SEAT BELTS - FRONT
12/26/20041
Complaint received via e-mail. my wife, son, and i were involved in an accident. we hit an ice patch on i-80 east mile marker 128. we went down a bank and hit a tree head on at aproximatly 50 mph, and seat belts/air bags did not work. i contacted jeep, and was told that an investigator would go and look at the jeep, and they would get back to me. i then contacted the garage where my vehicle was being repaired, and asked the owner if the inspector had been there. i was informed that he was, and that he did not even know where the air bag sensors were located. a few days later, i recieved a letter informing me that the air bag did fail, and that it should not have gone off, my vehicle had $9000 damage at the front end. i am concerned that the vehicle was not safe for myself and family. i did some research on www.nhtsa.dot.gov and found that 9 other 2003, jeep libertys had the same problem. *ak
SEAT BELTS - FRONT - BUCKLE ASSEMBLY

Something was preventing my seat belt from being latched. i looked down to find something that looked like a round metal bead stuck inside. i pried it out with a pen. i was then able to latch the seat belt. then about a week later while driving my seat belt came unlatched. i relatched it only to have it happen over and over again. i went to the dealer to find out i have to buy an entire new seat belt assembly. you cannot buy just the buckle. after researching this website, i see there is an investigation on 2002 jeep liberty seat belt buckles. my car is 2003, however, the dealer informed me that 2002-2005 are the same part. *nm

2 car accidents where another car hydro-planed into front driver side corner of my 2003 jeep liberty. the airbags did not deploy. the vehicle then was forced off the road at a 90 degree angle and we went off the road down a slope about 20-30 feet until we hit an embankment. my seat belt did not hold me and i hit the rear view mirror. i suffered a concussion with 1/2 hour of memory loss and a wound to my head that required staples to close. the car was registered a total loss by the other drivers insurance company... electric insurance company claim # 2003081105302. *la

2003 jeep liberty had defective seat belts, both in the rear, coming apart at the exact same spot. the same day that contact had the jeep in the shop another woman had the exact same problem with her dodge suv. contacted chysler ,who said they would cover the parts only if i paid the dealer over $100.00 in labor costs, which was unfair since it was a clear defect. the belts were basically unused.*ak

Rear passenger side and driver side seat belts won't retract back into it's holster because the belts were unraveling. dealership inspected the seat belts, but could not decide why this was happening because where the belts were unraveling they were not coming in contact with anything. dealership might be able to cover the belt to correct the issue. if this was not possible the entire seat belt assembly has to be replaced.*ak

Both rear seat belts were shredding after very little use and had to be replaced under warranty. it appears the plastic housing of the seat belt retractor is too sharp and the belt rubs against it when used causing damage. *nm
