shaft is removed, which in turn nullifies the four wheel drive feature.

Vehicle: 2003 liberty ltd with 110,000 miles. upon acceleration from a dead stop, or when coasting then accelerating, or shifting under light-to-neutral throttle, there is a noticeable clunk from the rear differential, similar to a worn universal joints. took it to the dealer and found that the spider gears were extremely worn creating abnormal clearances. the dealer stated that this is a common problem with the 2003 model (others?). this is likely due to a poor design or materials. broken or dislodged spider gears have the potential to seize the rotating assembly and send the vehicle into an uncontrolled skid. parts ordered aftermarket to be installed on a date tbd.

Parking brake failure while loading my boat nearly cost my son and myself our lives. backed truck and trailer onto ramp to load boat. noticed the truck slipping on the ramp and suddenly rolled off the ramp hitting my boat and my son had to crawl out the door and swim for safety. he is six years old. vehicle was not running with the transmission in gear and the parking brake engaged. *tr

While driving on any surface, my 4wd manual transmission 2003 jeep liberty pulls strongly to the right. it easily goes off the edge of the road, creating the need for an off road recovery. dealer rotated the tires, but said that the wheels were aligned properly after an accident, an all wheel alignment was completed but it still pulls severely to the right. to add insult to injury, when applying the brake in the rain or on a wet surface, the tires skid and do not properly slow the vehicle down, so trying to manipulate the vehicle to not skid off the right side of the road into the ditch is difficult without being in at least partial 4wd--and that doesn't even help occasionally. *ak

Vehicle experienced acceleration surges. *mr the surging occurred at random times above 25 mph. the acceleration surge also occurred with the cruise control engaged. also the manual transmission would not shift into fourth gear at highway speeds. if a shift was missed, the transmission winded up but no power was transferred to the wheels. with the clutch engaged, the transmission could not be put into gear until the transmission winded down. *tt *jb
POWER TRAIN - TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)

2003 jeep liberty purchased in 2002 has had problem since purchase. the vehicle acts like it is in 4-w drive when it isn't. when attempting to make even gentle turns there are loud cracking sounds and grinding noises. this does not happen all of the time and will go many months without the problem. there have been multiple witnesses to the noise and the hopping of the car when attempting to make the turns. hopping is most evident when attempting to pull into a parking spot even when making a wide turn to avoid a hard/tight turn into the space. the noise and hopping again occur when trying to pull out of the parking space. this happens in 4-w drive as well as when out of 4-w drive. i have reported this to the dealer who does not record my complaint but only states that i can pay for a check of the transmission if i want. they stated that it was common for jeep liberty vehicles to hop and make this noise when in 4-w drive. now that my car is out of warranty it has gotten worse and the problem was never fixed. please investigate this problem before someone is killed. i lost a son last year. i cannot afford to have my transmission, transfer case, etc. repaired because i am struggling financially. just recently the light has stayed on stating i am in part-time 4-w even though i am not. the perform service light has stayed on ever since the very first service on my vehicle in 2002. the dealer does not fix anything. during one service the vehicle bolts were left off and i was told that the car didn't really need those they were just to prevent rattling. they also charged me for a fuel and air filter during a service which was not put on my car. when taking my car to the firestone dealer the very next day to have tires put on they showed me my filters (still on the car) and told me to report it. the dealer is the lithia chrysler jeep dealer located at 3223 mill street in reno, nevada. they should be investigated as to unethical practices.

Ball joint failure three times. emergency brake on five speed never has worked properly. replace engine at 70,000. now the card end joint for the four-wheel drive is not working correctly. my biggest complaint is the ball joint failure for the third time. this issue also causes chain reactions in the tires i have had three sets of tires wear uneven and i wrote the company the first time to complain and got no response. i use my jeep to make my income and do not trust it any more. i do not recommend this vehicle to any one and will not pass it on to any family member. *nm
